RESIDENTS living near a water tower decked out with dozens of mobile phone masts have demanded that the council throw out plans for two new masts.

A petition signed by 155 people living near the Cargate water pumping tower in Aldershot was submitted to Rushmoor Borough Council on Friday.

The petition called for the council to withdraw the application submitted last month by Orange Personal Communication Services.

FAMILIES who won a campaign to remove a phone mast are outraged after two mobile phone giants re-applied for planning permission.

The mobile phone companies, O2 and Vodafone have re-submitted a joint planning application to Gateshead Council for a 20-metre phone mast to be built at the Glebe Sports Club in Rectory Lane, Whickham.

Several members of the local community launched a campaign when a mast was first installed there in February 2006 and after nearly two years of fighting they won their battle.

A GROUP of campaigners are standing firm against an application to put up an enormous mobile phone mast outside their homes.

Residents in Stoke Park, Ipswich are trying to block plans for the 12.5m pylon to be erected in the middle of the densely populated area.

Cherwell District Council has called for local authorities to have more control over the siting of mobile phone masts.

It is calling on the Government to change its approach to planning, and wants the power to reject applications for what it considers to be poorly-sited masts that might present health risks.
