One in Ten Americans Receive Food Stamps

reuters.com — A record 32.2 million people — one in every 10 Americans — received food stamps at the latest count, a reflection of the recession now in its 16th month. Food stamps, the major U.S. anti-hunger program, help poor people buy groceries. The average benefit was $112.82 per person in January. The January figure marks the third time in five months that enrollment set a record. The U.S. unemployment rate was 8.1 percent in February, the highest in 25 years. New claims for jobless benefits totaled 669,000 last week, the highest in 26 years. Food stamp enrollment rose in 46 of the 50 states during January as the national total rose by 580,000 people, or 1.3 percent, from December, when the previous record was set, said Agriculture Department figures.

Families celebrate mast victory

DAN GRIMMER

03 April 2009 17:00

Families have won their battle to prevent another mobile phone mast from being built on their doorsteps, after councillors blocked the proposal.

People living in the Earlham area of Norwich had already contested eight masts and four appeals on the basis they were an unsightly blight on the area where they live.

And this week, members of Norwich City Council's planning committee blocked a proposal by communications giant Orange to build a 12m imitation telegraph police in Earlham Green Lane.

Fourteen letters of object to the plans were sent to City Hall questioning the need for the mast, saying it would be unsightly and raising concerns about the health impact of mast emissions.

Commodifying Kids: The Forgotten Crisis

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "As the United States and the rest of the world enter into an economic free fall, the current crisis offers an opportunity not only to question the politics of free-market fundamentalism, the dominance of economics over politics, and the subordination of justice to the laws of finance and the accumulation of capital, but also the ways in which children's culture has been corrupted by rampant commercialization, commodification and consumption."

Stimulating the economy into the ground

Campaign For Liberty
by William Anderson

04/02/09

Not long ago, it seemed that the economic possibilities in this country were endless. The unemployment rate was low, the official inflation numbers seemed to be in check, and the housing market was booming. Who would have thought — other than some of those pessimistic Austrian economists — that the United States really had what Peter Schiff has called a ‘phony economy?’ Today, as unemployment creeps toward double digits and economic growth is headed south, people clearly understand that the U.S. economy is in trouble and, naturally, they want to blame someone...

On Tea Parties and Republican hypocrisy

The Liberty Papers
by Jason Pye

04/01/09

As you may already know, there will be nationwide protests on April 15th, Tax Day, to protest spending and tax hikes by the Obama Administration. These protests, referred to as Tea Parties, have taken place nearly every week since Friday, February 27th (yours truly attended the Atlanta Tea Party and was interviewed by Neil Cavuto on Fox News about the events) and have been gaining notoriety and slowly more people are attending. The protest here in Atlanta had around 300 people, not bad for a cold, rainy day. Other cities have seen as many as a few thousand people show up. These protests serve do a purpose, despite what pseudo-libertarian talk show host, Neal Boortz, says or believes. They show that everyday Americans want less spending, less government and personal responsibility. However, they are at risk of being co-opted by Republicans who either stood silently or only gave passive criticism to the spending spree of George W. Bush...

End abuse of power by removing the power to abuse

Liberty For All
by Barbara Howe

04/02/09

The ‘voter owned elections’ bills currently circulating in the General Assembly will do nothing to end corruption in government. Like most legislation, the title belies the real intent. Rather than ensure voter ownership of elections, the bills will strengthen the grip of the Democrat-Republican duopoly that controls our state government. No doubt many sponsors of these bills are sincere in their desire to end corruption. They’re well meaning — but misguided. In their quest to legislate morality, they entirely miss the real problem...

Obama: The hollow man

Liberty Unbound
by Jim Walsh

for publication 05/09

Normally, I try not to think too much about presidents. The mainstream media focus excessively on them, cheapening the quality of political discourse. As a result, American citizens who are inclined to talk about politics regurgitate pointless trivia about the White House occupant and staff — things they’ve heard on National Public Radio or seen on TV. But we have a new occupant in the White House, one whom the popular media laud as a visionary and transformative figure. To anyone who loves liberty, this overwrought praise is by itself a cause for skepticism. And skepticism is surely warranted, on many grounds...

America’s “Long War”

TruthDig
by William Pfaff

04/02/09

The Thirty Years’ War occupies little space in the school texts of the English-speaking world, but its futility comes to mind when Richard Holbrooke, a civilian closer than most foreign policy appointees to realism, indicates that the war he is supposed to manage, now the Af-Pak war, is the entry passageway into another stage in the war. George W. Bush’s war on terror was the front door, and Barack Obama now has gone through the waiting room door into what the Pentagon has prepared for him, our very own thirty years’ war: purposeless, neither winnable nor losable short of genocidal measures — or, as in the 17th century, by laying waste the lands and ruining nations...

Beyond Afghanistan: Choosing nonviolence

Common Dreams
by War Resisters League

04/02/09

As we approach the April 4 anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s great 1967 ‘Beyond Vietnam’ speech in New York City’s Riverside Church, the War Resisters League reiterates King’s urgent cry for nonviolence and nonviolent resistance. The parallels between the war in Afghanistan and the U.S. war against Vietnam fill us with foreboding. While we adamantly oppose continued U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan and Pakistan, we also call upon people of conscience to think beyond Afghanistan and challenge, as King did, ‘the giant triplets of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism’...

Vulnerable Supply Lines Put US Mission at Risk

Shahan Mufti, GlobalPost: "As President Obama sets in motion a new strategic initiative in Afghanistan and Pakistan, supply lines remain vulnerable to attack and a black market is still thriving in stolen military hardware and computers. As the US begins a surge of 21,000 troops and military advisers in Afghanistan over the summer, the threat to supply lines and the stolen equipment could compromise the mission, military analysts say. More than six weeks after GlobalPost broke the news of American military hardware and software being sold openly in markets in Pakistan's northwest, the trade of American goods robbed from supply trucks and smuggled in from Afghanistan is still going on."

Big Brother is watching: surveillance box to track drivers is backed

Surprising that this article is in the UK national paper "The Guardian" because it has hardly ever reports anything about cellphone and mast health risks. The rest of the British national papers do report health risks and also cancer clusters. It is sad to think that the British publish are not only riaking their health but also paying for their own total surveillance. Even George Orwell in his book "1984" didn't have Big Brother make the British prols pay for their own surveillance.

Out West, a New Kind of Water War

DeeDee Correll, The Los Angeles Times: "In rural Chaffee County, Colorado, one of the world's largest beverage companies has discovered water it deems fit for a bottle: clean and crisp, with the mountain spring flavor people are willing to pay for. Nestle Waters North America wants to tap an aquifer feeding a pair of springs near Salida, southwest of Colorado Springs, and draw 65 million gallons of water per year to bottle and sell under its Arrowhead brand. Sandwell Gateway Icon

Your help required urgently if you travel through Junction 9 on the M6, Wednesbury.

Sandwell council have received a revised planning application for the "Sandwell Gateway Icon".

The original application contained a section which included at least two mobile telephone mast systems to be howsed within the structure. Application DC/08/50100. http://planapps.sandwell.gov.uk/MULTIWAM/showCaseFile.do?appType=Planning&appNumber=DC/08/50100

The recent application has dropped this part. It is our contention that this will enable the structure to stand more chance of being approved, and then at a later date the masts will be installed as there would then be no reason to reject on the grounds of loss of amenity or eyesore etc, as the antenna would be enclosed within the structure and not be seen.

Briefly the Icon will be an 80 meters long and 75 meteres high 3D advertising edific which will be lit up 24/7. A monstrosity.

You can view details at the following sandwell web site:-

http://planapps.sandwell.gov.uk/MULTIWAM/showCaseFile.do?appType=Planning&appNumber=DC/09/5641A

We would appreciate any assistance you can give by objecting to this application (DC/09/5641A) on the grounds of safety, or for anyone who lives in the area, eyesore and loss of amenity etc. at

http://webcaps.sandwell.gov.uk/PublicAccess/tdc/DcApplication/application_comments_entryform.aspx?caseno=KGCQ4QNR03300

The original application was withdrawn, as the developer had a 500 name petition submitted to planning, including w-a-r-t and other residents written objections.

It is vital that if you do object as travellers or visitors to the area that your objections are sent BEFORE APRIL 8th.

Thanks in advance

Peter & Ann Mobley

The Fall of the Presidential Pardon

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "Although all recent presidents have granted few pardons, Bush's rate was exceptionally low. He tied with his father for the lowest-ever percentage of granted pardons (conviction reversals) - 9.8 percent - and he granted an astonishingly tiny number of requested commutations (shortened sentences): 0.012 percent. Bush's abstinence on the pardon front had some of his friends grumbling (Dick Cheney complained, poetically, that the president had left Scooter Libby 'hanging in the wind'), but it was a relief to many of his critics. The word 'pardon' conjured up images of Libby, Stevens and GOP Congressman-turned-felon Randy Cunningham - not the thousands of nonviolent offenders languishing in federal prisons across the country."

BKA und Telekom rastern illegal die Bevölkerung

2. April 2009

Zur Enthüllung der rechtswidrigen Rasterung aller Telekomkunden durch BKA und Telekom erklärt das Mitglied des Parteivorstandes Jan Korte
(MdB):

Delight as Lyme mast plan is dropped

10:32am Thursday 2nd April 2009

By Adrianne Maslen

OBJECTORS to a new mobile phone mast say their fight has been won after the plans were scrapped this week.

Phone company Telefónica O2 wanted to raise a 20m transmitter on a piece of derelict land in Lyme Regis Industrial Estate to improve network coverage in the area.

Anxious residents living near the site launched a campaign to stop the move claiming it would seriously put their health at risk and create an unsightly blot on the landscape.

They also had major concerns for the wellbeing of the hundreds of Woodroffe School pupils who use the footpath just metres from the proposed site.

Obama follows in Hoover’s footsteps

OpenMarket.org
by Hans Bader

04/01/09

During the Great Depression, Herbert Hoover damaged the economy, and impoverished the American people, with costly, artificial attempts to stimulate the economy through increased government spending, financed by heavy taxes like the Revenue Act of 1932. Obama is now doing the same thing through his proposed $2 trillion cap-and-trade tax scheme. That tax fulfills his prediction in 2008 to the San Francisco Chronicle (which didn’t report it) that ‘Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket’...

Too big to succeed

Foundation for Economic Education
by Lawrence W. Reed

04/01/09

In 1890, Americans were outraged that their House of Representatives in Washington spent a record billion dollars in just two years’ time. They punished the ‘Billion Dollar Congress’ in the elections that year by making the majority party the minority party, cutting its roster in the House by more than 90 seats. Think about that. The American people were mad as wet hens because Congress spent half a billion dollars in twelve months and then another half billion again the very next year. But the lawmakers of 1890 were skinflints compared to the porkers in Washington these days...

Death on the homefront

Common Dreams

by Ann Jones

04/01/09

Wake up, America. The boys are coming home, and they’re not the boys who went away.

On New Year’s Day, the New York Times welcomed the advent of 2009 by reporting that, since returning from Iraq, nine members of the Fort Carson, Colorado, Fourth Brigade Combat team had been charged with homicide. Five of the murders they were responsible for took place in 2008 when, in addition, “charges of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault” at the base rose sharply. Some of the murder victims were chosen at random; four were fellow soldiers — all men. Three were wives or girlfriends. This shouldn’t be a surprise. Men sent to Iraq or Afghanistan for two, three, or four tours of duty return to wives who find them “changed” and children they barely know...

In for a penny, in for $2.98 trillion

The Nation
by Robert Scheer

04/01/09

The good news on the government’s ‘No Banker Left Behind’ program is that according to the special inspector general’s report on Tuesday, the total handout to date is still less than 3 trillion dollars. It’s only 2.98 trillion to be precise, an amount six times greater than will be spent by federal, state and local governments this year on educating the fifty million American children in elementary and secondary schools. The bad news is that even greater amounts of money are to be thrown down what has to be the world record for rat holes...

Obama’s surge

Asia Times
by Pepe Escobar

04/01/09

President Barack Obama is selling the US’s military surge in Afghanistan and Pakistan as nation-building based on trust. A hard sell if there ever was one - as Washington cannot trust the Pakistani government or security forces, while the Pakistanis don’t trust Washington. Can nation-building be done by Predator drones? Will this become Obama’s Vietnam? Whatever it is, it’s not about “terrorists”. Not really...

Surging further into the Afghan abyss

CounterPunch
by Chris Floyd

04/01/09

The political class has failed us. At every level, they have failed us. Republican and Democrat, they have failed us. Liberal, conservative and centrist, they have failed us. They have lived on lies, and lived by lies, for so long that they no longer know how to comprehend the truth, much less communicate it or – God forbid – act on it. And so they plow on deeper into the darkness, in zombified pursuit of pointless goals, heedless of the signposts warning of danger, like some demented wagon train dragging a load of dead mules toward the edge of a cliff...

Corruption in America's Banks?

Bill Moyers Journal: "The financial industry brought the economy to its knees, but how did they get away with it? With the nation wondering how to hold the bankers accountable, Bill Moyers sits down with Bill Black, the former senior regulator who cracked down on banks during the savings and loan crisis of the 1980's. Black offers his analysis of what went wrong and his critique of the bailout. Also, Bill Moyers talks with alternative media heavyweights Glenn Greenwald and Amy Goodman about what can and can't be addressed in big corporate media."
