A Detainee's Story: The Man Who Has Been to America

Why should Geneva Convention protections be applied to Guantanamo detainees? One innocent man's journey through the legal black hole of the war on terror - four prisons, three countries, two years - may be the best argument yet.

Why Retired Military Brass Don't Want Torture

Firsthand combat experiences compel old guard to attack Bush's "alternative interrogation." For all 43 retired generals and admirals, it was a combination of moral outrage and deep disgust over President Bush's proposed legislation on interrogating terrorist suspects that propelled them into unfamiliar territory. "None of us feels comfortable speaking out publicly," said Rear Adm. John D. Hutson (retired).

Study of Iraq War and Terror Stirs Strong Political Response

Democratic lawmakers, responding to an intelligence report that found that the Iraq war has invigorated Islamic radicalism and worsened the global terrorist threat, said the assessment by American spy agencies demonstrated that the Bush administration needed to devise a new strategy for its handling of the war.

Days before the Bush administration put Canadian citizen Maher Arar on a plane for Syria, Canadian law enforcement officials advised their US counterparts that evidence of terrorist links by Arar was not definitive.

How to Stop The New World Order

by Joan Veon

For the last 13 years as I have covered global meetings and studied the ever shifting economic and political structure of this New World Order of ours, I have been very saddened to realize that we the people have absolutely no voice in government. Over and over again, the president passes executive orders that bypass Congress and if that was not bad enough, our elected representatives have determined that “they know better than you and me.” Most of the change that is occurring today is because elected officials have decided that we the people are not smart enough to understand and we are being bypassed by them.....

Democracy in the Muslim world

In recent weeks, President Bush has delivered a series of major speeches outlining his strategy against terrorism. We have come a long way from the nebulous rhetoric of the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. The foe is no longer defined as 'terror,' which is simply a tool used by a well-defined adversary. ... The obvious cure to the problem is tackling radical Islam, the ideology that motivates terrorists. But the administration believes firmly -- almost blindly -- that democracy is the right medicine. According to the report, democracy 'diminishes the underlying conditions terrorists seek to exploit.' ... Yet democracy does not always have these healing powers. ... The real Islamic threat

The greatest danger in the world today is not the threat from Islam, but the threat to Islam. In the long war against terror, nations with primarily Muslim populations have suffered the most loses -- murder, instability, economic malaise and the degradation of religious faith. And it is all the fault of the terrorists who claim to be their champions. On 9/11 and many times since, terrorists have tried attacking the West. But they've found the West isn't an easy target. ... In turn, the terrorists did what they have historically done: attacked the weak and avoided the strong. And the weak are in the terrorists' own back yard. ... But first, a reminder about the stakes of the border war. Homeland security is an international concern; ask any Israeli who supports building a wall for self-protection...

In December, Congress passed the Detainee Treatment Act -- a measure that sharply limited judicial jurisdiction to hear detainee challenges. Tell Congress Torture is Un-American!

ACTION PAGE: http://www.usalone.com/criscenzo/pnum507.php

What is the problem with being called an "obstructionist"?!! Something as offensive as the bill rubberstamping Bush to torture in our name must be stopped. It MUST be obstructed. And our senators with any conscience left must be made to understand that this is their JOB, to filibuster if necessary!

Last month I joined a group of leading peace activists in meetings with Iraqi leaders in Amman, Jordan. One of the most disturbing things I learned about was how Iraqi detainees are being routinely tortured.

Victims of Abu Ghraib told us about the unspeakable things that were being done in our name, as Americans, to our fellow human beings. In every case these victims had not been charged with a crime and were eventually released because they were innocent!

Americans were so upset that Saddam Hussein had tortured his own people that many of them thought that invading Iraq was actually a mission of mercy! Now we find out that it is America that is torturing innocent Iraqi people and our President wants permission to continue doing it!

George Bush is bullying Congress to RETROACTIVELY remove references from the Geneva Convention to "outrages upon personal dignity . . . " These are exactly the kind of barbaric abuses I learned about while I was in Jordan! Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3eLEYSnaq4 to see my video about this meeting.

Not my America!

Americans don't support torture for ANY reason. There is a line in the sand that we will not cross -- that we CANNOT cross and still consider ourselves civilized people. Intelligence gained from torture is worthless! Torture fuels the fire of hatred that is behind terrorism. But more than that, torture is immoral. And we don't want OUR America to have any part of it.

Take Action Now! Go to http://www.usalone.com/criscenzo/pnum507.php to tell Congress to uphold the Supreme Court decision that provides for fair trials and internationally recognized standards for care and treatment of people in detention.

My opponent, Darrell Issa, has good reason to look the other way on torture: His #1 contributor for this election and the last, is Titan, one of two contractors implicated in the Abu Ghraib prison torture scandal. Despite their connection with contracted torture, Titan's contract was recently renewed. Your contribution to my grassroots campaign will send a strong and clear message that torture is unacceptable.

Please go to http://www.usalone.com/criscenzo/donations2.php to contribute to my campaign, because I will NEVER take money from anyone involved in human rights abuses. Period!

The one click form below will send your personal message to all your government representatives selected below, with the subject "Uphold international standards for treatment of detainees." When it comes to the war in Iraq, the New York Times reports, "There is very little clear talk about what to do, beyond vague recommendations for staying the course or long-term timetables for withdrawal. That is because politicians running for election want to deliver good news, and there is nothing about Iraq - including withdrawal scenarios - that is anything but ominous."

Danger lurking within: Canadians shocked by results of blood tests

The more toxins that enter a human body, the more that his or her cells will utilize nutrients necessary for detoxification. If suboptimal nutrition becomes transiently or permanently chronic, toxin-induced adverse effects are likely. Illnesses including but not limited to diarrhea can exacerbate nutrient depletion, thereby increasing likelihood of toxin-induced injury. Since numerous intra-body toxins are now a ubiquitous reality, the deliberate injecting of toxins is all the more risky.

In the last 50 years, science has invented thousands of chemicals to do everything from withstanding fire and resisting stains to keeping your breakfast eggs from sticking to the pan. But what makes your life easier may end up making your life shorter --- made to be indestructible, these chemicals are showing up in alarming numbers in our bodies, and wreaking havoc on key biological systems. In a special series over the next few Sundays, Sun Media investigates Canada's toxic conundrum./

For some, ignorance is bliss. But not for a small group of Canadians, who swallowed their fears and had their blood tested to find out just how many environmental toxins are flowing through their veins.

The study, conducted on behalf of the national environmental group Environmental Defence, looked for specific chemicals in 11 adults across the country last year, and more recently, tested parents and children in five Canadian families.

Amy Robertson and her kids, Johanna, 15 and Satchel, 13, rolled up their sleeves for the test, hoping their healthy lifestyle had spared them a few of the pollutants --- the kids grew up on an organic farm in B.C.'s Fraser Valley before settling in Vancouver last year.

But they would have no such luck. Thirty-one pollutants out of 68 were detected in Amy's blood. Her 15-year-old daughter Johanna showed 32 in her sample, and her son, Satchel, 13, was polluted with 29 out of the 68 --- the second-highest level detected in a child in the study.

"I was pretty shocked. We sat down and had a weeping session after the results came in, but we need to speak out on this issue because it's only getting worse," Amy told Sun Media.

Of particular concern: although the industrial chemicals known as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were banned in Canada nearly 15 years before Johanna and Satchel were born, both Robertson kids had PCB levels higher than their mom, and were contaminated with PCBs that weren't present in Amy at all.

"What we found is that most people had most of the pollutants we tested for and in most cases, the kids had higher levels than their parents, which is surprising and incredibly worrisome," says Rick Smith, executive director of Environmental Defence.

"These chemicals are things that are in products in our kitchen, our upholstery, new cars ... The reality is that it's a much more insidious, invisible problem."

Environmental Defence is also testing blood from Liberal environment critic John Godfrey, Environment Minister Rona Ambrose, Health Minster Tony Clement and NDP leader Jack Layton. Results will be posted at http:// www.toxicnation.ca

Officials Wary of Electronic Voting Machines

By IAN URBINA

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/24/us/politics/24voting.html

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 — A growing number of state and local officials are getting cold feet about electronic voting technology, and many are making last-minute efforts to limit or reverse the rollout of new machines in the November elections.

Less than two months before voters head to the polls, Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. of Maryland this week became the most recent official to raise concerns publicly. Mr. Ehrlich, a Republican, said he lacked confidence in the state’s new $106 million electronic voting system and suggested a return to paper ballots.

Dozens of states have adopted electronic voting technology to comply with federal legislation in 2002 intended to phase out old-fashioned lever and punch-card machines after the “hanging chads” confusion of the
2000 presidential election.

But some election officials and voting experts say they fear that the new technology may have only swapped old problems for newer, more complicated ones. Their concerns became more urgent after widespread problems with the new technology were reported this year in primaries in Ohio, Arkansas, Illinois, Maryland and elsewhere.

This year, about one-third of all precincts nationwide are using the electronic voting technology for the first time, raising the chance of problems at the polls as workers struggle to adjust to the new system.

“I think there is good reason for concern headed into the midterm elections,” said Richard F. Celeste, a Democrat and former Ohio governor who was co-chairman of a study of new machines for the National Research Council with Richard L. Thornburgh, a Republican and former governor of Pennsylvania.

“You have to train the poll workers,” Mr. Celeste said, “especially since many of them are of a generation for whom this technology is a particular challenge. You need to have plans in place to relocate voters to another precinct if machines don’t work, and I just don’t know whether these steps have been taken.”

Paperless touch-screen machines have been the biggest source of consternation, and with about 40 percent of registered voters nationally expected to cast their ballots on these machines in the midterm elections, many local officials fear that the lack of a paper trail will leave no way to verify votes in case of fraud or computer failure.

As a result, states are scrambling to make last-minute fixes before the technology has its biggest test in November, when voter turnout will be higher than in the primaries, many races will be close and the threat of litigation will be ever-present.

“We have the real chance of recounts in the coming elections, and if you have differences between the paper trail and the electronic record, which number prevails?” said Richard L. Hasen, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and the author of the Election Law blog, www.electionlawblog.org.

Professor Hasen found that election challenges filed in court grew to
361 in 2004, up from 197 in 2000. “What you have coming up is the intersection of new technology and an unclear legal regime,” he said.

Like Mr. Ehrlich, other state officials have decided on a late-hour change of course. In January, Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico decided to reverse plans to use the touch-screen machines, opting instead to return to paper ballots with optical scanners. Last month, the Connecticut secretary of state, Susan Bysiewicz, decided to do the same.

“I didn’t want my state to continue being an embarrassment like Ohio and Florida every four years,” said Mr. Richardson, a Democrat, adding, “I also thought we needed to restore voter confidence, and that wasn’t going to happen with the touch-screen machines.”

In Pennsylvania, a state senator introduced a bill last week that would require every precinct to provide voters with the option to use paper ballots, which would involve printing extra absentee ballots and having them on site. A similar measure is being considered on the federal level.

In the last year or so, at least 27 states have adopted measures requiring a paper trail, which has often involved replacing paperless touch-screen machines with ones that have a printer attached.

But even the systems backed up by paper have problems. In a study released this month, the nonpartisan Election Science Institute found that about 10 percent of the paper ballots sampled from the May primary in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, were uncountable because printers had jammed and poll workers had loaded the paper in backward.

Lawsuits have been filed in Colorado, Arizona, California, Pennsylvania and Georgia seeking to prohibit the use of touch-screen machines.

Deborah L. Markowitz, the Vermont secretary of state and the president of the National Association of Secretaries of State, said that while there might be some problems in November, she expected them to be limited and isolated.

“The real story of the recent primary races was how few problems there were, considering how new this technology is,” said Ms. Markowitz, a Democrat. “The failures we did see, like in Maryland, Ohio and Missouri, were small and most often from poll workers not being prepared.”

Many states have installed the machines in the past year because of a federal deadline. If states wanted to take advantage of federal incentives offered by the Help America Vote Act, they had to upgrade their voting machines by 2006.

In the primary last week in Maryland, several counties reported machine-related problems, including computers that misidentified the party affiliations of voters, electronic voter registration lists that froze and voting-machine memory cards whose contents could not be electronically transmitted. In Montgomery County, election workers did not receive access cards to voting machines for the county’s 238 precincts on time, forcing as many as 12,000 voters to use provisional paper ballots until they ran out.

“We had a bad experience in the primary that led to very long lines, which means people get discouraged and leave the polls without voting,” said Governor Ehrlich, who is in a tight re-election race and has been accused by his critics of trying to use the voting issue to motivate his base. “We have hot races coming up in November and turnout will be high, so we can expect lines to be two or three times longer. If even a couple of these machines break down, we could be in serious trouble.”

Problems during primaries elsewhere have been equally severe.

In the Illinois primary in March, Cook County officials delayed the results of the county board elections for a week because of human and mechanical problems at hundreds of sites with new voting machines made by Sequoia Voting Systems.

In the April primary in Tarrant County, Tex., machines made by Hart InterCivic counted some ballots as many as six times, recording 100,000 more votes than were cast. The problem was attributed to programming errors, not hacking.

In the past year, the Government Accountability Office, the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University and the Congressional Research Service have released reports raising concerns about the security of electronic machines.

Advocates of the new technology dispute the conclusions.

“Many of these are exaggerated accusations by a handful of vocal activists,” said Mark Radke, director of marketing for Diebold Election Systems, one of the largest sellers of touch-screen machines. “But if you want to talk about fraud and tabulation error, the newer technology is far more accurate.”

Mr. Radke cited a study from the California Institute of Technology that found that between the 2000 election, when touch-screen machines were not used, and the 2004 election, when they were, there was a 40 percent reduction in voter error in Maryland, making the vote there the most accurate in the country.

“There is always the potential for human error,” Mr. Radke said, “but that is easily correctible.”

But critics say bugs and hackers could corrupt the machines.

A Princeton University study released this month on one of Diebold’s machines — a model that Diebold says it no longer uses — found that hackers could easily tamper with electronic voting machines by installing a virus to disable the machines and change the vote totals.

Mr. Radke dismissed the concerns about hackers and bugs as most often based on unrealistic scenarios.

“We don’t leave these machines sitting on a street corner,” he said. “But in one of these cases, they gave the hackers complete and unfettered access to the machines.”

Warren Stewart, legislative director for VoteTrustUSA, an advocacy group that has criticized electronic voting, said that after poll workers are trained to use the machines in the days before an election, many counties send the machines home with the workers. “That seems like pretty unfettered access to me,” Mr. Stewart said.

TELL CONGRESS NO ATTACK ON IRAN WITHOUT THEIR APPROVAL

ACTION PAGE: http://www.wrightforcongress.net/petitions/pnum513.php

CALL your members of Congress tollfree at 888-355-3588 or 800-828-0498

As the general election approaches, we hear more and more speculation about what the "October Surprise" will be THIS time. People wonder what vile political stunt will they pull to try to stampede people into voting diametrically against their own best interests yet again. This goes far beyond what used to be called "dirty tricks". Start another war and kill a hundred thousand people to crank up the fear level of the American people? They've done it before.

There are things that we know. We know that the Bush administration is determined to attack Iran, whether on false pretenses or not. Just as in the lead up to the invasion of Iraq, they are spreading lies about the threat of Iran's nuclear program, and the IAEA (who was right about Iraq) has already condemned them for it. Multiple reliable sources tell us that the final decision has been made and that the preliminary committed stages of the operation are already in progress. And even now there are reports of naval forces being moved into the area, as if that were something they could hide.

We also know that the administration is absolutely desperate. The towering infrastructure they have built of one whopping lie piled high on another is crashing down around their ears, and if they were to lose control of even one house of Congress, the investigations finally unleashed would certainly lead to war crimes prosecutions against each and every one of them. Would the Bush administration even hesitate to carpet bomb yet another country if they thought they could panic us into electing them again. We all know they would not.

When Bush and Cheney goaded Israel into launching a blitzkrieg on civilian targets in Lebanon, it was widely seen as a demo of what they had planned for Iran. They themselves framed it exactly that way with talk of Hezbollah being a proxy for their "masters" in Tehran. And as badly as the war in Lebanon turned out (not to mention Iraq), with massive world revulsion and plummeting support of the U.S among the Lebanese people, you would a think that a sane person would pause to reconsider replaying the same debacle on a monumentally larger scale in Iran.

But the Bush administration is not sane, they are criminally INSANE.

And worse yet, they have given every signal that they fully intend to use nuclear bunker busters in attacking Iran. They were hoping to blow up half the Nevada desert a couple months ago, with the transparent intent of testing how big the nuclear warheads would have to be to penetrate the underground facilities in Iran. And when that test was stopped, in large part by your protests, we would have hoped that would have impeded their plot. It did not.

Finally we know that if they were to commit such a crime against humanity as a nuclear first strike on Iran, it would happen with Congress out of session. That is why we must raise the loudest hue and cry starting immediately. We must have a Sense of Congress Resolution that there be NO attack on Iran without EXPRESS congressional approval. And we only have days to make it happen. We must preempt the next preemptive war before the cruise missiles start flying.

We must tell them we have had enough of the warmongers in the White House. All those who support this kind of leadership also deserve to face genocide charges in a court of law. The administration is out of control and American citizens better wake up to the facts. Please speak out now. It is not only the lives of your children that depend on it. YOUR life depends on it.
