Logjam of War Contractor Fraud Suits

Truthout's Matt Renner reports: "A backlog of whistleblower lawsuits against military contractors has been swelling and festering since the early days of the so called war on terror. According to critics, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has blocked the progress of these lawsuits to spare the Bush administration a major political black eye should the truth about ongoing war profiteering be revealed, a charge the DOJ denies."

New Gang of 14 Won't Back McCain

Kristen Coulter and Bob Cusack, of The Hill, report: "At least 14 Republican members of Congress have refused to endorse or publicly support Sen. John McCain for president, and more than a dozen others declined to answer whether they back the Arizona senator. Many of the recalcitrant GOP members declined to detail their reasons for withholding support, but Rep. John Peterson (R-Pa.) expressed major concerns about McCain’s energy policies and Rep. Oil price, who is the culprit? Just blame Bush

The Nation
by Robert Scheer

06/11/08

Sure, in the long run we consumers, particularly the most wasteful ones who happen to reside in the good old USA, and who have become accustomed to consuming many times our population’s worth of the world’s resources, do need to shape up. But that has little to do with the five-fold rise in the price of oil since George Bush became our President. Yep, he did it; Bush’s deliberate roiling of world politics is the key variable in the run-up of oil prices. No President has been more brilliant in destabilizing the politics of oil-producing countries from Venezuela to Russia and on to the key oil lakes of Iraq and Iran...

War and the common good

AntiWar.Com

Communism failed because it broke too many eggs and never made an omelette. The worker’s paradise constituted the total destruction of the worker as individual, the total negation of his dignity, the total trashing of his individual rights. Thus did the whole plan fail, and thank goodness. We are seeing a similar crumbling of American society, a degeneration of civil life and cultural mores, a lowering of moral standards. We are seeing decay and cultural corruption, and while I never badmouth the market, there is a sense in which materialism has threatened to overtake cultural reflection. The greatest traditions in law and individualism itself are under attack...

Fuel protests spread around the world

Hurriyet

06/11/08

Protests over soaring fuel prices erupted in Asia on Tuesday as truckers in Hong Kong and tire-burning demonstrators in India and Nepal added their angry voices to protests that began last month in Europe. As oil hit a record $139 a barrel, large and small businesses that depend on gasoline and diesel said they can no longer cope with pump prices that have doubled or tripled, with the steepest increases coming in recent months. Several hundred trucks and buses were used in a go-slow protest in Hong Kong, snarling traffic in that major Asian economic center. Drivers were demanding reductions in fuel taxes. Tens of thousands of Spanish drivers did go-slow protests on major roads, knotting traffic near cities such as Madrid and Barcelona as Portuguese drivers have joined. France was also one of the countries where protests over the impact of record oil prices happened...

War, Inc.

By Mike Ferner

Smedley Butler learned that in war "nations acquire additional territory if they are victorious. They just take it." With leasing more in vogue than ever, getting the use of additional territory - call it property -can be more profitable than actually acquiring it. But the end result is the same. "This newly acquired territory is promptly exploited by the few," Butler explained, "the self-same few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill."

Kucinich: Impeachment Not "Off the Table"

Christopher Kuttruff, of Truthout: "Last week the House voted 251-166 to refer Kucinich's articles of impeachment to committee - an action that most political analysts view as a desire by the Congressional leadership to bury the resolution. Kucinich, however, promised to keep impeachment from being swept 'off the table' in order to provide a historical record of the Bush administration's policies. The 35 articles of impeachment include charges of violating domestic and international laws against torture, misrepresenting intelligence in the lead-up to the war, illegally spying on American citizens, obstructing justice and governmental oversight, and many other violations."

With gasoline prices headed toward $5 a gallon, more than half the population become marooned in the suburbs

Oil change

The Nation
by Nicholas von Hoffman

06/09/08

With gasoline prices headed toward $5 a gallon, more than half the population has, in a matter of a year, become marooned in the suburbs. The economics of housing combined with the lunacies of city planning have left most Americans stranded, miles away from their places of work, their schools, their stores and medical facilities. The physical plant of the United States for the past sixty years was designed on a premise of cheap energy. This has left much of our population locked into homes and communities they now can ill afford to leave in the morning, come back to at night, heat in the winter or cool in summer. Nor they can sell out and go elsewhere...

Subsidies: a big culprit in high gas prices

Christian Science Monitor

In China, the government caps gas prices. Drivers there pay about half of what Americans pay. In many countries, oil prices are held artificially low, either by fiat or subsidy. The result? Consumption keeps rising, boosting global prices. The rest of the world — the part now racing to conserve — ends up paying more than it should. Unfair? Yes, say global actors such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is calling on governments to let consumers face market prices in order to kick-start conservation and reduce official spending...

Why is America in the same energy predicament it was in the 1970s?

Hawaii Reporter
by Richard Olivastro

06/10/08

With gasoline prices rising every day, Americans are reeling at the pump; as their hard earned dollars are reeled out of their pockets by the newest one-armed bandit: the gas pump. Yes, many feel the ever increasing gas prices are a ‘crime’ of sorts, but more important is the realization that what is happening is not a ‘victimless’ crime. And, however reluctantly, almost everyone necessarily returns to the ‘scene of the crime’ yet again and again...

Senate Republicans block windfall taxes on Big Oil

Pensacola News Journal

06/10/08

Saved by Senate Republicans, big oil companies dodged an attempt Tuesday to slap them with a windfall profits tax and take away billions of dollars in tax breaks in response to the record gasoline prices that have the nation fuming. GOP senators shoved aside the Democratic proposal, arguing that punishing Big Oil won’t do a thing to lower the $4-a-gallon-price of gasoline that is sending economic waves across the country. High prices at the pump are threatening everything from summer vacations to Meals on Wheels deliveries to the elderly...

Anti-War Protesters Banned From Demonstrating Against Bush

Anti-war protesters banned from demonstrating against Bush

London police have announced a ban on anti-war campaigners hoping to protest against President George Bush's visit to Downing Street this Sunday. The Whitehall ban has been immediately condemned as a "totalitarian act" by the playwright Harold Pinter, while Stop the War organisers are urging people to defy it and to demonstrate nearby in Parliament Square.

Iraq Nears Title as World's Most Corrupt

By Joel Brinkley

During the five years the United States has occupied Iraq, the Bush administration has created a new state with a number of notable features: A venal, dysfunctional government. A terrorist haven and training ground. A nation so violent and dangerous that 10 percent of the population has fled.

Purple Hearts for Psychic Scars?

Writing for Time Magazine, Mark Thompson says: "For every soldier killed or physically wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan, some 10 others come home psychically scarred. The Pentagon has diagnosed roughly 40,000 troops with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since 2003, and tens of thousands of others are dealing with it on their own or ultimately will be diagnosed. With the war taking such a heavy psychological toll, some inside the military are starting to ask if men and women who become mentally injured in the service of their country deserve the Purple Heart."

Prices Leap for Corn and Crude Oil

Keith Good, FarmPolicy.com, writes: "The New York Times editorial board stated in today’s paper that, 'Over the past year, the prices of grains and vegetable oils have nearly doubled. Rice has jumped by about half. The causes include soaring energy costs, drought in big agricultural producers, like Australia, and rising demand by a burgeoning middle class in China and India. But misguided mandates and subsidies in the United States and Europe to produce energy from crops are also playing an important role.'"

Abschied durch die Hintertür: „Good bye, Mr. President"

11. Juni 2008

40 Techniques of the Illuminati

By Gianni Hayes, Ph.D

Americans are possessed with ennui and malaise, and worst of all, fears. Perhaps these conditions explain the rash of suicides, the campus murders, the weariness, the failure to act on others’ behalf, the inertia and apathy, and the near lack of humanism. The Inner Circle, the Elitists, the Powers any name you want to call them plan and organize behind closed doors to bring about their global governance, or the New World Order (NWO) or one-world government. To do this, they must push every country to its knees.......
