Sparlampentest K-Tipp

Blackwater's Owner Has Spies for Hire

The Washington Post's Dana Hedgpeth reports that "The Prince Group, the holding company that owns Blackwater Worldwide ... has assembled a roster of former spooks - high-ranking figures from agencies such as the CIA and defense intelligence - that mirrors the slate of former military officials who run Blackwater. Mayor Bloomberg: We Love New York, But Hate Your Government's Rainforest Destruction!

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

Rainforest Portal a project of Ecological Internet http://www.rainforestportal.org/ November 2, 2007

TAKE ACTION New York City is one of the biggest rainforest destroyers; and their use of tropical hardwoods must end to protect global climate, ecosystems and biodiversity

http://www.rainforestportal.org/alerts/send.asp?id=nyc_rainforest

New York City's (NYC) Department of Parks and Recreation is one of America's largest destroyers of rainforests, reports New York based Rainforest Relief. Parks and other NYC and state agencies including the Department of Transportation (DOT) and NYC Transit use hundreds of thousands of board feet of tropical hardwoods per year. New York City's use of ancient forest timbers comes at great expense to the Earth's biodiversity, ecosystems, climate and prospects for achieving global ecological sustainability... Please support Rainforest Relief's and NY Climate Action Group's campaign demanding that Mayor Bloomberg end NYC's use of tropical hardwoods. In order to protect ancient forests, the people who live there, and global climate; NYC purchases of timbers derived from ancient forests must be stopped and an important precedent set that all industrial scaled ancient forest logging must end forever.

The Confrontation With Iran In The Calculations Of Us Presidential Candidates

American candidates in the primaries, despite the grandstanding among them, all hope that the Iran crisis is dealt with in one way or another and that they do not inherit the Iranian issue as it stands today. Some of them, such as Democrat Barack Obama, avoid providing a clear answer about what to do with Iran. Some, like Republican Rudy Giuliani, make fiery statements and surround themselves with neo-conservative advisors.

The decision comes after the council received 11 letters of objection to the proposals from people living near by.

What Hillary won’t say about torture

Salon
by Mark Benjamin

11/02/07

The first fusillade at Hillary Clinton during the Democrats’ feisty debate on Tuesday night came, as expected, from Barack Obama. But it included an unexpected subject. Obama called Clinton a flip-flopper on torture. ‘She has taken one position on torture several months ago, and then most recently has taken a different position,’ he fired. At first blush it seemed like an odd attack on Clinton, who has emphasized her ‘clear’ opposition to torture. But while Clinton continues to inch closer to the rest of the Democratic pack in her positions on the subject, her stance on torture isn’t as ironclad as it appears...

Invade and bomb with Hillary and Rahm

How do we account for the sudden rise of a new war hysteria, this time directed against Iran? While the administration has turned up the volume of its anti-Iranian rhetoric, and the mass media has duly — and largely uncritically — reported it, this is only part of the reason for the ominous uptick. The core reason is that we’re entering the political season, and none of the presidential candidates presented to us as ‘major’ will take war with Iran off the table: indeed, the Republicans — with one exception — seem to be competing with each other to see who can take the most ferociously provocative stance. When it comes to Iran, the Democrats are almost as bad — and, in the case of the putative frontrunner, perhaps even worse...

Bin Laden video doctored to seem new?

Raw Story

11/01/07

The Osama bin Laden video released this past September 7, just prior to the sixth anniversary of 9/11, has provoked widespread suspicions of fraud. In particular, bin Laden’s beard — which was grey and ragged in the video released just before the 2004 election — is thick, black, and neatly trimmed in the new footage. The video aroused widespread suspicions that bin Laden’s beard had been faked in some way, with former White House counterterrorism advisor Richard Clarke even speculating that bin Laden had shaved in order to hide out in a country like Indonesia, where Muslim men do not wear beards, and had then pasted on a false beard for the video...

Faulty Intel Source "Curve Ball" Revealed

60 Minutes has identified the man whose fabricated story of Iraqi biological weapons drove the U.S. argument for invading Iraq. It has also obtained video of "Curve Ball," as he was known in intelligence circles, and discovered he was not only a liar, but also a thief and a poor student instead of the chemical engineering whiz he claimed to be.

Let there be doubt

I don't remember anyone questioning the intelligence in the run-up to the Iraq war. In hindsight we could have done with a heavy dose of scepticism.

Stop the Insanity: No War With Iran

Gov. Bill Richardson

It is a tragedy that in the midst of one failed war in Iraq, George Bush and Dick Cheney are pushing a second front of failure and gearing up to attack Iran. The "unilateral sanctions" recently imposed will hurt diplomatic progress in the region, and I find it disconcerting that so many Democrats supported President Bush in his saber-rattling.

Revealed: Rumsfeld memos urged staff to 'keep elevating the terrorism threat'

From the Desk of Donald Rumsfeld

By Robin Wright

In a series of internal musings and memos to his staff, then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld argued that Muslims avoid "physical labor" and wrote of the need to "keep elevating the threat," "link Iraq to Iran" and develop "bumper sticker statements" to rally public support for an increasingly unpopular war.

Anti-phone mast campaigners to hold meeting

RIPE residents who object to a scheme to build a 20-metre mobile phone mast in the village centre are staging a public meeting at the village hall at 7.30pm on Monday, November 5.

Operators O2 overturned Wealden planners' decision to refuse the scheme.
They won the right to build the mast on land at Church Farm on appeal, saying there was a need to plug a hole in the network.

Angry Out-of-Control Cops, Stun Guns and Deadly Force

by Jon Christian Ryter

What I find alarming in the hours of video footage I've viewed over the past four years, is how many cops used stun guns out of anger to punish people they were forced to chase on footnot because the perp swung at them or resisted arrest, but simply because they had to chase them on foot and got winded. Stun guns are only slightly less dangerous than real guns. In the hands of an angry cop who thinks his "suspect" is still resisting because he's twisting in agony on the groundand gives him another pulsating burst for good measurea stun gun can be just as lethal as a gun.......
