Mobile phone masts refused amid protests over locations

Monday, November 24, 2008, 08:59

FOUR out of seven mobile phone masts to cover 'blind spot' areas in Torbay have been refused planning permission.

Torbay Council's development control committee was considering the applications by mobile phone company Vodaphone for slimline masts, to be disguised as telegraph poles or lamp standards, and equipment cabinet stations, to fill in areas of poor 3G signal reception.

The company wanted masts between 10 and 15 metres high at Herbert Road, Hawkins Road, St Vincent's Road, Perinville Road, Grafton Road and Warberry Road in Torquay, and Lammas Lane in Paignton.

Planner Mike Smith said the structures would be mono-pole masts rather than lattice structures as they were designed to give line of sight cover for small areas of just a few roads.

He said: "The company has had complaints about inadequate coverage and its contract obliges it to fill in the gaps."

There were public protests about Herbert Road, Hawkins Avenue and Perinville Road, and each was refused.

Fury over phone mast plan

A phone mast has been proposed for the Guardian Road Industrial Estate, right near houses, a new care home and a school.

Families, community leaders and teachers are furious a mobile phone mast could be put up despite what they claim is a lack of consultation with the public.

One of the maps included in the application cites the wrong location for the mast - positioning it in a nearby cemetery rather than in an area near homes, a junior school, play area, fire station and a new care home.

Huntington mobile phone mast uproar

4:40pm Friday 21st November 2008

By Mike Laycock »

ANGRY residents have attacked plans to build a 23-metre tall mobile phone mast in a field near York.

Vodaphone Ltd has applied to City of York Council to install the lattice-type telecommunications mast, along with three antennas and two transmission dishes, at Hall Farm in Church Lane, Huntington.

But one local resident, Tom Claxton, claimed today the mast would spoil one of the most attractive views in the York area.

Another villager, Michael Sherlock, who lives in Paddock Close, less than 200 metres from the proposed mast site, has written to the council to claim: “It will totally dominate the surrounding countryside and will be clearly seen by house owners from the Old Village.

“No attempt is being made to disguise the shape and it will be an eyesore. I most strongly object.”

Huntington phone mast site defended

1:30pm Monday 24th November 2008

By Mike Laycock »

MOBILE phone giant Vodaphone has strongly defended its controversial plans for a 23-metre telecommunications mast in a village near York.

It said today it had examined 16 alternative locations for the mast before selecting the proposed site at Hall Farm in Church Lane, Huntington.

It insisted the mast would be neither visually intrusive nor a hazard to the health of local residents.

The Press reported on Friday that angry villagers had blasted Vodaphone’s planning application to City of York Council to put up the lattice-type telecommunications mast, along with three antennas and two transmission dishes.

Local residents claimed the mast would be an eyesore and a blot on the landscape which would spoil one of the most attractive views in York and dominate the surrounding countryside.

Phone mast will be sited near hospital

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 09:00

PERMISSION has been given for a phone mast to be erected next to a hospital despite it being near another pole belonging to a different company.

Vodafone has been given permission to build the 37ft structure containing three antennae, plus an equipment cabinet on the pavement, in Hilton Road, Hartshill.

It will be sited between two trees and will have a wood effect finish to make it look like a telegraph pole.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council's development control committee heard there is a T-Mobile pole about 50ft away, but sharing was ruled out because it would have meant extending the existing one and making it obtrusive.

Councillor Ian Mitchell said: "3G masts emit high frequency microwaves. This one is just in front of the hospital and new wards are being built there.

Proliferation of masts down to 3G

20 November 2008

OVER the past few weeks letters have been published regarding the number of phone masts proposed to be erected in Redbridge.

Firstly, let me be quite open in the fact that I cannot take the moral high ground on this as I own a mobile phone and realise that in order to use it there has to be a mast in the vicinity.
