Banksters Win One, Lose One in Congress

Bernie Horn, The Campaign for America's Future: "Yesterday, the US House of Representatives handed bankers in the credit card industry a defeat. But almost simultaneously, mortgage bankers won big in the Senate. Senator Richard Durbin lamented that the banks 'are still the most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. And they frankly own the place.'"

Change over mobile phone masts

Telford & Wrekin Council is due to adopt new guidelines when deciding the controversial issue of mobile phone masts.

It follows huge concern among residents when telecommunications giants announce plans to install masts close to housing estates and playing fields.

Now the council cabinet, which meets on May 11, is set to spell out exactly which matters councillors should consider when applications are made for phone masts and radio equipment.

Business News of Saturday, 2 May 2009

Accra, May 02, GNA - Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Communications, has urged telecom operators to be considerate of peoples' reservations about telecom towers mounted close to their dwelling place and institute measures to allay the anxieties of the public.

Alternative site for Marlow mast found

10:30am Saturday 2nd May 2009

By James Nadal

AN ALTERNATIVE site for the controversial Foxes Piece phone mast has been found, communications giant Orange has announced.

In a joint statement with Wycombe District Council the mobile phone operator revealed “a potentially suitable location” has been earmarked - in Station Approach - after a series of tests were carried out earlier this year.

It will now contact residents in the street prior to the plan being submitted to WDC.

Campaigners have issued a cautious welcome to the news, saying they will reserve their celebrations until it is certain the 12m tall antenna in Little Marlow Road, Marlow will not be built.

Ohne Mindestlohn ist weiteres Lohndumping zu erwarten

http://www.heise.de/tp/r4/artikel/30/30207/1.html

--------

19. August 2009

Administering Food and Drugs

by Nancy Levant

We need to step back and look at very fundamental clues which led to the freakish ignorance of the American people. Let us begin with health. We the American people are the most drugged people on the planet. Senior citizens, bar none, are walking chemical experimentation organisms. With or without all the drugs, most seniors still die between the ages of 70 and 80, but the drugs that infect their systems are bizarre chemical cocktails and many are drugged to lethargy and death under the umbrella of humaneness or clinical trials.......

Human Rights in the Dust

Karen Greenberg, TomDispatch.com: "These days, it's virtually impossible to escape the world of torture the Bush administration constructed. Whether we like it or not, almost every day we learn ever more about the full range of its shameful policies, about who the culprits were, and just which crimes they might be prosecuted for. But in the morass of memos, testimony, op-eds, punditry, whistle-blowing, documents, and who knows what else, with all the blaming, evasion, and denial going on, somehow we've overlooked the most significant victim of all. One casualty of the Bush torture policies -- certainly, at least equal in damage to those who were tortured and the country whose laws were twisted and perverted in the process -- has been human rights itself. And no one even seems to notice."

Poole residents gear up for fight over phone mast

7:10pm Friday 1st May 2009

ANGRY neighbours have vowed to fight communication giant Vodafone in what is shaping up to be the battle of the Balston Road phone mast.

Shocked Poole mum Melanie Brown is leading the charge after learning the mast could be sited just five metres from her three-year-old daughter’s bedroom.

“I am very concerned that in ten years time we will begin to see the effects of these masts on our children,” she said.

Plan for a mobile mast near school

Angry residents and parents opposed the move due to fears over the possible negative side effects caused to youngsters' health by radiation emitted from the mast.

Mobile giant goes on with mast bid

Friday, May 01, 2009, 09:20

CAMPAIGNERS have launched a second battle to stop a phone mast being erected close to a nursery.

Telefonica O2's proposal to build a 49ft mast in Weston Coyney has already been rejected by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, but the firm has appealed the decision and still wants to build the mock telegraph pole, with three integrated antennas and equipment cabinet, at the corner of Park Hall Road and Weston Road.

The matter is currently awaiting a ruling from a planning inspector, who is unlikely to make his site visit before May 6.

Last time, hundreds of people objected to the proposed site directly opposite St Andrew's Church, which houses St Andrews and St Peters Pre-school.

And ward councillor Michael Coleman says he has already received many complaints about the appeal.

A Racist Recession?

Acton Institute
by Anthony B. Bradley

04/29/09

Looking at the latest unemployment numbers, conspiracy theorists might postulate that our current economic crisis has a racial dimension, tilting against blacks and especially black males. The latest seasonally adjusted U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics unemployment numbers reveal that blacks have an unemployment rate of 13.3 percent compared to 7.9 percent for whites. For black men over nineteen years of age, the data are even worse: 15.4 percent compared to 8 percent for white males. These gaps represent a terrible cost in lost potential, and require action on multiple fronts. Critical to progress on this problem are a reform of welfare policies in tandem with a renewal of an ethic of educational achievement...

Stop your gadget greed from fueling tragedy in Congo

Christian Science Monitor
by Sheryl Crow & John Prendergast

04/30/09

Your cellphone purchases might be fueling the world’s worst sexual violence. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a place most of us will never go, and the war there is affecting people most of us will never meet. But the link between our demand for electronic products and mass human suffering is incredibly direct. It is stunning that we as consumers have been completely unaware of the complex chain of events tying widespread sexual violence in Congo to the minerals that help power our cellphones, laptops, mp3 players, video games, and digital cameras. Thankfully, there is an alternative: Companies and consumers alike must use our buying power to bring this deadly war fueled by ‘conflict minerals’ to an end...

America’s necessary dark night of the soul

Salon
by Gary Kamiya

05/01/09

Those opposed to reopening the book on the Bush years argue that doing so would tear the country apart. They’re right — but they forget that the country is already torn apart. The gulf between Democrats and Republicans has never been wider. The Republican Party, the home of those who still defend the Bush years, has become a reactionary and increasingly marginal movement that is in fealty to crude demagogues like Rush Limbaugh and whose hysterical denunciations of Obama sound more and more unhinged. What this means is that those Americans who would be truly outraged by an investigation are already outraged. It could not make them any angrier or more bitter than they already are. And even if it did, how much difference would that make? The GOP base already regards Democrats as terrorist-coddling communists. Are they going to all join militias?

Do conservatives understand torture?

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

04/30/09

The current conservative line on the forms of torture used by the Bush administration — from waterboarding to stress positions that produce ‘muscle fatigue’ that manages not to rise to the level of ’severe pain’ — leads to an obvious question. Why don’t we do more of it? According to the right, this kind of physical and psychological torment doesn’t meet the standard for illegal torture. And according to the right, it’s also highly effective at producing information. And a legal, highly effective method of acquiring information from prisoners or captives sounds like a useful thing indeed. It seems to me that people who genuinely believe this stuff — those who, like moral cretin and Weekly Standard blogger Michael Goldfarb want to call torturers ‘American heroes’ and make light of waterboarding by calling it ‘dunking’ — ought to believe in making its use widespread. And yet somehow, I don’t hear the calls...

Torture and treason

Common Dreams

04/30/09

The question of the moment is now, no longer: Is torture un-American? It is: Are we, as a nation, bigger than our transgressions? Can we establish a commission or an investigation with a moral force greater than the trust that has been debased? Can we face up to what has been done in our name, establish accountability and find a way to atone and change?

Monopoly money

The Partial Observer
by James Leroy Wilson

04/30/09

The bank was once considered a warehouse where people could keep their gold or other precious metal for a fee. The paper receipts they were given by the bank began to circulate in the economy as a paper substitute for the gold money itself. This tempted the bank to issue more receipts as loans than it actually had in its vaults. Sometimes, the people lost trust in the bank and a ‘bank run’ would ensue where everyone would try to get their gold back, and only a few could. The Federal Reserve System was set up to protect these fraudulent banks from bank runs. Even today, when the Federal Reserve paper dollar is money, banks have just one-tenth of their total deposits in paper and coin for people to withdraw. Money is ‘created’ by the Federal Reserve Board more by computer entries than by the printing press, and each additional dollar it creates makes each existing dollar slightly less valuable...

Bush-era memos claim to vindicate Abu Ghraib soldiers?

CNN

04/30/09

Interrogation tactics such as waterboarding, sleep deprivation and forced nudity did not violate laws against torture when there was no intent to cause severe pain, according to the Bush-era memos on the tactics released by the Obama administration April 16th. A Senate report declassified last week says senior Bush administration officials authorized the aggressive interrogation techniques on suspected terrorists, despite concerns from military psychologists and attorneys...

REPORTER KNOCKS BACK 'PHONE MAST PLAN

Published Date: 30 April 2009

OPPONENTS of a mobile 'phone mast on Carlogie Road, Carnoustie, are rejoicing that Vodafone's appeal against refusal has been rejected.

Angus Council threw out the initial application on September 2.

The telecommunications giant was adamant that its application site, near the junction with Newton Road, was the correct one.

However, whilst the Scottish Ministers' Reporter, Janet McNair, accepted that Vodafone wished to improve its service, she said that it is impossible to conclude with certainty that a more visually satisfactory alternative site is not available.

Miss McNair continued: "Street lighting columns, overhead power lines, signs, and a bus shelter are already part of the streetscape of this part of Carlogie Road, which is the main approach into Carnoustie from the A92.

Occupying Hearts and Minds

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "One of the definitions of the word 'occupation' is: the action, state, or period of occupying or being occupied by military force. Throughout history, areas or countries occupied by military force have always resisted, and this resistance has caused the occupier to devise more suitable methods of subduing the population of the area being occupied."

How "The NAFTA Flu" Exploded

Al Giordano, Narco News: "US and Mexico authorities claim that neither knew about the 'swine flu' outbreak until April 24. But after hundreds of residents of a town in Veracruz, Mexico, came down with its symptoms, the story had already hit the Mexican national press by April 5."

Don't Let Insurance Company Greed Block Swine Flu Response

John Nichols, The Nation: "Anyone who has had much experience with America's health care system knows that nurses are the essential players in making things work. So as the swine flu outbreak evolves into a genuine public health emergency - with cases being discovered in more states and the announcement by President Obama of the first death in the US - it is time to consult the nation's nurses."

Swine flu? A panic stoked in order to posture and spend

Guardian [UK]
by Simon Jenkins

04/30/08

We have gone demented. Two Britons are or were (not very) ill from flu. ‘This could really explode,’ intones a reporter for BBC News. ‘London warned: it’s here,’ cries the Evening Standard. Fear is said to be spreading ‘like a Mexican wave.’ It ‘could affect’ three-quarters of a million Britons. It ‘could cost’ three trillion dollars. The ‘danger,’ according to the radio, is that workers who are not ill will be ‘worried’ (perhaps by the reporter) and fail to turn up at power stations and hospitals. Appropriately panicked, on Monday ministers plunged into their Cobra bunker beneath Whitehall to prepare for the worst. Had Tony Blair been about they would have worn germ warfare suits. British government is barking mad...
