US Military Concedes Afghan Civilian Casualties

Kamal Sadat, Reuters: "The US military has conceded that a raid this week by troops under its command in Afghanistan killed a group of civilians who were defending their home, not militants as it had earlier reported."

Residents' campaign to stop phone masts

Published Date: 10 April 2009

By Andy Hughes

CAMPAIGNING residents are urging people to object against plans for two mobile phone masts in a South Tyneside village.

Communications giant Vodafone plans to build the masts on two sites in Boldon – one in Western Terrace, West Boldon, and one on the Hutton Street Industrial Estate, Boldon Colliery.

People have only until Wednesday to object against the plans in Hutton Street, and until next Friday to object against the Western Terrace proposals.

Nearby residents to both sites have now formed the 'Boldon Against The Masts' group to fight against the projects.

Decade of darkness

CounterPunch
by Mike Whitney

Stockbrokers aren’t selling apples yet, but the velocity of present downturn is worse than the Great Depression. Manufacturing, industrial production, foreign trade, capital flows, consumer confidence, housing, and even stocks are falling faster today than after the crash of 1929. So far, Bernanke’s monetary bandaids have prevented the wholesale collapse of the financial system, but that could change. The economy continues its downhill slide and it looks like there’s nothing to stop it from falling further still...

Revolving door, bailout edition

Mother Jones
by Daniel Schulman and Jonathan Stein

04/09/09

Corporations hiring departed congressional staffers as lobbyists is a ho-hum practice on K Street. But the stakes are particularly high when these Capitol Hill vets are sicced on programs and legislation that are crucial to the country’s financial recovery and that involve massive amounts of government spending. In the past year, top bailout recipients, from Goldman Sachs to Bank of America to JPMorgan Chase, have dispatched more than 100 past congressional staffers and ex-government officials to shape the bailouts to their liking. This crew of well-connected lobbyists includes ex-employees of the congressional committees on banking, finance, and commerce; one-time aides to Democratic and Republican leaders; former Treasury officials; and a past aide to Rahm Emanuel, now the White House chief of staff. At least one former lawmaker has also gotten in on the action. Goldman Sachs, which has more than 30 ex-government officials registered to lobby on its behalf, tapped one-time House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.) to lobby his former colleagues in Congress on issues related to the Treasury Department’s Troubled Assets Relief Program...

The indefinite future of indefinite detention

Reason
by Jacob Sullum

Barack Obama promises to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by January. But the policy the prison has come to symbolize, indefinite military detention of terrorism suspects, is likely to continue. The form it takes will tell us a lot about the strength of Obama’s avowed commitment to protecting civil liberties. ‘I don’t think there’s any question but that we are at war’ with terrorists, Attorney General Eric Holder said at his confirmation hearing in January. We did not notice when the war began, he said, and we may never know when it ends. The battlefields are not only in Afghanistan but in countries around the world, including the United States. Holder was not just speaking figuratively... (for publication 05/09)

The suicide of the west

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

I had to laugh when I saw the headline blaring from one end of the Huffington Post to the other: ‘Pentagon Preps For Global Economic Warfare!’ Yikes! Man the battlements! Deploy the credit cards! Unleash the default credit swaps! And for the love of God speed up those printing presses at the Federal Reserve! The story in Politico deadpanned this hilarious news: ‘The Pentagon sponsored a first-of-its-kind war game last month focused not on bullets and bombs — but on how hostile nations might seek to cripple the U.S. economy, a scenario made all the more real by the global financial crisis.’ Why should these ‘hostile nations’ bother with a campaign to cripple our economy when we’re doing such a good job of it ourselves?

Why Republican Senators Are Holding The Torture Memos For Ransom

There was a story this week that Republican senators were threatening to "go nuclear" and filibuster EVERYTHING (as if they were not already doing that) if the Justice department released the secret memos that the Bush administration had drafted to their own evil specifications to say that torture was OK. If these apparently flimsy, self-serving documents were supposed to stand as a get out of jail free card for the Bush/Cheney torturers, they must be pretty damning stuff.

Indeed, if this was supposed to be their defense for war crimes, war crimes that have made us all dramatically less safe by exponentially ramping up hatred for the U.S. all over the world, they should be proud to display their defense in the full light of day. But it is Republican members of Congress who are desperately trying to get Obama to keep their filthy, treasonous secrets with them, so we must speak out to them in particular. Shame on the so-called rule of law crowd ... for abject, irredeemable shame. And on us as well unless we demand the immediate release of these legal hack jobs.

Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum963.php

The same judge in Spain, who everyone applauded when he reached out with the doctrine of univeral jurisdiction to nail Augusto Pinochet, has already drafted a 98 page complaint against the so-called attorneys (including Gonzales) who prostituted their craft to sign off on those patently craven atrocities. Accountability is coming. Justice is coming. The only question is whether there are enough true Americans in this country with the courage to make it happen.

Will we or will we not keep speaking out on this? We have no other moral and patriotic choice but to do so.

Progress On The Real Food Safety Actions

Thanks to the magnificent response to the food safety alerts we are starting to have an impact on what the agribusiness mega-corporations assumed would just be a mow down. Chellie Pingree has now REMOVED herself as a sponsor of the HR 875 because she now sees it would have "unintended consequences" (her own words) detrimental to small and organic farms, who are the salvation of our real food safety. We applaud new House Member Pingree for listening to the wisdom her constituents, what a representative is supposed to do.

Of course, it was the terminal vagueness of HR 875 which was our PRECISE and CORE complaint in the first place. We stand by the action page in every respect. And we're not going to be distracted by talk that DeLauro is now getting input from certain still unnamed organic food advocates (after we spoke out), or any of the other various nitpicking counterattacks we're heard. We know we are winning when they start attacking the people who are speaking the truth.

HR 875 is crop failure on arrival, and what we need instead is a REAL food safety bill that squarely confronts the real problems.

We are ESPECIALLY proud of our participants who used our free "create your own action page" functions to initiate their own independent support actions on this for their own mailing lists, for your work is large part of this victory in the making as well. And you can do the same thing on any issue of your own you care about.

Create Your Own Action Page Function: http://www.usalone.com/bladesofgrass.htm

A real food safety bill would require stringent, long term affirmative safety testing of any Genetically Mutated Organism (GMO) BEFORE it is introduced into our environment. The history of nature is replete with examples of ignorant, careless human meddling that has gone horribly wrong, and that without even creating new species. Gypsy moths in the Northeast, rabbits overrunning Australia, killer bees that could arrive any day now, the list is endless. And they are seriously talking about polluting our agricultural gene pool WITHOUT even considering the potentially dire and permanent consequences? What kind of arrogant lunacy is that?

A real food safety bill would compel full disclosure to the consumer of any food products with unnatural content, including milk contaminated with bovine growth hormone. The reason they are trying to keep the infiltration of our food supply with such products a secret is they know that wise, health conscious consumers would categorically reject them.

A real food safety bill would force large factory farms, to seriously clean up their act, to stop breeding animals in cramped, unhealthy conditions where they are force fed antibiotics that help breed the resistant superbugs like the one that killed an otherwise healthy teen recently in just 5 days. These concentrated animal filth operations (CAFOs) are the sole and exclusive source of all contaminating bacteria now invading even our vegetable fields, the root cause of every food recall and scare of late. It is the massive overflow of animal waste from these corporate cesspools that must be traced and STOPPED, not the well cared for flocks of small local farmers.

These are just some of the things that a real food safety bill would do. And we will not settle for pig in poke like HR 875 no matter how much lipstick they try to put on it. So if have not yet submitted our action page opposing the bad bill, please do so as well.

Stop HR 875 Action Page: http://www.peaceteam.net/action/pnum959.php

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Obama seeks $83.4 billion in war money

Louisville Courier-Journal

04/09/09

President Barack Obama asked Congress on Thursday for $83.4 billion for U.S. military and diplomatic operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, pressing for special troop funding that he opposed two years ago when he was senator and George W. Bush was president. Obama’s request, including money to send thousands more troops to Afghanistan, would push the costs of the two wars to almost $1 trillion since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to the Congressional Research Service. The additional money would cover operations into the fall...

Requiem for the War on Terror

Ira Chernus, TomDispatch.com: "This is the way the Global War on Terror (also known, in Bush-era jargon, as GWOT) ends, not with a bang, not with parades and speeches, but with an obscure memo, a few news reports, vague denials, and a seemingly off-handed comment (or was it a carefully calculated declaration?) from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: "The administration has stopped using the phrase ['war on terror'] and I think that speaks for itself. On Anniversary of Saddam's Fall, Iraqi Protesters Vent Against US

Jane Arraf, The Christian Science Monitor: "Tens of thousands of Iraqis crowded into the square Thursday where Saddam Hussein's statue was toppled, along with his regime, six years ago. Waving posters of Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr and demanding that President Obama fulfill his promise to withdraw US troops, their presence underscored the eagerness of many Iraqis to see the US leave - but also their apprehension about what comes next, especially after a week of bombings that have marred months of relative calm."

The Drugs of Capitalism

The Progressive Conscience in Action

Rev. Dr. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, The Center for American Progress: "A progressive moral vision is deeply connected to the exercise of conscience. But the interface between conscience and policymaking is poorly defined, making the concept of conscience susceptible to hijacking by conservative political forces."

http://www.truthout.org/040909F

The Drugs of Capitalism

Philosopher Francois Flahault, Le Monde: "As we have seen, the faith in self-regulation applied to financial markets is altogether illusory. But if the role attributed to it in economic theory is questionable, there's another role it plays that the theory does not discuss, but which it fulfills particularly well: convincing economic actors (especially the most powerful ones), and, where possible, politicians, that it is useless to concern themselves with the common good, useless to worry about the long term. One need only leave it to the invisible hand: natural providence which all by itself achieves the common good."

When two officers arrived at the front door, Poplawski shot them both in the head, and then killed another officer who tried to rescue his colleagues. In the wake of the bloodbath, we learned that Poplawski was something of a conspiracy nut who embraced dark, radical rhetoric about America."

Measuring up for phone mast fight

Thursday, April 09, 2009, 09:20

A MOBILE phone mast could be built less than 50 feet from a row of terrace houses – but angry residents are preparing to fight against it.

The green at the junction of Newpool Terrace and Tower Hill Road, in Biddulph, is being considered by Vodafone as a possible location for a base station and pole.

Engineers from the company have carried out preliminary investigations at the site and although a planning application has not yet been submitted, the company has ruled out at least six other areas nearby in favour of the green space, which is in a residential area.

Man is bowled out after mast battle

Cameron Low has been suspended for a year by Burnside Bowling Club

by Catriona Stewart

A GRANDAD is locked in a war of words with his bowling club.

Cameron Low claims the Burnside Bowling Club committee banished him from the clubhouse after he campaigned against two mobile masts.

The club says he can't come back unless he appears before a disciplinary committee and apologises.

But the pensioner, who joined Burnside ten years ago, has dug in his heels - and vowed to take his plight to parliament.

The retired management consultant has appealed to both Holyrood and Westminster for help toppling the club's "kangaroo court".

Arbeitslose bekommen weniger Geld.

= wildcat und direkte Aktion) das Zeichen der Wobblies (IWW, Industrial Workers of the World).

Can the G-20 save the world, or wreck it?

Foundation for Economic Education
by William Anderson

04/08/09

While the political leaders of 20 countries around the globe met in London ostensibly to ’save’ the global economy, demonstrators outside chanted for the world to ‘abolish money.’ Given the direction that these ‘leaders’ have decided to follow — by throwing another trillion dollars into that financial black hole known as the International Monetary Fund — it won’t be long before governments everywhere have destroyed money to the point where it might as well be abolished. One way to gauge the success of a political gathering such as the G-20 is to read the comments from the politicians — and the economists...

A politics of national sacrifice

Serve America lets Congress take another bow

Cato Institute
by Gene Healy

04/07/09

Last week, the House passed the Serve America Act (SAA), which will triple the number of federally funded ‘volunteer’ positions, create a ‘Clean Energy Corps’ to weatherize homes, and make September 11th a ‘National Day of Service.’ Like many federal assaults on the taxpayer, the SAA is a bipartisan offense: It passed by huge margins in both houses. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-MA, the primary sponsor, got a standing ovation after the vote was in, and co-sponsor Orrin Hatch, the Utah Republican, gushed that ‘the whole Kennedy family has been a service family.’ Hatch’s statement neatly captures the fallacy behind the act — the notion that service to America is principally service to the American state...

A politics of national sacrifice

The American Prospect
by Kevin Mattson

04/08/09

On July 15, 1979, President Jimmy Carter gave the riskiest speech of his presidency. In what became known as the ‘malaise speech’ (though the word ‘malaise’ never appeared in it) the president riveted the nation. He delivered the speech amid rumors that he had gone crazy, his reputation plummeting in the face of an energy crisis and a breakdown in the country’s civic fabric. Ten days earlier, truckers and residents had rioted in usually quiet Levittown, Pennsylvania, setting bonfires to protest inflationary costs and limited supplies of fuel, made worse by recent machinations of OPEC. Abroad at the time of the riot, Carter cut short his vacation and returned to the States. His staff scheduled a televised speech, but the president canceled it...

Freedom is scary!

Liberty For All
by Jessica Pacholski

04/08/09

Robert Heinlein wrote that ‘People fall into two categories: Those who wish to rule and those who have no such desire.’ I have never had any desire to lead, I also have no desire to follow, mostly I’ve always just wanted to do my own thing and allow others the same latitude. I don’t think I know what’s right for the world, mostly because over the last 36 years I have only been able to figure out what’s right for me. I know the laws I live by and they are not externally enforced, but rather my own code that I developed through trial and error. I have no need to force these views on others. However, I know the world is filled with people looking for a savior or looking to be one...

America: A superpower no more

Christian Science Monitor
by Walter Rodgers

04/08/09

These events are the latest warnings that our world is changing far more rapidly and profoundly than we — or our politicians — will admit. America’s own triple-A rating, its superpower status, is being downgraded as rapidly as its economy. President Obama’s recent acknowledgement that the US is not winning in Afghanistan is but the most obvious recognition of this jarring new reality. … The global landscape is littered with evidence that America’s superpower status is fraying...

To The Governments and People of Earth: A Declaration of Separation

Free and Unashamed
by anonymous

We claim the right to exist, and we will defend it. We do not seek to overthrow anything. We do not seek to control anything. We merely wish to be left alone. All we ever wanted was to live in peace with our friends and neighbors. For a long, long time we bore insults to our liberty; we took blows, we did what we could to avoid injury and we worked through the system to get the offenses to stop. That has now changed...

Ways of changing the world

Ideas
by David Friedman

04/08/09

I see democracy as equipped, like a microscope, with a coarse control and a fine control. The fine control is special interest lobbying, the coarse control is majority voting. It is coarse because of rational ignorance. Voters know their vote has a negligible effect on outcomes and so have no incentive to acquire the information they would need in order to do a good job of making sure that governments do good things instead of bad things. The result is that how they vote and the outcome of their voting are largely driven by free information — what everyone knows, whether or not it is true...

The people’s bailout

Adam Smith Institute
by Tom Clougherty

04/08/09

Oxfam has a new report out today, calling for a ‘people’s bailout.’ Their argument is that a fifth of the population already lives in poverty and millions more will become more vulnerable as a result of the recession, and that something must be done. Of course, Oxfam uses a relative definition of poverty, whereas what really matters is absolute poverty. Poverty is about being unable to satisfy basic needs, not just about having less than others. But let’s leave that aside for now, because however you define ‘poverty,’ it is clear that there are already plenty of people in Britain who struggle to make ends meet, and that the recession is only going to make that worse...

A medical version of the Patriot Act?

The computerization of personal health care records is one of the showcases of the stimulus. New Military Electronic Records to Be Model for US

Jeff Mason, Reuters: "President Barack Obama on Thursday said the government would create a national electronic medical records system for the military that will serve as a model for broad reform of US healthcare administration. The system, organized by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs, would follow military personnel from active duty through retirement, keeping records organized and complete."

Do US Drones Kill Pakistani Extremists or Recruit Them?

Jonathan S. Landay, McClatchy Newspapers: "Even as the Obama administration launches new drone attacks into Pakistan's remote tribal areas, concerns are growing among US intelligence and military officials that the strikes are bolstering the Islamic insurgency by prompting Islamist radicals to disperse into the country's heartland."

http://www.truthout.org/040809S

The Scream and the Drone

J. Sri Raman, Truthout: "The scream of 17-year-old Chand Bibi of the Swat Valley has been heard across Pakistan for over a week now. The drone of remotely operated US gunships over the country's mountainous western frontier has been heard for months. What the world needs to hear now is the voice of Pakistan in response to both the scream and the drone. Much of the world has by now heard the scream, too, and watched the merciless flogging of the teenage girl as Taliban punishment for alleged transgression of a misogynist code of morality: she had been caught coming out of her house with a male 'stranger.' The date of the incident was not clear and versions of it differed in minor detail. The local Taliban leader, however, proudly owned up to the punishment meted out for the insinuated, 'anti-Islam' offense."
