Sunday Meicury SAYS: Sacred mast

[February 12, 2006]

(Sunday Mercury Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)IS nothing sacred?

A parish church in Warwickshire is being offered pounds 3,750 a year to install a mobile phone mast in its tower.

Mobile phone masts have been linked with cancer and other diseases.

The parochial church council at St Mark's in Milverton, Leamington Spa, is considering the offer from phone giant Vodafone which would help the church to carry out missionary work in Africa.

Most of the congregation is said to be against the idea.

Let's pray that the right decision is made.

Council approves disputed phone mast in south Dublin

[February 12, 2006]

(The Irish Times Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)A controversial mobile phone mast being built on a Garda station in south Dublin is within planning regulations, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council said yesterday.

Vilicom, appointed to oversee the erection of telecommunication masts on State buildings, had begun building a replacement mast on Shankill Garda station to facilitate three mobile phone companies. A licence was given for the development from the Office of Public Works as part of its Transforming State Assets Programme. Residents opposed it.

Vilicom did not apply for planning permission, believing the work was exempt development under planning regulations. The council asked the OPW to stop all work on the mast until it ascertained whether it required planning permission.

The mast can hold up to 12 mobile phone antennae. Yesterday the council examined the mast and informed Vilicom it was satisfied that "planning legislation is being adhered to".

Three schools and two residential developments are within 500m of the mast, and residents had protested against its construction. Locals held a protest at the station yesterday to try to prevent the development from going ahead.

Eammon Keogh, spokesman for the Dorney Court Residents' Action Group, said there had been no consultation with the local community.

"Residents are furious that this is being done at a time when major question marks exist about these towers and their link to increased incidents of cancer and motor neurone disease," he said.

An OPW spokesman said the works were similar to those already undertaken at several other Garda stations throughout the State.

Green Party deputy Ciaran Cuffe called on the Minister for the Environment to close the loophole in the planning regulations which allowed such masts to be built without public consultation.

"The planning regulations are riddled with loopholes in this area. The regulations allow for a mast to be replaced, and for up to 12 additional antennae to be placed on it without public consultation," he said.

"This is not acceptable and I have tabled a question in the Dail to the Minister for the Environment asking him whether he intends to revise Class 31 of the 2001 Planning and Development Regulations to allow for public consultation through a formal planning process if additional telecommunications antennae are proposed to be placed on a mast."

Defeat for 'trampled on' anti-mast campaigners

Feb 9 2006

NEIGHBOURS have lost a battle to stop a 30-foot high mobile phone mast being built in their back yard.

The mast will be built at the junction of Tippings Lane and Lunds Farm Road, Woodley, just yards from a bus stop used by Waingel's College pupils.

For two years residents have staged protests against mobile phone network Orange, which says it needs the mast to sort out the current reception blackspot in the Woodley area.

Maidenhead MP Theresa May backed neighbours' demonstration last March when more than 30 protesters took to the streets armed with placards and more than 100 people signed a petition.

But Orange successfully appealed to the Planning Inspectorate in Bristol which gave the mast its backing.

South Lane Lib Dem council-lor Coling Lawley said: "For these appeals a dedicated inspector comes out and has a look at the site.

"They then make a decision as to whether the council were right or wrong to refuse the application."

Alan Alderman, of Tippings Lane, said: "There's not much to say except that we're obviously very disappointed.

"It's a good example of the way local opinion and local government gets trampled on and railroaded by one person sitting in an office hundreds of miles away.

"The local and district councillors were anti, but Orange were very clever. They put in three applications, and claimed they were bending over backwards for us.

"They do not actually need the capacity. The Orange reception here is very good."

Cllr Lawley said: "Three times in the course of about two years we successfully managed to get this turned down.

"The government have put in guidelines so we were complaining on the fact that it was by a bus stop, and on a safe route to school."

MAST SET FOR REFUSAL

A CONTROVERSIAL application for a mobile phone mast in Hagworthingham has been recommended for refusal by East Lindsey District Council (ELDC) planners. The application for a 22.5m 02 phone mast at Mount Pleasant Farm was met with fierce opposition from local people who joined forces to create Hagworthingham Action Group (HAG) in opposition to the mast.

Fury as phone firm plans mast on playing fields

Feb 9 2006

A SHOCK plan by phone company O2 to mount a 12-metre mast on the playing fields in Wildridings Road, has been greeted with anger by residents, parents of Wildridings Primary School and their MP.

Cathy Langham, 40, has a nine-year-old son who attends the school and she lives opposite the field where the mast will stand.

She said: "I am against it as it is right opposite where I live in Ennerdale.

"I don't know enough about the dangers of mobile phone masts so I couldn't comment on that - but the point is that I will be able to see it outside my kitchen window."

Bracknell MP Andrew Mackay is working closely with Wildridings School to monitor the situation.

He said: "I do not think that mobile phone masts should be allowed near areas regularly used by young children, such as schools and playing fields. I believe that the grey area is to whether those phone masts are a danger to young children's health."

Jim Stevenson, a spokesman for O 2 , said the company has asked residents in the area about their thoughts on the mast and have been met with criticism.

He said: "We expected that really. But it is useful to find out what people think so that we can answer any questions they might have."

O2 is preparing to put in an application for planning permission to the council within the next few weeks.

"We chose that site for a number of reasons. Some of the areas we considered we cannot use because they are not suitable and some areas are where we cannot get permission from the owners to build on the site."

John Ford, vice chairman of governors at Wildridings school has sent letters to parents asking them to comment on whether they have any concerns about the mobile phone mast.

He said: "We have sent out 350 letters last week and have only received 10 back. Eight of those were against the mast and the other 2 were not concerned."

The school are planning a meeting with O 2 so that parents can express their views.

Barmüller vom Forum Mobilkommunikation führt ÖsterreicherInnen an der Nase herum: angebliche Grenzwertnorm als Ente enttarnt

Zu Kentnis

Bernhard Carl

GSM-Grenzwert

Gezeichnet Dr. Marlboro“ so Carl abschließend.

Residents' phone mast fury

07 February 2006 | 19:15

FEARS over health risks from mobile phone masts have been highlighted by angry residents faced with having one sited near a children's play area.

Phone giant Vodaphone has submitted an application to Ipswich Borough Council to put up a 10m-high monopole, with three antennae and other radio equipment, in Sidegate Lane.

The proposed patch of land is at the back of Shetland Close and near a small play area.

Two of the close's residents, Terry and Muriel Gooderham, who are aged 68 and 66 respectively, said: “We don't want it and we have sent emails to our councillors - we already have a mast here for the fire station.

“They say there is no proof it's harmful to health, but is there proof it isn't? Why do they want to put it by a children's play area?”

Janet Kippax, 80, who lives nearby in Sidegate Lane and is a homeopathic practitioner, said: “I am not happy with the proposed site, near a play area. There shouldn't be any extra radiation where there are children.

“We have the fire service mast in this area so we feel we have enough in this district.

“I know people want their mobile phones and all the advantages of modern life, but nobody really wants anything in their back yard.”

A spokesman for Vodafone said: “We understand people have concerns about communications equipment but the guidelines to which we comply mean we are all protected, young and old, whether a metre away from the insulation or a mile away.

“The Health Protection Agency has said there's no scientific basis for establishing minimal distances between a mast and an area of public occupancy.”

Subject: The Curry mobile phone mast Bill - petition

Please sign the enclosed important petition and write to your MP and ask them to support the Curry Bill on 3rd Match.

Forward this e-mail to all your friends, family and colleagues and try to get as many people as possible to add their name calling for tougher planning regulations for phone masts. It only takes a few minutes to add your name, this is a chance to send a message to the British Government.

See enclosed e-mail.

Best wishes

Eileen

Dear SCRAM

We have been admirers of your campaign and of Eileen in particular. We have been fighting a local campaign with some success, for the last five years, but recognize that it is only a change in the law that will prevent situations like ours arising. We have over 20 transmitters beaming within a 200 metre radius of almost 1000 nursery, infant and primary aged children and only 65 metres from my daughters' playground. Our Ofcom reading (2/2004) showed an emission level of 1/772 and we await their return imminently.

With a view to doing what we can to help the forthcoming Curry Telecoms Bill at its second reading - now on the 3rd March, we have started an on-line petition which is also convincing MPs to attend the House on that day and vote in favour of the bill. We are Schools and Hospitals Against Mast Emissions (SHAME)

We would be delighted if you would sign the petition and indeed, pass it on to any other campaign groups you know. The more signatures and the more constituencies involved, the better the chances of increasing the profile of this very important piece of proposed legislation. Also, if you know that your own MP has made a commitment to attend, you could make sure that Chris Maile at Planning Sanity is aware - he is compiling a master list of MPs.

Esther Rantzen and Vincent Cable MP support a change in the planning law.

Please visit http://www.shame.org.uk for further information and the on-line petition.

I look forward to hearing from you if you can help or even if you can't.

Kindest regards

COUNCIL HAS 'BROKEN' ITS OWN RULES

Corston View Local Residents

11:12 - 06 February 2006

Bath council chiefs are accused of breaking their own rules in a bizarre saga dating back almost 70 years. Furious residents say Bath and North East Somerset Council bosses have flouted a legal ruling their predecessors passed to stop development on Stirtingale Farm, now known as the Stirtingale playing fields.

Back then farmers did not want the council to make a killing on the land so made sure it was handed over with a covenant that no development could take place there.

But now it is covered with buildings and mobile phone masts which the residents say must come down.

Odd Down resident Paul Trim said the councillors could not ignore the rules.

Council chiefs are understood to be studying the original documents and preparing a report for councillors.
