Job Losses Cut Across 41 States

money.cnn.com — The number of states suffering monthly job losses more than doubled in September, with Michigan losing the greatest number of jobs, according to a government report released. Private sector and government jobs fell in 41 states and the District of Columbia last month, the Labor Department said. By comparison, only 18 states reported monthly job losses in August. The widespread job losses are a sign of a recession, said Bob Brusca, an economist at Fact and Opinion Economics in New York. "You expect to see job losses across the board, across the country," Brusca said. The numbers underline the grim condition of the nation's job market.

Job Losses May Fuel Foreclosures

marketwatch.com — If 2008 was a record year for mortgages entering foreclosure, 2009 could look even worse: While home-price declines have been driving foreclosure starts recently, mounting job losses could add another layer of stress on American homeowners, the chief economist of the Mortgage Bankers Association said. A recession appears to be underway, according to the MBA's annual economic forecast, which projects negative economic growth through the middle of next year. The MBA presented its forecast to reporters at its annual convention, being held in San Francisco.

Homeless Numbers 'Alarming'

usatoday.com — More families with children are becoming homeless as they face mounting economic pressures, including mortgage foreclosures, according to a survey of a dozen of the largest cities in the nation. Local authorities say the number of families seeking help has risen in Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, New York, Phoenix, Portland, Seattle and Washington. "Everywhere I go, I hear there is an increase" in the need for housing aid, especially for families, says Philip Mangano, executive director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, which coordinates federal programs. He says the main causes are job losses and foreclosures. Other factors have been higher food and fuel prices hitting families with "no cushion," says Nan Roman of the National Alliance to End Homelessness.

Foreclosure Crisis Falls Hard on Veterans

Malcolm Garcia, The Kansas City Star: "It was always hard for him to make the house payment. James Wilson, a disabled veteran of the Iraq War, knows his monthly mortgage payment of $532 doesn't sound like much. But living on a fixed income with a family to support caused difficulties he had not anticipated."

Mobile mast planned next to school

Published Date: 13 October 2008

A GIANT mobile phone mast is set to go up just yards from a children's playground and across the road from a primary school.

Vodafone has applied for permission to put up the 14-metre (45 ft) mast at Preston Road, Linlithgow.

If approved, the structure would be placed on the roadside verge at the corner of the new playpark, near Linlithgow Primary School and next to the Union Canal.

Linlithgow Community Council is planning to fight the proposal and Jack Thompson, planning spokesman, said: "We are not in favour of masts that are too close to where children will be playing or going to school because of the potential hazards.

"We will be submitting a formal objection on the grounds of location and size."

Collateral Damage: Is Health Care Reform Another Victim of Wall Street's Madness?

Mike Lillis, The Washington Independent: "Health-care reform - an expensive and politically thorny proposition in any environment - could be particularly tough in the face of a plunging economy. Yet to hear the candidates tell it, the next president will usher in an era of sweeping changes. Both Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama are pushing overhauls of the health-care system that purport to save families thousands of dollars while covering millions of the uninsured. Some estimates put the cost of their plans in the trillions of dollars. Neither candidate has said specifically how he would pay the tab."

Ohio GOP Plays Voter Fraud Card

Stephen Majors, The Associated Press: "Voter fraud was a buzz phrase for the Ohio GOP when it pushed voter identification requirements through the state legislature in 2005. It's now a driving factor behind a flurry of GOP lawsuits leveled against Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, seeking either to restrict early voting or mandate how voter information should be checked."

Amy Goodman Interviews Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner

Democracy Now! interview: "Ohio is a key swing state that ended up deciding the outcome of the 2004 election. But the state was riddled with voting problems, ranging from breakdowns in electronic voting machines to accusations of widespread voter disenfranchisement. We speak to Democrat Jennifer Brunner, who was elected secretary of state of Ohio in November 2006."

GOP dirty tricks 2.0

In These Times
by Adam Doster

10/13/08

In June, The Atlantic magazine’s Marc Ambinder reported that some people inside Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) presidential campaign were hoping to soften the GOP’s traditionally aggressive campaign against ‘voter fraud,’ partly because they thought previous efforts had created a backlash in public opinion. But the next day, the campaign’s top lawyer fired back, writing to Ambinder that ‘any impression that we’re not committed to stopping voter fraud is 100 percent false.’ Of course, federal officials have never found evidence of widespread voter fraud. But that hasn’t stopped Republican operatives from exploiting fears of ballot security to build a nationwide campaign of laws, policies and flimsy challenges that ostensibly prevent fraud while actually limiting voting access for the nation’s most marginalized citizens...

McCain calls for “voter fraud” inquiry

Los Angeles Times

10/15/08

Over the last year and a half, paid employees of ACORN, a liberal-leaning community organizing group, have helped 1.3 million mostly young, mostly poor people register to vote, enrolling more new voters overall than any nonpartisan group in the country. Why some applications reportedly were signed by Mickey Mouse and supposed members of the Dallas Cowboys, among others, emerged as the latest campaign controversy Tuesday when John McCain and Barack Obama traded charges on whether the Assn. of Community Organizations for Reform Now has tried to pad election rolls with thousands of suspect voters. … McCain aides first accused ACORN of misdeeds last week. McCain upped the ante Tuesday when he called for an immediate investigation of what he described as ‘voter fraud going on’ in battleground states. He also sought to tie the alleged irregularities directly to his Democratic opponent...

Guantanamo Prosecutor Who Quit Had "Grave Misgivings" About Fairness

Josh Meyer, The Los Angeles Times: "Darrel J. Vandeveld was in despair. The hard-nosed lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, a self-described conformist praised by his superiors for his bravery in Iraq, had lost faith in the Guantanamo Bay war crimes tribunals in which he was a prosecutor. His work was top secret, making it impossible to talk to family or friends. So the devout Catholic -- working away from home -- contacted a priest online. Mobile antenna approved near school for disabled

James Debono

The Education Department has given its blessing to the installation of a mobile phone antenna, just 70 metres away from the Dun Manwel Attard school for the disabled, in Wardija.

The school caters for students with “diverse special needs” and “multi-disabilities”.

Although scientific opinion remains divided on whether mobile phone antennae pose any health risk to residents living next to them, the World Health Organisation (WHO) calls for “special consideration” when antennas are located next to schools.

Amid fears that the antenna poses a health risk to students on Thursday, Wardija residents presented an injunction warrant in the law courts to stop the installation of the antenna.

The Raping of the American Investor

by Joan Veon

The American people have just been severely violated in the name of the 2008 Credit Crisis. In the arena of investing, the concept of “buying and holding” a security has been gold. The idea being that the “market always comes back.” However, the problem is that you have to wait for the market to come back which may take years and you might break even. Last Friday one of the business channels interviewed a financial expert said that buy and hold was best. How......

Baldwin is expected to comment on the latest government bailouts and the accelerating meltdown of the US financial system as well as other issues facing the United States and its citizens. The anxiously anticipated rally will be held at Medford's Ramada Inn Convention Center. Mobile base stations and health

Patrick Pace, Mellieħa

In recent articles, stating that mobile base stations are harmless, the European Commission, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Commission of Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) were all mentioned to be backing this statement.

Then why doesn't someone inform the public and especially the concerned "unlucky people" that happen to live near mobile base stations without any choice, of the latest news? Well the answer is probably because it isn't really good news for those of us, "unlucky people", who have the antennae forced upon us; the news was not "mobile base stations are harmless" but more like "there are reasons for precaution".

The American Empire, RIP

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

10/10/08

Huntington denies that military spending is a drain on the economy, and blames ‘consumerism, not militarism,’ for America’s status as the world’s number one debtor. Yet how does he imagine we financed the biggest military build-up in world history? How did we manage to bloat our military budget until it grew larger than the defense expenditures of all the rest of the world combined? We rang it up on our national credit card. We built an empire on a mountain of debt, and now it’s all come tumbling down. Yet it’s more than an economic debacle: the Greenspan Bubble was made possible by a certain kind of psychology, a cultural ethos that gave little thought to the long-term consequences of US monetary and military policy, and lived only in the here-and-now. The Bubble pumped up not just the stock market, but also our pretensions, our hubris, our sense of entitlement — not only to big overpriced homes and a dozen different credit cards, but also to our global preeminence as world policeman. If pride really does cometh before a fall, then one can only observe that we had plenty of warning...

The real truth concerning how the Earth is ruled

Nolan Chart
by Timothy K. Perry

10/12/08

It truly amazes me when people continue to think in terms of Democrat, Republican or left-wing and right-wing. Why? Both carefully created polarities are financed, controlled and operated by the same oligarchical globalist order which has been patiently constructing and deconstructing nations, states, wars, famines, stock market rises and crashes for quite some centuries now. The modern twentieth and twenty-first century organs of this group are known to anyone who cares to do even the most basic research on the subject...

Abandon all hope

Reason
by David Weigel

10/09/08

On his post-bailout vote show, Lou Dobbs, the jowly arbiter of middle-American anger, called it ’stunning setback for voters who believed the House would stand up for the American people and refuse to be bought out by the Bush administration, political elites, and Wall Street.’ True, he always talks like that. But this time he was actually expressing what voters thought. A Tuesday CNN poll pegged the proportion of Americans who thought the bailout was ‘for Wall Street’ at 53 percent. Only 40 percent thought it was passed to ‘help ordinary taxpayers.’ Obama and McCain are stuck in another trap. They voted for the bailout. They can’t run against it. They went all in, literally, and now they’re stuck selling its merits while frowning and promising that it was the only choice they had...

Crony communist or businessman?

In These Times
by David Sirota

10/10/08

Is Henry Paulson a crony-communist or a businessman? The answer could be the difference between economic disaster and recovery. Understanding Paulson’s role in stopping — or fueling — the credit crisis requires a review of two axioms from Economics 101: 1) A credit crisis occurs when banks stop lending and 2) The amount banks can lend is a multiple of the capital in their vaults. Therefore, ending a credit crisis means prompting new lending — and that means maximally increasing bank capital. … If Paulson pays banks exactly what their mortgages are worth, he will not increase banks’ capital … he will merely convert one asset (mortgages) into another (cash), making no impact on the credit crisis...

Smear campaigning should be beneath McCain

Fox News
by Susan Estrich

10/10/08

William Ayers and voter fraud. Cindy McCain on the attack. Say it ain’t so, John. The economy is in a tailspin, and so is John McCain. Our retirement plans and college savings accounts are shrinking, and McCain is shrinking right with them. He’s not just on the verge of getting clobbered in the election. He’s on the verge of becoming an object of utter ridicule. It isn’t pretty to watch. Even for a Democrat. It’s bad enough that 100 percent of the ads McCain is running are negative. That’s a sign of a campaign in free fall, with nothing affirmative to say and nothing positive to offer; a campaign that can’t win with the support it has now, that needs to find some way to move voters out of the other guy’s camp...

The Moment

John Cory, Truthout: "Senator McCain. Was this the moment? The epiphany? The realization that stoking the flames of bigotry and fear had come home to roost? As I watched your town hall gathering, I wondered what was going through your mind when you came face to face with the incendiary results of your campaign tactics. What did you see and feel when that elderly woman said Obama was an Arab? Or the man who said he feared an Obama presidency? And all the others?"

National Debt Clock runs out of numbers

MSNBC

10/12/08

A watched clock never moves — unless it’s the National Debt Clock. In fact, the digital counter has been moving so much that it recently ran out of digits to display the ballooning figure: $10,150,603,734,720, or roughly $10.2 trillion, as of Saturday afternoon. The clock was put up by the late real estate mogul Seymour Durst in 1989 when the U.S. government’s debt was a mere $2.7 trillion, and was even turned off during the 1990s when the debt decreased...

Global creditors end US spending spree

Washington Times

10/12/08

The crash unfolding on Wall Street is not just the fall of once-mighty banks and corporations that took on too much debt, but the collapse of an American economy and lifestyle that for decades has been purchased with credit cards. The nation’s creditors - many of them foreign countries such as China and Brazil with ample economic needs of their own - reached a point this summer at which they were no longer willing to extend new loans in light of burgeoning default rates...

Ken's heart fears over new phone mast

A heart patient fears a mobile phone mast due to go up just metres from his Lincoln home will harm his health.

Ken Marsh, who wears a pacemaker, says he will continue to fight plans for the mast following a two-year wrangle.

In 2006 he wrote to Lincoln City Council objecting to proposals for the 12-metre high mast in Skellingthorpe Road, Lincoln.

But a "legal loophole" now means that company Vodafone can go ahead.

Mr Marsh (71) fears that emissions from the mast will interfere with his pacemaker or cause other health problems, such as cancer.

"Until someone comes up with some evidence to prove otherwise I will continue to worry that it will upset the settings on my pacemaker," said the retired engineer of Malham Drive, around 25 metres from the mast site.

My Depression - or Ours?

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "Among my somewhat over-the-hill crowd - I'm 64 - there's one thing friends have said to me repeatedly since the stock market started to tumble, the global economic system began to melt down, and Iceland went from bank haven to bankrupt. They say, 'I'm just not looking. I don't want to know.' And they're not referring to the world situation, they're talking about their pension plans, or 401(k)s, or IRAs, or whatever they put their money into, so much of which is melting away in plain sight even as Iceland freezes up.... The point is: Why look? The news is going to be worse than you think, and it's way too late anyway. This is what crosses your mind when the ground under you starts to crumble. Don't look, not yet, not when the life you know, the one you took for granted, is vanishing, and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it."
