The Biggest Secret: the meaning of the recent NSA spying scandal

Thomas Powers explores the meaning of the recent NSA spying scandal and the abject failure of Congress (or the American public) to rein in this administration. Put plainly, the President decided to attack Iraq, he brushed caution and objection aside, and Congress, the press, and the people, with very few exceptions, stepped back out of the way and let him do it.

Tale of Two Presidents

Five difficult years in office have left the White House straining under the weight of its own contradictions. That was abundantly clear in the State of the Union address. The State of the Union was a tale of two presidents. One was gracious about his opponents, seeking common ground for the sake of the nation's future. The other accused his critics of being isolationists, pacifists, protectionists and unpatriotic.

Bush Stretches to Defend Surveillance

President Bush received a roaring ovation Tuesday for his prime-time defense of wiretapping phone calls without warrants. But Bush's explanation relied on assumptions that have been widely questioned by experts who say the president offers a debatable interpretation of history.

Last Night's State of the Union: Global Warming Still Not a Priority

Last night, President Bush talked about a new energy economy. But when you completely ignore the biggest challenge of all -- global warming -- your plans will never measure up.

Using government subsidies for favored energy programs is thinking small. Instead, America needs a bold plan to limit global warming pollution and unleash the market to create a new energy economy.

The U.S. must pass a market-based cap on global warming pollution as the first meaningful step to reduce our emissions and spur private sector investment in the new energy technologies the president supports.

We are fully engaged at every level to see that 2006 is a year of real action. Our campaign activities include:

- Launching a new public education campaign. In the coming weeks, you will get an inside look at our most ambitious national public messaging campaign to date. The campaign will include television, radio, print and online ads and a new website to help us reach millions with our message.

- Strengthening on-the-ground grassroots organizing. In key states where we hope to win over the support of swing senators, we have built statewide outreach and education campaigns. These efforts have focused on building coalitions with industries and citizen groups most at risk as global warming changes our world.

- Getting the science right. Last year, we hired Bill Chameides, one of the world's foremost experts in atmospheric science, to lead our team of global warming scientists. We will use this expertise to make sure we are promoting the most effective policies.

With your continued support, we are doing all that can be done to make 2006 the year of historic action in the fight to stop global warming. No environmental threat is more urgent.

Thank you for being part of this crucial effort to reduce global warming.

Sincerely,
Steve Cochran

RESIDENTS' anger at phone mast plans

By Nicolette Allen

ANGRY residents living near the site of a proposed mobile phone mast are concerned about the number of masts cropping up all over Worcester.

O2 UK is planning to install a 17.5 metre pole at the Hylton Road Industrial Estate, Hylton road and another 15 metre high monopole in the residential area of Oldbury Road, St Johns, between Ambrose Close and Brookside Road.

Gordon and Pam Roberts from Ambrose Close said they were very concerned about the installation of a new mast.

"We don't know enough about the dangers of these phone masts to have them put up all over the place," said Mrs Roberts.

"The phone company could have chosen to install the mast in the countryside somewhere, rather than here in a residential area of a city."

City council planning officer Paul O'Connor said the council had received letters of complaint and rejection from people living in the Oldbury Road area.

"These rejections are mainly on the basis of concern about health issues," he said.

"However, from a health perspective the installation satisfies all international standards of safety and in terms of appearance, the mast is designed to have as little overall impact on the surrounding area as possible."

Spokesman for O2 Angela Johnson said a tremendous amount of research has been conducted into the safety of these masts.

"These are very low powered two way radio transmitters, with less power than a mobile phone," she said.

"We only put these monopoles where we absolutely need them, but this is a consumer driven business and the majority of people value a good mobile phone service."

A decision will be made by the city council's planning committee today (Thursday) with a recommendation that prior approval is granted.

• What do YOU think? Should there be tighter rules governing the positioning of phone masts? Do we need to know more about possible health issues relating to them? Write to the editor today with your views.

DEVELOPMENT: Protest at mast close to school

PARENTS are protesting against plans to build a mobile phone mast close to a primary school.

Mother-of-two Michelle Esposito, of Otago Road, Whittlesey, started a petition when Vodafone submitted proposals to build the mast on a grass verge next to Alderman Jacobs Primary School.

She said: "I know we all use mobiles, but to put the mast next to a school and in a residential area is ridiculous.

"Parents with children at the school have signed the petition, as well as residents in neighbouring streets.

"Nobody wants the mast to go there, and everyone has been very supportive.

"The site is on an open piece of grass verge. There are no trees or buildings to disguise it, so it will be an eyesore."

If given the green light, the 10m-high mobile phone mast will be placed at the junction of Drybread Road, Bassenhally Road and Otago Road – just metres from the school.

Mrs Esposito collected about 100 signatures, and sent the petition to Fenland District Council planning office last week.

She added: "I know of two previous phone mast applications which have been turned down in Whittlesey, and residents objected against those.

"One proposed site was near the fire station, and another for the other end of Drybread Road.

"I know there are no proven health risks involved with these masts, but this one shouldn't be put so close to the school."

A spokeswoman for Vodafone said: "We can confirm we have plans for a new mast in Drybread Road, Whittlesey. We can't comment further until the plans have been finalised."

Wendy Coles, spokeswoman for Fenland District Council, said: "If an application is made to put a mobile phone mast up, the company has to comply with government guidelines.

"In this case, Vodafone complied with guidelines, and a 56-day period to consider the application ends this week.

"The only way it could be refused is n grounds of visual impact.

"Its proximity to a school would not be an issue for refusal."

A decision on the mast will be made by the council on Monday.

WOULD YOU MAKE A BETTER U.S. SENATOR THAN THE INCUMBENT?

The truth is now plainly exposed for all who will see it.

There are 19 senators elected as Democrats who will NOT fight for the people, no matter how we plead, and no matter in what numbers. It is not the job of the resource which sends these alerts to endorse or not endorse any candidate. However, if YOU feel strongly that these senators need to be replaced as soon as possible with candidates more loyal and true, the way to do that is through primary election challenges.

The immense side benefit of such an action is that by demonstrating that there are immediate repercussions for betraying our interests, perhaps it will put enough of the fear of the electorate into them to get our "representatives" to start to listen to the voice of the people on other votes coming up. If you live in the states of New Mexico, Nebraska, North Dakota, Florida, Connecticut, Wisconsin, Delaware, Hawaii, or Washington, the next section will give detailed instructions on how YOU can register as a candidate and win. We did what we had to do. We spoke out in sufficient numbers to have the people's will be heard in the votes of our senators. No longer can they pretend they voted the wrong way because they did not hear from us. And that is why we need to keep speaking out, in even greater numbers, so they know the voice of the people will just keep getting louder.

We spoke out and we were ignored. And have you noticed it makes you feel MORE motivated to see real policy change, not less. And that is why it is so critically important for you to forward each alert to as many other people you know as possible, so that they too can be mobilized even as you are now

Thank the senators who stood against Alito Easy one click to send thanks to all the Senators who were in favor of a Filibuster and those who voted against Alito.

We are not going to try to put an upbeat spin on it; Samuel Alito confirmation today as the newest member of the Supreme Court is bad news. But we’re in this for the long haul, and the work for a more just and sustainable America will continue. Thousands of TrueMajority members called Congress, and tens of thousands more sent letters asking senators to stand up for a filibuster and allow for a full debate of Samuel Alito’s record. Twenty-five senators did this, and in doing so showed political courage in the face of overwhelming odds. A total of 42 stood up against Judge Alito’s appointment during the final vote.

According to Ralph Neas, the head of People for the American Way, "Senators who voted to extend debate did everything possible to defeat the nomination of Samuel Alito to a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court. They also upheld the Senats crucial role in our system of checks and balances. We believe that time will confirm the wisdom of their attempt to defeat this nominee". Cindy Sheehan: "I was arrested before the State of the Union Address"

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/2/1/31944/23746#6

What Really Happened

by Cindy Sheehan

Wed Feb 01, 2006 at 01:19:44 AM PDT

Dear Friends,

As most of youI was arrested before the State of
the Union Address have probably heard, tonight.

I am speechless with fury at what happened and with grief over what we
have lost in our country.

There have been lies from the police and distortions by the press.
(Shocker) So this is what really happened:

This afternoon at the People's State of the Union Address in DC where I
was joined by Congresspersons Lynn Woolsey and John Conyers, Ann Wright, Malik Rahim and John Cavanagh, Lynn brought me a ticket to the State of the Union Address. At that time, I was wearing the shirt that said: 2245 Dead. How many more?

After the PSOTU press conference, I was having second thoughts about
going to the SOTU at the Capitol. I didn't feel comfortable going. I
knew George Bush would say things that would hurt me and anger me and I knew that I couldn't disrupt the address because Lynn had given me the
ticket and I didn't want to be disruptive out of respect for her. I, in
fact, had given the ticket to John Bruhns who is in Iraq Veterans
Against the War. However, Lynn's office had already called the media and
everyone knew I was going to be there so I sucked it up and went.

I got the ticket back from John, and I met one of Congresswoman Barbara
Lee's staffers in the Longworth Congressional Office building and we
went to the Capitol via the undergroud tunnel. I went through security
once, then had to use the rest room and went through security again.

My ticket was in the 5th gallery, front row, fourth seat in. The person
who in a few minutes was to arrest me, helped me to my seat.

I had just sat down and I was warm from climbing 3 flights of stairs
back up from the bathroom so I unzipped my jacket. I turned to the right
to take my left arm out, when the same officer saw my shirt and yelled;
"Protester." He then ran over to me, hauled me out of my seat and
roughly (with my hands behind my back) shoved me up the stairs. I said
something like "I'm going, do you have to be so rough?" By the way, his
name is Mike Weight.

The officer ran with me to the elevators yelling at everyone to move out
of the way. When we got to the elevators, he cuffed me and took me
outside to await a squad car. On the way out, someone behind me said,
"That's Cindy Sheehan." At which point the officer who arrested me said:
"Take these steps slowly." I said, "You didn't care about being careful
when you were dragging me up the other steps." He said, "That's because
you were protesting." Wow, I get hauled out of the People's House
because I was, "Protesting."

I was never told that I couldn't wear that shirt into the Congress. I
was never asked to take it off or zip my jacket back up. If I had been
asked to do any of those things...I would have, and written about the
suppression of my freedom of speech later. I was immediately, and
roughly (I have the bruises and muscle spasms to prove it) hauled off
and arrested for "unlawful conduct."

After I had my personal items inventoried and my fingers printed, a nice
Sgt. came in and looked at my shirt and said, "2245, huh? I just got
back from there."

I told him that my son died there. That's when the enormity of my loss
hit me. I have lost my son. I have lost my First Amendment rights. I
have lost the country that I love. Where did America go? I started
crying in pain.

What did Casey die for? What did the 2244 other brave young Americans
die for? What are tens of thousands of them over there in harm's way for
still? For this? I can't even wear a shirt that has the number of troops
on it that George Bush and his arrogant and ignorant policies are
responsible for killing.

I wore the shirt to make a statement. The press knew I was going to be
there and I thought every once in awhile they would show me and I would
have the shirt on. I did not wear it to be disruptive, or I would have
unzipped my jacket during George's speech. If I had any idea what
happens to people who wear shirts that make the neocons uncomfortable
that I would be arrested...maybe I would have, but I didn't.

There have already been many wild stories out there.

I have some lawyers looking into filing a First Amendment lawsuit
against the government for what happened tonight. I will file it. It is
time to take our freedoms and our country back.

I don't want to live in a country that prohibits any person, whether
he/she has paid the ultimate price for that country, from wearing,
saying, writing, or telephoning any negative statements about the
government. That's why I am going to take my freedoms and liberties
back. That's why I am not going to let Bushco take anything else away
from me...or you.

I am so appreciative of the couple of hundred of protesters who came to
the jail while I was locked up to show their support....we have so much
potential for good...there is so much good in so many people.

Four hours and 2 jails after I was arrested, I was let out. Again, I am
so upset and sore it is hard to think straight.

Keep up the struggle...I promise you I will too.

Love and peace soon,

Cindy

Sheehan Removed From House Chamber Before Speech

From Associated Press

6:20 PM PST, January 31, 2006

Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq who reinvigorated the anti-war movement, was taken into custody by police in the House gallery tonight just before President Bush's State of the Union address.

Police escorted Sheehan from the visitors' gallery above the House chamber after causing a disruption, said a Capitol Police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the incident were sketchy.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif., had invited Sheehan to the address as her guest.

"I'm proud that Cindy's my guest tonight," Woolsey said in an interview before the speech. "She has made a difference in the debate to bring our troops home from Iraq."

Woolsey offered Sheehan a ticket to the speech -- Gallery 5, seat 7, row A -- earlier Tuesday while Sheehan was attending an "alternative state of the union" press conference by CODEPINK, a group promoting the end of the Iraq war.

Barbara Lee challenges President Bush's State of the Union

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

Tue Jan 31, 2006 23:55

By Lisa Vorderbrueggen

Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairwomen Reps. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, and Lynn Woolsey, D-Santa Rosa, painted an alternative state of the union picture Tuesday as a precursor to President Bush's much-anticipated evening speech.

The 62-member caucus' platform features a range of policies from bringing troops home from Iraq, and instituting congressional ethics reforms, universal health care and anti-poverty programs.

"Our nation faces a crisis and we stand at a crossroads," said Lee on Tuesday morning from Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C. "Will we continue to be a nation of laws or a nation where the executive claims the privilege of lawlessness? Will we be a nation run for the benefit of big corporations and wealthy donors or a nation of opportunity, where people who work hard are rewarded and everyone has a shot at the American dream?"

Lee, viewed as one of Congress' most liberal members, was referring to the controversy over Bush's support of spying on Americans that may have ties to terrorists, the often too-cozy relationship between lawmakers and lobbyists and the Democrats' contention that conservative policies hurt the poor and help the rich.

Lee has introduced three bills related to the caucus' focus on eradicating poverty.

"Since President Bush took office, the number of poor people in America has grown by 17 percent, growing at a rate of more than 1 million each year," Lee said, and added that the number of children in extreme poverty grew by 500,000. "This is the real state of the so-called 'ownership society.' "

Lee seeks a presidential action plan for the eradication of poverty, a Congressional Budget Office analysis of the impact on poverty of pending federal legislation and a roll-back of tax cuts that Republicans support.

But she used her strongest words to criticize the president on the Iraq war.

"Tonight, the president will take to the stage to try and put a good face on a year of failures," she said. "One thing you won't hear him talk about, however, is the price of his reckless, unnecessary war in Iraq. You won't see him include the cost for the war in the budget that he submits to Congress next week, either.

"You see, the president doesn't have the courage to level with the American people about just how long his 'stay-the-course' policy will keep up in Iraq and how much it will cost, and ask the American people to sacrifice for it."

Details of the caucus members' proposals are available on-line at the http://www.thenation.com , a liberal political magazine.

The Times' will feature local reaction to the president's speech from the full East Bay congressional delegation after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Abundant wildlife and rugged beauty have made the Book Cliffs wilderness one of Utah's most popular backcountry destinations, beloved of hunters and hikers alike. And Nine Mile Canyon, sacred to the Ute tribe, is prized by many for its amazing prehistoric rock art. Both these areas are part of more than a million acres of wilderness-quality lands whose future is being determined now by the Bureau of Land Management. Wyoming Range, One of State's Unsung Gems

The Wyoming Range is an isolated string of peaks rising from sloping foothills and vast sagebrush plains of western Wyoming. These mountains are a surprise, a shadowy silhouette on the horizon tucked away from major highways. Those who venture into its reaches discover one of Wyoming's finest collections of natural treasures-creeks plunging over spectacular falls, pristine alpine lakes, open meadows and rust-colored peaks rising to 11,363 feet in elevation. Despite the range's recreational and natural values, the U.S. Forest Service is proposing to open these public lands to oil and gas development.

Councillors to decide on mast

Public representatives on Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council will have the final say on whether a mobile mast will be erected near a primary school, crèche and playground on the Southside. The Cabinteely District Residents’ Association has been campaigning against a council decision to grant planning permission for the Vodafone mast to be erected on the Lodge House in Cabinteely Park.

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council originally granted planning permission for the mast last summer but after several objections from local residents the matter was appealed to An Bord Pleanala.

Two weeks ago, the board finally granted permission for the mast to the dismay of local residents who are stepping up their opposition because of fears for their health.

Deirdre Smith of the Cabinteely Residents’ Association told Southside People last week: “We are particularly concerned for the possible health effects on children attending the local girls’ primary school, St Brigid’s and for children playing in the playground in Cabinteely park.”

Ms Smith said residents had asked the six local councillors in the Ballybrack electoral area to table a motion withdrawing the council’s offer of a lease of local authority land to Vodafone.

This would prevent the phone company from erecting the mast until the outcome of the review of a Dáil report was completed, Ms Smith said.

If the report found that there were no adverse health implications, the residents would not object to the erection of the mast, she added.

The review of the report into non-ionising radiation from mobile phone handsets and masts is due to be completed in June of this year.

In the meantime it transpires that the mast will only get the go ahead if a majority of the 28 councillors vote in favour of leasing part of the site – which is on council property - to Vodafone.

Richard Shakespeare, the senior executive officer in the cultural and communications department of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, said that all disposals of land for a period of greater than 12 months are affected by a section 183 disposal.

“That is a reserved function,” he said. “The 28 elected members of the council have the right of disposal. The money generated from the masts is used for building playgrounds and is going into a project to build a further 27 playgrounds throughout the county.”

Cllr Dennis O’Callaghan (Lab) said last week that he was concerned about the close proximity of the mast to the lodge and the health implications that it could pose to residents.

“If the disposal of land comes in the form of a section 183 then I will most likely vote against it,” he said.
Cllr Larry Butler (FF) said that residents asked him not to support the mast application until the Dáil report was published.

“I will be voting against the erection of the mast on the basis that we should wait for the report,” Cllr Butler said.

However, Cllr Butler said he warned locals that if the council does not erect the mast the operators could “go across the road to a local business and get the mast just as easily”.

A spokesperson for Vodafone said anything that delays the establishment of their networks has an impact on their business and their customers.

“Our priority is to make sure that our customers can make and receive calls,” the spokeswoman said.

Psyche und Homöopathie

Peter Raba Psyche und Homöopathie von A - Z Homöopathie für Seele und Gemüt

Ein anschauliches Repertorium zur Signatur und Psychologie homöopathischer Arzneien mit Suchbegriffen von Angst bis Zynismus Bd. 7 der Reihe Homöothek

Andromeda-Verlag, Murnau 2005 (Neuerscheinung), ISBN 3-932938-07-0
1290 Seiten, 90 Abbildungen, € 148,-

Angry mums' save our school sit-in

ANGRY mums staged an all-night sit-in protest at a Glasgow primary school.

More than 25 parents took over closure-threatened Carnwadric Primary on the south side - and have vowed to keep up their fight to make the council think again.

Education bosses want to shut the 239-pupil school on Capelrig Street and then merge it with Arden Primary at a new building for 360 pupils.

But parents say the new primary will be built next to a motorway and mobile phone mast, and will mean pupils being forced to walk a mile-and-a-half to school.

Campaigners fighting the plans have already submitted a 1600-signature petition to the council.

And yesterday, as the school day ended at 3pm, around 25 parents moved in to occupy the building, carrying sleeping bags and pillows, and waving Save Our School posters.

They headed for the gym, where groups of them took it in turn to spend the night, before finally leaving around 6am today.

The protest was organised by Pauline Gilgallon, chairwoman of the school board.

Pauline, whose daughters Bronwyn, 10, Charlotte, 8, and Romy, 7, are pupils there, said: "We have arranged a shift pattern. It is a peaceful disruption. We are making a statement about the closure of the school.

"I'm optimistic this will work. It's strength in numbers, but the bottom line is closing Carnwadric is about money.

"Even if the council decides to go ahead, we're not giving up."

Former pupil Lynn Wright, 30, was among the protesters.

The mum, whose nine-year-old son Dylan attends the school, said: "We're not taking this without a fight."

And as she left the school today, Sharon Wallace, 55, mum of five-year-old pupil Gemma said: "The parents were taking it in shifts to sit in at the school from 3pm yesterday.

"We were tired but felt as if we had to make a stand."

A decision on the future of Carnwadric Primary and dozens of other schools which are under threat will be made on Thursday.

A city council spokesman said today: "The consultation period has been finished for some time and every single response the council received will have been taken into consideration."

Carnwadric also has a nursery, creche and a Langside College campus.

Spinning the State of the Union

The American Prospect
by Robert Kuttner

01/30/06

How do you give an upbeat State of the Union address when your major foreign policy, Iraq, is a quagmire; your signature domestic program, Medicare drugs, is a bomb; and nearly two thirds of Americans, according to the latest Gallup Poll, think the country is worse off than five years ago? Here are a few things to watch for in President Bush's first big election-year speech Tuesday: Mission Accomplished? On Iraq, look for rhetoric of steady resolve, coupled with promises to limit American exposure. Bush could offer a partial reduction of US combat troops during 2006 (in time for the mid-term election) -- but without any realistic prospect of a stable Iraqi government to fill the vacuum. One idea: a 'garrison strategy' of keeping most US forces safely inside bases. This might cut American combat losses, but cede the countryside to guerrilla fighters and anarchy...

A TCFer makes the TSA 'no-fly' list

WolfesBlog
by Claire Wolfe

01/30/06

What's amazing is that American citizens blandly tolerate any such list. Secret. Arbitrary. Obviously politically motivated. How can this be okay with anybody? Nixon was hounded and ridiculed for his infamous 'enemies list.' But at least his list included high-power political types. GWB's list is longer and reaches out to include thousands of ordinary people who never did anything more than express an opinion or three. How can this be okay? I know why there isn't more outrage among activists, though. It's because there's too damn much to be outraged about. Take a number. Get in line. A client and I were talking about The List the other day. We both figure that if Americus Fernando Henshawe is on it, then we probably are, too. But since we both refuse to fly, we may never know. I tell ya, it almost makes me want to buy some $29 bargain airfare and go to the airport just to see...

The real danger of presidential spying

Jurist
by Brian Foley

01/30/06

Most of the complaints about President Bush authorizing NSA phone taps without a warrant focus on the ethereal right to privacy, such as when the New York Times editorialized against spying on 'ordinary Americans,' and the ACLU warned, 'Just knowing that the government is spying without cause on innocent Americans sends a chilling message to all of us that our conversations are not our own.' The predominant fear seems to be that people who have nothing to do with terrorism might be mistaken for terrorists and subjected to intrusive surveillance. This is the thrust of the lawsuits that the ACLU and the Center for Constitutional Rights have filed to stop the spying. The most important issue is not, however, whether people feel comfortable talking on the phone or sending emails. The real danger is that electronic surveillance can be used to increase and solidify executive power...

http://freepage.twoday.net/stories/1493488/

Hallo Herr Gobsch,

Zur Bienenstudie eine erste Anmerkung

Helmut Breunig

Petrodollar Warfare

Interview With William R. Clark, Author "Petrodollar Warfare: Oil, Iraq and the Future of the Dollar"

The notion that Iraq was invaded to prevent the development of weapons of mass destruction, or to combat terrorism, has long been discredited. But a growing consensus believes that Iraq's oil was surely a prime reason for US actions. However, author William Clark argues convincingly in Petrodollar Warfare that the rationale for intervening was not just for control of the oil fields, but also for control of the means by which oil is traded in global markets. Just as there was no evidence that Iraq was developing nuclear weapons, there is no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons. There is nothing but unproven assertions, assertions, moreover, that are contradicted by the evidence that does exist. While most Americans remain preoccupied with war, terrorism, high gas prices - or the coming Pitt-Jolie baby - an issue that may dwarf all of those concerns receives major attention in the Sunday editions of the New York Times and the Washington Post. One story raises a nightmare scenario for the end of the world, at least as we know it, while the other suggests that the Bush administration doesn't want anyone to know about that.

The Alito Betrayal

Congratulations to our two Senators from CA who held firm, but SHAME SHAME SHAME and ELECTORAL HELL to those who failed us:

http://www.democrats.com/alito-betrayal

The Alito Betrayal

Submitted by Bob Fertik on January 30, 2006 - 5:18pm.Sam Alito

We, the voters who elect Democrats in every election, were utterly and completely betrayed today by 18 Democratic Senators that we elected.

Akaka (HI), Baucus (MT), Bingaman (NM), Byrd (WV), Cantwell (WA), Carper (DE), Dorgan (ND), Inouye (HI), Johnson (SD), Kohl (WI), Landrieu (LA), Lieberman (CT), Lincoln (AR), Nelson (FL), Nelson (NE), Pryor (AR), Rockefeller (WV), Salazar (CO)

There was no reason for this betrayal. We only needed 40 of the 45 Democrats to sustain a filibuster. We could have won even if 5 Democrats who were flat-out stupid enough to believe Alito's lies (like Robert Byrd and Kent Conrad) had voted against the filibuster.

Every Democratic Senator knew what was at stake - both in the rulings Justice [sic] Alito will make for the rest of his life, and in the anger - even rage - that will greet their decision to betray us.

So why did these Democrats decide to stab us all in the back?

For one simple reason: because we let them.

Democratic candidates - at every level - take us, the Democratic base, completely for granted.

They ask us for money and we give it to them - with no strings attached. They ask us for votes and we give it to them - with no strings attached.

They are not accountable because we don't hold them accountable.

That must change - and with your help, I will make sure that it does change.

In the coming weeks, I will offer a plan for holding elected Democrats accountable. The plan will be based on some core principles:

* We have a right to be furious at the 18 Democrats who betrayed us - and we have a right to share our fury with those 18 Democrats, as well as the DSCC (202-224-2447) and DNC (202-863-8000).

* The Democratic Party belongs to the people who vote for Democrats, not to the elected officials, party bureaucrats, and rich consultants whose power and wealth comes entirely from us.

* We, the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party, represent the majority of all Americans on every issue Americans care about, and we will win majorities in every state (almost!) if we fight as hard as Republicans do for our issues

* We must find politically strategic ways to channel our anger towards constructive goals, rather than the obvious destructive ones
(like electing even more Republicans to accelerate the rise of Fascism in America).

I'll say a lot more in the days and weeks to come - stay tuned!

Industry-Government Strategy to Approve Terminator Seeds is Confirmed at UN meeting

January 2006
Please distribute widely – http://www.banterminator.org

The industry-governments strategy to end the existing de facto moratorium on Terminator technology at the United Nations has been confirmed by the actions of Australia, with support from New Zealand and Canada, at a meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Granada Spain January 23-27. Intensified action from every region of the world is now needed to ensure that the moratorium can be upheld and strengthened at the major UN meeting in March in Brazil
(March 20-31). Please take action with the International Ban Terminator Campaign.

Ban Terminator Campaign and ETC Group News Release 27 January 2006 http://www.etcgroup.org http://www.banterminator.org

Granada's Grim Sowers Plow up Moratorium on Terminator, Clear the Path for its Approval at UN

Terminator Opponents Prepare for Battle at COP8 in Curitiba, Brazil March 20-31, 2006

Indigenous peoples were betrayed and Farmers' Rights trampled at a UN meeting this week when the Australian, New Zealand and Canadian governments - guided by the US government and a brazen cabal of corporate Gene Giants - took a major step to undermine the existing moratorium on Terminator technology (i.e., plants that are genetically modified to produce sterile seeds at harvest). The damaging recommendations from the meeting in Granada, Spain, now go to the upcoming 8th biennial meeting of the UN's Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Curitiba, Brazil, March 20-31.

The CBD's "Working Group on Article 8(j)" that met in Granada this week was established to protect the traditional knowledge, innovation and practices of Indigenous peoples and peasant farmers. Civil society groups and Indigenous peoples watched in disbelief however as governments ignored the profoundly negative social, economic and environmental impacts of "suicide seeds" highlighted in numerous CBD studies as well as in official submissions from Indigenous peoples and farmers' organizations. The outcome now threatens biodiversity and the future of seed-saving and locally adapted agriculture worldwide.

"Terminator poses a threat to our welfare and food sovereignty and constitutes a violation of our human right of self-determination," said Mariano Marcos Terena of Brazil on behalf of the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity.

Although the meeting "reaffirmed" the fragile UN moratorium on Terminator, new recommendations adopted in Granada now may be used to block the CBD's precautionary approach when governments meet in March in Brazil. Not only did the meeting fail to condemn Terminator as immoral and anti-farmer, Australia and the United States falsely claimed that Terminator, which creates sterility, would "increase productivity."

With a US government official consulting at her side, the Australian negotiator insisted on deleting reference to the "precautionary approach" and used this as a bargaining chip to win controversial wording for a "case-by-case risk assessment" of Terminator. "The new reference to case-by-case assessment is shocking and extremely damaging because it suggests that national regulatory review of Terminator is possible - it undermines the CBD moratorium, opening the door to Terminator approval," warns Hope Shand of ETC Group.

"Australia's brazen move confirms that an alarming government- industry strategy is in play to overturn the UN moratorium on Terminator," said Lucy Sharratt of the Ban Terminator Campaign. "The process and outcome dismiss the contributions of Indigenous peoples and local communities."

Despite the unscrupulous push by a handful of rich countries to put industry profits before Farmers' Rights, the majority of governments at the meeting remain solidly opposed to Terminator technology and committed to the existing moratorium. In her welcoming address the Spanish Minister of the Environment acknowledged the dangers of Terminator technology. During the meeting, the African Group, Egypt and the Philippines made impassioned speeches about the potentially devastating impacts of Terminator on biodiversity and food security and the need for national bans. Norway, Pakistan, Kenya and the European Union defended the existing moratorium. India and Brazil both referred to their national laws prohibiting genetic seed sterilization technology. Despite this strong opposition to Terminator, Australia's extreme position and its determination to block consensus left governments little room to negotiate.

In the Halls of Shame: Despite public pledges not to develop Terminator technology, Gene Giants Syngenta and Monsanto lobbied aggressively on Terminator throughout the week. Harry Collins of Delta and Pine Land, the world's largest cotton seed company which is now testing Terminator plants in greenhouses, attended under the auspices of the International Seed Federation. Monsanto's Roger Krueger moonlighted as a representative from the International Chamber of Commerce. They were joined in the corridors by CropLife International, a pesticide lobby group representing the "plant science industry."

Outside the UN meeting Spanish people of all ages gathered to remind governments of the strong public resistance to Terminator technology. Ecologistas en Accion organized public events, street protests, and educational street displays throughout the week as part of the International Ban Terminator Campaign (http://www.banterminator.org). When news of the Granada outcome reached the plenary of the World Social Forum in Caracas Venezuela last night there were shouts of anger from thousands of assembled farmers.

"Allowing 'case by case' approval of Terminator means a slow death for farmers 'coffin-by-coffin' " explained Silvia Ribeiro of ETC Group speaking in Caracas.

The Ban Terminator Campaign will work with groups and movements across the world to strengthen the global resistance to stop Terminator. The fight now moves to the COP8 meeting in Brazil March
20-31.

A transcript of the Draft Recommendation submitted by the Working Group can be read on ETC Group's web site at: http://www.etcgroup.org/documents/8jWorkingGroupRecommendations.pdf
