FRUSTRATED residents of Oriole Way, in Bishop's Stortford, are furious that mobile phone giant O2 has been allowed to apply for a fourth time in its bid to install a mast.

As reported by the Citizen last September, O2 had tried to get a 13m highmast with two equipment cabinets at the corner of Oriole Way and Great Hadham Way, but the application was rejected after angry residents opposed the move.

The company has since applied again, once last December and again in January, and the company recently applied for planning permission again, much to the dismay of residents who sent in 106 letters of objection to the last planning application.

But Telus Mobility says only Industry Canada has control over cellphone tower applications

A group of Valleyview Drive residents warned city council Monday night about the prospect of cellphone towers sprouting up in residential neighbourhoods across the city.

They spoke of another urban blight on the landscape of residential neighbourhoods. They shared concerns about plummeting property values once a cellphone tower is erected near their backyards. They talked about the fear of potential health effects from electromagnetic emissions.

A small but determined group of Bayville residents is not giving up on blocking a T-band, digital turnkey radio system from being erected on the water tower at 34 School Street, or on existing commercial antennas removed from the tower.

Neighbouring resident Linda Daniel-Smith said she's disappointed the tower construction began without public consultation. She caught an up-close look of workers installing the structure last week through her bedroom window.

Ms. Daniel-Smith said the tower creates an unsightly view from her backyard and could negatively impact property values.

CONTROVERSIAL plans to erect a 20ft telephone mast on a social club are still up in the air.

The owners of Owton Manor Social Club, in Wynyard Road, Hartlepool, want permission to install the O2 mobile telephone mast on their building.

The club applied for planning permission last year but the application was rejected over public health fears and concerns that the height and design would be detrimental to the area.
