Iraq's US Security Charade

By Ramzy Baroud

It's also bewildering how some important details are so conveniently overlooked; for example, the fact that the Iraqi government can sign a separate agreement with the US to extend the deadline for withdrawal should the security situation deem such an agreement necessary.

Campaign Promises on Ending the War in Iraq Now Muted

By THOM SHANKER

"I said that I would remove our combat troops from Iraq in 16 months, with the understanding that it might be necessary - likely to be necessary - to maintain a residual force to provide potential training, logistical support, to protect our civilians in Iraq," Mr. Obama said this week as he introduced his national security team.

Obama Partially Rescinds Promise to "End the War"

Thom Shanker, International Herald Tribune: "On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama offered a pledge that electrified and motivated his liberal base, vowing to 'end the war' in Iraq. But as he moves closer to the White House, President-elect Obama is making it clearer than ever that tens of thousands of American troops will be left behind in Iraq, even if he can make good on his campaign promise to pull all combat forces out within 16 months."

Bush’s pity party

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

12/04/08

It’s tiresome to need to point this out at this late date but, yes, George W. Bush and his administration misled the country while making the case for war with Iraq and, remarkably, are still trying to mislead people about it. In a Dec. 1 interview with ABC News’ Charlie Gibson, Bush said that ‘the biggest regret’ of his presidency was ‘the intelligence failure in Iraq.’ In other words, his biggest regret wasn’t regret over anything he did but rather regret over something that was done to him, a vague ‘intelligence failure’ rather than a misguided decision to invade another country...

"I'm Still Tortured by What I Saw in Iraq"

Matthew Alexander, The Washington Post: "I should have felt triumphant when I returned from Iraq in August 2006. Instead, I was worried and exhausted. My team of interrogators had successfully hunted down one of the most notorious mass murderers of our generation, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and the mastermind of the campaign of suicide bombings that had helped plunge Iraq into civil war. But instead of celebrating our success, my mind was consumed with the unfinished business of our mission: fixing the deeply flawed, ineffective and un-American way the US military conducts interrogations in Iraq. I'm still alarmed about that today."

Iraqi Academics Assassinated During the US-Led Occupation

By Michel Chossudovsky

The objective of these targeted assassinations is to "kill a nation", the destroy Iraq's ability to educate its people, to undermine its research and scientific capabilities in literally all fields of endeavor, to transform a nation into a territory, and ultmately to destroy civilization.

Despite Agreement US Future in Iraq Unclear

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "Iraq's Parliament passed the US-Iraq security pact by a slim majority on Wednesday, requiring that US troops withdraw from Iraq by 2011, unless the Iraqi people vote for a quicker withdrawal next year. The agreement is a muddle of triumphs and disappointments."

The US-Iraq Deal Doesn't Bode Well

Although the vote is a victory for Maliki, it says little about the future stability and security of the Iraqi state. And it says even less about the future of US-Iraq relations.

US pact 'could mean torture'

A LANDMARK US military pact approved by Iraq's parliament could lead to Iraqi detainees being tortured or executed at the hands of their own government, a London-based human rights group said.
