FURIOUS Pinner residents are facing life opposite an unwanted mobile phone after blundering council officers failed to reject the application in time.

Harrow Council turned down a bid by Orange for an 11.5m high mast on a small piece of grass at the junction between Grove Road and Rayners Lane, after dozens of resident objected to the plans.

But a council officer missed the 56-day deadline to let know Orange know their application had been turned down, meaning the phone company can put up the unwanted mast by default.

BECCLES residents have spoken out against plans for a mobile phone mast just over 20m from their homes.

Vodafone is looking at sites for a new 10m-tall mobile phone mast in a bid to keep up with the latest technology and boost signal strength for users.

Before submitting a formal planning application, it sought the views of the council about the location of the mast.

But their preferred site, on Gresham Road, near the Tesco turn-off from George Westwood Way, has angered some residents.

Antennae on office roof spark health fear

A worried pensioner is raising health fears over a planning application submitted to South Bedfordshire District Council for three mobile phone masts on an office rooftop opposite his home.

The application requests three antennae on separate mounts with equipment cabinets and associated works on the roof of Lavells House in Hockliffe Street/Leston Road, but the 72-year-old is concerned about the health effects on people living or working nearby.

The pensioner's home sits only 40 yards away from the site, and when he received notification of the scheme alarm bells started ringing.

Malta has a high concentration of mobile phone antennae that eclipses countries such as the UK, the latter having one antenna for every 1,297 inhabitants while Malta has one for every 194. With a population of 61 million, the UK has 47,000 mobile masts. But Malta’s population of 410,000 already has 2,114 antennae.

A MARSHALSWICK councillor has decided to give up his right to vote against a massively controversial mobile phone mast scheme so he can speak out against it in the Review.

Councillors are not allowed to vote on planning applications they have already publicly commented on , but Councillor Salih Gagasuz told the Review: “I feel very strongly about this.

“For every expert who says there are no health risks in mobile phone masts there is another who disagrees.

“And this particular site – the corner of Gurney Court Road and Sanpit Lane - is the only bit of maintained green space in the area.

“A mast will be an eyesore and it will be dangerous as it will block the view of drivers.”

HAMPTON residents have objected to plans to erect a phone mast in the area.

Vodafone UK Ltd submitted planning application for a new mast, comprising of a 10m high ‘street furniture column’ with three antennas, to be installed on a grass verge off Davies Road in Evesham.

The company say the mast is necessary to ensure Hampton has sufficient coverage of its 3G network which facilitates use of the latest technology, including mobile broadband.

Wychavon District Council’s planning case officer, Heather Pearson, confirmed she did not have any objection to the plans based on its proposed location away from residential properties and within a commercial area.

The council also confirmed consultation had already been carried out with Little Hampton Ward councillors, Evesham Town Council and residents from St James Drive and Woodlands.

However residents have since set-up a petition objecting to the mast which they claim will have an impact on people’s health and property prices in the area.

RESIDENTS filled the Crowborough council offices for a Wealden District Council planning meeting last week to find out if a mobile phone mast was to be built near their homes and schools.

It's not often that an issue draws so much interest from the community, but applications by telecommunications giant Vodafone have resulted in the formation of several pressure groups.

One town, four potential mast sites. But what effect does this modern day issue have on a town like Crowborough? Do phone masts bring residents together or push them apart?

WHEN two mobile phone mast applications were lodged by Vodafone last year the Crowborough school community banded together in a concerted effort to oppose them.

In an unprecedented move, Vodafone met with school representatives to consider two new locations, despite having received planning permission for both previous sites.
