The Politics of the Man Behind "24"

For all its fictional liberties, "24" depicts the fight against Islamist extremism much as the Bush administration has defined it: as an all-consuming struggle for America's survival that demands the toughest of tactics. Not long after September 11, Vice President Dick Cheney alluded vaguely to the fact that America must begin working through the "dark side" in countering terrorism. On "24," the dark side is on full view. Joel Surnow - the co-creator and executive producer of "24," who has jokingly called himself a "right-wing nut job" - shares his show's hard-line perspective.

Smearing Like It's 2003

E.J. Dionne Jr. writes: "The fabricate-and-smear cycle illustrated so dramatically during the case of I. Lewis 'Scooter' Libby explains why President Bush is failing to rally support for the latest iteration of his Iraq policy. The administration's willingness at the outset to say anything - no matter how questionable - to justify the war, has destroyed its credibility. Its habit of attacking those who expressed misgivings has destroyed any goodwill it might have enjoyed. Bush and Cheney have lost the benefit of the doubt."

Three Charges in the Case for War

Michael T. Klare writes: "I am convinced that Bush has already decided an attack is his only option and the rest is a charade he must go through to satisfy his European allies. The proof of this, I believe, lies half-hidden in recent public statements of his, which, if pieced together, provide a casus belli, or formal list of justifications, for going to war."

GIs Petition Congress to End Iraq War

Correspondent Lara Logan heard dissension in the ranks from a large group of service members who are fed up and have decided to go public. They're not going AWOL, they're not disobeying orders or even refusing to fight in Iraq. But they are doing something unthinkable to many in uniform: bypassing the chain of command to denounce a war they're in the middle of fighting.

Application for phone mast

By Felicity Collinson

A MOBILE phone giant has lodged a planning request to erect a mast in the grounds of a cricket club.

T-Mobile wants to house the telecommunications mast in the form of a flag pole at Hartlepool Cricket Club, in Park Drive.

And, after having consultations with members of the West Park club, the phone giant has finally lodged a planning application to Hartlepool Borough Council.

However, there is no date as yet for when the issue will be discussed by the planning committee.

A council spokesman said: "The application has been submitted but there is no date for when it will be discussed as yet."

Last year, the Mail reported how the club was to receive a cash payment from T-Mobile for housing the mast, which would be used to buy an all-weather pitch.

And the club had no objections to the proposal as long as no danger to health could be proved.

However, there are objectors to the plan, including former councillor Jim Allan.

He is promoting a leaflet that will be sent to Park ward residents citing reasons why they should object to it.

The reasons include:

- It would be an unwelcome intrusion to the historic Park conservation area;
- The value of houses around the cricket club would be affected;
- Radiation from the mast could be detrimental to health and studies show sleeplessness, fatigue, irritability and sometimes cancer clusters;
- It would cause people to worry about their health;
- Radiation from the mast could affect the health of wildlife;
- French scientists recommend that masts are not erected closer than 900ft to areas where people live, work or play.

The Mail has previously reported concerns by Councillor Pauline Laffey, Conservative representative for the Park ward.

She said: "We have a park nearby and hundreds of homes, and I just don't think it's safe."

But Bill Shurmer, chairman of Hartlepool Cricket Club, said members believed the mast would be discreet and had allowed T-Mobile to proceed with a planning application.

He said: "We will do nothing that the experts consider a danger to health. "Indeed, any decision may be out of our hands, subject to the result of the planning application."

A T-Mobile spokesman said its interest was "due to the demand of services".

The next generation of threats

Boston Globe
by Ralph Kaplan & Harvey Silverglate

02/24/07

Much ink has been spilt extolling the latest progress made in recognizing the second- and third-most serious threats facing mankind and the planet. The recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has forced even the recalcitrant Bush administration to back down in the face of agreement between the scientific and political communities, prodded by a citizenry frightened by disturbing weather patterns. Meanwhile, the effort to control the world’s current supply of fissile material, and limit the future manufacture of more of it by rogue states, has picked up steam, fueled by scientists’ warnings and by public appeals from respected former officials. … Yet there is an even more urgent danger. Besides chemical and biological weapons, we are now seeing advances in the fields of genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics (so-called GNR technologies ) that threaten destruction even more horrific than that of atomic devices or climate change...

Will voters accept Hillary Clinton’s nonapology?

Christian Science Monitor
by Daniel Schorr

02/23/07

Welcome to the politics of apologia — the 2007 version. In the 2004 election, Sen. John Kerry (D) of Massachusetts had to endure charges that he was flip-flopping on funding for the Iraq war. In 1964, only two senators — Wayne Morse (D) of Oregon and Ernest Gruening (D) of Alaska — voted against the Tonkin Gulf Resolution authorizing President Johnson to expand the Vietnam War. I don’t recall any of the others offering apologies. So now, Sen. Hillary Clinton is being warned by some of her supporters that she may endanger her front-runner status if she refuses to make some outright apology for having voted along with 76 other senators in 2002 to empower the president to use force in Iraq. A simple ‘I was conned and I’m sorry it happened’ might have done it. But the evolution of her position is like a study in self-torture...

Exodus of Iraq’s ancient minorities

Independent [UK]
by Patrick Cockburn

02/26/07

Iraq’s minorities, some of the oldest communities in the world, are being driven from the country by a wave of violence against them because they are identified with the occupation and easy targets for kidnappers and death squads. A ‘huge exodus’ is now taking place, according to a report by Minority Rights Group International. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says 30 per cent of the 1.8 million Iraqis who have fled to Jordan, Syria and elsewhere come from the minorities. The Christians, who have lived in Iraq for 2,000 years, survived the Muslim invasion in the 7th century and the Mongol onslaught in the 13th but are now being eradicated as their churches are bombed and members of their faith hunted down and killed along with other minority faiths...

Mast planning rules shake-up

By Juliette Astrup

CHANGES to Borough of Poole's planning rules mean applications for many mobile phone masts will never go before councillors.

Masts below 15 metres have "prior approval" status, a procedure where permission is deemed granted if the planning authority does not respond to the developer's application within 56 days.

Councillors used to have the facility to "red flag" these applications and bring them before the committee, usually when neighbours complained.

But last month it was agreed prior approval applications would be excluded from that process.

Peter Watson, head of planning, said the move had been made because these applications rarely came before committee for timing reasons. The date an application was submitted often meant the 56-day response deadline ran out before it could be scheduled for a meeting.

But Cllr Mike Brooke is fighting to have the decision reversed, and calling for extra planning meetings to make sure these applications have a chance to be heard.

"It removes the rights of the residents to see an open, transparent debate at committee," he said. "The decision will be made in a back office.

"It might be done in collaboration with a councillor, but the public won't get to see it."

He said he would be "calling in" the decision to be discussed at next month's scrutiny committee.

Steve Barker, of Sorrel Gardens, is leading a campaign against plans for a 12- metre mobile phone mast on the corner of Pinesprings Drive and Beechbank Avenue in Broadstone.

So far, 70 letters of complaint have been sent and 200 signatures gathered on a petition.

The 46-year-old IT development director said: "Residents feel this is one of the biggest planning issues affecting them. To downgrade it and remove these applications from the full democratic process can only be for the benefit of the planning committee rather than residents."

Mr Watson said the changes in the "red card" procedure simply formalised what was already being done.

He added: "Changes to the procedure ensure that informed decisions relating to mobile phone masts are always made within the correct time scales."

The Next Pat Tillman-Style Cover-Up?

"There once was a young woman from a St. Louis suburb. She was an honor roll student, she played the violin, she donated blood and volunteered for American Heart Association walks. She elected to put off college for a while and joined the Army once out of school. She was LaVena Johnson, private first class, and she died near Balad, Iraq, on July 19, 2005, just eight days shy of her twentieth birthday. The tragedy of her story begins there," according to Philip Barron.

This Is No Way to Treat a Wounded Warrior

"A day at Walter Reed Army Medical Center is an eye-opener - about our soldiers, our government generally and the Bush administration," says Ann McFeatters. "What I saw was not a lack of caring or quality medical care. But I found a soldier without his legs sent in four different directions for four forms over the course of a day. His exhausted wife, near tears, was pushing him in a wheelchair through ice."

US Developing Contingency Plan to Bomb Iran

Despite the Bush administration's insistence it has no plans to go to war with Iran, a Pentagon panel has been created to plan a bombing attack that could be implemented within 24 hours of getting the go-ahead from President George W. Bush, investigative reporter Seymour Hersh reports in the latest issue of The New Yorker magazine.

Hazards of RF MW radiation and EMF in populated areas

Friday, February 23, 2007 4:42 PM
Subject: Thank You.

Chairman Leslie Daigle, Media & Communications Committee

Thank you for allowing Chris Sullivan a generous amount of time to speak against citywide Wi Fi at the February 12th Media & Communications Committee Meeting. While listening to the general discussion it became apparent to me that the issue of biological harm from non-ionizing RF MW radiation is not well understood by this Committee. For example, members are unaware that Safety Guidelines issued by the FCC over a decade ago do not reflect current scientific opinion regarding the minimum exposure level at which harm to living beings begins.

I know that you are an advocate of Women's Issues, including health, and have dedicated an impressive amount of time in successfully promoting an awareness of these issues. I now plead with you to learn more about women's health as it relates to man-made, non-ionizing RF MW radiation in our environment. Accurate information on this cannot be obtained from scientists affiliated with/funded by the Telecom Industry. They have an obvious conflict of interest.

I handed a letter to your Committee on February 12th recommending a consultant who has worked in the City of Irvine and many other California cities on reducing the hazards of RF MW radiation and EMF in populated areas. I do not know this consultant (Cindy Sage) personally but have read thoroughly researched, well documented, unbiased papers she's presented to international conferences over the years. I believe her expertise will help the City of Newport Beach make informed decisions about whether (and where) to locate RF MW emitting installations (including cell phone towers) within its boundaries. This will help my health, the health of all women and children who reside in Newport Beach. Not to mention the health of men of our species, pets and wildlife. I trust that you are listening, that you care and will become involved in this potentially grave matter.

With your background of twelve years in the Telecom Industry and your personal goal of helping women, I think you are the right person at the right time to make a difference in the future well-being of every resident, tourist, worker in Newport Beach. And if all our City Council Members join you in becoming more knowledgeable about the medical aspects of this issue, the Council can make enlightened decisions that won't compromise health for commerce. This will put Newport Beach on the map with other forward-looking cities that genuinely value quality of life.

A final note: I believe it is safe to say that the now scientifically established link between disease and exposure to RF MW radiation will insure that the wave of the future in communications will not be microwave.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Bonnet
