US 'Secret War' Expands Globally as Special Operations Forces Take larger Role

Army Plans $100 Million Special Ops HQ in Afghanistan

All around Afghanistan, from Kandahar Airfield to the Bagram jail, the U.S. military is on a building spree, spending hundreds of millions of dollars on wartime encampments. By one count, America and its allies now have 700 bases in Afghanistan.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates will join fellow elitists for the first time at the 2010 Bilderberg conference currently taking place in Sitges Spain, after he apparently attempted to pull a bait and switch by pretending to attend another event before being forced to admit to journalists that he will give a speech at the globalist confab.

America must come to terms with a new vulnerability

Christian Science Monitor
by Louis Rene Beres

All talk about ‘victory’ and ‘defeat’ in our current wars may actually be beside the point. Whatever happens in Iraq and Afghanistan, the vulnerability of American cities to both mass-destruction terrorism and ballistic missile attack will remain more or less unchanged. Oddly, this new and ironic military reality is still generally unrecognized, even in the fundamentally transformed US national security policy outlined by President Obama at West Point last week. Consider how different matters were in the past...

Serving the Empire, Killing for Lies

Future of Freedom Foundation

We made it through another Memorial Day. Thankfully, most people think of it as just the start of summer. They don’t seem to use it as America’s political leaders have long wanted: as a day of reverence for America’s world domination. In his radio address this past Saturday President Obama urged all Americans to ’serve’ the members of the armed forces ‘as well as they served us’...

Dying, dead marine wildlife paint dark, morbid picture of Gulf Coast following oil spill

"When we found this dolphin it was filled with oil. Oil was just pouring out of it. It was the saddest darn thing to look at," said a BP contract worker who took the Daily News on a surreptitious tour of the wildlife disaster unfolding in Louisiana.

BP Oil Leak May Last Until Christmas

BP Plc's failure since April to plug a Gulf of Mexico oil leak has prompted forecasts the crude may continue gushing into December in what President Barack Obama has called the greatest environmental disaster in U.S. history.

BP paid for officials' meals, airfare and polar bear trip

The embattled oil and gas giant BP paid for a slew of travel and dining arrangements for senior government officials in the years leading up to the massive oil leak in the Gulf. Critics say BP got too close with regulators, neutering the government's safety watchdogs.

How to blame Obama for the Gulf spill

The American Prospect
by Tim Fernholz

With the disappointing news that the latest attempt — the evocatively named ‘top kill’ — to seal the leaking oil well in the Gulf of Mexico has failed, political pressure on President Barack Obama has increased. It’s important, though, to understand how the government failed if we want to hold the administration accountable in the right way. Calls for the president to do more — personified by James Carville’s ranting or Maureen Dowd asking the president to emote more — seem designed to encourage theater rather than fix the mess. The problem with these critiques is that in interactions between government and business, the government’s responsibility is before-the-fact, not after. Obama can be faulted for failing to make corner-cutting BP play it safe in the Gulf, but it’s not clear what more he can do to stop the leak...

Craig Collins, Truthout: "It's heart breaking and enraging to witness the toxic assault being visited upon the wildlife and the people of the Gulf. Heart-breaking because, as a SCUBA diver, I have come to cherish the awe-inspiring world that lives beneath the sea; and I have no doubt that the carnage we're witnessing along the shores pales in comparison to the unseen catastrophe unfolding beneath the waves. Enraging because the toxic assault being visited upon the wildlife and coastal communities of the Gulf could have been prevented."

The World Teeters on the Brink of a New Age of Rage

By Simon Schama

Historians will tell you there is often a time-lag between the onset of economic disaster and the accumulation of social fury. Lift the Siege

This says it all

by Justin Raimondo

An American is killed as heavilty armed soldiers of a foreign nation board a ship in international waters, firing live ammunition at the passengers as they rappel onto the deck. Among those passengers: a former US ambassador, a former US colonel and Pentagon official, several members of the European parliament, a member of the Israeli Knesset, and members of parliament from several Arab countries. Imagine if Iran had done this. Washington would have reverberated with the sound of thunder emanating from the White House, and the attack fleet would already be steaming toward the Gulf, taking up position. That the culprit was Israel, however, puts a whole different face on the matter, at least as far as our government is concerned: they’re content to let the Israelis ‘investigate,’ and let the matter drop...

The Israeli flotilla attack: Victimhood, aggression and tribalism

by Glenn Greenwald

One can express all sorts of outrage over the Obama administration’s depressingly predictable defense of the Israelis … but ultimately, on some level, wouldn’t it have been even more indefensible — or at least oozingly hypocritical — if the U.S. had condemned Israel? After all, what did Israel do in this case that the U.S. hasn’t routinely done and continues to do? … we’re slaughtering an ‘amazing number’ of innocent people at checkpoints in Afghanistan. We’re routinely killing civilians in all sorts of imaginative ways in countless countries, including with drone strikes which a U.N. official just concluded are illegal. We’re even targeting our own citizens for due-process-free assassination. We’ve been arming Israel and feeding them billions of dollars in aid and protecting them diplomatically as they (and we) have been doing things like this for decades. What’s the Obama administration supposed to say about what Israel did: we condemn the killing of unarmed civilians? We decry these violations of international law? Even by typical standards of government hypocrisy, who in the U.S. Government could possibly say any of that with a straight face?
