Wall Street Digs In

Michael Hirsh, Newsweek: "Not long ago, a group of skeptical Democratic senators met at the White House with President Obama, his chief economic adviser, Larry Summers, and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. The six senators - most of them centrists, joined by one left-leaning independent, Vermont's Bernie Sanders - said that while they supported Obama, they were worried. The financial reform policies the president was pursuing were not going far enough, they told him, and the people Obama was choosing as his regulators were not going to change things fundamentally enough."

What Change? US Refuses to Participate in World Conference Against Discrimination

David Gespass, Truthout: "For those of us who were in Durban, South Africa, in 2001 for the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, the decision of the United States to leave before the conclusion was disheartening, but not surprising... There were two issues in particular the US did not want on the agenda. One was that of reparations for the slave trade and the other was the plight of the Palestinian people. While the US withdrawal was predicated on the latter, it remains an open question how much of a role each played in its decision."

Police Killing Shakes Louisiana Town

Michael Kunzelman and Mary Foster, The Associated Press: "For 73 years before his killing by a white police officer, Bernard Monroe led a life in this northern Louisiana town as peaceful as they come - five kids with his wife of five decades, all raised in the same house, supported by the same job. The black man's shooting death is attracting far more attention than he ever did, raising racial tensions between the black community and Homer's police department."

Anger as mobile mast plan threatens Hadrian's Wall

Apr 11 2009 by Dave Black, The Journal

A NEW bid to erect a mobile phone mast half a mile from one of the region’s historic treasures is being recommended for approval, despite strong opposition by local councillors.

Telecommunications giant Telefonica O2 UK wants to site the 27.5m-high lattice tower in Heddon-on-the-Wall, Northumberland – 800 metres north of the Roman Wall and within the official setting of the World Heritage Site.

Parish councillors at Heddon say it is “inconceivable” that a mobile phone mast could be sited within the World Heritage Site under any circumstances, and have branded the proposal “completely unacceptable”.

America's 20 Percent Unemployment Rate

Carlton Meyer, Sanders Research Associates: "Measuring unemployment is an art that can result in widely varied rates. Not surprisingly, the US government uses a method that excludes millions of Americans seeking employment. This lower rate is used to prove that America's economic system is superior to those in Europe. Their higher unemployment rates are blamed on unions and socialism, which guarantee workers health care and paid vacations. The implication is that while many American workers lack such benefits, at least they have jobs. This argument is faulty since unemployment is measured differently."

Rollout for TARP Not Exactly Smooth

Christina Rexrode, The Charlotte Observer: "TARP has struggled to clarify its purpose and organize its logistics, according to the three government groups in charge of overseeing the program. They say the Treasury Department, which administers TARP, is tight-lipped on some important matters, such as how officials decide which banks qualify for it. They complain that TARP doesn't have the staffing to make sure banks are complying with the rules attached to the money. There's even disagreement about how much money is actually left."

Rise of the TARP state

National Review
by Rich Lowry

04/10/09

How many legislators thought that in supporting TARP they were giving the federal government the power to bail out the auto industry, let alone fire a CEO and effectively run companies? When word came down in October that GMAC, the financial arm of General Motors, was considering becoming a bank holding company to get TARP funds, it seemed a violation of the spirit of the law. But GMAC needn’t have bothered. Through TARP, government funds went directly to GM and Chrysler, even after Congress declined to authorize them. As he was using the leverage created by TARP to fire GM’s CEO, Pres. Barack Obama guaranteed warranties for GM and Chrysler cars. He set up special warranty accounts — funded, naturally, with TARP dollars. TARP is an endlessly flexible slush fund that has given the federal government warrant to intervene in the private sector however it pleases. A lawlessness has inhered in TARP since Bush Treasury secretary Henry Paulson sold it to Congress under essentially false pretenses. The Obama administration continues in the same tradition...

Second phone mast blow for community

Saturday, April 11, 2009, 08:20

FAMILIES are fuming after a second mobile phone firm announced plans for a mast near to a school and a play area.

Orange wants to build a 12-metre high mast on Jubilee Road, May Bank, which cuts through Wolstanton Marsh and is close to May Bank Infants' School.

The company is seeking residents' feedback before submitting a planning application to Newcastle Borough Council.

The news comes after The Sentinel reported earlier this month that Vodafone wanted to build another 10-metre high mast on the same stretch of road.

Now residents are horrified at the prospect of both phone companies winning planning permission.

Victoria Taylor, aged 24, of Oxford Road, May Bank, said: "As a mother of two children and another on the way, I'm very worried about the effects on their health.

Pakistan says, US Attacks Killed 687 innocent civilians

Of the 60 cross-border predator strikes carried out by the Afghanistan-based American drones in Pakistan between January 14, 2006 and April 8, 2009, only 10 were able to hit their actual targets, killing 14 wanted al-Qaeda leaders, besides perishing 687 innocent Pakistani civilians. The success percentage of the US predator strikes thus comes to not more than six per cent.
