Economy Goes From Bad to Worse

Dean Baker writes for Truthout: "The fact productivity growth has now slowed is a very bad sign. It means the economy is not doing well by any measure. The argument for conservative economic policy was always that by giving people more incentive to work and invest, productivity would grow more rapidly, and that this would benefit everyone in the long run. It turns out, even with the massive upward redistribution of income over the last quarter century, productivity is now growing at its slowest pace in the post-war period."

Saving Soldiers' Jobs

Amy R. Gershkoff writes for The Washington Post: "Thousands of the brave men and women lucky enough to return safely from Iraq are being left without jobs, without hope and without recourse. The government has failed to protect these reservists and has covered up the evidence. It is time for Americans to protect those who protect us by demanding thorough oversight of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act."

CIA's Secret Interrogation Program

Jane Mayer writes for The New Yorker: "Soon after Mohammed's arrest, sources say, his American captors told him, 'We're not going to kill you. But we're going to take you to the very brink of your death and back.' He was first taken to a secret U.S.-run prison in Afghanistan. According to a Human Rights Watch report released two years ago, there was a C.I.A.-affiliated black site in Afghanistan by 2002: an underground prison near Kabul International Airport. Distinctive for its absolute lack of light, it was referred to by detainees as the Dark Prison. Another detention facility was reportedly a former brick factory, just north of Kabul, known as the Salt Pit. The latter became infamous for the 2002 death of a detainee, reportedly from hypothermia, after prison officials stripped him naked and chained him to the floor of his concrete cell, in freezing temperatures."

Selective Prosecution

The New York Times writes: "One part of the Justice Department mess that requires more scrutiny is the growing evidence that the department may have singled out people for criminal prosecution to help Republicans win elections. The House Judiciary Committee has begun investigating several cases that raise serious questions. The panel should determine what role politics played in all of them."

The president is threatening me

Seattle Post-Intelligencer
by Marie Marchand

07/30/07

I will not be silent. Like millions of dissenters around the world, I want my name to be included among those who resisted those unjust policies and decrees. The American people must have the courage to resist. Otherwise, our friends and neighbors may begin to disappear, and we may not hear them being carted off in the middle of the night. As a patriotic American who holds steadfast to a belief in justice, I do not accept Bush’s threats to my constitutional and human rights passively. If I disappear, I disappear. But I will not go willingly, and I will not go unnamed...

The myth of “executive privilege”

Bush Administration officials have announced that President Bush will use a claim of ‘Executive Privilege’ to thwart congressional investigation into the firings of several U.S. attorneys. This claim is the latest in a long series of unconstitutional invocations of the notion of Executive Privilege by presidents prominent and obscure. In fact, Executive Privilege is itself a myth unfounded in the language or original understanding of the Constitution...

Keeping your home despite the New World Order

from Reason to Freedom
by Melinda Pillsbury-Foster

08/03/07

There was a time when a home was a place to live, a place where you raised your family, a place to grow your garden, plant your flowers and watch your fruit trees grow to full maturity so you could eat the fruit they would bear during their lifetime. Sunday dinner called families home to a table with meals cooked with food grown in their own garden or nearby. Home was where you grew old with your life partner; it was a place to die, remembered, by those you loved and who loved you. Today your home is a speculator’s bet, a henchman’s noose. Your home has become a tool of a political fraud scheme so massive that it touches the lives of every American, man, woman and child. There was a time when families worked to pay off their mortgage so that they knew they owned their home free and clear. The mortgage burning was a cause for celebration. No more. Now people determine what the maximum payment is that they can afford, and speculate on internal rates of return, tax deductions, and how fast they can flip their ‘home’ moving on to a larger home, a new neighborhood, different friends. What has happened to America?

Restoring Confidence

Strike the Root
by Robert Klassen

Recently I read an article based on the premise that Americans need to ‘restore confidence’ in their political government. I’ve read many calls to man the barricades, usually written by people who I would not expect to find at any barricades, but I can’t recall seeing one justified by restoring confidence in the state before. My immediate response to the premise was, why? Why should we have any confidence in the state whatsoever? The state has a 100% failure rate in history...

Bush gets a spying blank check

Consortium News
by Robert Parry

08/05/07

Eager to leave for its August recess, Congress handed George W. Bush another blank check on executive power, letting him order up spying directives against a vast number of people, including Americans, if they are physically outside the United States. The “Protect America Act of 2007” sets the standard for a surveillance order – which can last for up to one year – as simply that it be “directed at a person reasonably believed to be located outside the United States”...

Is the White House lying about spying again?

Salon
by Joan Walsh

08/04/07

Salon had an odd Associated Press wire story up mid day on Friday. On top was an ‘update’ trumpeting President Bush’s rejection of compromise attempts on FISA. At the same press conference the AP highlighted, Bush said: ‘I’m going to ask the DNI [Director of National Intelligence]: Does this legislation give you what you need to prevent an attack on the country? Is this what you need to do your job, Mr. DNI? That’s the question I’m going to ask. And if the answer is yes, I’ll sign the bill. And if the answer is no, I’m going to veto the bill.’ But the update was attached to a main story reporting that the DNI — Mike McConnell — was going along with a compromise with Democrats...

Surveillance Law Goes Far Beyond What White House Needed

James Risen reports for The New York Times that Bush has signed legislation into law broadly expanding the government's authority to eavesdrop on the international telephone calls and email messages of American citizens without warrants. The impact reaches far beyond what the Bush administration had said was needed to gather information about foreign terrorists. For the first time, the new law makes surveillance without warrants, which was being conducted in secret by the NSA and in disregard of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, legal. FISA is the 1978 law that was supposed to regulate the way the government can listen to the private communications of American citizens.

Dangerous Deja Vu...

Co-Sponsor Senator Feingold's Censure Resolutions

Last week law-abiding Americans were once again forced to surrender their rights and freedoms. The event was eerily similar to the unwise passage of the PATRIOT Act some six years ago. We once again had a power hungry executive and a Senate controlled by Democrats. The only difference was that the House of Representatives is now under the control of Democrats - which makes what happened all the more troubling.

The Democratic-led Congress voted to allow the President and his administration to intercept the phone calls and emails of American citizens, without a warrant, with virtually zero judicial oversight, and no reporting whatsoever to Congress. The government is now allowed to grab any communication believed to be from outside the U.S. That includes American citizens who live overseas, service members such as those in Iraq, journalists reporting from overseas, or even Members of Congress who are abroad and call home to the United States - all without any sort of court oversight. This goes far beyond the identified problem of foreign-to-foreign communications that we all agree needed to be fixed.

We cannot allow these abuses to go unchallenged. With your help and valuable input over the last two weeks, late last Friday I formally introduced two censure resolutions to hold President Bush, and his administration, responsible for undermining the rule of law time and time again, and for misleading this country into an unwise war in Iraq and mismanaging the situation that followed.

Demand Accountability: Become a Citizen Co-Sponsor of Censure
http://ga1.org/campaign/censure07/86u3isb4vbx3n3w?source=web_censure0707d

The first censure resolution addresses the administration's numerous attacks on our Constitution and the rule of law. The President and Attorney General have violated the foundation of our government. This censure resolution will condemn the President and Attorney General for the administration's illegal domestic wiretapping program, for redefining torture, for its extreme positions on the legal status of detainees that has been rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court more than once, and for its refusal to cooperate with Congress' responsibility to conduct adequate oversight as mandated in the Constitution.

The second censure resolution holds the President and Vice President responsible for both leading our country into Iraq under false pretenses and for leading our country into a war without adequate planning. The administration exaggerated the threat from Iraq, overstated the case that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and falsely linked Iraq to al Qaeda and the horrific attacks of September 11th, 2001. They must be held to account for leading our nation down a path that has made America less safe and has hurt our ability to fight terrorism around the world.

Demand Accountability: Become a Citizen Co-Sponsor of Censure
http://ga1.org/campaign/censure07/86u3isb4vbx3n3w?source=web_censure0707d

Congress cannot continue to stand by and allow the actions of this President and his administration to go unchallenged. The legislation that passed last week expires in six months, and at that point we will likely see a fight similar to the one that took place last week. We cannot let this President, or any President, continue to thumb their nose at the Constitution and the rule of law.

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) has joined me in this effort and has introduced both censure resolutions in the House - but we cannot do it alone. Please sign on as a Citizen Co-Sponsor of Censure so we can show other elected officials in Congress that the American people will not give up in their demand for accountability.

Sincerely,

Russ Feingold
United States Senator

Please Tell the EU: Don't Sacrifice Birds and Ecosystems for Biofuel Expansion

ACTION ALERT

PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

By Climate Ark, a project of Ecological Internet, Inc. http://www.climateark.org/

August 5, 2007

TAKE ACTION There are limits to agricultural intensification that if surpassed threaten European wildlife and terrestrial ecosystem sustainability http://www.climateark.org/alerts/send.asp?id=europe_biofuel_ecosystem

Europe's bird and insect populations, as well as heavily stressed terrestrial ecosystems, face decimation as the European Commissioner for Agriculture plans to scrap land set-asides for the 2008 season. This unexpected move is a response to rising grain prices – caused by the growing biofuel sector and worsening climate change impacts. Europe’s common farmland birds have declined by nearly 50% since 1980... 45% of Europe's butterflies are at risk of extinction and a recent study found
80% declines in bee diversity and 70% declines in the diversity of wild flowers dependent on pollination on hundreds of sites in the UK and Netherlands... the future Europe's ecosystem functionality such as pollination and provisions of food supplies may be at risk as pollinators are driven into extinction. Biofuel expansion for the European market is already causing massive deforestation, biodiversity losses, displacements of local communities and loss of food sovereignty in the global South – now Europe's wildlife and remaining terrestrial ecosystems are likely to become another victim. Please send the letter below to ask Europe's politicians not to scrap land set-asides until they are substituted for a more sustainable EU agricultural policy based on organic agriculture and biodiverse mixed farming system. Biofuel targets and incentives must be abolished now, to protect biodiversity and food supplies worldwide.

TAKE ACTION NOW: http://www.climateark.org/alerts/send.asp?id=europe_biofuel_ecosystem

Inside a new anti-war campaign

Remember President Bush’s summer from hell? Gold Star mother Cindy Sheehan had camped out in Crawford, Texas, igniting the nascent antiwar movement. Two years later, as Congress heads off on its August recess, antiwar activists are waging their Iraq Summer campaign. The idea: to bird-dog 40 lawmakers, all Republicans, much the way Sheehan did Bush. Unlike Californian Sheehan, these protesters are homegrown. When Minnesota’s Republican Sen. Patriots Who Love the Troops to Death

The New York Times's Frank Rich says, "Gerald Ford spoke the truth when he called Watergate 'our long national nightmare,' but even a nightmare can have its interludes of rib-splitting farce."

39 California Counties' Vote Systems in Question

Hector Becerra and Jordan Rau of The Los Angeles Times report: "County election officials scrambled on Saturday to develop contingency plans for the February presidential primary election after California's secretary of state imposed broad restrictions on electronic voting machines that she said are susceptible to hacking."

Is California GOP Trying to Steal the 2008 Election?

Newsweek writer Jonathan Alter says, "Our way of electing presidents has always been fertile ground for mischief. But there's sensible mischief - toying with existing laws and the Constitution to reflect popular will - and then there's the other kind, which tries to rig admission to the Electoral College for strictly partisan purposes. Mischief-makers in California (Republicans) and North Carolina (Democrats) are at work on changes that would subvert the system for momentary advantage and - in ways the political world is only beginning to understand - dramatically increase the odds that a Republican will be elected president in 2008."

House Approves Record $460B Pentagon Budget

Andrew Taylor, writing for the Associated Press, reports that a record $460 billion Pentagon budget approved by lawmakers late Saturday night "would add money for equipment for the National Guard and Reserve" but "does not include Bush's 2008 funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Democrats say they want to consider that money in separate legislation in September."

WE THE PEOPLE vs. CORPORATIST-GLOBALISM

by Professor Steven Yates

Canadians, by the way, are also mobilizing their own We the People (Vive le Canada, the Canadian Action Party, et al.) to oppose their branch of the power-elite represented by the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Canada West Foundation, both of which advocate “deep integration” with the U.S. and Mexico. When the SPP meets August 20-21 at Montebello, Quebecsurrounded by heavy securitythere may be as many as 10,000 protesters in the area.......

Council blunder leads to new mast

By Nurinder Johal

Angry: Richard Thompson front with Kilsby residents in front of the mobile phone mast (MAST_079007)

RESIDENTS are angry about a phone mast that has been built in their village because of a council blunder.

Villagers in rural Kilsby were against the Orange phone mast being built.

They claim the 15-metre mast situated at the mouth of Kilsby tunnel is an eyesore and want it to be taken down.

--------

And still it goes on, week after week! The guilty LPA planning officers
(who give their so-called professional advice to councillors and so often recommend approval of telecoms applications without due consideration of the pros and cons) demonstrate yet again their incompetence and ignorance of the associated legislation. Any complaint to the Local Government Ombudsman in such circumstances is all very well but the sooner someone takes an LPA to court (vide the the learned statements of three Appeal Court judges in the 'Bardsey' case) the better. We might then see something being done!

CIA, not Pakistan, should be asked about Osama's whereabouts

Owais Ahmed Ghani, governor of Balochistan, said here on Thursday that it is the CIA and not Pakistan that should be asked where Osama Bin Laden is, since it was the CIA that recruited, trained and shepherded the future chief of Al Qaeda during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the ensuing conflict.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday the Bush administration is waging a "phony war" on terrorism, warning that the country is losing ground against the kind of Islamic radicals who attacked the country on Sept. 11, 2001.

Iraq Power Grid Said to Be Near Collapse

Power supplies in Baghdad have been sporadic all summer and now are down to just a few hours a day, if that. The water supply in the capital has also been severely curtailed by power blackouts and cuts that have affected pumping and filtration stations.

Stock Market Meltdown

It's a Bloodbath. That's the only way to describe it.

By Mike Whitney

On Friday the Dow Jones took a 280 point nosedive on fears that that losses in the subprime market will spill over into the broader economy and cut into GDP. Ever since the two Bear Stearns hedge funds folded a couple weeks ago the stock market has been writhing like a drug-addict in a detox-cell. Yesterday's sell-off added to last week's plunge that wiped out $2.1 trillion in value from global equity markets.

A Week in the Death of Iraq

By Dr. Mohammed

When will I die? That's the question circling in my head when I awake on Wednesday. I'm sweating, as usual. My muscles ache from another long night of no electricity in weather only slightly cooler than hell. As I dress for work, other questions assail me: How will I die? Will it be a shot in the head? Will I be blown to pieces? Or be seized at a police checkpoint because of my sect, then tortured and killed and thrown out on the sidewalk?

Interkultureller Humanismus als Hoffnung für das 21. Jahrhundert - The Prospects of Intercultural Humanism in the 21st Century

The Prospects of Intercultural Humanism in the 21st Century

The values that the Jewish physicist Albert Einstein and the Christian physicist, philosopher, and peace researcher Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker attribute to the Hindu politician Mahatma Gandhi, point towards an intercultural humanism which we regard as part of a worldwide array of religions and perspectives of the world which could and should survive as an orientation for the 21st century.
