Armutslöhne in Deutschland: Sächsische Friseure verdienen 3,06 Euro pro Stunde

Iraqi Detainees Languish Uncharged in Crowded Jails

Steve Lannen reports for McClatchy Newspapers: "Barefoot in his yellow jumpsuit, the young detainee's eyes welled up as he described in a shaking voice how he landed in an Iraqi army detention facility on the outskirts of Baghdad. He was visiting his mother in the hospital when Iraqi soldiers raided the hospital and detained him and several others, said Thamer Hamed, 22. They handcuffed and blindfolded him and took him to a holding cell at a former US military base, ironically named Camp Constitution, that's been handed over to the Iraqi army. There, he was told that he was accused of murder. That was 45 days ago, and he still hadn't seen a judge, he said."

Mast proposal rejected yet again

By Sandra Perry

BISHOP'S Stortford residents have won another victory - for the FOURTH time - against a phone mast going up near their homes.

Herts and Essex Observer - Mast protest

Last night, Wednesday April 9, East Herts district councillors went against their officer's advice and threw out O2's plans for the 13m (42ft) column plus two equipment cabinets near the Great Hadham Road-Oriole Way roundabout.

The telecom giant's application was turned down at the development control committee because it would be intrusive and detrimental to the street scene and because of perceived concerns of local residents about the health risks.

Abhörzentrale wäre weiterer Schritt in den Überwachungsstaat

10. April 2008

If we stay our present course, using fossil fuels to feed a growing appetite for energy-intensive lifestyles, we will soon leave the climate of the Holocene, the world of human history. Healing resident fears on phone tower health risks

April 10, 2008

TELSTRA'S national electro magnetic energy manager Mike Wood is adamant there is no health risk from mobile phone towers.

Mr Wood was due to attend a public meeting last night to meet Banora Point residents worried about EME radiation health risks from a planned mobile phone tower on a hill above Pioneer Park, Fraser Drive.

Tweed Shire Council requires Telstra to demonstrate community consultation has occurred as part of its approvals process for the tower application.

Telstra argues the new tower will improve mobile phone and internet coverage in Banora Point.

Banora Point residents led by Kevin Moloney have provided more than 150 letters of objection against the tower and held anti-tower rallies.

Mr Moloney has argued other countries have tightened up restrictions on phone towers due to concern about cancer risks.

He has pointed out that the NSW government aims to restrict the towers near schools.

How to Prevent Vaccine Injury

It is a colossal failure on the part of our government to not warn parents of the actual risks associated with vaccines. The blind insistence that vaccines are safe and effective is not supported by science, at least for a significant number of our children. There are now 25,000 children per year developing autism (1 in 150), a problem that has expanded in direct proportion to the increase in vaccinations. How do you know if your child is at risk?.....

Food Price Rises Threaten Global Security

David Adam, writing for The Guardian UK, reports, "Rising food prices could spark worldwide unrest and threaten political stability, the UN's top humanitarian official warned yesterday after two days of rioting in Egypt over the doubling of prices of basic foods in a year and protests in other parts of the world." And, TIME's Kathie Klarreich reports: "Haitians are no strangers to hunger. But even the resilience of the hemisphere's poorest citizens can be pushed too far, and with world food prices spiking this year due to shrinking harvests, burgeoning demand and skyrocketing fuel prices, it should be little surprise that Haiti is once again erupting in angry violence."

Residents celebrate phone-mast victory

10:54 - 09 April 2008

VIGILANT residents are celebrating after winning the first local victory against a phone mast firm.

Their diligence paid off when it came to persuading the planning inspector to dismiss the Orange phone company's appeal for an eight-foot mast in Gurney Court Road at its junction with Sandpit Lane in St Albans.

The residents had used the fact that the Y-junction was an accident blackspot and was used by the police for mobile speed cameras and a hard-standing had been put there for that purpose.

Campaigner Richard Morgan of Gurney Court Road said: "Once we informed the police of the mast plan they wrote to the inspector objecting on the grounds that a mast and its cabinet would obscure the sightlines they needed for their cameras.

"This was what won the day for us but unfortunately Orange won't go away. They are likely to come back and try again close by."

However, ward councillors and residents say they want the plans to be thrown out.

Conservative Coun Jeff Milburn said: "It's ridiculous putting it in the location they want. This site is entirely inappropriate.

The Global Financial Crisis: Deceit, Deception and Distortion

by Joan Veon

What we have to understand is that in order to integrate the world economically, all that remains are the structural changes: from national accounting rules to global accounting rules, from national clearing and settlement to a global system of clearing and settlement; from national regulatory laws to a global system of regulatory laws; and to bring the U.S. into a 21st century global regulatory system by tearing down the current system and globalizing all our financial and securities laws. In other words, the very last vestiges of our economic sovereignty are being changed before our very eyes because of trumped up credit crisis........

Petraeus, tell us something we don’t already know

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

04/08/08

General David Petraeus’ testimony Tuesday and Wednesday of this week will be another chapter in U.S. foreign policy’s long-running ‘is the surge working?’ debate. The General and Ambassador Ryan Crocker will offer up some good news counterpoints to the not-so-good news out of Basra from the last weekend of March. But in the ways that matter, there’s no need to debate in the present tense — the surge isn’t working, it’s already worked, and the question is what the Democrats plan to do about it. To evaluate the surge, you have to consider its goals...

If government limits speech, our freedom evaporates

It is easy these days to look at TV programming and feel the urge to clean house. Crime shows lay out the most grisly of acts committed by real or imaginary violent criminals. Reality shows peer into the most embarrassingly personal details (again, real or imaginary) of the lives of would-be or former celebrities. But when the government decides it should do the cleaning in the name of public decency, everyone should be concerned about where we are headed as a nation. This fall, the U.S. Supreme Court will take up the case of the Federal Communications Commission vs. Fox Television Stations, in which the agency fined Fox over ‘fleeting’ use of profanities on live awards shows aired in 2002 and 2003. … For the record, the profanities were variations on the ‘f-word’ and ’s…,’ uttered by Bono, Nicole Richie and Cher, words this newspaper chooses not to spell out — the operative word for purposes of this editorial being ‘chooses’...

TAKE ACTION Australia's new "climate friendly" government preaches global forest protection for climate benefits internationally, while continuing to industrially clear its own native primary forests in Tasmania and elsewhere, and this unseemly hypocrisy must end

http://www.climateark.org/alerts/send.asp?id=australia_tasmania_climate

Australia continues to industrially clear their last native ancient forests, even as their government promotes forest protection internationally to combat climate change. Australia's new government led by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has ratified Kyoto, appears genuinely committed to global climate change policy, and speaks often of how Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the world must protect primary forests to solve global climate change. Yet in an act of unseemly doublespeak, the country that is perhaps most impacted by climate change continues to log its last centuries old trees found in ancient forest ecosystems vital for holding both carbon and water. Why is forest protection a good idea internationally but not for Australia's much reduced and climate impacted natural habitats? Australia's new government must be called upon to stop their hypocrisy and end logging of their own old growth forests as a keystone response to climate change, biodiversity loss and ecosystem sustainability.

TAKE ACTION Gunns of Australia's controversial plans to build a huge pulp mill to make disposable consumer items largely from clearfelling ancients forests is close to failing, let us together make a final decisive push to warn off potential investors and environmental approvals and achieve its permanent withdrawal

http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=australia_tasmania_climate

Plans by Australian woodchip giant Gunns Ltd., to continue clearcutting of Tasmania's ancient forests to feed a massive new paper pulp mill, appear to be near final collapse. Gunns is scrambling to raise the cash needed to build the AU$2 billion pulp mill and to meet a looming federal government environmental approval deadline. Chief executive of Leighton Holdings, the proposed builder of the mill, has even stated the project is dead. Join us in supporting massive local protests, and calling upon Australia's Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett to not extend the environmental approval process, and for the several European pulp interests to steer clear of funding the project or risk years of protest and conflict. Let's join together with local protests and ensure the Gunns pulp mill proposal is permanently withdrawn from consideration.

The formula for a police state

Having a double standard that favors police is the formula for a police state. Whether in investigations, arrests, trials, or punishment, police should never get away with anything for which a member of the public would face severe consequences. A police state is at our doorstep when the public fears the government and law enforcers enjoy impunity for negligent or malicious behavior. Freedom and justice are empty promises without equality under the law, including for the lawmen...
