A PUBLIC meeting will take place today as residents step up their bid to stop a mobile phone mast being built on their doorsteps.

Communications giant O2 wants to put the 12.5m mast on the corner of Redhill and Winchester Road in Bassett, Southampton, but homeowners are concerned about its possible health impact and have enlisted the help of MP Sandra Gidley.

ISLANDERS are intensifying their campaign against plans to build 50 new telecoms masts.

A petition signed by around 1,200 people was delivered to Environment minister David De Lisle outside Frossard House yesterday.

Stephanie Nickolls, who is leading the fight, was supported by dozens of campaigners as she handed it over.

Homeowners are moving house in despair, after a mobile phone company built a telecommunications mast in the face of opposition from residents and the council.That was the message from a councillor at a meeting of Restormel Borough Council's cabinet on Monday, which discussed developments regarding the erection of a 15-metre high mast by O2 at Wheal Northey, St Austell.

A residents' action group was set up in January to fight the proposals on the grounds that the mast poses a threat to public health, especially to that of children in nearby schools.

In a society flooded with mobile phones, Blackberry devices and computers of various shapes and sizes, a quarter of all Britons do not know their own landline number while as little as a third can recall more than three birthdays of their immediate family.
