Will Henry Paulson Sink Detroit?

tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com — Henry Paulson's main claim to fame is getting just about everything wrong in his tenure as Treasury secretary. However, he now stands to gain lasting notoriety as the person who destroyed the domestic U.S. auto industry, and the economies of the Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana along with them.

The U.S. has lost private sector jobs for 10 straight months

Robert Borosage, Campaign for America's Future: "Free fall. The U.S. has lost private sector jobs for 10 straight months. One quarter of all businesses in the U.S. plan to cut payroll over the next year. Retail sales fell in October by the largest monthly drop on record. Auto sales have collapsed, driving the auto companies towards the precipice ... 'The era of big government is over' is over. In the crisis, we are, as Richard Nixon once said, 'all Keynesians now.'"

Dina Cappiello, The Associated Press: "Animals and plants in danger of becoming extinct could lose the protection of government experts who make sure that dams, highways and other projects don't pose a threat, under a regulation the Bush administration is set to put in place before President-elect Obama can reverse them. Lawmaker Accuses Bush of Secrecy Over Iraq Deal

Ross Colvin, Reuters: "The US government is refusing to make public the security pact it has signed with Iraq, even though it has already been published in full in an Iraqi newspaper, a congressional hearing was told on Wednesday." In Iraq, "a session of Iraq's Parliament collapsed in chaos on Wednesday, as a discussion among lawmakers about a three-year security agreement with the Americans boiled over into shouting and physical confrontation," according to Campbell Robertson of The New York Times.

Against the Militarized Academy

Henry A. Giroux, Truthout: "While there is an ongoing discussion about what shape the military-industrial complex will take under an Obama presidency, what is often left out of this analysis is the intrusion of the military into higher education. One example of the increasingly intensified and expansive symbiosis between the military-industrial complex and academia was on full display when Robert Gates, the secretary of defense, announced the creation of what he calls a new 'Minerva Consortium,' ironically named after the goddess of wisdom, whose purpose is to fund various universities to 'carry out social-sciences research relevant to national security.'"

Stimmt diese These?

Phone mast will be sited near hospital

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 09:00

PERMISSION has been given for a phone mast to be erected next to a hospital despite it being near another pole belonging to a different company.

Vodafone has been given permission to build the 37ft structure containing three antennae, plus an equipment cabinet on the pavement, in Hilton Road, Hartshill.

It will be sited between two trees and will have a wood effect finish to make it look like a telegraph pole.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council's development control committee heard there is a T-Mobile pole about 50ft away, but sharing was ruled out because it would have meant extending the existing one and making it obtrusive.

Councillor Ian Mitchell said: "3G masts emit high frequency microwaves. This one is just in front of the hospital and new wards are being built there.

Proliferation of masts down to 3G

20 November 2008

OVER the past few weeks letters have been published regarding the number of phone masts proposed to be erected in Redbridge.

Firstly, let me be quite open in the fact that I cannot take the moral high ground on this as I own a mobile phone and realise that in order to use it there has to be a mast in the vicinity.

Financial reversals

Reason
by Jacob Sullum

Remember when Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson warned us that the economy was about to collapse unless Congress immediately authorized him to spend $700 billion on ‘troubled assets’ held by banks? Remember when he said banks would never lend again as long as they remained saddled with these bad investments? You do remember? So it’s not just me. I was beginning to think I had dreamed the whole thing, because a month and a half later the Treasury Department has yet to buy any troubled assets, and last week Paulson said it had no plans to do so. Instead the department is using its $700 billion to buy the banks themselves, which I could almost swear Paulson said was a bad idea a couple of months ago. Evidently the Bush administration is still calling the effort the Troubled Asset Relief Program for the sake of the acronym, which suggests a cover for something unsightly or embarrassing...

I suspect that those in Obama’s circle who are promoting Gates may be the same advisers responsible for Obama’s most naive comment of the recent presidential campaign: that the ’surge’ of US troops into Iraq in 2007-08 ’succeeded beyond our wildest dreams.’ Succeeded? You betcha — the surge was a great success in terms of the administration’s overriding objective. The aim was to stave off definitive defeat in Iraq until President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney could swagger from the West Wing into the western sunset on Jan. 20, 2009...

The audacity of … competence?

The American Prospect
by Ezra Klein

11/19/08

The clear theme of Obama’s transition team, White House staff decisions, and leaked cabinet appointments has been experience. Rahm Emanuel. Tom Daschle. Eric Holder. John Podesta. Hillary Clinton. Jim Messina. Pete Rouse. Phil Chiliro. And on, and on, and on. There’s not much ‘change’ here. Rather, the emphasis is on folks who know how Washington works, with the clear operating theory being that they’ll know how to get things done. That’s a different conception of ‘change’ than presidents who come in and bring a lot of new people, which is what Clinton did (though, to be sure, Clinton didn’t have a successful recent administration he could draw on for talent). But it’s very similar to what Obama did in the primary...

Change we can bank on

The Nation
by Robert Scheer

11/19/08

This is not change we can believe in. Not if Robert Rubin or his protege, Lawrence Summers, get to call the shots on the economy in President-elect Barack Obama’s incoming administration. Both Clinton-era treasury secretaries deserve a great deal of the blame for the radical deregulation of the financial industry that has derailed the world economy. They both should, along with former Federal Reserve chief Alan Greenspan, perform rites of contrition and be kept at a safe distance from the leadership of our nation...

Obama to Keep Gates as Defense Secretary

Mike Allen, The Politico: "Defense Secretary Robert Gates has agreed to stay on under President-elect Barack Obama, according to officials in both parties. Obama plans to announce a national security team early next week that includes Gates at the Pentagon and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-New York) as secretary of state, officials said. Retired Marine General James Jones, former Marine commandant and commander of US and NATO forces in Europe, will be named national security adviser, the officials said."

Custodians of Empire

Tom Engelhardt, The Nation: "The Obama national security 'team' - part of that much-hailed 'team of rivals' - does not yet exist, but it does seem to be heaving into view. And so far, its views seem anything but rivalrous. Mainstream reporters and pundits lovingly refer to them as 'centrist,' but, in a Democratic context, they are distinctly right of center. The next secretary of state looks to be Hillary Clinton, a hawk on the Middle East. During the campaign, she spoke of our ability to 'totally obliterate' Iran, should that country carry out a nuclear strike against Israel. She will evidently be allowed to bring her own (hawkish) subordinates into the State Department with her. Her prospective appointment is now being praised by the likes of Newt Gingrich and Henry Kissinger."

Borneo Orangutans are being wiped out due to capture for black- market pet trade in Indonesia and abroad, as a delicacy meat by diners, by shopkeepers who sell the animals' skulls as souvenirs, and by loggers who are decimating their jungle habitat. These intelligent, gentle, and evolutionary cousins need our help to ensure the survival of their remarkable species, and ultimately our planets survival as well.

Experts: SOFA Faces Legal Uncertainty

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "The Bush administration's push to nail down a bilateral agreement governing the future US presence in Iraq faces serious stumbling blocks. Despite the agreement's near-unanimous passage in the Iraqi cabinet, fueled by deepening pressure from the Bush administration, it faces firm opposition from legal scholars and US Congress members, who say it undermines President-elect Barack Obama's powers and illegally bypasses Congress, and from Iraqi parliamentarians, who are not satisfied with its withdrawal provisions."

Kinder in Hartz-IV-Familien gehen leer aus

19. November 2008

GM Maize Reduces Fertility and Deregulates Genes in Mice

ISIS Press Release 19/11/08

Comprehensive long term studies commissioned by the Austrian government reveal that mice fed GM maize produced fewer and smaller litters with many genes affected compared to controls. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

Austrian scientists carried out long term studies that showed GM maize fed to mice significantly reduced their fertility over three to four breeding cycles within one generation [1]. Similar effects were found in mice fed GM maize and bred over four generations; although the results did not reach statistical significance in any one generation, the trend was unmistakable, more pups lost and smaller litters in the GM-fed mice.

The studies are by far the most meticulous and comprehensive feeding trials to-date, and confirm deleterious reproductive and health impacts obtained by scientists independent of the biotech industry and farmers’ observations in the field. For a recent review, see [2] GM is Dangerous and Futile (SiS 40).

The new research results are a landmark in the safety assessment of GM food. Most feeding trials were short-term and restricted to a single generation or a single breeding cycle. The “multi-generational” study widely cited as evidence of no long term adverse impacts from GM feed is highly misleading as the experiment did not involve trans- generational feeding, but merely breeding mice that were not GM fed for three generations, and carrying out a separate experiment with GM feed for each generation [3] (Letter to Nature Biotechnology: Systematic bias in favour of no adverse impacts from GM feed, SiS 37). There were other serious flaws in that experiment, not least the failure to ascertain by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) that the processed GM feed used actually contained GM soya.

GM Maize Disturbs Immune System of Young and Old Mice

New research add to the weight of damning evidence against the safety of GM food Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

The Italian government’s National Institute of Research on Food and Nutrition has just published a report online in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry documenting significant disturbances in the immune system of young and old mice that have been fed the GM maize MON 810 [1]. This follows hot on the heels of results released by the Austrian government showing that GM Maize Reduces Fertility & Deregulates Genes in Mice (SiS 41) [2]. These revelations confirm a string of previous findings on adverse health impacts of GM food and feed, leave us in little doubt that GM is Dangerous and Futile (SiS 40) [3]. Proponents should stop misleading the public that GM food and feed is safe.

The GM maize and the parental non-GM variety from which it was derived, were grown simultaneously in neighbouring fields in Landriano, Italy, from seeds provided by Seeds Emporda (Girona, Spain). The control maize flour from the non-GM parental strain had a low level of GMO contamination
(0.29 percent by PCR test) but only the GM maize had the specific gene coding for the toxin Cry1Ab that acts as a pesticide.

The GM and non-GM maize were also analysed for levels of the fungal aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, G2, fumonisin B1 (FB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), ochratoxin, and zeralenon, that frequently contaminate maize grains. The values were below the maximum allowed in Europe, except for FB1 (1350 and 2450 mg/kg) and DON (1300 and 650 mg/kg) in GM and non-GM maize respectively.

The diets were formulated according to accepted standards and contained 50 percent MON810 or its parental control maize flour. A standard pellet diet containing about 50 percent of commercial non GM maize was also used, which did not contain CrylAb by PCR test.

Weaning mice, 21 days old, were fed with the diets for 30 and 90 days, and the old mice, 18 to 19 months, were fed for
90 days on the test diets; and male Balb/c mice were used in all the experiments.

There were no differences in the mean body weight or in food consumed between the GM-fed and control mice. These are the ‘agronomic’ characteristics typically measured in feeding tests, and all too often, the only characteristics measured.

Gas prices: The latest excuse to reengineer society

Foundation for Economic Education
by Steven Greenhut

11/18/08

[T]hose of us who understand a few things about free markets aren’t too worried (beyond our normal pocketbook considerations) when we see the trends. As long as the government doesn’t place too many barriers in the way, increasing gas prices will make it economically feasible for oil companies to find new sources of oil or more efficiently tap existing wells. Oil alternatives will spring up. It doesn’t matter if my car is powered by gasoline or chicken droppings. People might be encouraged to adjust their lifestyles somewhat, but I would be shocked if the energy situation causes widespread changes in most Americans’ daily lives. Every ‘crisis,’ however, gives voice to those who believe that current lifestyles are ‘unsustainable’ and must be changed — for the sake of the planet!

Should we worry about deflation?

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Doug French

11/18/08

There is now worldwide worrying about price deflation again. After all, real estate prices have sunk, stock prices have hit the ditch, the price of oil has the sheiks concerned, and even Las Vegas hotel room rates have plunged. Sounds like all good news for those of us who buy things, at the same time being a bit of a bummer for heavily indebted sellers. … Yes, the current economics brain trust is worried that consumers will collectively show the good sense to delay purchases, pay down debt, and increase their savings...

Election Protection in Ohio (and America) Isn't Over

Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman, The Free Press: "The GOP's 2008 electoral strategy again emphasized massive voter disenfranchisement and rigging the electronic vote count. Fears voiced over mobile phone mast

by KEITH BULL

CAMPAIGNERS are questioning the wisdom of placing a mobile phone mast near to a post office and a busy road.

Vodafone is hoping to erect the 12 metre high pole on land at the corner of St Peter's Street and Spring Terrace Road in Stapenhill.

The mast, if given the green light, will be positioned close to Stapenhill Post Office.

A notice signalling the intentions of the communications giant has been placed on the lamppost outside the post office.

Asimah Alam, who is also the daughter of sub-postmaster Nek Alam, told The Mail that the proposed location was 'unacceptable'.

She said: "This area already has issues with air quality due to the busy road and the number of cars that pass here each day.

"We don't need radiation on our doorstep joining with the pollution from cars.

Cheney, Gonzales indicted for prisoner abuse

CNN

11/18/08

Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales have been indicted on separate charges related to alleged prisoner abuse in federal detention centers, Willacy County, Texas, District Attorney Juan Angel Guerra told CNN Tuesday. The indictment stems from Cheney’s investment in the Vanguard Group — an investment management company that reportedly has interests in the prison companies in charge of the detention centers, according to The Associated Press. It also charges Gonzales halted an investigation into abuse at the detention centers while he was attorney general...

Taxpayers Will Pay for Gonzales's Private Attorney

Marisa Taylor, McClatchy Newspapers: "The Justice Department has agreed to pay for a private lawyer to defend former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales against allegations that he encouraged officials to inject partisan politics into the department's hiring and firing practices. Lawyers from the Justice Department's civil division often represent department employees who're sued in connection with their official actions. However, Gonzales' attorney recently revealed in court papers that the Justice Department had approved his request to pay private attorney's fees arising from the federal lawsuit."
