Church mobile phone mast bid rejected

A CHURCH body has ruled against one of its own churches over a controversial bid to have a mobile phone mast installed.

St Stephen's CE Church, in Oxford Road, Burnley Wood, was forced to hold a Consistory Court hearing to allow opponents to have their say on the installation of an O2 mast in its Grade II listed tower.

Phone mast: law unjust

22 August 2007

SIR - Today I have received a letter from the Planning Inspectorate, at Bristol, containing the unwelcome news that Torridge District Council's decision to refuse permission for the erection of a mobile phone mast on St Mary's Church, Bideford, has been overturned, which means that this monstrous project can now go ahead - to the detriment of the health of people living nearby.

I am afraid Government pressure has played its part in this decision. What is worrying is that the research on the possibly harmful effects of these masts is based on biased and flawed research by Government or cellular phone company-backed institutions.

Mobile phone letters anger

Orange is offering villagers in South Staffordshire £3,000 a year if they allow a mast to be set up on their land.

The firm has written to homes in two Essington streets making the rent offer in a bid to find out who owns nearby farm land.

Essington already has 28 masts and base stations and an action group has been set up to fight applications for more. Orange is now eyeing up vacant land behind Sneyd Lane which does not belong to the local authority. Letters have gone to Sneyd Lane and Bursnips Lane homes.

The move has angered campaigners, who are urging residents to think carefully before agreeing to have a mast so near to their house.

Safety should be the primary concern in sites for cell towers

By Deborah Kopald

August 21, 2007

The Record's May 10 editorial regarding a proposed cell tower on the Blooming Grove highway garage stated, "The latest example of this [cell tower] conflict is in Blooming Grove where the idea of 150-foot towers has people objecting for a real reason [the view] and a not-so-real one ... health.'

This editorializing confuses opinion with fact. Health concerns about cell towers are real. Bottom line — the now ubiquitous digital cell spectrum uses a pulsed wave that is associated with severe DNA breakage in human cells, even at long distances. Cell towers are relatively new, but radar and air traffic control towers (also continuous emitters of extra-low frequency radiation) have been around long enough for studies to show that they are associated with cancer, deep eye cataracts, sterility and brain-related disorders.

Xghajra parents appeal against mobile phone mast

Parents from Xghajra and the local council are up in arms after neighbours installed a mobile phone antenna on their roof in Triq Awrat.

When the MEPA application permit was displayed on their building, some residents wrote to MEPA stating their objections. However, they have now discovered that in spite of their objection, the antenna was installed because there are new legal notices 115 and 187, which state that no MEPA approval is needed for such installations!!

When the mobile company was contacted, it said that such antennae are not harmful; however the parents have other reports showing that radiation issued within 500m of installations are harmful especially for children, even though the radiation is below the stipulated limit.

Children are more prone to such hazards as they absorb the radiation far more than adults. The radiation kills parts of the cells of the body that fight cancer.

DAN GRIMMER
17 August 2007 09:42

Delighted campaigners today notched up another victory in their battle to stop mobile phone masts from being built near their homes.

School fears mobile mast is a health risk

BRIAN FERGUSON CITY COUNCIL REPORTER (bferguson@edinburghnews.com)

A LEADING private school has joined protests against plans by a city church to construct a "hidden" mobile phone mast on its roof.

Staff and parents of pupils at Edinburgh Academy Junior School have hit out plans by neighbouring Inverleith Parish Church to apply for permission to install a fake flagpole in the middle of its square tower.

The school believes the mast, which is to be run by T Mobile, will pose a health risk.
