What the Democrats Must Do

"The Congressional Democratic leadership, eager to start investigations into the failures and cover-ups of their Republican predecessors, have a list; but so far, the 'black sites' of the CIA are far from a priority. But the president - who gave the CIA 'special license' in 2002 to operate outside the law in kidnapping suspected terrorists and sending them to torture prisons abroad for interrogation - has already protected its interrogators with provisions he and Dick Cheney inserted into the Military Commissions Act of 2006," writes Nat Hentoff.

Bush Says US Won't Pull Out of Iraq

President Bush, under pressure to change direction in Iraq, said Tuesday that he will not be persuaded by any calls to withdraw American troops. Recent US elections added fuel to the argument from Democrats that US soldiers need to come home. But Bush has resisted that, even while projecting the need for a different approach.

Neighborhood by Neighborhood, Baghdad Descends Into Civil War

Sectarian violence has turned Baghdad into a deadly jigsaw puzzle of contested neighborhoods where armed bands of Shiite and Sunni Muslims battle daily for control, in fighting that is far more similar to an organized military campaign than is generally acknowledged.

US Dominance of the Middle East Has Ended

"The age of US dominance in the Middle East has ended, and a new era in the modern history of the region has begun," writes Richard Haass. "It will be shaped by new actors and new forces competing for influence, and to master it, Washington will have to rely more on diplomacy than on military might."

Media Starting to Describe Iraq Conflict as "Civil War"

For months, the media have rejected the use of the term "civil war" to describe the descent into outright murder and torture in Iraq. Apparently the utter chaos and carnage of the past week has finally convinced NBC News and MSNBC to begin to use "civil war" without apology.

Iraq Panel's Real Agenda: Damage Control

"Even as Washington waits with bated breath for the Iraq Study Group to release its findings," writes Andrew Bacevich, "the rest of us should see this gambit for what it is: an attempt to deflect attention from the larger questions raised by America's failure in Iraq, and to shore up the authority of the foreign policy establishment that steered the United States into this quagmire. This ostentatiously bipartisan panel of Wise Men (and one woman) can't really be searching for truth. It is engaged in damage control."

Cell firms threaten to put antennas only in poor areas

By Eran Gabay

If Israel's cellular carriers are forced to fully indemnify municipalities for the drop in property values caused by proximity to cellular antennas, then there are obviously going to be fewer antennas, warned the CEO of one carrier in a conversation with TheMarker. That means that the radiation emitted by cell phones will actually increase, he said. Moreover, the CEO said, the companies will simply build their antennas in low income neighborhoods. "You can understand for yourself that we aren't talking about areas where rich people live," he added. The Forum of Cellular Companies, a body that comprises Israel's three main cellular carriers - Pelephone Communications, Partner Communications and Cellcom - is handling the companies' response to the indemnification demand.

They have already spent NIS 10 million over the last year convincing the public that there is no danger in cellular telephone radiation, and are planning on at least doubling that amount next year. Part of this money, the companies decided, will be used to establish a national visitors center about the cellular industry. And the effort seems to be paying off: Recent surveys that the forum commissioned have shown a decrease in the public's worries about cellular radiation.

Two weeks ago, the forum scheduled a meeting with the Education Ministry to discuss how to explain properly to teachers, parents and students that placing an antenna at a school would actually significantly reduce the radiation emitted by the students' cell phones. The companies argue that the more antennas there are in a given area, the less powerful they need to be, and thus the lower the radiation produced by the cell phone.

The CEO of the cellular operator confirmed that the topic of antennas at schools arose at the forum. The forum also intends to try to recruit the Environment Ministry's support for its position, in order to show that it this position is not based solely on commercial considerations.

Yesterday, TheMarker reported that the effort to set the level of indemnification for decreases in property values is stuck fast, as none of the parties involved is actually interested in making progress at this time. Currently, cellular operators are required to provide 100 percent indemnification.

There are now about 6,700 cellular antennas in Israel, and Pelephone's decision to build a third-generation network will mean the addition of 700 more.

DOJ Probes NSA Spying, Democrats Suspicious

The Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General announced Monday that it will immediately launch a probe into the agency's involvement with the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program, raising suspicions among Democrats, who believe the timing of the investigation is an attempt by the Bush administration to circumvent Congressional hearings into the issue when they assume control of the House in January.

Mobile phones should be tagged ‘harmful to health’

By Asma Ali Zain

25 November 2006

DUBAI — Mobile phone experts have requested the Ministry of Health to classify mobile phones as potential health hazards due to the high amounts of radiation that electronic gadgets emit.

At a meeting organised at Al Bustan Rotana Hotel by Bauer Biotech recently, the experts discussed the harmful effects of electronic gadgets, especially cell phones, on human health.

David Furlong, international therapist and author as well as a health practitioner, said that even a simple act such as keeping a mobile phone in a chest pocket could affect the energy fields in the body and cause disturbances in the body’s resonance.

Attendants of the meeting suggested that the MoH should treat mobile phones as harmful as cigarettes and label the gadgets as harmful to human health.

“We are not aware of the effects of radiation on our bodies,” he explained, adding that though the use of electronic gadgets cannot be ruled out entirely, the effects could be neutralised. “Today, a number of research studies from around the world prove conclusively that the enhanced usage of cell phones, beepers, Ipods, laptops and other modern electronic devices have the possibility of harming the human body,” he added.

Furlong said that only a few people could feel the effects of radiation immediately. “They have obvious symptoms such as disturbances, depression, headaches, reduced concentration, hot spots in the brain, overheating of eyes (leading to eye tumours), heart problems and cataracta,” he said.

“But there are only a few people who head to doctors with related symptoms. Tests have proved that radiation might have been the cause,” he added.

He also said that prolonged usage of the mobile phones increased body heat and blood pressure, impotency among men, exhaustion, genotype disturbances and blood formulations. “Tests have also proved that 90 per cent of tumours are related to radiation,” added Furlong. Friedrich J Bauer from Bauer Biotech, who is in Dubai to introduce the Green8 which neutralises the electromagnetic fields, said that there has been a dramatic increase in radiation in the world over the years.

Giving figures Bauer said that there were over 120 million mobile phones in Europe alone and 191 million in the Middle East region. “Until 2005 the number of cell phones expected worldwide was 2,000 million,” he said.

Describing experiments, Bauer said that two Russian journalists cooked an egg in 65 minutes with the cell phones. “It only takes two minutes of speaking on a cellular phone for the radiation to cross the protective Blood Brain Barrier,” he explained.

To watch Dobbs work, to trust him, as many do, the way we once trusted Walter Cronkite, is to see America as a nation under siege. We are, if we're to believe Dobbs, suffering from policies that have encouraged undocumented workers to cross the Mexican border only to depress wages, overwhelm public schools, and blaze the way for infiltrating terrorists. At the same time, we are under attack from within, he says, from multinational corporations: the same grand companies that once provided the middle class with decent jobs and pensions but now find it easier and cheaper to ship out jobs to India and China.

Withdrawal: less painful now than later

Cato Institute
by Ted Galen Carpenter

11/28/06

Except when the survival of the nation is at stake, all military missions must be judged according to a cost-benefit calculation. Iraq has never come close to being a war for America's survival. It was an elective war -- a war of choice, and a bad choice at that. How much are Americans willing to pay in blood, treasure and toil to try to prevail in Iraq? The costs have already been staggering. We have spent more than $340 billion, and the meter is running at more than $7 billion a month. The loss of life is even more horrific. Nearly 2,900 American troops have perished, and the Iraqi government estimates that 150,000 of its citizens have died in the carnage. And there is no end in sight...

The dollar plunged with startling ferocity late last week, driven by heavy selling. This was very bearish action that signals panic, and the probable onset of a severe downtrend. Soziale Kapitalpartnerschaft (Investivlohn): Trostpflaster für Lohnverzicht?

"Investivlohn"

November 2006 in Dresden (pdf) http://www.dresden2006.cdu.de/download/060904_antrag_pt_mitarbeiterbeteiligung.pdf

Mitarbeiter-Kapitalbeteiligung: Metallindustrie sieht Investivlohn kritisch

Juni 2001 http://www.labournet.de/diskussion/gewerkschaft/berlin.html

Moveon Write-in Campaign for Impeachment

Moveon just emailed all their members to choose their priorities for the Democratic Congress. Non-members can also participate here: http://pol.moveon.org/mandateforchange/survey2/index.html

We urge everyone to persuade Moveon to add impeachment to their priorities through a write-in campaign for "Impeach Bush and Cheney". You can write-in next to these questions:

* What is the most important message you have for the new Congress?
* Are there other issues that are important to work on right away?
* What do you think MoveOn should do next?

If you think "Impeach Bush and Cheney" is the right answer to all 3 questions, write it in!

Forward this message to everyone you know!

In the GOP we Trust

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

Today's column is written primarily for the benefit of my fellow Christians and pastors. More than 31 years as a minister of the Gospel qualifies me to broach this subject. We Christians profess to trust in God. We preachers instruct people to trust in God. Furthermore, "In God We Trust" has been our national motto ever since the passengers of the Mayflower sewed the saying into the sail of their ship. However.....

Schlaraffenland in Bürgerhand.

Steeple might be phone mast

By Paul Holden

A mobile phone company plans to turn a church spire into a phone mast.

But the suggestion has sparked protests from people living near St Mary's Church in Goring, Worthing.

Hampshire company QS4 said in a letter to residents that the scheme was the "preferred local option".

John Horsey, church relationship manager of QS4, wrote: "The installation might well reduce the number of aerials required locally."

But Simon Barwick, of Ilex Way, said: "We are totally against this and aim to fight it, not only because we live right next to the church but we are thinking of all the children and adults who live in the area near to the church and who use the church and church hall everyday.

"According to the letter the church spire is the preferred local option'. No it is not. I don't know anyone with a mobile who has a signal problem around here."

Mr Horsey said: "Mobile phone companies are seeking to improve reception for mobile phone users and to provide the new 3G services.

"The installation would be managed and built by QS4, which has a thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the industry.

Safety

"They are committed to the highest standards of health and safety and respect for the life and mission of the church.

"It is likely that one installation inside the church would do the job of several lower masts sited more conspicuously around the neighbourhood.

"Base stations are already installed in several churches around the country without any problems.

"The installation would have no visual effect on the neighbourhood, with the antennae inside the spire.

"The equipment cabinets would be either within the spire or discreetly located close to the spire."

The Rev Andrew Tremlett, vicar of Goring, said: "We are at a very early stage of the proposal. We have taken the initiative and tried to find out people's views.

"Obviously there will be those for and against.

"I understand that people will have concerns but millions of people are using mobile phones every day.

"The income from it is not huge, about £5,000 a year, about three or four per cent of our income. It would certainly help but it is not a make or break situation."

Final approval for the scheme would have to be given by the Diocese of Chichester.

People are being asked to submit their comments by December 4.

St Mary's dates back to the 12th century although most of the existing church was built in 1837.

Worthing Borough Council said it had not yet received an application.

MOTHER OF ALL PURPOSE-DRIVEN DECEPTIONS

by Berit Kjos

Most of these mighty elites have chosen to live in the shadow of the mainstream media they control. Not so Rick Warren. Yet his global ambitions and magnetic leadership skills would serve them well, and Warren knows it. "Billions of people suffer each day from problems so big no government can solve them," Warren told the cheering crowd at Los Angeles' Angel Stadium back in 2005. "The only thing big enough to solve the problems of spiritual emptiness, selfish leadership, poverty, disease, and ignorance is the network of millions of churches all around the world.".....

10 Hz flicker improves recognition memory in older people?

10 Hz flicker improves recognition memory in older people.

* Williams J, * Ramaswamy D, * Oulhaj A. *
OPTIMA, Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, OX2 6HE, UK. Jonathan.Williams@pharm.ox.ac.uk

BACKGROUND: 10 Hz electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha rhythms correlate with memory performance. Alpha and memory decline in older people. We wished to test if alpha-like EEG activity contributes to memory formation. Flicker can elicit alpha-like EEG activity. We tested if alpha-frequency flicker enhances memory in older people. Pariticpants aged 67-92 identified short words that followed 1 s of flicker at 9.0 Hz, 9.5 Hz, 10.0 Hz, 10.2 Hz, 10.5 Hz, 11.0 Hz, 11.5 Hz or 500 Hz. A few minutes later, we tested participants' recognition of the words (without flicker). RESULTS: Flicker frequencies close to 10 Hz (9.5-11.0 Hz) facilitated the identification of the test words in older participants. The same flicker frequencies increased recognition of the words more than other frequencies (9.0 Hz, 11.5 Hz and 500 Hz), irrespective of age. CONCLUSION: The frequency-specificity of flicker's effects in our participants paralleled the power spectrum of EEG alpha in the general population. This indicates that alpha-like EEG activity may subserve memory processes. Flicker may be able to help memory problems in older people.

Comment:

One can't help but wonder if a 10 hz flicker improves recognition memory WHY can't anyone prove other frequencies/oscillations/pulsations, etc. can actually cause harm? We know the answer, of course -- THEY don't want to acknowledge that which causes serious adverse health effects but rather, acknowledge only "biological effects" which are claimed to be meaningless!!! How much longer do scientists think they can continue to report therapies, etc. without admitting there are limits beyond which adverse health effects definitely occur?

School of the Americas Opponents Seek New Vote

A Report by Rebecca MacNeice

Opponents of the School of the Americas think that with the new make-up of Congress, they might have the votes to shut down the controversial training center for foreign military officers. Last weekend, thousands of protesters returned to Fort Benning, Georgia, for the 17th consecutive year to call for the closure of the school, whose training manuals advocate torture, extortion and execution. Rebecca MacNeice was there and filed this report for Truthout.

Deja Vu in Florida

"One of the great hazards of the way electronic voting has been introduced in the United States is that it could end up undermining democracy by producing unreliable election results that cannot be truly audited or corrected. This month, that nightmare became a reality," write the editors of the New York Times. "Voting machines in a Congressional race in Florida - where else? - may have swallowed about 18,000 votes, far more than the nominal winner's razor-thin margin of victory. Because those votes were in the loser's strongest county, if there was a computer glitch it probably changed the outcome of the race."

US v. Bush, et al.

William Fisher writes: "The scene is a Federal Grand Jury room. There, impaneled ordinary citizens listen intently as a veteran federal prosecutor asks them to return an indictment unique in American history. The charge is Conspiracy to Defraud the United States. And the defendants are President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, outgoing defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and former secretary of state Colin Powell."

Ferocity of Iraq Attacks Leaves US Troops Helpless

More than 3 years after President George W. Bush launched an invasion of Iraq, which his supporters proclaimed would be a "cakewalk," American troops were engulfed in a wave of sectarian bloodletting yesterday that threatens to destroy the Iraqi government and may jeopardize a crisis summit this week with Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister.

The Long March of American Militarism

Chris Floyd writes: "There is a general misconception that the US military has always turned out plans like these to cover almost every possible contingency, every country; thus you're bound to run across off-the-wall scenarios, such as an invasion of Canada, that would never be implemented. But this is just a myth. In fact, war plans at this level of detail are never drawn up unless there are very serious policy considerations behind them. For example, the now-advanced plans for an airstrike on Iran are not simply contingency exercises churned out by Pentagon analysts, they were ordered directly by George W. Bush, as were the pre-war plans for the Iraq invasion."

Cheney 's Quest to Expand Presidential Powers

Cheney bypassed acts of Congress as defense secretary in the first Bush administration. And his office has been the driving force behind the current administration's hoarding of secrets, its efforts to impose greater political control over career officials, and its defiance of a law requiring the government to obtain warrants when wiretapping Americans. Cheney's staff has also been behind President Bush's record number of signing statements asserting his right to disregard laws.

Lawmakers Lose Patience With Iraq Government

"It is not too late. The United States can still extricate itself honorably from an impending disaster in Iraq," Republican Senator Chuck Hagel of Nebraska said in urging for a planned withdrawal of US troops. US-Hauptquartier EUCOM: Verschleppungen nach Guantanamo angeblich auch in Stuttgart

27.11.06

Waxman Has Bush Administration in Sights

Congressman Henry Waxman has spent the last six years waging a guerrilla campaign against the White House and its corporate allies, launching searing investigations into everything from military contracts to Medicare prices from his perch on the Government Reform Committee. In January, Waxman becomes committee chairman - and thus the lead Congressional hound of an administration many Democrats feel has blundered badly as it expanded the power of the executive branch.

After seeing the video showing the cruelty by the personnel of the Animal Pound in Mexico, I add my voice of support to the declaration of the APAs, which urges the Mexican Government to stop all the cruel killing of domestic animals and to implement massive and free/low cost spay and neuter campaigns, as the only ethical and effective method to control the population of domestic animals.

Capitalism going crazy

CounterPunch
by Gabriel Kolko

11/26/06

The failure of socialist theory is much more than matched by the failure of capitalism because the latter has the entire responsibility for keeping the status quo functioning-and it has no intellectual basis for doing so. The crisis that exists is that capitalism has reached a most dangerous stage in destructiveness -- and no opposition to it exists. This malaise involves foreign affairs and domestic affairs -- vast greed at home and adventure overseas. If the foreign policy aspects are largely American-originated, the rest of the world tolerates or sometimes collaborates with it. Its downfall is inevitable, perhaps imminent. The chaos that exists will exist in a void. No powerful force exists to challenge, much less replace it, and therefore it will continue to exist -- but at immense and growing human cost. Alternative visions are, for the moment at least, mostly cranky...

Beware the lure of "phased withdrawal"

NewsDay
by Carolyn Eisenberg

11/26/06

Our pugnacious president visited Vietnam last week and found the lesson for Iraq: 'We'll succeed unless we quit.' In this reading of history, the United States was defeated in Vietnam because of a failure of will. If George W. Bush has his way, this won't happen again. U.S. troops are staying in Iraq. In his rigidity, Bush sounds eerily like President Lyndon Johnson, who could not acknowledge until too late his Vietnam policy was in shambles. But in the aftermath of the midterm elections, the calls for 'phased withdrawal' -- coming out of Congress, the Pentagon and the leaky Iraq Study Group -- evoke errors of the Nixon years...

War weariness is the prevailing public sentiment in the third stage of a major U.S. neo-imperialist war

Independent Institute
by Robert Higgs

11/26/06

War weariness is the prevailing public sentiment in the third stage of a major U.S. neo-imperialist war. In this prolonged stage, most people have grown tired of the war. They have surrendered their prior illusions about the glorious outcomes it was supposed to bring. They have come to understand that for them it is worse than pointless, that its costs have been real and its benefits a chimera, and that it seems likely to damage them further as it continues. Yet the war goes on and on, with no end in sight. We are now well into this stage of the war in Iraq...

Long stints in Iraq fracture families

MSNBC

11/26/06

As a gray dawn broke, hundreds of 3rd Infantry Division soldiers gathered on a Georgia marching ground this month and listened to a long list of names of fallen comrades. Taps rose mournfully above rows of young redbud trees planted for each of the division's 317 soldiers who have died in Iraq. Col. John Charlton, commander of the division's 1st Brigade, which next month begins its third Iraq tour in four years, stepped forward. 'Be thankful for your families, your health, and for every day that you're alive,' he advised...

Hagel: U.S. should pullout of "mismanaged" Iraq

CNN

11/26/06

A leading Republican senator called Sunday for American troops to begin withdrawing from Iraq, declaring that a U.S. pullout is needed to head off 'impending disaster' in the nearly 4-year-old war. 'There will be no victory or defeat for the United States in Iraq,' Sen. Chuck Hagel wrote in Sunday's edition of The Washington Post. Instead, he said, President Bush should use the upcoming report from a bipartisan panel led by former Secretary of State James Baker to begin laying the groundwork for a 'phased withdrawal' of U.S. troops...

Canada discards presumption of innocence

Calgary Sun [Canada]

11/24/06

Innocent until proven guilty will no longer apply to people charged with serious gun crimes, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced yesterday. The Tory PM, flanked by Premier Dalton McGuinty and Toronto Mayor David Miller, said anyone charged with attempted murder, armed robbery, sexual assault with a weapon, kidnapping and extortion while using a gun will have to make the case for their freedom under proposed bail rules. The Criminal Code rules, as they exist now, force the Crown to offer up evidence on why the accused should not be granted bail. 'This is unacceptable,' Harper said. 'Our legislation will reverse the onus so that people charged with serious gun crimes will have to demonstrate to the courts why they should not stay in custody until their trial'...

Wartime Sacrifices

Arlen Parsa writes: "Never before in American history has such a costly war been fought with so little immediate sacrifice asked of all Americans. Less than one year into his first term, President Bush made clear the terms of his war: every other country was either with us, or against us... and that America is once again a participant in a grand 'struggle for civilization.' This rhetoric should come as no surprise considering that the commander-in-chief has already likened himself to other wartime leaders such as Winston Churchill and compared his 'War on Terror' to World War II. Yet, for such a war with so much in the balance, our leaders have asked surprisingly little of us."

Sunni Leader: Iraq Violence May Spread Through Middle East

Iraq's Shiite prime minister, struggling to prevent sectarian violence from sending Iraq into full-fledged civil war, is facing strong criticism from top Shiite and Sunni Arab leaders alike as he prepares for a summit with President Bush next week. On Saturday, a prominent Sunni religious leader warned that Iraq's escalating sectarian violence will spread throughout the Middle East unless the international community withdraws support for Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki 's government.

A Matter of Definition: What Makes a Civil War, and Who Declares It So?

"Is Iraq in a civil war?" asks Edward Wong. "Though the Bush administration continues to insist that it is not, a growing number of American and Iraqi scholars, leaders and policy analysts say the fighting in Iraq meets the standard definition of civil war. The common scholarly definition has two main criteria. The first says that the warring groups must be from the same country and fighting for control of the political center, control over a separatist state or to force a major change in policy. The second says that at least 1,000 people must have been killed in total, with at least 100 from each side."

US dollar 'will keep falling

The US dollar has reached a 'tipping point' as foreign exchange markets wake up to the threat that the Federal Reserve will have to slash interest rates in the new year to stave off recession, analysts say. After a sharp sell-off on Friday took the greenback to 18-month lows against the euro, and pushed the pound to $1.93, economists warned that there was worse to come for the US currency.

The Uses of History and the War on Terrorism

By Howard Zinn

Whether you call yourself a totalitarian state or you call yourself a democracy, it works the same way, and that is, the leaders of the country are able to cajole or coerce and entice the people into war by scaring them, telling them they’re in danger, and threatening them and coercing them, that if they don’t go along, they will be considered unpatriotic.

America’s moment in the Middle East is about to end

By Mike Whitney

There are no “accidents” in Middle East politics. This week’s assassination of Lebanese Industry Minister, Pierre Gemayel can only be understood in the context of the ongoing struggle between the competing political forces in the region. Presently, the United States is the big loser in this regard due to its failed campaign in Iraq.

Dialectics, Rockefellers and Population Control

Part 1

by Dennis Cuddy, Ph.D.

As I have mentioned many times before, the power elite's favorite means of controlling people is the dialectical process. This often involves creating a "threat" to a particular population. For example, the terrorist threat after 9/11 caused Americans to be willing to give up certain of their freedoms which they had been unwilling to give up before 9/11.....

Part 4

by Dennis Cuddy, Ph.D.

President Bush has also long supported a Free Trade Area of the Americas, and if you look at the FTAA website, you can see its purpose is to "unite the economies of the Americas into a single free trade area." Once all the nations of the Americas have their economies united, it will be impossible for the U.S. not to be effected by economic problems in any Latin American nation. This will mean American independence will be negatively impacted......
