A SEATON headteacher fears that a 50ft mobile phone mast at the village’s rugby club would risk the health of her pupils.

Mobile phone company Telefónica O2 is consulting on plans to put the mast at Seaton Rugby Club opposite the infant school and nursery. But headteacher Lesley Grace has vowed to fight the proposals.

Mrs Grace said: “My concerns centre around the issue of health and safety, and potential harm to the children.

“The proposed installation is directly opposite our school and we strongly believe that the health and well-being of the children at the school would be put at risk by the proposal.”

RESIDENTS, pupils and teachers are set to descend en masse to a planning meeting tonight after a controversial application for a mobile phone mast was recommended for the green light.

About 500 people have written to voice their dismay about a proposal for the mast in Colchester which is close to three schools.

MOBILE phone company O2 is making a fresh attempt to put a mast in Barnards Green.

Last August, the network was refused planning permission to put a 12.5-metre mast at the Sixways industrial estate.

The decision by a Malvern Hills District Council planning committee follows an earlier refusal of a 15-metre mast at the same site in 2006.

In both cases, local people made strenuous objections. They said the mast was too close to homes, shops and businesses, plus a nursing home, the Chase school and the Malvern College playing fields.

WEDNESDAY NOON: Campaigners have promised to fight to the bitter end and camp out on the street to block a mobile phone giant building a mast.

Vodafone unexpectedly turned up to the corner of Sapcote and Grange Drives to start work on Saturday but residents are planning to prevent it happening.

Lyn Summerland who lives opposite the site said: "Why does it have to go here, why can't it go in a field? It is just ridiculous to put it here. I've got two grandchildren who live across the road, I don't want them to grow up with cancer.
