Opposition erhebt Vorwürfe gegen Steinmeier wegen Irak-Krieges

US Mortgage Rates Surge to Highest Level Since December

Julie Haviv, Reuters: "US mortgage rates surged to their highest in almost six months in the latest week, despite government efforts to keep rates at low levels that will help the hard-hit housing market begin to recover. Interest rates on US 30-year fixed-rate mortgages soared to 5.29 percent for the week ending June 4, up from 4.91 percent in the previous week, according to a survey released on Thursday by home funding company Freddie Mac."

Baucus Tells Single-Payer Advocates No

David Swanson, AfterDowningStreet.org: "Sen. Max Baucus met on Wednesday with advocates for single-payer health care, including Sen. Bernie Sanders, and told them that he might drop criminal charges against 13 people arrested for speaking up in his hearings, but that he would not include any supporters of single-payer health coverage in any future hearings. According to one report, Baucus suggested that he'd been mistaken to exclude single payer, but asserted that the process of creating health care reform legislation was too far along now to correct that omission."

Obama Speaks: Will Palestine or Pakistan Decide?

Steve Weissman, Truthout: "'Violence is a dead end,' he told them. 'It is a sign of neither courage nor power to shoot rockets at sleeping children, or to blow up old women on a bus. That is not how moral authority is claimed; that is how it is surrendered.' One need not be a nonviolent activist to hear the wisdom of Barack Hussein Obama's words, especially as American drones continue to kill innocent Afghans or Pakistanis."

Stimulate economy through deregulation

Competitive Enterprise Institute
by Clyde Wayne Crews and Ryan Young

06/04/09

The economy is contracting at a rate of more than 6 percent this year to date. This is hurting the country and especially Michigan, whose 12.9 percent unemployment rate is the nation’s highest. America’s troubled economy needs a boost, but politicians are taking the wrong approach. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act works — or rather, doesn’t work — by taking money out of the economy, wasting some of it on bureaucracy and then putting it back in. The $787 billion in new debt it is creating will have to be paid back with higher future taxes, which will hurt growth down the road...

Obama, like Bush, just doesn’t get it

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Jacob G. Hornberger

President Obama is in Cairo to deliver a major address to the Muslim world, which no doubt will explain that the U.S. government loves the people of the Middle East and is doing all sorts of good things to them. Alas, President Obama, like his predecessor, just doesn’t get it. The reason that people in the Middle East are angry at the United States is because the U.S. government is over there. If the U.S. government wasn’t involved in the Middle East, that would bring an end to the U.S. foreign-policy woes in that part of the world...

Travel and labor should be peaceful

Center for a Stateless Society
by Alex R. Knight III

06/03/09

We must understand first of all that political borders are nothing but arbitrary lines drawn out on a map, within which political figures — often groups of them — arrogate jurisdiction over the lives and property of the people residing within those artificial boundaries. Currently in America, millions of people who were born outside those borders the government tells us they possess jurisdiction within, come here every year in search of greater economic opportunities and government-granted welfare (public schooling, Medicare, Social Security, food stamps, etc.). Many of these people do not follow the government’s myriad of bureaucratic guidelines for coming to America — they simply cross the arbitrary borders of their own volition unannounced. If they are caught by armed government agents, they are often arrested, handcuffed, jailed, and deported back to the foreign government jurisdiction from whence they came. Many Americans applaud this as a defense of hegemony and a presently floundering economy wherein unemployment is steadily rising...

Obama in Cairo: Words, words, words

The Obama fan club — and by this I mean the media, of course — is already hailing our President’s Cairo speech as the latter-day equivalent of the Sermon on the Mount, and there is no doubt that it was a splendid performance. All the usual superlatives are being unleashed by our love-struck commentariat — soaring, inspiring, intelligent, a triumph — and yet the reality, as the cheers die down, is that his Cairo peroration was just what we have come to expect from this President: pretty words, and even prettier promises. Econocide: Body Count

Nick Turse, TomDispatch.com: "After David B. Kellermann, the chief financial officer of beleaguered mortgage giant Freddie Mac, tied a noose and hanged himself in the basement of his Vienna, Virginia, home, The New York Times made it a front-page story. The stresses of the job in economic tough times, its reporters implied, had driven him to this extreme act. 'Binghamton Shooter' Jiverly Wong also garnered front-page headlines nationwide and set off a cable news frenzy when, 'bitter over job loss,' he massacred 13 people at an immigration center in upstate New York. Similarly, coverage was brisk after Pittsburgh resident Richard Poplawski, 'upset about recently losing a job,' shot four local police officers, killing three of them. But where was the front-page treatment when, in January, Betty Lipply, a 72-year-old resident of East Palestine, Ohio, 'who feared she'd lose her home to foreclosure, hanged herself to death' shortly after 'receiving her second summons and foreclosure complaint from her mortgage lender'?"

A Day in the Life

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "The Obama administration opened the White House doors to NBC correspondent Brian Williams and a large herd of television cameras last week, the fruits of which became a two-day television special titled 'Inside the Obama White House,' which NBC aired Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Most of it is fluff - among other things, we learn that Rahm Emanuel walks fast, M&M's taste good, Bo the dog is growing fast and Five Guys makes a mean cheeseburger - but the lasting impression left by the show is how busy a place this White House is. During a Blue Room interview between Williams and President Obama, the question of whether the Obama administration is taking on too many massive tasks came up. Mr. Obama laughed, shook his head and made a good point: 'What, exactly, would you have me give up?'"

Arbeitsmarkt: Elf Millionen Jobs droht Auslagerung

Doch was kommt danach?

Community's fears as phone giant appeals 14-metre mast plan refusal

Profile by Siew Peng Lee

THE Scottish Reporter has visited Rosyth as part of a probe into Vodafone’s appeal to erect a phone mast on Queensferry Road.

Vodafone applied for planning permission last October to put up a 14.2m-high tower, with three antennae, a transmission dish and associated ground base equipment cabinets – but was turned down by Fife Council “in the interests of visual and residential amenity”.

The council said the proposed installation would be “out of character with the immediate urban form and detailing of the streetscape and would detract from the visual integrity of the Rosyth Methodist Church”.

However, the mobile phone giant appealed and Rosyth Community Council chair Mike Shirkie said residents would be “very disappointed” if it went through.

He said, “People don’t want it. Local residents will be very disappointed if they win the appeal. That’s why we raised the objection, because there was a feeling locally that they didn’t want the mast.

Potential catastrophe on horizon for US Congress

Intellectual Conservative
by Anthony Tsontakis

06/03/09

Today, in the United States, a massive expansion of federal power is taking place; the economic crisis has been used as a pretext to spectacularly amplify the scope of the administrative state. For example, the $789 Stimulus Package — which exceeds the entire cost of the Iraq War that began in 2003 — was rushed through Congress so fast that most legislators did not even have the chance to read it. Yet it passed. Since our representatives apparently no longer consider understanding a bill necessary to cast votes in its favor, it is safe to infer that the activities of federal administration have expanded to a point that legislative power can no longer meaningfully restrain them...

As the dollar falls off the cliff

CounterPunch
by Paul Craig Roberts

06/03/09

Economic news remains focused on banks and housing, while the threat mounts to the US dollar from massive federal budget deficits in fiscal years 2009 and 2010. Earlier this year the dollar’s exchange value rose against currencies, such as the euro. UK pound, and Swiss franc, against which the dollar had been steadily falling. The dollar’s rise made US policymakers complacent, even though the rise was due to flight from over-leveraged financial instruments and falling stock markets into ’safe’ Treasuries. Since April, however, the dollar has steadily declined as investors and foreign central banks realize that the massive federal budget deficits are likely to be monetized. What happens to the dollar will be the key driver of what lies ahead. The likely scenario could be nasty...

The shadow war in Balochistan

Asia Times
by Pepe Escobar

06/03/09

With or without using Jundallah for its own Iran-destabilizing agenda, Washington’s ‘other’ war is about to hit Balochistan in Pakistan full speed ahead. By mid-summer, the US’s Afghan surge in troops will be in position. A new American mega-base in Helmand province’s ‘desert of death’ will be operational. Assassination teams, drone attacks and Hellfire missiles will boil this tense tri-border area. Shadowplay rules...

Suckered by the Obama administration

Foreign Policy in Focus
by Ira Chernus

05/29/09

I hate to admit it, but I’ve been suckered by the Obama administration. A few weeks ago the secretary of State announced, in effect, that the ‘war on terror’ was over. From now on, the mass media informed us, the United States would be fighting only ‘overseas contingency operations.’ There was so much buzz about the end of the war that I was moved to write a column, do radio interviews, the whole bit. Very exciting! Except that now we know it wasn’t exactly true. In his recent speech at the National Archives, the president himself said clearly that we’re still at war. We can still suspend the Constitution and imprison people indefinitely (the new euphemism is ‘prolonged detention’) because they are ‘prisoners of war’...

Bernanke sounds alarm on budget deficit

Houston Chronicle

06/03/09

The nation needs to begin planning now to reduce the budget deficit, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Wednesday, arguing that even as the government acts to bolster the economy in the short run it must ensure that spending and revenue will come into line in the longer term. ‘Congress and the administration face formidable near-term challenges that must be addressed,’ Bernanke told the House Budget Committee, according to prepared testimony. But he warned that the economy will suffer ‘unless we demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal sustainability in the longer term’...

With IMF Money, the War Supplemental Could Fail in the House

Robert Naiman, Truthout: "Last month, 60 members of the House of Representatives, including 51 Democrats, voted against the war supplemental for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. But this week, when the House is expected to consider the agreement of a House-Senate conference on the war funding, the supplemental could well be defeated on the floor of the House - if most of the 51 antiwar Democrats stick to their no vote - which they might, if they hear from their constituents."
