Iraq: New Documents Detail Civilian Deaths Caused by US Forces

The ACLU today released documents from the US Naval Criminal Investigative Services (NCIS) detailing the alleged killing of Iraqi civilians by US Marines. After studying the eight cases, Campaign for Innocent Victims in Conflict (CIVIC) was dismayed that only one resulted in payment to civilians for damages and called for swift compensation to the victims and their families.

Employment Rate Drops as Economy Sheds 62,000

Dean Baker writes for Truthout: "Private sector job gains in the Bush years may fall below 3 million by November. The employment to population ratio (EPOP) fell to 62.4 percent in June, its lowest level in more than three years, as the economy lost another 62,000 jobs in June. This was the sixth consecutive month in which the economy lost jobs. The private sector lost 91,000 jobs in June. With the April and May numbers revised down by 76,000, the job loss in the private sector over the last three months has been 273,000, an average of 91,000 a month. The private sector has now shed 578,000 jobs since employment peaked in November."

This is an interesting article about cell phone antennas, which describes the problems affecting citizens of the United States of America. How a country, which claims to be the guardian of democracy in the world, can allow such un-democratic laws against its citizens, is appalling.

Some very ignorant comments have been left on the web site in response to this article. I encourage you to open the link to the story, contact the newspaper (Marblehead Reporter) and leave a message of support for the writer.

Whistle-Blower Suits Languish at Justice

If we let Bush be the "decider," he'll decide on war

http://www.impeachbush.org/site/R?i=wrn2frnLxpbQtJBnnNhkbA..

A message from Ramsey Clark: If we let Bush be the "decider," he'll decide on war

We will learn from the tragic mistakes of the past, criminal aggressions with tragic human consequences, or President Bush will attack Iran with potentially far more disastrous human consequences.

Ramsey Clark_250 "I ask you to to resolve to join us and do all you can to create a credible and hopefully irresistible demand for the impeachment of President Bush. To make an urgently needed donation to help build the important work of ImpeachBush in the coming year, click on this link." - Ramsey Clark Seymour Hersh, who told us of the Ma Lai Massacre some thirty years ago and scores of criminal acts since, reports in the July 7-14 Issue of the New Yorker, that President Bush has enacted a "major escalation of covert operations against Iran for which he "sought up to four hundred million dollars," designed to destabilize Iran's "religious leadership... focused on undermining Iran's nuclear ambitions and 'regime change.'"

This is conditioning for the missile attacks on Iran's nuclear site, some going back to the days of the Shah, which both Bush and Cheney passionately espouse.

There are four major reasons impelling Bush and Cheney to take this new military action in the waning months of their disastrous terms of office.

1. Oil. To keep control of Iraqi oil with Exxon, Chevron, and other major western oil companies, a major purpose of their invasion of Iraq, now forced on the Iraqi government they created.

2. Permanent U.S. Military Bases in Iraq. With Iran retaliating, the U.S. military presence and large diplomatic/economic mission in Baghdad will be assorted to protect U.S. interests in Iraq, its oil, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Israel.

3. The Presidential Election. The best chance Senator McCain has to win the November elections is a major escalation in the war on terrorism, the terrorist threat becoming the greatest concern of voters in the November elections. Striking against Iran's nuclear sites in September could accomplish this. McCain's grandfather and father, both full Admirals, the first and only father-son to attain that rank, guided McCain to the Naval Academy and military career, backing for Rear Admiral, before political ambition diverted his career track to the rank of Commander-in-Chief. Obama has no military experience.

4. Bush's legacy. Bush is faced with a failed Presidency. He needs for however short a time to appear as the president who prevented a member of the "axis of evil," from obtaining nuclear weapons, as he proclaimed before. His celebration of some agreement with North Korea is designed to avoid recognition of the fact that it acquired and possesses nuclear weapons on his watch - and that leaves Iran alone on the firing line.

The human disaster and effect on the United States may be beyond all we have experienced so far. The way to prevent nuclear arms proliferation is not by threatening and attacking selected nations, but providing leadership and responsibility to carry out the affirmative obligations on existing nuclear powers, according to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This would require the few nations that possess nuclear weapons to systematically and openly destroy them while the many nations that do not possess them to abstain from doing so, accompanied by vigorous international inspections and oversight to assure compliance.

For now, the only sure way to prevent President Bush from attacking Iran is impeachment. He believes he is the 'decider' and has told us his decision. For We, the People, impeachment is our highest for life and the Constitution.

Ramsey Clark

ps. Tens of thousands of people have sent letters demanding impeachment hearings. More than 10,000 have downloaded the flyer and distributed it to their friends and neighbors. This is great work. This aggressive nuclear-armed trio has badgered other nations to back anti-Iranian sanctions without even the flimsiest evidence that Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons.

Bush Is Destroying America

What Bush hath wrought

Boston Globe
by Andrew J. Bacevich

07/01/08

Few Americans, whatever their political persuasion, will mourn George W. Bush’s departure from office. Democrats and Republicans alike are counting the days until the inauguration of a new president will wipe the slate clean. Yet in crucial respects, the Bush era will not end Jan. 20, 2009. The administration’s many failures, especially those related to Iraq, mask a considerable legacy. Among other things, the Bush team has accomplished the following: * Defined the contemporary era as an ‘age of terror’ with an open-ended ‘global war’ as the necessary, indeed the only logical, response; * Promulgated and implemented a doctrine of preventive war, thereby creating a far more permissive rationale for employing armed force; * Affirmed — despite the catastrophe of Sept. 11, 2001 — that the primary role of the Department of Defense is not defense, but power projection …

What the world needs now is love

Liberty For All
by Ed Lewis

07/01/08

These are the opening words (and title) of one of my all time favorite songs. I cannot for the life of me at this moment remember, though, the artist that sang it, or even the decade it was popular. I keep thinking Dusty Springfield although I do not think it is so. But, this I do know — man has not spoken truer words. Is it what we will get under the likes of Bush and all those like Bush, who care not about other human beings and their lives?

Brazil's Xingu River Dam to Damn Amazon Rainforests and Peoples

ACTION ALERT UPDATE
PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

By Rainforest Portal, http://www.rainforestportal.org/ and Water Conserve, http://www.waterconserve.org/ June 30, 2008

The wild and free Xingu River is critical to maintaining intact the Amazon, its peoples and the Earth we share http://www.rainforestportal.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=brazil_xingu

The Brazilian government is planning to build what would be the world's third largest dam on the Xingu River in the Brazilian Amazon. The Xingu River in northeast Brazil is a tributary of the Amazon River. The Belo Monte Dam, meant principally to fuel the expansion of aluminum foundries and other industrial plants in the Amazon, would require diverting nearly the entire flow of the Xingu, drying up the “Big Bend” of the Xingu and its tributary, the Bacajá, home to hundreds of indigenous people. Native people upstream would also be affected by the dam´s impacts on fish stocks, their principal food source. In May, one thousand indigenous people, in addition to social movements and environmentalists gathered in the town of Altamira, on the Xingu River, to protest the plans for Belo Monte and other dams on the Xingu. Please tell Brazil´s President Lula and other decision makers in the Brazilian government that you support the position of indigenous peoples of the rainforest - that Brazil has better ways of providing its future energy needs than destroying the mighty Xingu River and ancient Amazon rainforests.

ACLU: US-EU Data Sharing Can't Happen Without U.S. Legislation

Transatlantischer Datenausverkauf

1. Juli 2008

Democrats are blowing our best chance for clean energy

AlterNet
by Kelpie Wilson

06/30/08

[A] contingent of House Democrats has continued to insist that no renewable energy tax credit extension be passed unless it can be paid for by cutting some other budget item or by adding revenue — like increasing taxes on Big Oil. These ‘pay-go’ rules are supposed to establish Democrats as the anti-deficit party and the House leadership has been unmovable on the principle when it applies to renewable energy. But Democrats seem to have a double standard, turning into bendable Barbies when it comes to bailing out bankers or funding the Iraq war...

The Greater Depression and what you should do about it

Financial Sense
by David Casey

06/27/08

It seems to me a near certainty that we’re about to enter something I have long called ‘The Greater Depression.’ I suspect it will be inflationary (in the direction of what Germany underwent in the early ‘20s, or Zimbabwe today), rather than what the U.S. had in the ‘30s. I should somehow trademark the term ‘Greater Depression,’ except that I’m sure Boobus americanus would then blame me for it. … What should you do? Reduce your standard of living now (while the situation is still under control), greatly increase your savings (in gold, which is real money) and rig for greatly changed patterns of production, consumption, employment and business for a considerable time. The hurricane that’s just starting to hit the economy will both trigger and worsen problems in other areas. Starting with politics, because nearly everyone today believes the ridiculous notion that the government should guide the economy...

Clinton impeachment manager says Bush is worse

Our Future
by Bill Scher

06/30/08

Bob and Isaiah voiced concerns last week over the codification of President Bush’s abuses of executive power, and the erosion of our constitutional system of checks and balances. Bob called for a ‘grand inquest into the powers that he has claimed’ by the House, ‘registering a formal objection to them’ to avoid continued congressional ‘inaction [which] can alter the Constitutional division of powers by establishing the president’s claims as authority that the Congress or the courts may not infringe.’ Isaiah called for last-ditch effort to derail ‘immunity for telecommunication companies that broke the law to bend to Bush administration demands for surveillance activity.’ As I noted, it is difficult to get these issues elevated to prominence with voters when so many are suffering from the ailing economy. But a surprising acknowledgment from a conservative presidential candidate may turn some heads. Not Sen. John McCain. Former Republican congressman and Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr...

Kaczynski will EU-Vertrag stoppen

http://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/kaczynski10.html

--------

Polens Präsident will EU-Reformvertrag nicht unterzeichnen
