McCain Link to Private Group in Iran-Contra Case

Pete Yost, The Associated Press: "John McCain's campaign is criticizing Barack Obama for his ties to a former radical who engaged in violent acts four decades ago, but McCain himself was closely connected to a private group that supplied aid to rebels trying to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua during the Iran-Contra affair. The U.S. Council for World Freedom was part of an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The group was dedicated to stamping out communism around the globe."

Frank Says GOP Housing Attacks Racially Motivated

The Associated Press: "Rep. Barney Frank said Monday that Republican criticism of Democrats over the nation's housing crisis is a veiled attack on the poor that's racially motivated. The Massachusetts Democrat, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said the GOP is appealing to its base by blaming the country's mortgage foreclosure problem on efforts to expand affordable housing through the Community Reinvestment Act."

The Crisis Agenda

The New York Times, Editorial: "As stocks cratered on Monday and lending and borrowing remained frozen, the Bush administration rushed to implement the $700 billion bailout enacted on Friday. The Treasury Department said that it would soon post help-wanted ads on its Web site for asset managers to run the program and that because of the urgency, the hiring may be 'through other than full and open competition.' Is it any wonder that the markets lack confidence? One business day after the bailout was enacted, and it already had a tilting-at-windmills quality."

Congress Grills Lehman Boss Over $500 Million Wages

Agence France-Presse: "US lawmakers Monday grilled the head of Lehman Brothers demanding he justify some 500 million dollars he had earned since 2000, as well as huge bonuses sought for top executives even as the bank failed. Richard Fuld, the chief executive officer of the investment bank which fell prey in September to the credit crunch, was called to account by the House of Representatives oversight committee. The hearings are the start of a series of probes promised by Congress which on Friday passed an unprecedented 700-billion dollar rescue package to shore up Wall Street, amid the country's worst economic crisis since the Great Depression in the 1930s."

Rumsfeld Updated Army's Continuity of Operations Plan before 9/11

By Tom Burghardt

One fact is abundantly clear from the mass of conflicting evidence and assertions made by proponents of various theories surrounding the 9/11 events: AR 500-3 demonstrates that from the very first moments after being installed in office, the Bush regime was involved in a "controlled demolition" of the U.S. Constitution.

Die aktuelle Cross-Border-Leasing(CBL)-Krise

http://www.attac-netzwerk.de/heidenheim/finanzkrise-und-cbl/

--------

Cross-Border: Bochum muss bluten

Anger over phone mast plans

Oct 9 2008 by Dominic Jones, Gwent Gazette

PLANNERS are urging a mobile phone company to reconsider plans to build a mast overlooking a Six Bells school.

Blaenau Gwent Council’s planning committee reluctantly approved the proposal, but members are urging Vodafone to reconsider where the tower will be built.

The committee has been left stuck between a rock and a hard place because members are unhappy with the planned location of the 10-metre tall mast, around 70 metres from Bryngwyn Primary School, but are unable to refuse planning permission on grounds of health concerns due to Government planning guidance.

US govt ramps up the printing press

The Market Oracle
by Keith Fitz-Gerald

10/04/08

This week, I want to answer one of the most frequently asked questions that I’ve received: “Where does all the bailout money come from?” …. To pay for the new $700 billion bailout bill, or even to cover the ever-growing federal debt, the U.S. government sells securities - lots of securities. The money is literally created from thin air by authorization and subsequently lent to institutions, individuals, foreign governments and others for what basically boils down to the mother of all IOUs. A portion of it, of course, is physically printed by Team Bernanke and the U.S. Federal Reserve on its turbocharged printing presses - and put into circulation as currency...

Political blame and the myth of Government-sponsored salvation

Financial Sense
by J. R. Nyquist

10/03/08

Our financial leaders committed egregious error upon error with the haughty self assurance that they could disregard economic teachings and escape the greatest cycle of boom and bust yet seen. And now, this same generation imagines that government can stop the boom from turning bust. They point to the case of Sweden, where the government intervened to save the Swedish economy from ruin. While it is true that the Swedish government stemmed the tide of panic, the country’s economy was ultimately floated by the decentralized decision-making of the market. A government may be lucky enough to stem panic in an otherwise healthy economy. It cannot, however, stop a financial contraction when bubbles begin to burst at the outset of a global recession...

Destroying liberty

George Mason University

There is no question that if one were to ask whether we Americans are moving towards more liberty or more government control over our lives, the answer would unambiguously be the latter — more government control over our lives. We might have reached a point where the trend is irreversible and that is a true tragedy for if liberty is lost in America, it will be lost for all times and all places...

Congress plays Santa Claus without bailout boondoggles

Classically Liberal
by CLS

10/05/08

Congress tends to write legislation that is about a ‘big’ subject and then the D.C. crowd hide other measures into the legislation. So a bill that is about one topic is used to hide laws about entirely different topics, totally unrelated. The secondary topics don’t get any debate at all. Everyone is focusing on the ‘big issue’ so the little issues slip by unnoticed. Democrats do it. Republicans do it. Once against it is the bipartisan effort by the two big parties to screw over the American people. Did you know the bail out bill, while picking you pocket for the benefit of Wall Street is picking your pocket for other special interests as well?

Winter soldiers and Washington’s wars

CounterPunch
by Ron Jacobs

10/06/08

There is an ongoing discussion within the essentially moribund antiwar movement of today and among antiwar veterans themselves regarding the roles vets should play in rebuilding that movement. In a movement whose politics run from libertarian to socialist and beyond, this question can be a contentious one. However, as Stacewicz’s book proves, the role of an antiwar veteran’s organization can be crucial to ending wars, despite (or perhaps because of) a wide variety of political viewpoints within the organization. As the US readies itself for a new president and Congress, the most essential thing for antiwar veterans and their civilian counterparts is to be ready to do whatever is necessary to end the wars Washington is currently engaged in...

Anatomy of a train wreck: Causes of the mortgage meltdown

Heartland Institute
by Stan J. Liebowitz

10/03/08

Why did the mortgage market melt down so badly? Why were there so many defaults when the economy was not particularly weak? Why were the securities based upon these mortgages not considered anywhere as risky as they actually turned out to be? This report oncludes that, in an attempt to increase home ownership, particularly by minorities and the less affl uent, virtually every branch of the government undertook an attack on underwriting standards starting in the early 1990s. Regulators, academic specialists, GSEs, and housing activists universally praised the decline in mortgage-underwriting standards as an ‘innovation’ in mortgage lending. This weakening of underwriting standards succeeded in increasing home ownership and also the price of housing, helping to lead to a housing price bubble...

To drill or not to drill is NOT the question

Christian Science Monitor
by Michelle Moore

10/06/08

Real solutions to the energy and climate crisis are available today if we focus on what we have in abundance instead of arguing over what’s exhaustible and dwindling — namely fossil fuels. Emphasizing efficiency and renewables, in that order, is already working in the building sector, which is demonstrating how we can change for the better by changing the way we think. There are plenty of opportunities to meet energy demand through efficiency. Buildings represent almost 40 percent of US energy consumption and an equivalent percentage of CO2 emissions –- more than automobiles or industry...

Pelosi’s "buy-in"

by Lynn Stuter

America received the news on Sunday, September 28th that the $700 billion package now before Congress at the request of President Bush isn’t a “bail-out,” it’s a “buy-in.” That came straight from the horse’s mouth, Bush’s shill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. It’s now being parroted by other Bush Democrats like Representative Barney Frank (D-MA). So, pray tell, if this is a buy-in and not a bail-out, what are we buying in to? Pelosi says we are buying into our economy, saving businesses and jobs. But is that really true?.......

http://www.newswithviews.com/Stuter/stuter127.htm

--------

Mad About The Bailout? Here's What We're Doing About It

When Congress ultimately completely ignored the almost unilateral voice of the American people AGAINST the bailout for billionaire bankers, it was supposed to restore confidence to the financial markets. It has done exactly the opposite, as the stock market has dropped over 1,000 points SINCE the Senate passed it. Indeed the only substantial up day was the one AFTER the original House rejection.

And in case anyone missed it, according to our Constitution, ALL funding bills must originate in the House. So -- by using preemptive Senate passage to hustle reluctant House members, Nancy Pelosi has once again presided over a further enfeeblement of the chamber she is supposed to be leading, just as she grossly abused her power and defied the Constitution herself in blocking action on impeachment.

Pelosi Must Go.

TV Spot Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/cindy/bankers_bailout.php

She must be defeated in four weeks by Cindy Sheehan who is on the ballot for the 8th congressional district of California in San Francisco, and who is collecting powerful endorsements from sources like the Bay Area Guardian.

Please watch Cindy Sheehan's new TV spot, which with your help can be running in heavy rotation in her district within a day or two.

By arrogantly dismissing our literally millions of phone calls and emails vehemently opposed to this lunatic policy blunder, Congress has demonstrated that they are for the most part beyond redemption. We have only one practical recourse. Vote the cowardly losers out of office as just soon as possible, and replace each and every one of them with strong progressives who WILL be accountable to the people.

We MUST Help Cindy Sheehan defeat Nancy Pelosi

This is our only real chance for the next two years. Nothing would send a stronger message that the voice of the people actually COUNTS for something that a resounding victory for Cindy Sheehan in the Congressional race for the 8th district of California against Nancy Pelosi in just 4 weeks. NOTHING would send a stronger message to the gutless wimps in Congress that their reign of cowardice is over.

What we need is literally a tsunami of donations to put Cindy Sheehan's new TV spot on the air, where she pulls no punches about the abject failure of Pelosi to lead. If you are frustrated, if you are angry, if you can make a donation of any amount, please do so from the page below.

Watch The New TV Spot: http://www.usalone.com/cindy/bankers_bailout.php

And as if all this weren't galling enough. How do you like how Bush came out in the Rose Garden after signing the "Fox In Charge Of The Hen House Bill" to basically say, "Thanks, chumps."?

How dare they call themselves "Representatives"? How dare they! With their phones flooded a hundred to one shouting down this massive theft from the American taxpayer, with such an avalanche of emails coming the House email servers almost crashed, how dare they?! And guess what, the people were right. The hundreds of top economists pleading for sanity and a hearing were right.

Pelosi, the queen of the cave-ins, must be defeated. There can be no honor in allowing her to remain in office. Shame on us if we don't do everything we could have done to remove her. Then and only then can all the other things that need to be done to fix this disaster be implemented.

And please, if you are the San Francisco area. Cindy needs an army of volunteers to hit the streets inspiring voters. And even if you are not, you can help make phone calls. There are volunteer links on the same page with the video. You can do something. You must do something. Please help.

And let election day this time be a bright and shining day where we the people actually start to take back control of our own government.

Paid for by Cindy Sheehan for Congress

Donations to Cindy Sheehan for Congress are not tax-deductible

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Raw Story

10/07/08

Dennis Kucinich opposed the $700 billion Wall Street bailout that went into effect Monday, and now that the stock market continues to fall he’s warning that the attempt to rescue the economy missed its mark. The Ohio Democrat says any government efforts need to focus primarily on putting more money into the pockets of middle- and lower-income Americans struggling to keep their homes and jobs, not to Wall Street institutions. ‘If Wall Street does come back for another bailout, we must be prepared in advance to say NO,’ Kucinich said in a press release Monday. ‘The bailouts of Wall Street must stop. It will never be enough. When the Federal Government gets involved in picking winners and losers on Wall Street, we open up a financial whirlpool of insatiable greed’...

Voting Goes to Court

Tim Jones, The Chicago Tribune: "In a furious, multistate campaign raging far from television cameras and cable TV chatter, scores of lawyers are arguing over the voting rights of perhaps millions of Americans who plan to cast ballots in the presidential election. This is the courtroom campaign beneath the presidential campaign, fought in politically strategic states including Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin and others. The outcome of battles over voter registration, absentee ballots and the integrity of state voting lists could prove to be decisive in states where the margin of victory is expected to be slim."

Global markets in meltdown as London and New York shares plunge to four-year low

London shares had £100bn wiped off their value today in the biggest ever fall as the bank crisis swept around the world. The FTSE-100, which had at one point collapsed by 430 points or nearly 9%, closed 391.1 down at 4,589.2.

Worst-case scenario is approaching rapidly

The credit crisis, which has been building slowly for the past year, is now moving so fast that governments around the world are finding it impossible to keep pace.

Credit doors are closing

A crucial source of financing for companies and banks is making some ominous grinding sounds. The market for commercial paper, which is high-quality, short-term debt, shrank by a record $95 billion last week, to $1.6 trillion, according to the U.S. Federal Reserve. That's down from nearly $2 trillion before the credit crunch.

Chaotic Day Ends With Stocks off 3.8 Percent

Michael M. Grynbaum, The New York Times: "Panic came to Wall Street on Monday morning, but its stay was brief, at least for one day. The Dow Jones industrials finished more than 360 points lower, dropping below the 10,000 mark for the first time in five years, as markets around the world spiraled downward in the face of a banking crisis that has tightened its grip on the global economy."

GM is Dangerous and Futile

ISIS Press Release 06/10/08

We Need Organic Sustainable Food and Energy Systems Now

New genetics research invalidates the science underpinning the $73.5 billon global biotech industry and confirms why genetic modification is futile and dangerous; we must implement organic sustainable food and energy systems now Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

Invited Lecture at Conference on Future of Food: Climate Change, GMOs and Food Security, 1-2 October 2008, India International Centre, New Delhi

I am deeply and doubly honoured to be part of this important conference on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, because it was Vandana Shiva and Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher who inspired me and turned me from an ivory tower academic into a science activist. Consequently, I was thrown out of my university and liberated to join civil society in fighting corrupt science and protecting good independent science.

“Change to gene theory raises new challenges for biotech” The headline appeared in the business section of the International Herald Tribune 3 July 2007 [1]. The article went on to say: “The $73.5 billion global biotech business may soon have to grapple with a discovery that calls into question the scientific principles on which it was founded.”

It was referring to the findings of project ENCODE (Encyclopedia of DNA elements), organised by the US National Human Genome Research Institute. A consortium of 35 research groups went through 1 percent of the human genome with a fine-tooth comb to find out exactly how genes work.

To their surprise, researchers found that the human genome might not be a “tidy collection of independent genes” after all…Instead, genes appear to operate in a complex network, and interact and overlap with one another and with other components in ways not yet fully understood.”

The Human Genome Research Institute said that these findings will challenge scientists “to rethink some long-held views about what genes are and what they do.”

The author of the article Denis Caruso commented that, “the report is likely to have repercussions far beyond the laboratory. The presumption that genes operate independently has been institutionalized since 1976, when the first biotech company was founded. In fact, it is the economic and regulatory foundation on which the entire biotechnology industry is built.” She went on to point out that gene patents and safety assessment based on the same paradigm are also in trouble.

She is right on all counts. I pointed that out 10 years previously when a plethora of findings in molecular genetics had already invalidated the genetic determinist paradigm underpinning the biotech industry. In fact, the paradigm had begun to unravel almost as the industry was starting up twenty years earlier.

Field of Ruins

Mario Roy, La Presse: "This frightening crack in the American financial edifice comes after the failure of its military apparatus, the slow collapse of which insidiously began, one may perhaps consider, in Korea. After the erosion of the United States' scientific and technological hegemony - which, in fact, leaves American students indifferent, while Asian youth gobble up the molecule and the algorithm. And after the great disenchantment with its diplomacy, to the point we see Nicolas Sarkozy's France cheerfully resume the role it has always considered its own since the time of Cardinal de Richelieu! The United States' only intact power today remains its culture. But for how much longer?"

Wall Street Follows the Path of the Steel Industry in Pittsburgh

Dean Baker, Truthout: There is a joke circulating on the Hill these days. 'What is the technical term for a Wall Street investment banker who supports free trade?' The answer, of course, is 'liar.' In spite of the $700 billion bailout package, Wall Street is going the way of the steel industry in Pittsburgh. The financial industry in the United States is hugely bloated and hopelessly uncompetitive in international markets. In this way, it shares similarities to the US steel industry in the late 70s, except Wall Street is much more poorly situated."

Up in arms over mast plans

10:00am Sunday 5th October 2008

By Cadisha Brown

PLANS to erect a mobile phone mast near residential homes will be a detriment to Kidderminster’s street scene, it has been claimed.

Labour Worcestershire county councillor, Nigel Knowles, believes Vodafone’s “hostile” proposal for a 12-metre high mast at the Highway Verge, next to Wolverley Road, is in an inappropriate location.

He is urging residents to object to the plans, as he says it will be placed at a “very busy” road junction and is concerned for people’s health.

“It’s a hostile application,” Mr Knowles said. “There are a lot of people who live in that vicinity. The street scene will be affected.

Government will spy on every call and e-mail

Ministers are considering spending up to £12 billion on a database to monitor and store the internet browsing habits, e-mail and telephone records of everyone in Britain.

GCHQ, the government's eavesdropping centre, has already been given up to £1 billion to finance the first stage of the project.

Hundreds of clandestine probes will be installed to monitor customers live on two of the country's biggest internet and mobile phone providers - thought to be BT and Vodafone. BT has nearly 5m internet customers.

Ministers are braced for a backlash similar to the one caused by their ID cards programme. Dominic Grieve, the shadow home secretary, said: "Any suggestion of the government using existing powers to intercept communications data without public discussion is going to sound extremely sinister."

MI5 currently conducts limited e-mail and website intercepts which are approved under specific warrants by the home secretary.

Further details of the new plan will be unveiled next month in the Queen's speech.

The Home Office stressed no formal decision had been taken but sources said officials had made clear that ministers had agreed "in principle" to the programme.

Officials claim live monitoring is necessary to fight terrorism and crime. However, critics question whether such a vast system can be kept secure. A total of 57 billion text messages were sent in the UK last year - 1,800 every second.

Leiharbeit undercover: Mein heimliches Leben in deutschen Fabriken

Große Koalition will Grundgesetz für "Notfälle" ändern

Tell World Leaders: Urgent Climate Change Action Cannot Wait for a Return to Economic Hyper-Growth

ACTION ALERT UPDATE

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

CLIMATE ALERT! Urgent Climate Change Action

By Ecological Internet's Climate Ark, http://www.climateark.org/ October 5, 2008

TAKE ACTION Climate change and the bad economy are both symptoms of the same growth-based "ecological bubble". Tell governments to urgently address climate change despite the economic downturn, as both Wall Street and Main Street must realize that without ecosystems there can be no economy http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=ecological_bubble

Wall Street's sickness of growth at any cost, and its damage to both the world economy and global ecosystems, is bad news for already faltering efforts to craft a new international climate change treaty. Tighter budgets and worries about jobs will surely be used at upcoming UN talks as excuses by governments hesitant to make the sacrifices necessary to avoid looming abrupt and run-away climate change. Current global economic difficulties must not stop urgent ecological measures -- like dramatic emissions reduction and natural habitat protection and restoration -- necessary to maintain a habitable Earth. The global growth machine is seizing up because it is hitting ecological and economic limits, and because of its own greed.

We must demand world leaders not ignore looming apocalyptic global ecosystem collapse, in a vain effort to return to unsustainable and inequitable economic growth which caused the problems in the first place. This is a last warning, after which all men and women of good conscience and clear minds must commit to escalating "people power" resistance to bring about the necessary changes to ensure a continuation to being and a livable Earth. Tell world government below that climate change is a deadly fact, action cannot be delayed and its solution will help, not harm the economy.

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=ecological_bubble

P.S. After sending the alert please continue to participate in the other numerous and on-going ecological protest campaigns, particularly the FSC campaign which is at a critical juncture.

DISCUSS THIS ALERT: http://www.climateark.org/blog/2008/10/alert_tell_world_leaders_urgen.asp

Bail out vote constitutional?

by Devvy Kidd

It's almost difficult to describe in mere words what happened last week in Washington, DC. That Blitzkrieg is today's definition of shock and awe. When the enemy hits you at a speed you may not have time to get ready for is exactly what the money masters planned when they dropped the bail out swindle into the laps of a body of individuals (Congress), with a few exceptions like Congressman Ron Paul, R-TX, who have virtually no understanding of the subject matter.......

World Government is Not Coming, It's Here!

The remaining piece that needs to be put in place is for the United States to adopt a global regulatory system to merge our banking, insurance, and stock market and commodity industries to that of the other countries of the world. While only a handful of countries like Britain, Canada, Australia, and the Nordic countries have already adopted some type of global regulatory system, it is America’s turn and once America changes, the rest of the countries will follow suit........

Is the bailout constitutional?

Cato Institute
by Robert A. Levy

10/20/08

Realists might say, ‘Save your ivory-tower doubts for the law journals.’ Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson famously wrote, ‘The Constitution is not a suicide pact.’ Douse the flames first; then repair the bad wiring. But a declaration of unconstitutionality, if justified, serves three vital purposes today. It imposes a heavy burden on proponents of the bailout to explain why the Constitution can be violated with impunity. It reinforces the case for abandoning the program once any true emergency has passed. And it helps establish a presumption against adopting similar measures that might be proposed to resolve future ‘emergencies’...

Concerns about radiation from the structures -- in which NextG Networks has mounted antennas to the top of street light and utility poles to improve cell phone reception in dead zones -- are causing residents from Westerleigh to Great Kills to file complaints with city, state and federal agencies.

It likely won't do much to help their cause, however.

The biggest armed robbery in history

Las Vegas Review Journal
by Vin Suprynowicz

10/05/08

Eleven days ago, the entire government of the United States — OK, no one invited the Supreme Court — sat in the White House in front of the gathered cameras and played used car salesman. From Bernanke of the Fed to Paulson of the Treasury; from Harry Reid to Nancy Pelosi; from Chris Dodd to John McCain to Barack Obama to their earnest front man George W. Bush, the government sat there stern-faced and swore in all earnestness that the nation was in an economic crisis — a liquidity crisis (despite the fact the Fed has been printing up and handing free money to the big bankers all year, by the billions.)...

The rebellion that failed

CounterPunch
by David Lindorff

10/04/08

The lesson is clear. No grassroots rebellion that focuses on Congress as its battleground, or that counts Republican or Democratic elected officials as its troops, will go anywhere. The government party will hew to the people with the money. A wiser course of action would be the wholesale rejection this Election Day of all incumbents who voted for the bailout bill in both House and Senate. Do that once, and watch how much better Congress responds to citizen pressure the next time around...

And the market crashed anyway

The Libertarian Enterprise
by Jim Davidson

10/05/08

So, last week, the stock market fell 777 points on news of the failure of Congress to pass the Wall Street Fat Cat Bailout Bill of 2008. Why did the market crash? Pundits claimed because the bill failed. Why did the bill fail? I think because Americans were against it 9 to 1 and contacted their Congress critters. So, this week, the Senate added another $150 billion of sleaze and “incentives” and various kinds of pork, and Congress ate it up. The president signed the bill, and the stock market crashed. Huh?

Who controls your choices?

Liberty For All
by R. Lee Wrights

10/05/08

The only way to abolish the slavery passed onto you by your government is to recognize how you are being exploited and what you can do to bring it to an end. James Bovard said it best in the preface of his 1994 book on government abuse entitled Lost Rights when he wrote, ‘Americans need to remember their constitutional birthright and stand up to arrogant government officials who treat them like subjects rather than citizens’...

Why the big bailout?

Nolan Chart
by Lou Poumakis

10/05/08

This past month has been an eye-opening experience for many Americans. We have seen the beginning and are still very much in the middle of the greatest economic disaster this nation has ever experienced. Many of us still don’t understand how or why this has happened. The simple explanation is that the Federal Reserve (our central bank), led by Alan Greenspan, continuously inflated the currency from the early ‘90’s until 2006, when Ben Bernanke replaced him...

How government stoked the mania

National Center for Policy Analysis
by staff

10/03/08

Many believe that wild greed and market failure led us into this sorry mess. What’s missing is the role politicians and policy makers played in creating artificially high housing prices, and artificially reducing the danger of extremely risky assets, says Russell Roberts, a professor of economics at George Mason University and a scholar at the Mercatus Center...

The bubble boys

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

10/03/08

This is what Ayn Rand — Greenspan’s old mentor — used to call ‘the aristocracy of pull,’ as she put it in one of her fascinating and audaciously self-referential essays. The housing boom — and bust — was made possible by U.S. government-guaranteed loans, given to individuals who failed to meet minimum credit standards. This ‘backed by the faith and credit of the U.S. government’ label created a market that continued to overvalue these ‘assets,’ which were then bundled together into instruments of increasing complexity and sophistication. These ‘derivatives’ and other exotic securities became progressively further and further removed from real market conditions. The Greenspan bubble, pumped up to its limit, continued to expand — and quite naturally popped. Rand used to call him ‘the undertaker,’ because of his dark suits and darker demeanor. Little did she realize that her loyal disciple — Greenspan used to give lectures on ‘The Economics of a Free Society’ at the old Nathaniel Branden Institute — would one day become the undertaker of the U.S. economy...

Time for a second American revolution

WendyMcElroy.Com
by Wendy McElroy

10/01/08

It is October 1st. The mechanism for martial law to be imposed domestically by the American military at the whim of the feds is now in place; that mechanism is loaded and cocked and pointed at your head; it will be fired at the discretion of federal authorities. American soldiers the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team — who have been trained to kill, remember, and are fresh from long duty in Iraq — are ready to aim their weapons at American citizens who disobey and, so, constitute an ‘unruly crowd.’ Vis-a-vis the U.S. military, dissenting Americans will have the same status as the Iraqi population has ‘enjoyed’ for several years now...

Raping the taxpayer for fun and profit

Classically Liberal
by CLS

10/03/08

I fully expect the Bush bail out to become policy. It is bad policy but bad policy and Congress go together like salt and pepper. The politicians have raised their token resistance. Minor changes will be made. Pressure will be put on the holdouts and they will change their votes assuring voters that they held out for the ‘best’ they could hope for...

The fatal conceit of Congress

Independent Institute
by Michael Reksulak

09/30/08

On Monday, the House of Representatives narrowly rejected the ballyhooed ‘Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008′ which would have funneled $700 billion of taxpayer money to bolster the stumbling American financial sector. Figureheads from both major parties immediately vowed commitment to revised bipartisan legislation. However the bill is tweaked to placate feuding Democrats and Republicans, though, its passage is liable to bury years of dirty financial secrets under politicians’ largess at taxpayer expense. Of course, we may have to wait until after the general election to learn just what any adopted bailout entails. The current bill, obligingly, gives all who would support the plan great cover since the Treasury has 45 days to ‘publish program guidelines’ explaining how the distressed assets in this bailout will be priced and valued...

Fear Based Voting: A Nation in Turmoil

by CJ Graham

My email is filled with letters from truly fearful Americans. Never before, have I experienced this level of fear from citizens. It is incredibly disconcerting. Fears expressed are from every possible point of view, all seemingly unrelated. Fears of illegal immigration, shadow government, terrorism, war, failing economy, loss of sovereignty and liberty indicate a distrustfulness of the intentions of our government and I think is well founded..........

A Little Candy For Little Communism

by Dr. Patrick Johnston

I am amazed at the liberty Americans are willing to give up for a little treat. Americans were overwhelmingly against the bailout of Wall Street executives and high-rolling bankers. Investors who took big risks to earn big profits must also bear the losses. According to many experts, the government bailout only postpones the inevitable, making it much more painful and expensive over the long run. It also devalues the dollar through the Federal Reserve’s inflationary printing of money to meet Congress’ deficit demands. Over 400 economists........
