Vote Watchdogs Warn of Troubles on Election Day

Carol J. Williams and Noam N. Levey, The Los Angeles Times: "Counting down to an election day expected to draw a record-shattering turnout, voting-rights watchdogs are sounding the alarm that a repeat of the Florida fiasco of 2000 could occur in any of a dozen battleground states. Lawsuits are already flying in many of these states."

Phone mast ban could be lifted

Oct 31 2008 by Helen Hunt, Liverpool Echo

A BAN on putting mobile phone masts on land owned by a Merseyside council could be lifted.

Sefton council is considering a request to lift a moratorium that prohibits mobile telecommunications equipment on its land and buildings.

The argument is that the current rules lead to masts being put up elsewhere – against the wishes of residents and the council.

Blacks Face Voting Obstacles

guardian.co.uk — While formal poll taxes were declared illegal in 1965 with the passage of the Voting Rights Act, versions of it remain in place — for instance, in the cost of taking time off work, traveling to the polls, or obtaining identification. African American votes are now discounted by many other means, as well. In Florida in 2000, the suppression of black votes changed the final outcome of the presidential election. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights found "widespread disenfranchisement and denial of voting rights" in Florida, which was ten times more likely to affect African Americans.

Undervotes: The Scary Canary

In 2004, voters in key states waited in long lines at the polls only to later discover the voting machines did not record their vote for a presidential candidate. This occurrence is known as an undervoting. This clip from David Earnhardt's documentary film, "Uncounted," focuses on cases of undervoting in the 2004 battleground states of New Mexico and Pennsylvania.

Ohio Provisional Ballots May Prove Pivotal

Ian Urbina, The New York Times: "If the outcome of next week's presidential election is close, this precariously balanced state could be the place where the two parties begin filing the inevitable lawsuits over voting irregularities, experts say.... The most likely source of litigation is the state's heavy use of provisional ballots, which are issued when a voter's identity or registration cannot immediately be verified or when polls stay open late. Ohio has a history of requiring large numbers of voters to use these ballots, which are easy to disqualify and are not counted until after the election."

Sign your life away: The problem with presidential signing statements

Reason
by Damon W. Root

10/29/08

The U.S. Constitution, of course, already provides the president with a crucial check on the legislative branch: It’s called the veto. Nowhere in our founding documents, however, does the president receive the authority to pick and choose which laws he’s going to obey. Thankfully, George W. Bush won’t be president much longer. But the executive powers he helped forge will still be around. Is there any reason to think his successor will be much better? Not really...

The “dictator” label

It has been a favorite trope of the Bush-bashers: The 43d president’s power-lust is so insatiable, his disdain for constitutional checks and balances so complete, that he has fashioned himself into a dictator. … ‘In terms of the power he now claims without significant challenge,’ Michael Kinsley asserted, ‘George W. Bush is now the closest thing in a long time to dictator of the world.’ When it emerged that the National Security Agency was sifting telephone records for possible counterterrorism leads, CNN’s Jack Cafferty fumed that the administration intended to establish ‘a full-blown dictatorship in this country.’ In a recent piece for the Times of London, Andrew Sullivan informs us that ‘in war and economic crisis, Bush has insisted that there is no alternative to dictatorial rule’...

McCain: Not more of the same

Give the Obama campaign this: They have message consistency. John McCain is ‘more of the same.’ He voted with George W. Bush ‘more than 90 percent of the time.’ … Obama campaign allies have taken up the call with a single-mindedness not seen since Republicans discovered the political potency of summer footwear in the 2004 election. In one of the best-received lines at the Democratic Convention in Denver, Bob Casey, Jr. said, ‘John McCain calls himself a maverick, but he votes with George Bush 90 percent of the time. That’s not a maverick. That’s a sidekick.’ … At the same time, the ‘more of the same’ rhetoric has muddied the actual choice facing the electorate...

Bailouts for Millionaires, Not Autoworkers

Paulson Swindle Revealed

thenation.com — The swindle of American taxpayers is proceeding more or less in broad daylight, as the unwitting voters are preoccupied with the national election. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson agreed to invest $125 billion in the nine largest banks, including $10 billion for Goldman Sachs, his old firm. But, if you look more closely at Paulson's transaction, the taxpayers were taken for a ride — a very expensive ride.

Paulson the Bungler

By Mike Whitney

There's more pain to come, but the suffering can be mitigated by sound decision-making and Keynesian policies. That means public work programs, bankruptcy reform, and extensions on unemployment. Nobel prize winner Paul Krugman recommends a stimulus package of $600 billion. That's a good start, but it will take much more than that.

More Than 30,000 Registered Coloradans Barred From Voting

Naomi Zeveloff, The Colorado Independent: "Thousands of Coloradans have been denied the right to vote because of a policy that may violate federal law. Colorado Secretary of State Mike Coffman has authorized county clerks to purge newly registered voters under the so-called 20-day rule. Here, county clerks must send non-forwardable letters to newly registered voters. If the mail bounces back to the clerks, then they must remove the voter applicants' names from the rolls. Voting rights advocates say that the policy violates the 1965 National Voting Rights Act."

Cold War Spy Case Offers Lessons for Today

Marcia Mitchell, Truthout: "New allegations of illegal eavesdropping have put the NSA once again on the political hot seat. This time, for listening in on phone calls made by American military and humanitarian workers. Hardly a surprise, given the agency's history of disregard for the laws that govern who listens to whom and for what purpose. No surprise either that former NSA head Michael Hayden, now director of the CIA, insists that charges of agency lawbreaking are 'ridiculous.'"

Millions of Iraqis at Risk from Contaminated Water, Says Red Cross

Angela Balakrishnan, The Guardian UK: "Improved security has failed to prevent Iraq becoming the scene of one of the world's most critical humanitarian disasters with water supplies and sewage systems putting millions at risk of disease, the Red Cross said today. The statement from the International Committee of the Red Cross said the situation has not improved significantly since March this year when the organization published its report, Iraq: No Let-up in The Humanitarian Crisis."

Sea-Level Rise Threatens Sydney Coast

Marian Wilkinson and Ben Cubby, The Sydney Morning Herald: "Sydney's iconic beaches, coastal houses, commercial property and roads will be threatened by rising sea levels by 2050, while the city's temperature is expected to rise by at least two degrees, a new scientific study, launched by the Premier, Nathan Rees, reveals. The study finds that bushfires are likely to be more intense while rainfall may become more erratic, creating water shortages. But while winter rains decline, intense summer rain in parts of Sydney could increase flash flooding."

Lieberman Likely to Lose His Gavel in Massive Reshuffle Being Discussed

J. Taylor Rushing, The Hill: "Democratic leaders are discussing a major reshuffling of Senate committee chairmanships, according to multiple sources, and the proposed changes include ousting Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) from his coveted chairmanship. Lieberman, a former Democrat who supports Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) for president, is likely to lose his gavel on the Homeland Security Committee he has chaired since January 2007, say the sources who see him being replaced by Sen. Daniel Akaka (Hawaii), the committee's third-ranking Democrat."

"Let's make MONEY"

"Let's make MONEY" folgt dem Weg unseres Geldes, dorthin wo spanische Bauarbeiter, afrikanische Bauern oder indische Arbeiter unser Geld vermehren und selbst bettelarm bleiben. Nach "We feed the world" der neue Film von Erwin Wagenhofer.
