Judge Orders OSHA to Release Toxin Information

"A federal judge has ordered the Labor Department to share with the public the results of years of toxic substance sampling in American workplaces. Federal officials said Monday they were reviewing the decision. The decision, by US District Judge Mary L. Cooper, came in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit by former Labor Department official Adam Finkel, who now is a whistleblower," reports The Associated Press.

FDA Officials Operated Under Veil of Secrecy

"For years, the public calendars of two top federal drug safety officials were largely blank - devoid of the required detail about their contacts with the industry they regulated. Open government experts and lawmakers said it is only the latest example of the lack of transparency at the Food and Drug Administration and a violation of the spirit of open government," reports The Associated Press.

DOJ Documents Show Sampson Deleted Email

Matt Renner reports for Truthout: "An internal Department of Justice email dealing with a series of the most controversial aspects of the US attorney firing scandal was deleted by a DOJ official the day after Congress began to address the firings. Three months later, the official told Congressional investigators that he had not destroyed any documents or deleted any records relating to the US attorney firings. This is the first publicly released evidence that individuals directly involved in the plan to fire eight US attorneys have destroyed documents that are of interest to Congressional investigators."

Do Not Execute Elijah Page!

The state of South Dakota is set to execute Elijah Page on July 9-13 for the March 2000 murder of Allan Poage in Spearfish, SD. Page was 18 at the time of this crime. His mother allowed drug dealers to molest him in exchange for drugs and his stepfather once use him as a human shield in a drug-related shootout. His trial judge even stated, "Most parents treated their pets better than your parents treated you." Of his two codefendents, one received the death penalty and another received a life sentence.

Page has given up his appeals. This will be South Dakota's first execution in 60 years.

ACT NOW by contacting Gov. Mike Rounds requesting that Elijah Page's execution be halted!

CIA’s darkest secret

Boston Globe
by James Carroll

07/02/07

Every so often, the front page trumpets ethical and legal lapses committed by US intelligence agencies. In Iraq, they have run the gamut from pre war falsification of weapons data to surveillance of American citizens to kidnapping to torture of prisoners. During the Cold War, it was ‘black operations’ that included staging coups, assassinating foreign leaders, infiltrating American organizations, conspiring with Mafia groups, spying on journalists — perhaps even murder. Last week, the latest paroxysm of revelation announced, as a New York Times headline put it, ‘CIA Skeleton … [A] Catalogue of Wiretaps, Assassination Plots, and Mind Control.’ But the so called ‘family jewels’ of the CIA’s hidden abuses may not enshrine the deepest and darkest secret...

US role in Islamist terrorism

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

07/02/07

When U.S. government officials and foreign policy pundits discuss terrorism, they usually focus on the characteristics, personnel, history, tactics, targets, objectives and effects of terrorist organizations. They rarely talk about motives. To fully understand Islamic terrorism, one needs to understand what triggers this extraordinary rage. And throughout history one factor stands out above all else: the occupation of Muslim land by non-Muslim forces...

Our militarized police departments

Reason
by Radley Balko

07/02/07

Militarization is a broad term that refers to using military-style weapons, tactics, training, uniforms, and even heavy equipment by civilian police departments. It’s a troubling trend because the military has a very different and distinct role than our domestic peace officers. The military’s job is to annihilate a foreign enemy. The police are supposed to protect us while upholding our constitutional rights. It’s dangerous to conflate the two. But that’s exactly what we’re doing...

Someone in the U.S. government finally has noticed the plight of Iraqi Christians. A congressional appropriations subcommittee has voted to spend $10 million to aid displaced religious minorities within Iraq. That mostly means Christians. Although Islam long has been in the ascendancy in Iraq, the so-called Assyrians, who speak a neo-Aramaic language, represent a distinct religious minority, generally grouped in the Chaldean, Apostolic Catholic, and Syriac Orthodox churches. The Assyrians predate the rise of Islam, representing a 7,000 year-old civilization. They have survived numerous episodes of war and catastrophe. Today, however, the Iraqi Christian community faces possible extermination...

The phones were meant to set off blasts when they were called, but the devices failed to detonate the mixture of gas canisters and nails in the two Mercedes cars parked in London’s entertainment district...

This illegal war made Scotland a target for terrorists

Saturday was indeed a very sad day for us all in Scotland. For the first time in centuries Scotland has become a target for acts of terrorism. During the IRA terrorist campaign Scotland was not considered a target. However, Tony Blair and the Labour party, including the former first minister Jack McConnell, who supported the illegal Iraqi war, have now made Scotland an inevitable prime target by sending our troops to Iraq.

Historic street 'wrecked' by mast

By Richard Bean

The striking skyline of Ashton's most historic street may be "wrecked" by 21st century technology.

Phone giant T-Mobile wants to put a communications mast on the top of the Greensway Shopping Arcade in Ashton's main Gerard Street.

But a councillor claims that the stark structure would make a mockery of the Conservation Area status recently granted to the town centre after an exhaustive survey of its remaining historic buildings.

Guantanamo Bay: A military insider speaks out

Miami Herald
by James Ross

07/01/07

It’s not every day that a 26-year veteran in U.S. military intelligence puts his career on the line by publicly criticizing a high-profile operation. But Lt. Col. Stephen Abraham, an Army reservist and lawyer, did just that last week in a Supreme Court affidavit that challenges the court’s refusal to hear the claims of Guantanamo Bay detainees...

The end of the GOP

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

07/02/07

The political disintegration of the Republicans was preceded by a long, drawn-out intellectual decline that dates from the time of the neoconservative incursion into GOP ranks during the Reagan presidency, when the Scoop Jackson Democrats first landed on right-wing shores and carved out a beachhead in the conservative movement. The birth of ‘Big Government conservatism,’ and the role this oxymoronic set of ideas played in leading to the GOP’s present debacle, sounded the death-knell of the movement as a coherent set of ideas historically rooted in American traditions. Since 9/11, conservatism has reverted back to European-style absolutism, as evidenced by the Right’s embrace of the revisionist theory of the ‘unitary presidency,’ which elevates the president in wartime to monarchical status. That Bruce Fein, a leading conservative legal theorist of the Reagan era, is now calling for the impeachment of Dick Cheney, on the grounds that his office has been the intellectual nerve center of this administration’s bid to rule by edict, signals the end of the GOP coalition as we know it...

No ID? No beer for you!

Fox News

07/01/07

Comer Wilson is 66 years old with a long white beard, and he has not had to show his ID to buy beer in a while. But starting Sunday, he and everyone else in Tennessee will be required to show identification before buying beer in state stores — no matter how old the buyer appears. ‘It’s the stupidest law I ever heard of,’ Wilson said. ‘You can see I’m over 21.’ Tennessee is the first U.S. state to make universal carding mandatory, says the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association. However, the law does not apply to beer sales in bars and restaurants, and it does not cover wine and liquor...

Leahy: Subpoena dispute could end up in court

USA Today

07/01/07

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman said Sunday he was ready to go to court if the White House resisted subpoenas for information on the firing of federal prosecutors. ‘If they don’t cooperate, yes I’ll go that far,’ said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. He was asked in a broadcast interview whether he would seek a congressional vote on contempt citations if President Bush did not comply. That move would push the matter to court...

Patrick Leahy Ready to Fight White House

"The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman said Sunday he was ready to go to court if the White House resisted Congressional subpoenas for information on the firing of federal prosecutors," reports Hope Yen of The Associated Press. While, John Nichols of the Nation writes, "In practice, this administration has operated above, or more precisely outside the law for more than six years. Without proper Congressional and judicial oversight, the White House has expanded the reach and authority of the executive branch far beyond the limits imagined by the founders. And it will continue to do so until Congress reasserts itself as a coequal branch of government."

Lieberman wants more surveillance cameras

The Hill

07/01/07

Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), the chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, said Sunday he wants to ‘more widely’ use surveillance cameras across the country. ‘The Brits have got something smart going in England, and it was part of why I believe they were able to so quickly apprehend suspects in the terrorist acts over the weekend, and that is they have cameras all over London and other of their major cities,’ Lieberman said. ‘I think it’s just common sense to do that here much more widely,’ he added. ‘And of course, we can do it without compromising anybody’s real privacy.’ Lieberman lamented the ‘petty, partisan fighting’ in Congress and called on his colleagues to join together to upgrade the nation’s electronic surveillance capabilities....
