Pelosi Pushes Democrats to Vote for War Money

Adam Graham-Silverman, Congressional Quarterly: "House leaders appear ready to push ahead with a floor vote on the next war funding bill as early as Tuesday. It's not yet clear that Speaker Nancy Pelosi has persuaded enough fellow Democrats to support it. Democrats are the ones who'll have to supply the votes because Republicans say they are going to stay united and vote against it. 'Nancy's working it,' said Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman John P. Murtha , D-Pa. 'It's going to be a very close vote.'"

Obama Looses the Manhunters: Charisma and the Imperial Presidency

Enough With the Obamathon

Bill Maher, The Los Angeles Times: "In conclusion, Bush was a jerk, but he never cared about being seen having a burger with Dick Cheney. He picked up the phone in the White House and said, 'I'm the president, bring me a burger.' And they'd say, 'Sir, this is NORAD. Would you please stop ordering burgers with the red phone?' I'm glad that Obama is president, but the 'Audacity of Hope' part is over. Right now, I'm hoping for a little more audacity."

Obama Looses the Manhunters: Charisma and the Imperial Presidency

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "Let's face it, even Bo is photogenic, charismatic. He's a camera hound. And as for Barack, Michelle, Sasha, and Malia -- keep in mind that we're now in a first name culture -- they all glow on screen. Before a camera they can do no wrong. And the president himself, well, if you didn't watch his speech in Cairo, you should have. The guy's impressive. Truly. He can speak to multiple audiences -- Arabs, Jews, Muslims, Christians, as well as a staggering range of Americans -- and somehow just about everyone comes away hearing something they like, feeling he's somehow on their side."

Arbeitnehmerdatenschutz: Handeln statt Träumen

15. Juni 2009

Don’t buy what the government is selling

Freedom Politics
by Tom Lucente

06/12/09

For some reason, most Americans are simply confused when it comes to government. I suspect that most people, at some time in their lives, have railed against the government for one reason or another. We have grown accustomed to government scandal, year after year. For example, the list of current or former federal representatives recently or currently under investigation by law enforcement or congressional ethics committees is long indeed...

Why the meltdown should have surprised no one

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Peter Schiff

06/12/09

We had a stock-market bubble because the Federal Reserve was too easy; they were too loose in the 1990s. Interest rates were too low, we created too much money, and that fed the investments in the stock market. And we had a lot of malinvestments. Companies were created that never should have existed. They were created not because they could generate a profit, but because they could go public, because investors wanted these stocks. It didn’t matter that they couldn’t make money...

A disconnect on torture

Campaign For Liberty
by Philip Giraldi

06/13/09

Torture has been universally condemned and banned by both Geneva and United Nations Conventions for good reasons. It is also illegal under US law. It is widely recognized that torture is a line that should not be crossed, that it starts out with sleep deprivation and winds up with torn out fingernails and even death. On a practical level, it only is really good at producing confessions, many of which turn out to be false. It debases and turns sadistic those who carry it out and those who order it. It is a black mark on the government that condones it and it opens the door for other countries to engage in the same or similar practices...

Blackwater Still Working in Iraq for the International Republican Institute, According to New Lawsuit

Jeremy Scahill, Rebel Reports: "It seems as though every week there is a new lawsuit filed against Blackwater for the killing of civilians in Iraq. While the Justice Department has failed to prosecute most of these cases (the September 2007 Nisour Square massacre being an exception), attorney Susan Burke has dedicated a substantial part of her practice to holding the company responsible for its crimes. She works in cooperation with the Center for Constitutional Rights ... beyond the specifics of her lawsuits, Burke is also alleging Blackwater/Xe remains firmly entrenched in Iraq, using affiliate companies like Greystone."

TAMPA - Families demanding to be heard before schools arrange to place cell towers on their campuses now will have a voice.

Hillsborough County commissioners Thursday night changed their land-use codes to force tighter restrictions on schools pursuing cell tower leases. Now a public hearing is required before the towers can go up.
