Tell Congress: Ban Shark Finning

Save Sharks

The new Congress has hit the ground running, with the introduction of the Shark Conservation Act (HR 81). This bill would require that sharks caught in all U.S. waters be landed whole with their fins still attached. Please tell your Representative to help ensure fast passage of this important piece of legislation.

The Bush Family's Secrets

Frederick Clarkson, Religion Dispatches: "There remain astounding hidden dimensions involving the skills of 'spy craft' acquired in a lifetime of covert intelligence activities by George H.W. ('Poppy') Bush and many of his closest associates. This, according to a just-published investigative history of the Bush political dynasty, 'Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, the Powerful Forces that Put it in the White House, and what Their Influence Means for America' (Bloomsbury Press, 2008). Author Russ Baker shows, among other things, that Poppy Bush's well-known service as a Navy pilot in World War II was also part of his work for Naval Intelligence. This set the stage for an astonishing double life participating in covert operations of the Central Intelligence Agency throughout his career."

Democrats: Ignored IG Advice Could Have Saved $25 Billion

David Goldstein, McClatchy Newspapers: "Some congressional Democrats claim that the Bush administration could have saved more than $25 billion since 2001 if it had implemented nearly 14,000 cost-saving measures that its own watchdogs recommended. The recommendations came from inspectors general in various federal agencies. By law, federal agencies are supposed to act on inspector general reports within a year."

Budget Deficit to Hit $1.2 Trillion in Fiscal 2009

Richard Cowan and Jeremy Pelofsky, Reuters: "The US budget deficit will swell to a record $1.186 trillion in fiscal 2009, congressional forecasters said on Wednesday, the result of an economic recession that has cut tax receipts and caused massive government bailouts of banks and automakers. The out-of-control deficit picture by the Congressional Budget Office illustrates the daunting economic challenges President-elect Barack Obama faces when he takes office on January 20."

Many Americans do love their police state

Civil Liberties Examiner
by JD Tucille

01/05/09

Scattered through the comments to yesterday’s column about a Customs and Border Patrol stop of a passenger train that never crossed the boundaries of the United States are little gems of the sort that I’ve come to dread and anticipate in equal parts: praise for the government for behaving in an arbitrary and heavy-handed manner. Unfortunately, all too many of our friends, neighbors and relations have come to relish acting like bit players in a bad Cold War film. They’re more than happy to bow down to the nearest uniform so long as somebody assures them it will ‘keep us safe’ — from whom, it doesn’t matter, though it’s certainly not from overbearing authorities...

Stop Censoring International News in America

Information Clearinghouse
by Timothy V. Gatto

01/07/09

In every year that passes, our mainstream media becomes more and more like ‘The Ministry of Truth’ in 1984. It is so easily observed in conversations with those that get their news from the mainstream media. The difference in opinion between those that know the full story and those that prefer to ‘trust’ the commercial media is like the difference between night and day. … Americans must realize that our media is not telling the entire truth, not only about Israel and Gaza, but just about every international event. The media actually twists the truth to correlate with the State Department on foreign affairs. This gives the illusion that America is always on God’s side, and supports the ‘good fight.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. The United States supports any country that can further their mindless wars against Islam and Arabs. When will this stop?

Bush and the damage done

Salon
by Vincent Rossmeier and Gabriel Winant

01/08/09

After a couple of presidential terms, mismanagement in every area of policy — foreign, domestic, even extraterrestrial — starts to add up. When George W. Bush entered the White House in January 2001, he inherited peace and prosperity. The military, the Constitution and New Orleans were intact and the country had a budget surplus of $128 billion. Now he’s about to dash out the door, leaving a large, unpaid bill for his successors to pay. To get a sense of what kind of balance is due, Salon spoke to experts in seven different fields. Wherever possible, we have tried to express the damage done in concrete terms — sometimes in lives lost, but most often just in money spent and dollars owed. What follows is an incomplete inventory of eight years of mis- and malfeasance, but then a fuller accounting would run, um, somewhat longer than three pages...

New Trouble for an Obama Nominee

Admiral Dennis Blair Aided Perpetrators of 1999 Church Killings in East Timor.

--------

Tell The Senate To Reject Nominee Admiral Blair Who Greenlighted Genocide

True progressives have found various Obama appointments so far to leave much to be desired . . . even to the point of being disturbing. But the nomination of Admiral Dennis Blair for Director of National Intelligence cannot be permitted to pass under any circumstances.

As reported by Democracy Now, when genocidal monsters in the Indonesian military were committing massacres in East Timor, Admiral Blair DEFIED his orders to get them to stop, and instead gave them encouragement to continue. He then lied to Congress about it all. No such loose cannon with such blood on his hands can be allowed in the new administration. The links to both these video stories can be found on the Reject Blair Action Page below:

Reject Blair Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/reject_blair.php

Director of National Intelligence requires Senate confirmation, so please also call your Senators directly tollfree at 800-828-0498, 800-473-6711, especially if you have new Senators coming in, ask for them by name and leave your message opposing this appointment.

Torture Question You Voted For Is Now Breaking National News Story

All of our participants who voted for the special prosecutor for torture question had a real impact this week. The fact that we the people voted this question number one on the Obama "change" site made the New York Times, got a featured segment on Keith Olbermann and there is more to come.

As our focus shifts now to prosecuting the current criminal residents of the White House for what they have done, we are happy to report we just got in the first huge delivery of the new "Convict Dick & W" caps. We'll be working all weekend to get the ones you have already requested ready for shipment, so there is still time to get in on the first mailing if you request yours now.

Convict Dick & W Caps: http://www.usalone.com/convict_cap.php

And the extra special news is that just before we went into production we asked the embroidery digitizer to hang a little cowboy hat on the "W" in the "Convict Dick & W". Yes, a little cowboy hat for a very small and cowardly man, the cowboy from Connecticut, our first presidential convicted felon to be, George W. Bush. It's perfect, in red, white and blue.

We are not setting a price for these. You can have one for a contribution of any amount. We just want to put as many out there as possible. And we will have much more news for you soon about planned actions to pressure prosecutors at all levels to step up to the plate and do their duty.

AIDS Bike Ride Support Page

We heard from one of our participants already about the upcoming AIDS/Lifecycle 8 bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, starting May 31, 2009, to raise awareness for those living with HIV/AIDS. We would like to set up a support page for this worthy event on our site. So please if there are any other of our participants interested who are involved in this please email back so we can include you.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

A Military Dictatorship Coming To America?

THE WORSENING ECONOMIC CRISIS has prompted the US Army War College to issue a report urging the use of military troops to contain possible civil unrest throughout America. Entitled, Strategic Shocks in Defense Strategy Development, issued on November 4, 2008, the report argues that the US military must prepare for a "violent domestic dislocation provoked by an economic collapse."

Hey, Obama: Government can’t be Mr. Fix-it
Fox Forum

by Dan Gainor

01/14/09

A few years ago, the Securities and Exchange Commission looked at Bernie Madoff’s operation and said it was doing things just fine. Madoff then allegedly went on to scam $50 billion from unknowing investors. Congress instituted the Alternative Minimum Tax to go after a couple millionaires but forgot to adjust it for inflation. It now threatens as many as 24 million taxpayers each year. Government brought us the Katrina fiasco, a broken immigration process and the Department of Motor Vehicles. … Traditional conservatives understand what Ronald Reagan said that government isn’t the solution, government is the problem. And Obama will only make the problem bigger. What’s ironic is that, at the very same time Obama is supporting the expansion of government, he’s pointing out what a miserable failure it can be...

United States Re-emerges as Leading Arms Supplier to the Developing World

Rachel Stohl, Center for Defense Information: "On Oct. 23, 2008, the Congressional Research Service released the most recent version of its annual arms transfer report, 'Conventional Arms Transfers to Developing Nations, 2000-2007.' According to the report, U.S. arms agreements to both developed and developing countries increased from 2006 levels, re-establishing the U.S. position of top arms supplier to the developing world, a position that Russia claimed in 2006."

Obama's Black Widow

Nat Hentoff, The Village Voice: "Barack Obama will be in charge of the biggest domestic and international spying operation in history. Its prime engine is the National Security Agency (NSA) - located and guarded at Fort Meade, Maryland, about 10 miles northeast of Washington, D.C. A brief glimpse of its ever-expanding capacity was provided on October 26 by The Baltimore Sun's national security correspondent, David Wood: 'The NSA's colossal Cray supercomputer, code-named the 'Black Widow,' scans millions of domestic and international phone calls and e-mails every hour.... The Black Widow, performing hundreds of trillions of calculations per second, searches through and reassembles key words and patterns, across many languages.'"

Concerned at phone mast plans

Published Date: 08 January 2009

By Staff reporter

A COUNCILLOR concerned about the construction of mobile phone base stations around Carrickfergus wants residents opposed to new masts to give planners a piece of their mind.

Alderman David Hilditch told this week’s meeting of the Borough Council that his office has received “quite vociferous” objections to proposals by Vodafone to site telecommunications equipment at the North Road service reservoir.

An application, which Planning Service says it is content to approve, envisages a 20 metre-high lattice tower housing three antennae and two dishes, with an adjacent equipment cabinet and surrounded by a 1.8m fence.

Bush’s final purge

In These Times
by Christopher Moraff

01/05/09

The Bush administration is reportedly using its final months in office to exact retribution on federal employees who have spoken out against agency policies during the past eight years. Since April, the administration has dismissed — or notified of pending dismissal — more than a dozen federal whistleblowers, according to Marsha Coleman-Adebayo, founder of the civil rights group No Fear Coalition and director of the National Whistleblowers Center. Some have come as recently as November. They include staffers at the Departments of Commerce, Labor, Education and Transportation. And, Coleman-Adebayo says, those are only the employees who are willing to go on record...

Stimulus Time: The Fierce Urgency of Now

Mark Weisbrot, The Center for Economic and Policy Research: "Nobody needs to be told that our economy is going down the tubes at a rate unseen for decades. Every week brings new numbers that are setting records. In just the three months ending in November the job loss was 1.26 million, the worst since 1975. We have lost more than 2 million jobs in 2008."

Stimulus Plan: The Need and the Size

Robert Reich: "The core problem we face is not access to capital. The Treasury has already flooded Wall Street and the banking system with money, committing nearly $350 billion; the Federal Reserve Board has exchanged Treasury bills for some $2.2 trillion of troubled assets; other agencies, such as the FDIC, have guaranteed trillions more. But there has been no appreciable result. Banks will not lend because they fear borrowers will not repay; businesses will not borrow because they do not have adequate markets for their goods and services; individuals cannot and will not borrow because they do not have enough reliable income to do so."

Obama’s terrible stimulus

The Liberty Papers
by Kevin

01/06/09

Obama’s plan is terrible for many reasons. The first obvious reason is that the country really cannot afford any new spending after blowing at least $8.4 trillion (in an overall economy of $13.8 trillion and shrinking) in bailouts for Bush and Paulson’s friends in the financial sector. The second reason is that very little of this new spending is actually permitted in the U.S. Constitution. The Federal government cannot ‘invest’ in ‘green collar jobs’ or any other type of jobs for that matter. The Federal government has no Constitutional role in education spending (which is another part of Obama’s ‘plan’). Thirdly, the areas where you can argue a legitimate duty of the Federal government, highway construction, is prone to abuse and wasteful spending through the earmarking process (which is the currency for corruption)...

More on the bogus Obama “jobs” program

Classically Liberal
by CLS

01/06/09

A construction worker hired to build some bike path, merely to create employment, at least builds a bike path. Sure his pay comes from taxing productive jobs and thus reducing their numbers. But as bad as that is the construction worker isn’t inflicting additional harm on the economy when he works. Government employees are largely destructive. They are paid for from the productive sector. But that is not the harm they inflict. More bureaucrats, doing what bureaucrats do, is destructive. They regulate, control and manipulate in ways that benefits themselves or their political masters. I have little doubt that Obama wants an additional 600,000 government workers since the trade union for bureaucrats tends to fund Democratic candidates. An addition 600,000 federal leeches will provide votes for the Democrats and a ready-made lobby group to push for more federal bureaucrats. Unlike the make-work jobs Obama will create these employees will be entirely unproductive and have negative value...

Stories of ambitious men being corrupted by the political game have been plentiful since my youth. It amazes me, here amid many calls for the government to take an ever more active role in our country’s doings, that so many of these cautionary tales seem to be forgotten. … FBI investigations and anti-bribery laws will never take the corruption out of politics. The best way to limit it is to keep government small, with few jobs to fill and limited money to spend...

For real stimulus

National Center for Policy Analysis
by staff

01/06/09

Congress is ready to ram through a half-baked stimulus package costing as much as $1 trillion. But if it’s stimulus we need, why not make it effective stimulus — tax cuts, say, instead of wasteful spending? The massive new spending program that is being pushed by congressional Democrats emboldened by their newly enhanced majorities may come up as soon as Tuesday, when they return from their holiday breaks.”

The End of the Financial World as We Know It

"Greed" doesn't cut it as a satisfying explanation for the current financial crisis. Greed was necessary but insufficient; in any case, we are as likely to eliminate greed from our national character as we are lust and envy. The fixable problem isn't the greed of the few but the misaligned interests of the many.

Insulting the Constitution

Boston Globe

01/06/09

Within weeks after taking office, President-elect Barack Obama will have a chance to draw a line between the Bush administration’s fast-and-loose treatment of the Constitution and his own commitment to stick to its terms in cases involving suspected terrorists. In 2001 in Illinois, US officials arrested a student from Qatar and later accused him of being an Al Qaeda sleeper agent. Since 2003, the administration has held the student, Ali al-Marri, as an enemy combatant without proving its suspicions before a jury. … Obama should end the government’s attempt to hold Marri in this way and decide whether to deport him or to try him in federal court on criminal charges...
