SIR - Scientists from Edinburgh and Oxford Universities are studying swarm behaviour.

Apparently, most swarms use their large groups to protect themselves, their own interests, unlike ants and bees which work together as a single unit and are prepared to die for the greater good of the colony.

No, I am not suggesting politicians show the same commitment!

I was reminded of these swarming instincts when I read that been colonies have suffered significant losses in the last two years.

Not unexpectedly, Mukasey — a staunch defender of Bush’s theories about expansive presidential powers — ignored the letter. Now, however, despite even more evidence of torture and a Democratic administration in place, the calls for a special prosecutor have grown muted. SCHOOL leaders are celebrating victory after a controversial application for a mobile phone mast – which would sit just yards from their gates – was withdrawn.

For the past three weeks, Newquay Pre-School has campaigned against mobile phone giant Vodafone, which planned to erect a mobile mast on a floodlight at Newquay AFC'S Mount Wise Stadium.

However, after a public crusade against the plans by the school, Newquay AFC's committee withdrew their consent for Vodafone's application on the stadium, scuppering the plans.

Reacting to the news, Karen Austin, chairman of the preschool committee, said she was overjoyed.

"I am absolutely delighted that it's all over now and the school can now focus on other things," she said.
