Residents angry with phone mast plan

By Carolyn Robertson

Residents opposed to a mobile phone mast in the middle of their neighbourhood are calling for support to launch a campaign against it.

They were enraged when members of Mid Sussex District Council's central area planning committee gave approval for a mast to be put next to the railway embankment and bridge in Balcombe Road, Haywards Heath.

The 10-metre telegraph-style mast with an equipment cabinet at its base will be operated by Orange PCS Ltd. The equipment will replace an existing site at Central Sussex College, on a building that is due to be demolished.

Councillors received 20 letters and two petitions signed by 22 people objecting to the mast because of health fears as well as visual impact and affect on property prices.

Rejecting national ID

The American Spectator
by Jim Harper

02/07/08

With so many states on record opposing REAL ID, the feds have been shifting through numerous stories trying to justify their national ID. First, they said it was a national security tool. But by now everyone realizes how easy it would be for criminal organizations and terrorists to avoid or defeat a national ID system. Then REAL ID became a way to control illegal immigration. But it has the same defects here too. Illegal immigrants will use a mix of forgery, fraud, and corruption at any motor vehicles bureau in the country to get around REAL ID. Driving illegal immigrants further into criminality deepens the problem rather than fixing it. And should law-abiding American citizens really have to carry a national ID to get at illegal immigrants? Just who is the criminal here? Next, we were told that having a national ID was about identity fraud. But putting our personal information, Social Security Numbers, and basic identity documents like birth certificates into a nationwide string of government databases is a recipe for more identity theft, not less...

Government mortgage bailout could make problem worse

International Society for Individual Liberty
by Jarret Wollstein

02/06/08

[I]f the mortgage meltdown continues, we could see many bank and business failures … hundreds of thousands of families out on the streets … and a major recession in 2008. In the wake of all of this calamitous news, it isn’t surprising that the government has taken action. Specifically, President Bush has called for a ‘voluntary’ 5-year freeze on low introductory mortgage rates for families now making payments but unable to afford higher rates. Only primary home owners would qualify, and they must have a perfect record of home payments. Once such a measure is introduced, it would likely expand. Indeed, others are already proposing a permanent, mandatory freeze in rates. While the desire to ‘do something,’ about the mortgage crisis is natural, a mortgage rate freeze is unlikely to do more than prolong the grief and could well turn what would have been a short recession into a protracted depression...

Senate Republicans block “stimulus” bill

The fate of $600-$1,200 rebate checks for more than 100 million Americans is in limbo after Senate Republicans blocked a bid by Democrats to add $44 billion in help for the elderly, disabled veterans, the unemployed and businesses to the House-passed economic aid package. GOP senators banded together Wednesday to thwart the $205 billion plan, leaving Democrats with a difficult choice either to quickly accept a House bill they have said is inadequate or risk being blamed for delaying a measure designed as a swift shot in the arm for the lagging economy...

Bush: US “may” torture again

BBC News [UK]

02/06/08

US President George Bush might consider authorising the controversial interrogation method of waterboarding in future, the White House has said. Belief that an attack was imminent and legal advice would be major factors in the decision, his spokesman said. On Tuesday the CIA admitted for the first time that it had used the method, which simulates drowning and has been condemned as torture by rights groups. … White House spokesman Tony Fratto maintained that the practice — which the CIA said it had carried out on three high-profile al-Qaeda detainees — was legal...

The cable-cutter mystery

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

02/08/08

I was skeptical, at first, of speculation over the cutting of two cables linking the Middle East with the Internet, which had it as part of some Vast Neocon Conspiracy to isolate the region prior to a US military assault. However, when two more cables — this time, in the Persian Gulf — were mysteriously cut, I began to wonder …. In a piece headlined ‘Cable cutter nutters chase conspiracy theories,’ The Register goes out of its way to laugh off the prospect that what we are witnessing is a military operation, or the prelude to one, sniffing ‘there’s little more than suspicions to work with’ since we’ve yet to reach the damaged cables. Yet, given the sort of government we are dealing with — a regime that lied us into one war, and is not-so-subtly trying to finagle us into yet another one — why shouldn’t we be suspicious? We’d have to be crazy not to be...

A Pre-election Attack on Iran Remains a Possibility

By Leon Hadar

President Bush still believes the Iranians are developing nuclear weapons - and so do the Israelis. So for journalists to assume that neither the U.S. nor Israel will attack Iran before the November election could constitute another failure of imagination. Cato's Leon Hadar suggests questions the press should ask the presidential candidates about what they think the American response should be to various scenarios in the region - including a Gulf-of-Tonkin-like alleged provocation.

Iran General Staff fear U.S. attack while Bush in power

"While Bush is in power, that is throughout 2008, U.S. military action against the Islamic Republic is still likely," Gholamali Rashid said.

The Machine Gun of Capitalism

By Mark Morford, SF Gate Columnist

A flurry of pink slips fluttered over the job sector as corporate payrolls were sliced like sour pie. Foreclosures are skyrocketing and new home sales across the nation are plummeting faster than Britney Spears' serotonin levels. A nasty recession is either creeping or flooding in, depending on your perspective and how recently you purchased your home and/or tried to dump your Google stock.

America's Serious Problems Require Real Solutions

For Truthout, Dr. Wilmer J. Leon III writes: "On January 28, 2008, President Bush gave his final State of the Union Address in which he was long on articulating issues and problems facing America but short on real solutions. He talked about difficult decisions between peace and war, keeping America competitive in the global economy, providing healthcare for all Americans and the overall welfare of American citizens. Unfortunately, very little, if anything that the President has done or proposed has made the average American safer, more competitive, or improved their long term health and financial well being."

Bessere Arbeitsmarktpolitik statt Repressionen und Schikane gegen Erwerbslose

6. Februar 2008

The imminent threat of NAIS to our life and livelihood

National Animal Identification System: Update

by Doreen Hannes

To help get all animals (and your real estate) into the program, the USDA will be focusing on having all the breed registries roll their identification into NAIS beginning in March of 2008. I have checked out the American Dairy Goat Association site and on the USDA link it will show a beautiful placement of AIN USAXXXXXXXXXXXX (it is indeed 15 characters) for your registered dairy goats. Also of note, membership numbers are conveniently seven digit numbers. I guess it's a good thing all of my registered goats died in a horrible barn fire........

Most People Don't Want to Hear the Truth

by Doreen Hannes

Finally there are people who don't want to look at the elephant even though it's standing on their foot. We all have plenty of these people in our lives. When told about something like the NAIS with all of its effects on choice for consumers, loss of rural jobs and businesses, privacy issues, consolidation of agriculture and effects on property rights, they say things like "I want to be sure my burger is free from terrorism." These people will trade your real liberty for their false sense of security in a heartbeat. They think they get the truth from the evening news, believe that you can't understand issues without a doctorate, and that the government gives us rights. They are absolutely sure there are no absolutes.........

Is the Afghan War really good?

America’s Gulag and the good war

CounterPunch
by Chris Floyd

02/05/08

The long-running ‘progressive’ stance on America’s 21st century imperial adventures can be reduced to this simple dichotomy: Afghan war good, Iraq war bad. And for all progressives who want to be regarded as ’serious,’ the Iraq war is bad because it has distracted us from the real war, the good war, in Afghanistan. This theme has been sounded over and over by the ‘progressive’ candidates throughout the presidential campaign. It is the opinion of a sizable majority of the U.S. population, which has clearly repudiated the Iraq war but still supports the Afghan war...

The 2007 US economic slowdown

The Free Liberal
by Fred E. Foldvary

02/05/08

High rentals and purchase prices for commercial real estate increases costs for enterprise, which reduces its profits, and thus results in less economic investment. In a global economy, many enterprises cannot raise prices by as much as the increase in costs. Furthermore, even though the Fed has lowered short-term interest rates, the huge mortgage loan losses has drained banks of loanable funds, and borrowing has become riskier, which reduces credit availability. All these elements point to a crumbling of the commercial real estate market in 2008. Even in the booming Manhattan real estate market, the rise in office rentals has slowed, and the credit contraction has made it more difficult to obtain loans for purchasing condominium offices. Apartment rentals have risen as folks who now can’t buy a house are renting instead. But as unemployment rises, then those laid off will move to more crowded and less expensive dwellings, vacancies will rise, and the price of apartment buildings will fall. Less business will also result in less hotel use. Lower sales volumes will reduce rentals and prices for shopping centers...

Bush vows to veto surveillance legislation

President Bush will veto terrorist surveillance legislation pushed by Senate Democrats that doesn’t give retroactive legal protections to telecommunication providers who let the government spy on e-mails and phone calls involving people in the U.S., officials said Tuesday. The veto threat, detailed in a 12-page letter from Attorney General Michael Mukasey and National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell, was sent to the Senate as lawmakers grapple with how to update a 1978 surveillance law without violating privacy rights...

Racial harassment cases rise sharply
