Bush's Institute of Failure

Richard Cohen, The Washington Post: "Former president George W. Bush and some of his White House aides are gathering in Dallas this week to plan the future George W. Bush Policy Institute. There, I guess, they will ponder grand themes and marble foyers, but I propose they begin by simply renaming the place. I suggest naming it the 'George W. Bush Institute of Management Failure' and dedicating it to studying how this presidency went so wrong -- a task as big as Texas itself. Bush's tenure was truly remarkable. He left office with the lowest presidential poll ratings in 60 years, two wars begun and not ended, and the deepest recession since the Great Depression. If it's true that we learn from our mistakes, Bush's eight years represent a bonanza of lessons."

Rethinking Afghanistan

Anne Miller, Truthout: "The lack of serious scrutiny of the president's Afghanistan policy is nothing short of stupefying, especially given our recent misadventures in Iraq. Where is the critical debate? The mantra of many Democrats is that military force alone won't solve the problem in Afghanistan. The 'problem' seems to be how to keep the corrupt US-backed central government in Kabul from falling, and what to do about the thousands of al-Qaeda members in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Meanwhile, many conservative members of Congress lament that the president isn't sending additional brigades. Congress and the public should be asking what President Obama realistically thinks the US military can accomplish with an additional 21,000 US forces in Afghanistan. What can they do that soldiers from forty-one countries in seven and a half years have been unable to accomplish? And what the British and the Soviets were unable to accomplish before that?"

Call for Direct Witness Evidence of GM Hazards & Failures

ISIS Call for Evidence 14/04/09

Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

In February, 26 scientists wrote to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States, expressing concern that they are being blocked from conducting independent research into GM crops by biotech corporations, and hence the information submitted to the EPA and other regulators are biased. Earlier in the same month, the group, Sense About Science (SAS) based in the UK, which describes itself as “a charitable trust to promote good science and evidence for the public” published a pamphlet Making Sense of GM, to help overcome “misconceptions” that have prevent the public from accepting GM crops and all the benefits they will bring. It was exposed in the public media as having been sponsored and co-written by Monsanto’s former director of scientific affairs (see Corporate Monopoly of Science, http://www.i-sis.org.uk/corporateMonopolyOfScience.php SiS 42). Corporations are aiming for an absolute stranglehold on scientific research and the flow of scientific information.

We have exposed the lies and half-truths concerning the performance of GM crops in the past partly by asking protesting citizens to photograph field trials or problems caused by GM crops near them, which we make available to the public and policy-makers (see Citizen's Vigil Exposes Bad Science in GM Crop Trial, SiS 13/14; http://www.i-sis.org.uk/MunlochyVigil.php Bogus Comparison in GM Maize Trial, SiS 22; http://www.i-sis.org.uk/BogusComparison.php Deadly gift from Monsanto to India, SiS 38). http://www.i-sis.org.uk/Deadly_Gift_from_Monsanto.php This kind of direct witness evidence is very important; but is inadequately and only sporadically documented. This makes it easy for our regulators to ignore it, using the lame excuse that they are relying only on evidence “peer-reviewed and published” in scientific journals.

Fortunately, the law courts do not take that view. Such witness evidence, properly documented, is powerful, and often sufficient for incrimination. We should take inspiration from Georgina Downs’ High Court victory on 14 November 2008 ( http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article51
61219.ece ). The judgement concluded that the British government has been acting unlawfully in its crop spraying policy and failing to protect the health of the public living near agricultural land. The evidence included a two part video, together with pesticide-soaked mannequins having a ‘picnic’ during a spray.

ISIS has already accumulated a large dossier of evidence (GM Science Exposed., http://www.i-sis.org.uk/MunlochyVigil.php), and your help in assembling witness evidence may be just what’s needed to make the case for a global ban on environmental releases of GMOs that we have advocated since 2003 (see The Case for A GM-Free Sustainable World, Independent Science Panel Report, http://www.i-sis.org.uk/onlinestore/books.php)

Please submit to us photographic and video evidence of hazards and failures

via e-mail: evidence@i-sis.org.uk, or send CD/DVD in envelope marked “EVIDENCE”, to ISIS, Omnibus Business Centre, 39-41 North Road, London N7 9DP, UK. This could consist of failures of GM crops (including monstrous plants such as those observed in Mexico), death and sicknesses of animals or human beings exposed to GM crops that you have personally experienced, or witnessed in your community or neighbourhood. Evidence from experiments that you have conducted will also be appropriate.

Be sure to include detailed documentation of the subject filmed or photographed, giving date and location, including your name, e-mail, address and telephone number, as we may contact you for an interview. These details will not be disclosed without your permission.

Neoconned again

The American Conservative
by Michael Brendan Dougherty

After successive elections unseated the Republican majority and sent John McCain to defeat, neoconservatism seemed like a spent force. Francis Fukuyama wrote wistfully about life ‘After Neoconservatism’ in 2006. Ian Buruma described the McCain campaign as the neocons’ ‘last stand’ and harrumphed that they ‘will not be missed.’ One would expect neoconservatives to be friendless and circumspect, grumbling about Obama’s inevitable failure as they slump away from Washington. Instead, they are jubilant, palling around with liberals again, enjoying renewed respect. Obama is their hero... (for publication 04/20/09)

China’s threat to the US is exaggerated

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

04/13/09

The Pentagon’s annual publication, ‘Military Power of the People’s Republic of China 2009,’ accused China of stocking its military with weapons that can be used to intimidate or attack Taiwan and mitigate U.S. air and naval superiority near its territory. Even if the Department of Defense’s report has not exaggerated the threat from China — unlikely since the department has an inherent conflict of interest in evaluating threats and building weapons to counter those threats — the report is good news. You would never know it by the statement of Ike Skelton, Democratic Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, who warned that ‘China’s military budget continues a trend of double-digit increases and questions remain about China’s strategic intentions.’ Unfortunately, no questions exist about U.S. strategic intentions, even under a new more liberal president...

Bankruptcies surge despite law meant to curb them

Bismarck Tribune

04/13/09

The number of U.S. businesses and individuals declaring bankruptcy is rising with a vengeance amid the recession, despite a three-year-old federal law that made it much tougher for Americans to escape their debts, an Associated Press analysis found. ‘There’s no end in sight,’ said bankruptcy lawyer Bryan Elliott of Hickory, N.C., who is working seven days a week and scheduling prospective clients a month in advance...

Truth and reconciliation

The Obama administration can no longer dodge the bullet of the war crimes committed while George W. Bush was in office. It is clear that the president is reluctant to act, fearing that this can of worms, if opened, could afflict Republicans and Democrats alike. He prefers, as he puts it, ‘looking forward’ instead of ‘looking back.’ Political realities explain his posturing. The deep, dark secret of the Democrats is that the party leadership wanted war with Iraq just as much as most Republicans, and it has been prominent Democrats who have been pushing hardest for military action against Iran. Many Democrats have spoken out in favor of ‘extraordinary rendition’ and the so-called ‘enhanced interrogation’ methods that are nothing more than euphemisms for torture. But Barack Obama’s reluctance notwithstanding, it is time to know the truth about what the government has been doing on behalf of the American people...

If the Bank Bailout Fails, Will Anyone Get the Boot?

The Big Business/Big Government Axis Of Evil

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

Corporatism is the marriage of Big Business with Big Government. Corporatism uses the force and weight of government to create giant monopolies, which strangle competition and freedom. Rules and regulations are enacted that make it impossible for "little" guys to compete. The trade laws of nations are pitted against each other, forcing free nations to sacrifice their own peace and security to accommodate the economies of totalitarian regimes. And, of course, Big Business is the recipient of gargantuan profits in the process.......

The Red Cross Torture Report: What it Means

By Mark Danner

For many in the United States, torture still stands as a marker of political commitment-of a willingness to "do anything to protect the American people," a manly readiness to know when to abstain from "coddling terrorists" and do what needs to be done. Torture's powerful symbolic role, like many ugly, shameful facts, is left unacknowledged and undiscussed. But that doesn't make it any less real. On the contrary.

America's Imperial Wars: We Need to See the Horrors

By Dave Lindorff

We may read the cold fact that the US military, after initial denials, admits that its forces killed not four enemy combatants in an assault on a house in Afghanistan, but rather five civilians-including a man, a female teacher, a 10-year-old girl, a 15-year-old boy and a tiny baby. Australian Government Urged to Conduct Iraq War Probe

Stephen de Tarczynski, Inter Press Service: "The UK government's recent announcement that it will conduct an inquiry into Britain's involvement in Iraq has led to calls here for Australia to review its own participation in the controversial war. Britain's foreign secretary David Miliband said in late March that the government would undertake a 'comprehensive' inquiry into Britain's decision to join the 2003 United States-led invasion of the Middle Eastern nation. This Isn't Working

Marc Ash, Truthout: "Still well short of the Obama administration's 100th day in office, substantive judgment would normally be premature at best, but these are extraordinary times. The raging inferno of corruption that began in the Bush years burns out of control now, and time is of the essence. Some would argue the corruption was always there, is always there, a flaw in the human spirit that is never gone, but for a time controlled. In either case, the fire is now raging and threatens to consume everything. While the new, and very popular, President Barack Obama appears to mean well, Hillary Clinton's admonishment that he was unprepared for what lays ahead now seems more real than at first imagined."

Mobile phone mast plans for Brighton church

3:00pm Monday 13th April 2009

By Emily-Ann Elliott

Church bosses are considering allowing a mobile phone company to install a mast on the building’s spire.

Members of the congregation at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Dyke Road, Brighton, received a letter informing them that the church’s management team has been approached by New Edge Telecommunications with the proposal.

However church workers insist the plans are at their very early stages and a formal consultation process has not yet begun.

Obama’s weapons of mass distraction

Root for America
by Wayne Allyn Root

04/08/09

Distraction is President Obama’s greatest weapon against the truth. You see Obama can’t afford to allow the average American to see what’s really happening. Obama’s economic plans are so dangerous and deadly to our future that socialist France is warning us that our spending is suicidal; The President of the European Union is scolding us; Russia’s Vladimir Putin recently criticized America for abandoning the free markets; and China is suggesting a new world reserve currency. Get the hint? When Russia is lecturing us that we’ve abandoned capitalism, America is surely in deep trouble...

International currency and the power to inflate

FreedomWorks
by Joseph Onorati

04/11/09

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) holds an imaginary currency called Special Drawing Rights (SDR) that acts as a currency reserve for other countries. A reserve currency is held by foreign countries to purchase or sell their national currency in order to manipulate its value. Recently, the dollar and Euro fill the role of reserve currency for 90 percent of global reserves. The SDRs currently represent the value of the Euro, pound, dollar, and yen. The basket of currencies is intended, in the rhetoric anyway, to stabilize the value of the reserve currency rather than putting control in the hands of a single government or central bank. Russia and China are now pursuing the expansion of the program to include their currency and to increase the amount of SDRs available...

In 1969 economist Harold Demsetz identified an important flaw in much public policy analysis, the ‘Nirvana Fallacy.’ We would do well to keep it in mind as we think about solutions to the current economic problems. Demsetz described the fallacy thus: ‘The view that now pervades much public policy economics implicitly presents the relevant choice as between an ideal norm and an existing ‘imperfect’ institutional arrangement. This nirvana approach differs considerably from a comparative institution approach in which the relevant choice is between alternative real institutional arrangements’...

Government’s mistakes have deepened this recession

Competitive Enterprise Institute
by Fred L. Smith, Jr.

04/09/09

Steven Gjerstad and Vernon Smith suggest one unexplored aspect of our financial crisis: the role of egalitarian policies. To see this, note their distinction between the impacts of the $10 trillion loss in the 2000 stock market collapse and the $3 trillion loss of the recent housing collapse. A driving force behind all this has been radical egalitarianism — the idea that something that can be afforded by some should be made available to everyone. Our universal housing-ownership passion transformed the housing market...

[I]n the case of torture, I can see two reasons why ‘good faith’ should not apply, no matter how many memos John Yoo issued: 1) We’re talking about extreme acts. It’s hard to see a gray area here. If you registered a business vehicle under category XYZ instead of category 123, because it was mostly used for business trips rather than hauling merchandise, even though business vehicles capable of hauling merchandise need to be placed in category 123 and inspected for blah blah blah when operated across state lines, I can see the gray area. But if you want to start talking about crushing a kid’s testicles (yes, Yoo actually talked about this), um, well, I’m sorry, but that should look like a red flag, not a gray area. 2) Their actions indicate that they knew they were committing crimes. They tried to keep it secret, they tried to deny it, and when possible they tried to blame ‘a few bad apples.’ That doesn’t sound like something you do when you’re sure that you’re on the side of the angels...

Afghanistan: Baby shot dead in US troop raid

Telegraph [UK]

04/10/09

A seven-day-old baby has been killed during a bungled US army raid to seize an al Qaeda-linked terrorist in Afghanistan. The boy died alongside four other innocent civilians, including two children, who were shot dead by US forces during the night-time raid. The shootings came amid ongoing anger in Afghanistan and Pakistan over the numbers of innocent civilians killed by US forces during raids, air strikes and missile attacks by unmanned drones...

Is Gates Channeling Cheney on Iraq with "Last Gasp" Remark?

Nancy A. Youssef, McClatchy Newspapers: "Midway through a week of mayhem in Iraq, Defense Secretary Robert Gates raised eyebrows when he said the recent resurgence of violence in Baghdad was 'a last gasp' of Islamic extremists. It was an echo of former Vice President Dick Cheney, who in 2005 said the insurgency was 'in the last throes.' The following two years were the deadliest period of the war."
