How politics destroy harmony and create conflict

Classically Liberal
by CLS

Notice that when people go to the grocery store they don’t fight. I walk up and down the aisles and pick what I want. It may not be what you want but you don’t care. You aren’t paying my bill and I’m not paying your bill. I can respect your selections and you can respect mine. You might shake your head at some items I buy and I might look down on some of your choice. But neither of us is willing to fight over other people’s choices. In politics the opposite is true. Everything is constant conflict. It is constant conflict because the political means of achieving goals means the use of government power to achieve goals. That means we direct the raw power of government against others to secure what we want. We DO take from people the things they own. We DO impose on will on others. If the grocery store worked like politics it would be a hellish experience. We’d have to lobby for the right to buy the doughnut we like...

McCain’s foreign policy judgment is questionable

Cato Institute
by Ted Galen Carpenter and Malou Innocent

08/20/08

A major theme of John McCain’s campaign is that he has far more experience in foreign affairs than does Barack Obama. McCain has now escalated his attacks by targeting Obama’s judgment as well — especially the latter’s pessimism about the effectiveness of the surge in Iraq. There is little doubt about McCain’s lengthier foreign policy experience. But it is not at all apparent that his judgment is superior to Obama’s. Indeed, the record indicates that McCain’s own judgment is alarmingly bad...

McCain’s warped worldview

The Nation

by Robert Scheer

08/20/08

The world according to John McCain is one in which America is triumphant at home and abroad thanks to the Bush legacy, rolling to victory internationally and mastering its domestic economic problems. If daily news, like reports of the ten French soldiers killed by a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan and the US government’s imminent nationalization of much of the American mortgage-lending industry, would seem to deny such a rosy scenario, then that only shows skeptics lack the courage that sustained McCain as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. There you have it encapsulated, the McCain campaign for President, an irrational mélange of patriotic swagger and blindness to reality that is proving disturbingly successful with uninformed voters...

Barnards Green mast plan is thrown out

9:47am Thursday 21st August 2008

By Robert Hale

CONTROVERSIAL plans to erect a new mobile phone mast in Barnards Green were thrown out by district council planners last night.

Phone company O2 applied to put up the 12.5-metre mast in the Six Ways trading estate, behind Barnards Green Road. An application for a 15-metre mast on the same mast was thrown out in 2006.

Some 30 letters of objection were received from people who live or work around the proposed mast site.

Among their reasons for concern were the height of the proposed mast and its impact on the skyline and views towards the hills. There were also considerable worries about radiation from the mast affecting people's health.

Fund Ecuador to Keep Oil Underground and Rainforests Standing for Our Shared Climate

ACTION ALERT UPDATE

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

FOREST ALERT! Fund Ecuador to Keep Oil Underground and Rainforests Standing for Our Shared Climate

By Rainforest Portal, http://www.rainforestportal.org/ August 20, 2008

TAKE ACTION It is time for the international community led by Europe to step up and finance large-scale Amazon rainforest preservation to protect the Earth's atmosphere, biodiversity, and life- giving ecosystems; while helping meet needs for national advancement http://www.rainforestportal.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=ecuador_oil_underground

The Western Amazon -- home to some of the most biodiverse and intact rainforest left on Earth, which are critical for driving regional and global ecosystems and climatic patterns necessary for life -- may soon be decimated by oil rigs and pipelines. According to a new study in the open-access journal PLoS ONE, over 180 oil and gas "blocks" – areas zoned for exploration and development – now cover the Western Amazon, which includes Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and western Brazil. These oil and gas blocks stretch over 688,000 km2 (170 million acres), a vast area nearly the size of Texas.

Yet there is hope, as Ecuador's new forward-thinking government led by President Rafael Correa announced in June 2007 the innovative Yasuní-ITT Initiative which offers to keep Ecuador's largest untapped oilfields unexploited in exchange for financial compensation from the international community. Regional governments, international donors and global citizens must decide whether every last bit of the Earth's wilderness; and intact, large ecosystems, will be sacrificed to delay having to transition now to renewable energy sources, ensuring abrupt run-away climate change in the process. Given their historical strong rhetoric on the need to protect global climate and biodiversity, please ask European aid agencies to lead the effort.

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.rainforestportal.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=ecuador_oil_underground

Bizarro imperialism

President Bush has long disdained the very idea of setting a timetable for the withdrawal of US troops, but last month had the rug pulled out from under him — and John McCain — when Barack Obama went to Iraq and was greeted by the Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, who promptly endorsed Obama’s call for a definitive timetable. The status of forces agreement has been demoted to the level of a ‘memorandum of understanding,’ so as not to require a vote by the US Congress, nevertheless it cannot avoid a vote in the Iraqi Parliament. That’s what they mean by ‘exporting’ democracy: It’s the Iraqis who do the voting, while we just get to foot the bill. That’s how American imperialism works. We’re the only empire on earth where, as Garet Garrett put it, ‘everything goes out and nothing comes in’...

Is McCain Another George W. Bush?

Jack Cafferty, CNN: "Russia invades Georgia and President Bush goes on vacation. Our president has spent one-third of his entire two terms in office either at Camp David, Maryland, or at Crawford, Texas, on vacation. His time away from the Oval Office included the month leading up to 9/11, when there were signs Osama bin Laden was planning to attack America, and the time Hurricane Katrina destroyed the city of New Orleans. Sen. John McCain takes weekends off and limits his campaign events to one a day. He made an exception for the religious forum on Saturday at Saddleback Church in Southern California. I think he made a big mistake. When he was invited last spring to attend a discussion of the role of faith in his life with Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, at Messiah College in Pennsylvania, McCain didn't bother to show up. Now I know why. It occurs to me that John McCain is as intellectually shallow as our current president."

Bei Hartz IV: Keine Persönlichkeits- und Datenschutzrechte

20. August 2008

Promise of talks on phone mast bid

Protesters angry at proposals for a mobile phone mast near their homes in Telford have won an important victory in their David and Goliath battle with telecoms giant Vodafone.

Council leaders have promised to put pressure on the company to rethink its plans. Objectors fear the mast, planned for a site off Alma Avenue, Malinslee, could pose a health risk to youngsters who use a nearby play area and BMX track.

How Foreign Policy Affects Gas Prices

By Ron Paul

How does foreign policy affect gas prices? One important factor is that oil on the world market has been priced in dollars exclusively since 1973. Only two leaders have gone against this arrangement - Saddam Hussein in 2000 and more recently Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with the recently opened Iranian Oil Bourse which trades in non-dollar currencies. But since oil is otherwise exclusively traded in dollars, this means that oil producers have vast amounts of assets held in dollars.

How Washington's encirclement of Russia threatens us all

The New Cold War Turns Hot

By Antony Black

The flare-up of hostilities in the Caucasus should bring to mind a similar case of the 'guns of August' almost a century ago. Then, a similar flashpoint (in Serbia) signalled the start of WW1. Fortunately, the nightmare conflagration of a WW3 has (hopefully) yet to be similarly ignited - though, truth to tell, it is not for the want of fuel heaped on the geo-political pyre by the global mafia don and its uncritical, cheerleading mass media.

America’s role in the Russo-Georgian war

Boston Globe
by H.D.S. Greenway

08/19/08

In years to come, the short, sharp Russo-Georgian war may be remembered as the nadir of American post-Cold War power and influence - the moment in the closing months of George W. Bush’s hapless administration when all the damage that he has done to America’s position in the world came into focus. The United States encouraged Georgia into thinking it was under American protection, built up and trained its armed forces with a little help from the Israelis, established one of the biggest embassies in the region to make it a center of American influence in the Caucasus, and, despite private warnings, issued public statements of undying support. And now America’s client is wiping blood from its nose. The wreckage of Georgia’s towns and countryside, however, is not as complete as the ruin of Bush’s policies...
