FIVE phone masts could be removed from public-owned land if Bolton Council decides not to renew contracts with mobile giant Orange.

Although the deals are worth more than £36,000-a-year, concern over the possible health implications of such masts has prompted councillors to question whether or not they should remain.

A BAN on new mobile phone masts in Muharraq will remain in force until authorities come up with further proof that they are safe.

The Muharraq Municipal Council says it is not convinced by "evidence" submitted by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), which claims they are not a health hazard.

It has now extended the ban, imposed in December, indefinitely until it is proved they are safe.

Re: Phone masts ban extended in Muharraq

As a one-time resident of Muharraq, I find this significant. The locals are clearly not acquiescing to HPA and similar dogma but adopting the precautionary principle. Arab democracy in action - a pity we are so sophisticated that we know better.

A city MP has called for a definitive answer into the possible health risks of mobile phone masts after an Evening News survey revealed that hundreds of children were still being taught within metres of them.

Dr Ian Gibson, MP for Norwich North, said people were confused about whether masts did potentially harm people, and called for a review of a report by Sir William Stewart in 2000, then the government's chief adviser on mobile phone safety, which recommended as a precaution that masts should not be sited near schools.

They fear an onslaught of invisible electromagnetic emissions, which some residents believe may lead to health problems.

A GROUP of residents were left deflated after hearing an inspector granted planning permission for a mobile phone mast that they fought against.

The bad news arrived when they opened letters and emails from the Planning Inspectorate about the appeal decision which was made on Tuesday.

Horsell Way resident David Parker, an IT consultant, said: “I am very angry. I am very surprised. I thought we had a strong case as Vodafone were caught out on one or two things.”
