Return our weekend warriors

AntiWar.Com
by Kelley B. Vlahos

05/04/10

As of April 24, 622 members of the Guard have been killed in the two-front war since 2001. Forget the whole bit about ‘weekend warriors’ — reservists have become indispensable to the ongoing overseas operations since Bush himself launched the country into war nine years ago. But activists in several states are saying that the founding fathers did not envision the state ‘militias’ being used in foreign invasions and occupations, especially those against enemies that do not pose an imminent threat to the continental United States. Plus, the constant redeployment of the Guard has left local first-responders such as fire and police departments struggling to fill staff, families under mental and financial strain, and domestic emergency response capability increasingly at risk. This is not to mention the psychological toll on the soldiers themselves...

Documents Suggest Bush White House Failed to Search for Libby's "Missing" Emails Subpoenaed in CIA Leak Probe

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Between late 2005 and January 2006, the Bush administration tried to recover 'lost' emails from staffers who worked in the Office of the Vice President (OVP), an effort that centered on a critical week - October 1 through October 6, 2003 - that coincided with an announcement by the Justice Department that it had launched an investigation into the leak of covert CIA operative Valerie Plame Wilson."

Initial Jobless Claims in U.S. Unexpectedly Increase

More Americans than anticipated filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week, a reminder that the labor market will take time to strengthen and may weigh on the economic recovery.

The Bad Job Numbers and the Secret Second Stimulus

Robert Reich, RobertReich.org: "The Labor Department reports that 85,000 jobs were lost in December. The official rate of unemployment (which measures how many people are looking for jobs) held steady at 10 percent nonetheless. That's because so many more people have stopped looking. Reportedly, 661,000 Americans dropped out of the labor force last month, deciding there was no hope of finding a job. Had they continued to look, the official unemployment rate would have been 10.4 percent."

Intelligence Improperly Collected on U.S. Citizens

In February, a Department of Homeland Security intelligence official wrote a "threat assessment" for the police in Wisconsin about a demonstration involving local pro- and anti-abortion rights groups.

Obama moves ahead with AFRICOM

Concerned over the supply of oil to the US and a supposed need to continue the global 'War on Terror', President Barack Obama has essentially maintained the militarised approach to Africa that was the hallmark of his immediate predecessors George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, writes Daniel Volman.

Global Warming, the Media, and the Impending Catastrophe

By Ann Robertson and Bill Leumer

Why have protests around global warming been so muted in the U.S. while so intense in Europe? In part, the explanation lies in how the U.S. media has been covering global warming, which has sowed confusion, complacency, and paralysis.

Obama Is Preparing for War in South America

Interview with Eva Golinger

By Mike Whitney

The rise of Barack Obama neutralized a growing sentiment for profound change inside the US. Hopefully, the slowdown in US activism will only be temporary. South of the border, there is tremendous change taking place. New social, political and economic models are being built by popular grassroots movements in Venezuela, Bolivia and other Latin American nations that seek economic and social justice.

More and More, Obama Seems a Faux Liberal

By JOHN R. MacARTHUR

Following President Obama's war speeches at West Point and Oslo -- two breathtaking exercises in political cynicism that killed any hope of authentic liberal reform - I've got only one question: Have the liberals who worshipped at the altar of "change you can believe in" had enough?

US plans for Latin America unravel

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

01/05/10

Just eight months ago, President Obama was calling Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ‘my man’ and suggesting that the South American country could become a leading U.S. partner in the region. Since then, Brazil has criticized the U.S. approach to the coup in Honduras and warned the United States over plans to expand its military presence in Colombia...

Presidential “peacemaking” in Latin America

In These Times
by Noam Chomsky

01/05/10

Barack Obama, the fourth U.S. president to win the Nobel Peace Prize, joins the others in the long tradition of peacemaking so long as it serves U.S. interests. All four presidents left their imprint on ‘our little region over here that has never bothered anybody,’ as U.S. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson characterized the hemisphere in 1945. Given the Obama administration’s stance toward the elections in Honduras in November, it may be worthwhile to examine the record...
