Dr. King's Prophetic Call to Conscience and Action Today

By Marian Wright Edelman

With the economy slipping into recession and more than 160,000 American fighting men and women in Iraq combat zones and no end to the war in sight, these are trying times for our nation. Unemployment, underemployment and poverty are afflicting more and more American families who face rising costs for food, health care, gas, heating oil and other expenses.

A Stimulus to What? Delusions Prevail in Washington

By Paul Craig Roberts

US job growth in the 21st century has been confined to low-pay domestic services. During 2007, waitresses and bartenders, health care and social assistance, and wholesale and retail trade, transportation and utilities accounted for 91% of new private sector jobs.

Desperately Seeking Stimulus

Dean Baker, writing for Truthout, says: "Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is known primarily for his year and a half of cheerleading President Bush's economic record. That is why his sudden cry last week that the economy is in 'desperate' need of stimulus from the government is so striking. This is a bit like the pope saying that God does not exist."

Is This The Big One? Day of reckoning in the US glasshouse

By Mike Whitney

On Monday, fears of a US recession spilled over into Asian markets sending stocks tumbling. Indexes were hammered across the board in what turned out to be the worst day of trading since 2001.

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article19126.htm

Stock markets plunge worldwide

Britain's benchmark FTSE-100 slumped 5.5 percent to 5,578.20, France's CAC-40 Index tumbled 6.8 percent to 4,744.15, and Germany's blue-chip DAX 30 plunged 7.2 percent to 6,790.19.

Analysts with Shenyin & Wanguo Securities warned that investors should take every caution against the latest correction, which had just begun, and that risks would overweigh opportunities in the near future.

US recession fears wipe £57bn from London shares

London's FTSE 100 fell to an 18-month low as markets took a dim view of President Bush's plan to fight off a US downturn.

Corporate Default Risk Soars to Record on Ambac Ratings Cut

The risk of European companies defaulting soared to a record on concern credit ratings cuts at bond insurers Ambac Financial Group Inc. and MBIA Inc. may trigger forced asset sales and worsen credit market turmoil.

Day of reckoning in the US glasshouse

There is a growing consensus: America is going into a marked slowdown, if not a downright recession. There will be a large gap between potential growth - usually estimated at 3 per cent to 4 per cent - and actual growth, meaning lost output of hundreds of billions of dollars. America actually faces three separate but related problems; a credit crunch, a debt crisis and a macro-economic problem.

»Hartz-IV-Tribunal« - "Marginalisierte - gestern und heute!"

Sechs Monate ALG II.

16.01.2008 http://www.jungewelt.de/2008/01-16/054.php

Hillary Clinton’s massive conflict of interest

Fox News
by Dick Morris & Eileen McGann

01/19/08

As American banks go hat in hand to foreign financial institutions and governments, begging for capital to help them get out of the mess into which their subprime loans have landed them, the question arises as to whether the United States should permit nations like China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the banks they control to acquire part ownership of our leading banks. The presidential candidates discussed this issue in their Nevada debate and Hillary was asked about it in an interview with Neil Cavuto on the FOX Business Network yesterday. She replied that she would not ’stand in the way’ of such investments, but said that they needed to be vetted and called for more disclosure and ‘transparency.’ The fact is that Hillary Clinton is totally unable to be objective on this key question of our national financial sovereignty because she and her husband have been so compromised by their financial dealings with the very countries at issue in the decision...

Theocracy on the installment plan

Classically Liberal
by CLS

01/19/08

If there is any question as to how dangerous Hillbilly Huckabee is he has put those questions to rest. He is dangerous — Constitutionally lethal. Huckabee gave an interview on how he plans to impose his antiquated theology on the country. His goal is to impose theocracy. He wants Constitutional amendments to bring the Constitution into line with his fundamentalist authoritarianism. In particular he wishes to ban abortion and to nationalize marriage. At the same time Huckabee is demanding that Biblical mandates be imposed on the entire country by force he shows he has little understanding of the Bible itself — typical fundamentalist...

McMilitarism: McCain and the militarist mentality

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

01/21/08

Amid all the media-generated hype surrounding John McCain’s narrow victory in the South Carolina primary – which portrays him rising, phoenix-like, from the ashes of what many considered a failed last hurrah — one anomaly stands out: he did well among antiwar voters. This seems counterintuitive, at first, especially when one considers that McCain is the candidate of the so-called ’surge’ and has always been among the biggest warmongers on the block — not only when it comes to Iraq, but even regarding interventions that Republicans opposed, such as in Kosovo. In that case, you’ll recall, he urged the Clinton administration to launch a land invasion of the former Yugoslavia: just Google McCain and ‘boots on the ground,’ and you’ll come up with the one underlying consistent theme of McCain’s life as a public figure — he always takes the most belligerent foreign policy stance imaginable, no matter what the context...

Subject or citizen?

Liberty For All
by R. Lee Wrights

01/20/08

Republicans and Democrats are quite clever at disguising the practice of controlling your choices, so it is fitting to spend some time exploring just how limited your choices really are. The only way to abolish the slavery passed onto you by the State is to recognize how you are being exploited; and, what you can do to bring it to an end. James Bovard said it best in the preface of his 1994 book on governmental abuse entitled Lost Rights when he wrote, ‘Americans need to remember their constitutional birthright and stand up to arrogant government officials who treat them like subjects rather than citizens’...

States combat global warming

USA Today

With proposals to cap greenhouse gas emissions stalled in Congress, more than half the states are moving aggressively to combat the pollution that causes global warming. This year, eight states are slated to release plans to slash emissions of the heat-trapping gases and at least several are likely to recommend specific reduction targets, say state officials and the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. It was fitting that one of my scheduled days to feed homeless Veterans fell on December 7th. Little was said in the papers about Pearl Harbor but those gathered at Mills Park remembered. Veterans of many conflicts who courageously protected our freedom were trying to get out of the fierce wind and warm their insides with my usual Sunday crock-pot meal or a cup of soup that Commander Canyon of the American Legion High Desert Post 56 offered to the homeless Vets... Al Jazeera Cameraman Freed From Guantanamo After Six Years

The Associated Press: "An Al-Jazeera cameraman was released from US custody at Guantanamo Bay and returned home to Sudan early Friday after six years of imprisonment that drew worldwide protests. Reflection on Sami al-Haj

Common Dreams
by Susan Crane

05/28/08

On May 27th, with 34 others, I face trial for attempting to bring to public scrutiny the issues of indefinite detention and torture and the lack of Geneva Convention protections and of habeas corpus for the prisoners. Some of us have decided to be silent during the trial and not offer any defense — a gesture of solidarity with the Guantanamo prisoners, like Sami, who are not allowed to defend themselves in court, who are not permitted to see the evidence against them and are convicted before the ‘trial’ begins. Clive Stafford Smith, who represented Sami al-Haj and worked hard for his release, was not allowed to attend hearings concerning Sami. It will be a challenge to sit silently in a courtroom, knowing that truth matters little. It will be hard because we know that, despite the rhetoric, we are seen as guilty because we were arrested — regardless of what we did or didn’t do, just as the Guantanamo men are seen as guilty regardless of what they did or didn’t do...

It Was The Hope Of The World

By Mark A. Goldman

Their handiwork has left behind a multitude of dead bodies, still uncounted. The murdered, the dispossessed, the mind-damaged, and the broken-bodied suffering souls remind us that something evil has been going on in our name that we don't understand, something that by official decree we are forbidden to understand.

A Time to Break Silence

By Rev. Martin Luther King

By 1967, King had become the country's most prominent opponent of the Vietnam War, and a staunch critic of overall U.S. foreign policy, which he deemed militaristic. In his "Beyond Vietnam" speech delivered at New York's Riverside Church on April 4, 1967 -- a year to the day before he was murdered -- King called the United States "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today."

War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning

By Christopher Hedges

Hedges discusses how human beings are conditioned to embrace what he calls "the myth of war" -- the idea that combat is noble, selfless, and glorious. - Hedges reveals the reality of war, which he knows firsthand, to be the destruction of culture, the perversion of human desire, and the embrace, ultimately, of death over life.

Everyone Is Yelling For Peace

By Monica Benderman

To a young man or woman who grew up believing they would never have a way out of the poverty that was their childhood reality, the military offers every dream come true. With no assurance that their life was going to matter anyway, it is not a stretch to understand why they are willing to sign it away for a chance at the success they were certain to only dream about before the military offered its collateral.

There Is No "War on Terror"

By Edward S. Herman and David Peterson

One of the most telling signs of the political naiveté of liberals and the Left in the United States has been their steadfast faith in much of the worldview that blankets the imperial state they call home. Nowhere has this critical failure been more evident than in their acceptance of the premise that there really is something called a "war on terror" or "terrorism".

Emergency Paper Ballot Bill If You Will Speak Out Now

The election season is just getting started, and already the recount in New Hamphire, where they DO have paper ballots, has exposed missing memory cards and other machine related breakdowns. As if we did not have enough proof already, we simply cannot trust our sacred right to vote in this critical upcoming election to secret proprietary machines owned by radically partisan private corporations.

For this reason there is renewed urgency to assist any jurisdiction that has had it with those infernal problematic machines, and wants to switch back to tried, true and AUDITABLE paper ballots. Rush Holt has introduced a stop gap bill, and once again, John Laesch, candidate for the old Hastert seat in IL-14 is demonstrating his own leadership on this issue.

Emergency Paper Ballot Action Page: http://usalone.com/laesch/pnum779.php (anyone can use this link)

Facebook Version: http://apps.facebook.com/fb_voices/action.php?qnum=pnum779 (to use this you must be a member of Facebook and logged in)

John Laesch is running in a special primary election coming up in just 2 weeks on Feb 5th, that can help set the tone for the entire primary season to come. Please submit the action page sponsored by John above, and please also consider making a donation to encourage him to keep standing strong on the issues you care about.

John Laesch Donations: http://www.usalone.com/donations_laesch.php

As the Democratic nominee in 2006, John Laesch pulled 40 percent against the powerful incumbent Hastert in the general election, and John is in the running again. With numbers like that, and especially given the shift in public sentiment in the last two years, this is a very winnable race.

Here is John's message to you on the importance of acting now to bring back paper ballots everywhere:

***********

Protect the Integrity of Our Democracy!

Representative Rush Holt (D-NJ) has introduced the "Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008". This act will help election authorities using e-voting to convert to paper ballots, offer emergency paper ballots or convert audits by hand counts. We want to make sure that every vote is counted, that every election result is verifiable.

Accoring to Holt, there are six states that have no verifiable paper trail and counties in 16 other states have the same problem. That means 20 states cannot fully verify their votes in the primaries or the November Presidential election.

This is no way to run a Democracy. This legislation needs to be passed immediately to protect our elections! Our democracy can only be as strong as the integrity of our elections. It is critical that we support Rep. Holt’s legislation. Citizens need to know that their vote will be counted, and that they can trust our electoral process.

Help us ensure our elections are transparent and verifiable, and protect the integrity of our democracy!

Let your representative know that We the People want all our votes tocount.

*** End John Laesch Message ***

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.
