Residents protest over mobile mast

Thursday, 27 November 2008

RESIDENTS in Dublin 8 say they have serious concerns about proposals to install mobile phone communications equipment on an apartment block.

Dublin City Council has already refused permission for an application to erect a mobile communications aerial extending to a height of 40m above ground level, located on top of a block of 28 apartments on Basin Lane.

In addition, they want to erect a four-sided advertising structure for the exhibition of advertising on digital media screens located on top of the building, as well as a 3.4m high fibreglass pint glass shape advertising structure.

In refusing permission for the mobile phone equipment, the city council said: “The proposed mobile aerial, by virtue of its location in a residential area and adjacent to existing school buildings, would be contrary to the provisions of the Dublin City Development Plan in respect of telecommunications antennae.”

Suppressed Speech Of Wamsutta (Frank B.) James, Wampanoag

The Wampanoag Indians reflect on the anniversary of the Pilgrims' arrival, and the first Thanksgiving.

Three hundred fifty years after the Pilgrims began their invasion of the land of the Wampanoag, their "American" descendants planned an anniversary celebration. Still clinging to the white schoolbook myth of friendly relations between their forefathers and the Wampanoag, the anniversary planners thought it would be nice to have an Indian make an appreciative and complimentary speech at their state dinner.

The Obama "Dream Team"

Rubin-clones And Other Fakers

By Mike Whitney

Does Paulson think he can "turn off" the public's pessimism like a light switch? Does Bernanke think he can get people to spend themselves further into debt by lowering interest rates? It can't be done. And the Obama camp is going to run into the same brick wall. The nation's confidence has been shaken and people are developing a bunker mentality.

Bones

By John S. Hatch

A new day needs to dawn in America, and that is what President elect Obama has promised. But that can't occur if the past is not acknowledged and reconciled. A harmless skeleton or two left behind in a White House closet is one thing. But in this case the rattling of bones could drown out Mr. Obama's eloquent voice and poison his Presidency.

Facts missing on mobile masts

27 November 2008

CLLR GARY Staight missed some key facts from central government guidelines (Recorder Letters, November 6) indicating the need to contact schools and colleges before installation of a mast at, or near, their premises.

Redbridge College is less than 100m from the proposed installation and has indicated apprehension.

Moreover, the government attaches considerable importance to keeping the numbers of radio and telecommunications masts, and of the sites for such installations, to the minimum consistent with the efficient operations of the network, and promote sharing of facilities between operators.

Caroline Lucas, MEP: Correspondence about Mobile Phones and Electromagentic Fields

Caroline has objected to a vast number of mobile phone mast applications - too many to list here. You can however, read her correspondence with the European Commission and the UK and other authorities.

She has called consistently for a moratorium on mast installations and the rolling out of new technology until there is sufficient independent evidence to guarantee their safety. This approach, in keeping with the precautionary principle, is in marked contrast to the position adopted by industry and government, which assumes they are safe until proven otherwise. In recent years, Caroline's focus has been to secure funding for research at EU level.

Mobile company turnaround over Fetcham mast

Thursday, November 27, 2008, 07:00

A mobile phone company is considering alternatives for one of its masts following pressure from residents.

Last week the Advertiser reported how Vodafone was set to build an eight-metre high phone mast at the corner of Cobham Road and Orchard Close in Fetcham despite being refused planning permission earlier in September.

This was due to a mistake by Mole Valley District Council in its decision notice.

In the notice, the council omitted four critical words making it invalid and leaving the mobile phone company free to build the mast.

Now Vodafone has decided that it will look at other sites following talks with Fetcham residents.

Rape's Vast Toll in Iraq War Remains Largely Ignored

Anna Badkhen, The Christian Science Monitor: "As though recoiling from her own memories, Khalida shrank deeper into her faded armchair with each sentence she told: of how gunmen apparently working for Iraq's Interior Ministry kidnapped her, beat and raped her; of how they discarded her on a Baghdad sidewalk. But her suffering did not end when she fled Iraq and became a refugee in Jordan's capital, Amman. When Khalida's husband learned that she had been raped, he abandoned her and their two young sons."

The Ideology of No Ideology

Norman Solomon, Truthout: "On Monday, hours before Obama's formal announcement of his economic team, USA Today explained that he is forming a Cabinet with 'records that display more pragmatism than ideology.' The ideology of no ideology is nifty. No matter how tilted in favor of powerful interests, it can be a deft way to keep touting policy agendas as common-sense pragmatism - virtuous enough to draw opposition only from ideologues. Meanwhile, the end of ideology among policymakers is about as imminent as the end of history."

Weapons Come Second: Can Obama Take On the Pentagon?

Frida Berrigan, TomDispatch.com: "Even saddled with a two-front, budget-busting war and a collapsing economy, President-elect Barack Obama may be able to accomplish a lot. With a friendly Congress and a relieved world, he could make short work of some of the most egregious overreaches of the Bush White House - from Guantanamo to those presidential signing statements. For all the rolling up of sleeves and 'everything is going to change' exuberance, however, taking on the Pentagon, with its mega-budget and its mega-power, may be the hardest task he faces."

Labor Pained: Labor Secretary Not on Econ Team

Ben Smith, The Politico: "The markets rose on the news of Barack Obama's economic policy team Monday, but some labor spirits fell. Obama's team of treasury secretary and four top economic advisers, introduced as the hands that will steer America's economy, had no particular ties to the labor movement. And Obama's secretary of labor was not introduced as part of that team - a suggestion that that post will retain its second-tier status and quiet voice in matters central to economic policy."

Legal Action You Can Take Against Forced Vaccinations

Petition re UK proposed compulsory vaccination

Takes 10 seconds to do...

You may be aware that the government is considering making vaccination compulsory in order to attend UK schools & to claim child benefit. The link below will take you to a Downing Street petition if you want to re cord your opposition to it. This will only take a minute.

My apologies if you've received this before or if you're not a UK national. I think this is so important that I've sent it to my whole address book.

I am concerned that such a measure does not become law not just because the issue relate to vaccination. It also involves access to the education system and the welfare state being dependent on adherence to certain behaviours and beliefs and would therefore set a deplorable precedent.

A Labour MP has recently suggested forcing all children to be vaccinated otherwise they cannot attend school and parents should not receive child benefits. Vaccinations can cause various injuries to children and also manipulate only specific parts of the immune system and not necessarily all the appropriate parts.

People power as mast company makes U-turn

3:09pm Wednesday 26th November 2008

Residents are celebrating after a U-turn by a mobile phone company which has agreed not to site a mast outside a Halesowen pub.

A representative from 02 told a 60-strong meeting that an alternative site had been found after objections to the mast being erected on a grass verge outside the Maypole pub in Bassnage Road.

The meeting at Lutley Community Centre was told the company was now applying for the 15m tall mast to be positioned in the hedgerow at the nearby junction of Rosemary Road and Lansdowne Road.

If the application is accepted by Dudley Council 02 will plant more trees in the hedgerow to further conceal the mast.

Can Government Keep Spending? Most Economists Say Yes

Jack Chang, McClatchy Newspapers: "Since the US economy went into freefall in September, the federal government has announced hundreds of billions of dollars in bailouts and economic stimulus packages in attempts to shore up banks and reignite the economy."

http://www.truthout.org/112608D

Economic Rescue Could Cost $8.5 Trillion

Jim Puzzanghera, The Los Angeles Times: "With its decision last week to pump an additional $1 trillion into the financial crisis, the government eliminated any doubt that the nation is on a wartime footing in the battle to shore up the economy. The strategy now -- and in the coming Obama administration -- is essentially the win-at-any-cost approach previously adopted only to wage a major war. And that means no hesitation in pledging to spend previously almost unimaginable sums of money and running up federal budget deficits on a scale not seen since World War II."

As Mortgages Went Bad, New Century Executives Cashed Out

William Heisel, The Los Angeles Times: "The subprime lending industry was starting to buckle under the weight of bad loans in November 2006, when executives at Irvine-based New Century Financial Corp. held a conference call to release their latest earnings. Loan volume was down and defaults were up, the earnings report showed, and in recent weeks at least five stock analysts had downgraded the company's shares. Moreover, four executives had sold nearly $20 million in stock in the last four months, six times as much as they had sold over the previous 12 months. Concerns at new mobile phone mast

Published Date: 26 November 2008

By Laura Crothers

A worried mother has voiced her fears about a planned Scarborough mobile phone mast which she claims could pose a health risk.

Mother-of-three Jennifer Adams, 45, raised her concerns after Scarborough Council gave planning permission for a 50ft Vodafone mast at the junction of Stepney Road and Stepney Drive.

Mrs Adams, of Stepney Road, fears that the transmissions given off by the mast may not only prove dangerous to her family but also students at the nearby Scarborough Sixth Form College and the residents of Combe Hay House, the George Edward Smart care home for the elderly.

National Review
by the editors

11/25/08

By speaking of a two-year recovery plan, President-Elect Barack Obama has made it clear that the gathering economic gloom is going to continue gathering for some time. The stretching of time horizons is politically astute: If the economy picks up ahead of schedule, he will have beaten expectations; if not, he will have done what he can to avoid blame. … the policies that command Democratic attention right now are orthodox Keynesian ones: have the government put money into the economy, and give it to those recipients who are most likely to spend it. Which neatly fits Democratic proclivities: They are happy to give federal money to lower-income workers and state and local governments. We are less enthusiastic...

The Bailout, the Media, and the War Party

AntiWar.Com

So here we have the intersection of two very dangerous phenomena, which, in combination, could prove deadly to our democracy and subversive in a way no foreign conspiracy ever could be. All by itself, a love-struck media — which has been in the tank for Obama since the early primaries — wouldn’t be so bad. After all, any half-intelligent Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron can see through the bias, which is often unapologetic, as in Matthews’ case. However, add to this the breaching of the wall between the government and the corporate parents of major media outlets, and you’re entering some very dangerous territory. With the government in control of the commanding heights of the American economy — the financial sector, which, like GE, has its tentacles wrapped around the communications industry — the difference between private and state-controlled media is near abolition. The boundary between media and government has always been rather blurred, at least socially, and now the connection is being cemented with plenty of cash...

The Truth behind the Citigroup Bank "Nationalization"

By F. William Engdahl

The trigger was the bank which only two years ago was America's largest, Citigroup. The size of the US Government de facto nationalization of the $2 trillion banking institution is an indication of shocks yet to come in other major US and perhaps European banks thought to be 'too big to fail.'

Lessons of War and Truth

Nick Turse, TomDispatch.com: "A new president will soon take office, facing hard choices not only about two long-running wars and an ever-deepening economic crisis, but about a government that has long been morally adrift. Torture-as-policy, kidnappings, ghost prisons, domestic surveillance, creeping militarism, illegal war-making, and official lies have been the order of the day. Moments like this call for truth-tellers."

Boston Globe
by Sabin Willett

11/30/08

Earlier this month, US District Judge Richard Leon ruled in the case of six Bosnians held at Guantanamo Bay. So Judge Leon gave him that hearing, and Boumediene won. The judge ruled that he is not an enemy combatant. Boumediene himself was not there. He and the other Bosnians were listening at Guantanamo. When the hearing was over, the MPs switched off the monitor. Then they took Boumediene back to his isolation cell in the solitary confinement prison at Guantanamo’s Camp 6, where he remains today...

In the real world outside the U.S. Naval Base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, Barack Obama’s pledge to close Guantánamo and scrap the military commissions (the system of trials for ‘terror suspects’ that was established in the wake of the 9/11 attacks) has provoked a rare outburst of frenzied media coverage...
