Still want that gas-guzzling SUV? That $3 a gallon for gas is just the beginning and will soon sound cheap! Some of the damage form Katrina and Rita to Texas and New Orleans oil facilities has yet to be repaired, and now BP has to shut down a large part of production in Alaska.

This is on top of Peak Oil, meaning that the Saudi wells and most other oil fields are already runnign flat-out and cannot make up the difference.

There is yet another factor-Why those pieplines are rusting out. This implies that the oil is corrosive, loaded with sulfur. Rusting, like other chemical reactions, doubles or halves its speed with every ten degree change in temperature. This is why exhaust pipes on your car rust so fast.

It's very cold in Alaska, yet heavy iron pipes have rusted nearly through in just a few decades! Used as sewer pipes they could have lasted over a century. What does this mean? It means all this corrosive sulfure is still in the oil when its made into gas and diesel-contributing to urban smog!

It's not ozone, but sulfate particles in the air from oil and coal together with ozone create the infamous "smoky" look of polluted air. Usually its the ozone you feel burning in your lungs after about 15 minutes on the bike on a Code Red or Code Orange day, but sulfer dioxide can do this too.

Also included: A reminder that Peace, Pro-Earth, Pro-animal, and pro- housing (as in antigentrification) activists are all on the same team and must work together. Children and crayfish need the same thing-the right to grow up in peace!

As a Congressman, I will not shirk away from my oath of office. Saying that includes the inherent responsibility to hold the balance of powers within their Constitutional function. It has been determined that the Executive Branch has committed "high crimes and misdemeanors" in the public eye. Mitten in die Diskussion über verlängerte Laufzeiten deutscher Atomkraftwerke hinein und mitten in die Diskussion über die mögliche Renaissance der Atomkraft weltweit platzt die Meldung über einen ernsthaften Störfall in einem schwedischen Atomkraftwerk. Die ödp sieht sich dadurch in der Forderung nach einem schnellstmöglichen Atomausstieg bestätigt.

Ein Störfall, ausgelöst durch einen externen Kurschluss, führte dazu, dass die Bedienmannschaft 23 Minuten lang keine Kontrolle über den Reaktor hatte. Nur das Minimum der benötigten 2 Notstromaggregate sprang an, zwei weitere versagten. „Während des Störfalls waren also alle Sicherheitsreserven aufgebraucht – reines Glück hat damit eine Katastrophe verhindert“, so ödp-Stadtvorsitzender Martin Kraus. Ein kompletter Ausfall aller Notstromaggregate war in der Sicherheitsanalyse offensichtlich überhaupt nicht vorgesehen.

„Wir haben gerade vor wenigen Monaten der Reaktorkatastrophe von Tschernobyl gedacht. Tschernobyl hat uns mit unvorstellbarem Leid die Risiken der Atomkraft vor Augen geführt. Damals wurde die Schuld der unsicheren osteuropäischen Atomtechnik gegeben – jetzt hat aber Technik versagt, wie sie auch in deutschen Atomkraftwerken eingesetzt wird. Was mich nicht wundert, denn es gibt keine Technik, die nicht versagen kann. Atomkraftwerke dürfen aber nicht versagen. Es ist daher Zeit, nicht von der Verlängerung der Laufzeiten der deutschen Atomkraftwerke zu reden, sondern von einem beschleunigten Atomausstieg“, so Martin Kraus.

Viel Verzweiflung, Mutlosigkeit oder auch ohnmächtiger Wut, häufig verbunden mit Perspektivlosigkeit, stehe ich fast jeden Tag gegenüber. Insgesamt 14 Arbeitsgruppen aus sechs Ländern arbeiten in einem EU-Projekt, das klären soll, wie elektromagnetische, magnetische und Hochfrequenzstrahlung auf die Produktion von Proteinen in der Zelle und damit die Genexpression wirkt. "Nach ersten Ergebnissen wissen wir sicher, dass es unter Einfluss von Magnet- oder Hochfrequenzfeldern zu Schäden an der DNA kommt und dass Stressproteine produziert werden", betont Kolb. Doch ob wirklich Krebs entsteht, will der Biophysiker aus diesen Ergebnissen nicht schlussfolgern. "Das wäre Spekulation." Denn die Reparaturkräfte des Körpers könnten diese Schäden an der DNA offenbar beheben. Klar scheint vorerst nur eines: Sind Zellen bereits geschädigt, dann wird diese Schädigung durch den Einfluss der Strahlung nicht linear erhöht, sonders steigt um ein Vielfaches. Und trotz Reparatur des Körpers ist nicht auszuschließen, dass an einzelnen Zellen eine Restschädigung zurückbleibt, auch wenn die Zelle zunächst "normal" funktioniert.

"Wir werden jetzt versuchen, Nachweise für Strahlungseinflüsse auf der Funktionsebene der Zellen zu finden", sagt Prof. Kolb. Denn noch ist weder klar, wo genau in der Zelle die Strahlung trifft, noch wie groß eventuelle Restschäden in der Zellfunktion durch die Störung der DNA ist.

RESIDENTS who stood to lose £30,000 in a bitter battle over a phone mast outside their homes are celebrating after winning their two year battle.

T-Mobile has told residents it will be taking down the phone mast in Wycombe Road, Marlow, to the delight of 140 objectors, including Great Marlow School and councillors who were against it on health grounds. Residents even pulled £18,000 together to take the case to the High Court after the mast was originally approved by Wycombe District Council in October last year.

The decision was quashed by a consent order last year after legal arguments said the council had not consulted the school and even some of the grid references for alternative sites were wrong in T-Mobile's application. And following a recent rejection of a full planning application and appeal, T-Mobile is set to take the mast down today.

David Reynolds, 47, who headed the fight alongside wife, Alex, said: "We stood to lose around £30,000 if we lost the legal case because we would have had to pay the council's and T-Mobile's costs. I am delighted. It is a shame that it was put up in the first place. It took over a great deal of our lives."

Mr Reynolds, a father-of-three, said his family would have moved away had the mast remained. It is only 17 metres from his house and he says the health risks posed to children are still largely unknown.

Around £12,000 has been recovered from the case since lawyers quashed the original council decision.

Liz Jones, 34, a mother-of-two, had just moved into Wycombe Road in 2004 when she heard the mast was set to go up. She said: "After two years I never thought I would see the day. I'm looking forward to being able to come out of my house without seeing the mast there. They have to go somewhere but not in residential areas."

Mr Reynolds, an osteopath, called for all phone masts to now go through full planning applications instead of being dealt with under delegated powers.

He said residents were originally promised that the mast would be decided by the council's development control committee only for it to receive prior approval.

However, he praised the council's case officer who dealt with the recent application where it was rejected.

Mr Reynolds only chose to fight the mast after reading council public documents on the original decision. He said: "If I hadn't gone in and looked at this we would have been none the wiser."

Council spokesman Becky Wotherspoon said: "We are pleased to hear that the appeal by T-Mobile has been overturned and will be contacting them about the removal of the mast from this site."

T-Mobile were unavailable for comment as we went to press.

When contractors arrived to put mobile phone mast equipment on top of a church where protesters believe bats are nesting, leading objector Audrey Booth sat down in front of the lorry and told them: "Thou shalt not."

Convinced the engineers had not got the proper paper-work from English Nature to begin work, she refused to budge from the driveway of the United Reformed Church in Chapel Hill, Clayton West, Huddersfield.

Her lone stand on Saturday morning soon attracted a turnout of neighbours and local councillors, concerned about the possible health impact of the equipment being mounted on the three-storey building's chimney. When it became clear Mrs Booth, 55, of Church Lane, was not going to make way for the engineers' vehicles after a 90-minute stand off – and that a TV crew was on the way – the men left.

Defending her actions yesterday, Mrs Booth said: "I spoke to English Nature, who said I should ensure that the law was not being broken if I thought the bat colony from the church was in danger and to check if they had got the necessary permissions to work near the roost.

"They started up the lorry and began to unload the aerials so I plonked myself down. I have been here 30 years and seen the bats every summer. They flit about in the garden and I enjoy seeing them."

She believed the colony was established in the church, but had been unable to find it. However, the Rev Nick Percival, whose ministry includes the church, said it was the first he had heard of any bats nesting there and Mrs Booth had been tres-passing on church property.

He added: "There used to be some bats in the church house where the minister lived but I have spoken to people who have been here all their lives and they do not know of any bats in the church."

A number of the objectors have claimed the church did not consult residents about installing the equipment.

But Mr Percival said the church held an open meeting last October to which the protesters came. He said the phone company had contacted Kirklees Council about planning consent but had been advised it was not needed because the masts fell within permitted development.

It was not unusual for churches to provide space for mobile phone equipment and any income would be spent improving access to the building for the community, he said.

But bats or no bats, Mrs Booth's protest underlined householders' fears about having the equipment close to family homes. Neighbour Robert Leach, who took part in the protest, said he did not want his 19-month-old son and pregnant wife living near the aerials and dishes.

He added: "No one wants it there apart from the church who will get money for it and the phone company who want to put up a mast, which will also be an eyesore."

Kirklees local councillor Jim Dodds said he would contact the authority today about some planning concerns raised by the residents. He said the situation regarding the possible bat protection issues also needed to be clarified via English Nature.

No one from the phone company, Hutchinson 3G, was available to comment.

Gewerkschaften und Opposition fordern deutliche Anhebung

„Gewerkschaften, Basisorganisationen und die Demokratische Partei kämpfen in den USA für die erste Erhöhung des Mindestlohns seit 1997. Im Juni beschloss der US-Kongress erneut Steuersenkungen für die einkommenstärksten zehn Prozent der Gesellschaft. Für den demokratischen Senator Edward Kennedy war dies ein weiterer Beweis, dass die Bush-Regierung »nur für diejenigen arbeitet, die wirtschaftlich oben stehen. Die Amerikaner arbeiten härter denn je, und die Produktivität steigt. Doch Millionen hart arbeitender Frauen und Männer kriegen nicht ihren fairen Anteil daran.« Damit meinte Kennedy insbesondere die über 14 Millionen Werktätige, die von einer Erhöhung des zuletzt 1997 gestiegenen Mindestlohns von 5,15 Dollar profitieren würden. Die Demokraten und andere wollen ihn auf 7,25 Dollar pro Stunde anheben. Für den Gewerkschaftsdachverband AFL-CIO heißt es daher: »Amerika braucht eine Lohnerhöhung.« Seit Monaten führt er eine Mindestlohnkampagne durch. Nicht jede Erhöhung ist eine Erhöhung

Ross Eisenbrey schildert in seinem (englischen) Artikel „When is a Raise Not a Raise?”, erschienen im Online-Magazin CounterPunch am 01.08.2006, ein kleines Problem, welches bei der aktuellen Mindestlohndebatte nun auftaucht. Es sind die Trinkgelder (tips) von denen bekanntermaßen in Amerika viele Berufsgruppen leben müssen: Taxi-Fahrer, Kellner, Portiers… Diese sollen nach dem Beschuss des Repräsentantenhauses in einigen Bundesstaaten der USA nun auf den aktuellen Mindestlohn angerechnet werden und zwar in der Form, dass den sogenannten „tipped Employees“ (Arbeitern die mehr als 30 $ Trinkgeld pro Monat bekommen) nur noch der absolute Mindestlohn von 5,15 $ zusteht. Das bedeutet z.B., dass ein Arbeiter, dem in seinem Staat ein bisher ein Mindestlohn von 7,63 $ zustand und der durchschnittlich noch 3, 02 $ Trinkgeld pro Stunde bekam, also reell 10,65 $ verdiente, jetzt nur noch 2,13 pro Stunde verdient (plus 3,02 $ Trinkgeld = 5,15 $). http://www.counterpunch.org/eisenbray08012006.html

Am Samstag Nachmittag wird Zeit genug sein, dass sich die Mitglieder des Bundesverbandes sowie weitere, die an der Arbeitsgemeinschaft zur Minimierung elektromagnetischer Felder interessiert sind, zu einer Diskussion zusammensetzen. Eventuell wird auch Dr. George Carlo zu einem Gespräch zur Verfügung stehen.

Unter der Überschrift "Parasiten auf der Überholspur" veröffentlichte die Süddeutsche Zeitung in ihrer Ausgabe vom 5./6. August einen Artikel von Tina Bauer über die "Erfolge" des Einsatzes gentechnisch veränderter Baumwolle in China. Auf der Internetseite von derStandard.at/Wissenschaft erschien am gleichen Tag ein Artikel zum gleichen Thema. Hierzu erklärt Hajo Zeller, umweltpolitischer Sprecher DIE LINKE. Hessen:

Wieder einmal zeigt sich: Die Gefahren der Grünen Gentechnik für Mensch und Umwelt sind nicht abschätzbar. Anfänglichen, betriebswirtschaftlichen Erfolgen beim Einsatz von gentechnisch verändertem Saatgut stehen langfristig nicht kalkulierbare Risiken gegenüber. Das Wissenschaftsmagazin "Nature" berichtet über US-amerikanische Studien zum Einsatz von gentechnisch veränderten Baumwollpflanzen in China. Der "Hauptschädling", die Rosarote Baumwollkapselraupe, konnte zwar in Schach gehalten werden, andere so genannte Schädlinge "laufen dafür Amok", wie die US-Forscher herausgefunden haben. Der Einsatz von Pestiziden hat die ursprüngliche Höhe wieder erreicht, und das Saatgut muss nach wie vor teuer bezahlt werden. Hajo Zeller sagt: "Die Aussage von Prof. Dr. Methling, stellvertretender Ministerpräsidenten und Umweltminister in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und stellvertretender Vorsitzender der DIE LINKE. hat nach wie vor Gültigkeit. Er schrieb im Vorwort der von Sabine Vogt verfassten Publikation der ökologischen Plattform der Linkspartei "Fragen und Antworten zur Grünen Gentechnik in der Landwirtschaft und Lebensmittelherstellung": ‚Wir sind uns grundsätzlich einig darüber, dass die Anwendung der "Grünen Gentechnik" in der Landwirtschaft weder notwendig noch wünschenswert ist. Die Natur kann nicht beliebig manipuliert oder gentechnisch konstruiert werden. Wie bei allen Risikotechnologien, werden sich auch bei der Gentechnik die Nebenwirkungen erst mittel- und langfristig manifestieren. Darüber hinaus ist sie ein Intensivierungsfaktor, der die Abhängigkeit des Landwirtes von Saatgutkonzernen noch weiter erhöhen wird.' Wohl wahr." Hajo Zeller fährt fort: "Die Berichte zeigen, dass die Grüne Gentechnik keineswegs, wie immer wieder von den Saatgutkonzernen und ihren bezahlten Gutachtern und willfährigen "Wissenschaftlern" behauptet, den Menschen dient. Unter dem Deckmantel den Hunger in der Welt bekämpfen zu wollen, wird schlicht und ergreifend das kapitalistische Prinzip exekutiert. Eingesetztes Geld soll möglichst schnell immer mehr Geld produzieren. Alles andere ist Rhetorik. Die vereinigte Linke in Hessen und in der Bundesrepublik wird sich diesem Vorhaben widersetzenmit solidarischen Grüßen hajo zeller
