STOP ANIMAL TESTING

A message from Ruth:

DEADLINE APR 21, 2006,

SIGN UNTIL CLOSE

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: Tell Animal Planet to Create a series on animal rights issues Target: Animal Planet Television, Animal Planet Television Sponsor: Bonnie Monaghan Dear Animal Planet, Congratulations on the sucess of Animal Precient, Animal Cops, Animal Heros, etc. These shows bring to light the harsh reality of the sufferring of animals in our society. We are asking you to please create a series dealing with other serious animal rights issues. For example, one show could focus on the way in which animals on Factory Farms are killed for food consumption. It could showcase vegitarianism or veganism. Another show could show the cruel slaughter of animals for clothing such as leather, fur, wool, etc, and ask people not to wear these products. Other topics could include animal abuse in circuses as well as animal testing laboratories and Vivesection. The public has a right to know and take action to help the animals that are sufferring. Please consult with leading animal rights activists and advise viewers on how they can help end the sufferring to animals tortured or killed for food, clothing, entertainment, testing, and the like. The world is ready to know the truth. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/538453676#body

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: BAN VIVISECTION IN THE U.S. Target: animal testing laboratories. Sponsor: Maggie Rizzo, none If you sign this petition, you are demanding that the United States government ban animal testing. There are so many alternatives to vivisection! Testing on animals is just plain wrong, and I need your help to make that fact known.
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/778227351#top

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: Victims of Vivisection - End the carnage ! Target: Mike Johanns, Agriculture Secretary, USDA/APHIS/AC Sponsor: Anita Solomon ANIMALS IN LABORATORIES UNSEEN THEY SUFFER UNHEARD THEY CRY IN AGONY THEY LINGER IN LONELINESS THEY DIE Unknown

As many as 115 million animals are experimented on and killed in laboratories in the U.S. every year. Much of the experimentation-including pumping chemicals into rats' stomachs, hacking muscle tissue from dogs' thighs, and putting baby monkeys in isolation chambers far from their mothers-is paid for by you, the American taxpayer and consumer. What have we learned from all of this suffering? That animal research is inherently unethical, inevitably wasteful, and wholly unreliable. The U.S. squanders approximately $18 billion per year on animal experiments, even though alternatives are less expensive and can be used repeatedly. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/311292993

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: Stand Up Against Vivisection Target: Companies and Universities which test on animals Sponsor: Lesleigh Harnwell This is an appeal on behalf of the animals,

Animal experimentation (vivisection) is still a cruel and shocking industry, despite proof that an animal is not the same as a man.

In some cases, pharmaceutical drugs tested on animals and proven safe have had disastrous outcomes for the Human consumers.

The horrific conditions, which these animals are kept. Their daily lives in agony until the end. Surely, this is an abomination of science.

Why then is animal vivisection still around? There are alternatives for man to access disease or the effects of drugs, which do not involve animal testing.

Animals such as cats, dogs, rabbits, mice and many Species of monkey need your help.

April 23rd – 30th is World Week for Animals in Laboratories, Promoting humane research without harming animals. http://www.wwail.org

Be a voice for the animals, which suffer daily. Please sign this petition to abolish animal experimentation.
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/390891939

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: Tell Clorox To Stop Testing On Animals Target: Clorox Sponsor: Meghan Wallace Clorox, along with other companies, test on animals. But the worst truth is that the need for animal testing is eliminated. Science has found other alternatives to animal testing. Please see the full petition for more information

Animal testing is a very cruel, inhumane process to find out the toxic levels of household or other products. Animal testing labs have animals like mice, rabbits, hampsters, and other animals put in cages and stocks while people put make-up on them or force them to ingest things. But not only small animals are tested on. Lost dogs and cats are also tested on. Some people known as bunchers steal pets or lost animals and give them to kennels who abuse them before they give them to animal testing labs like Clorox. Some animal die in the kennels. Others die in the labs. Also animal testing isn't accurate. Animal don't have the same toxin levels as we do. So please say no to Clorox for animal testing.
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/146424495#body

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition: Ask the Canadian Government to stop testing pesticides on animals Target: Ujjal Dosanjh, Minister of Health Canada, Government of Canada Sponsor: Nancy Trezza, none What Canada needs is to ban chemicals that are already known to be dangerous. Instead Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) keeps demanding more animal testing, even though more than 10,000 animals have already been killed for every pesticide on the market. PMRA is demanding a new test called a "developmental neurotoxicity" test, which supposedly gauges a pesticide's effects on the developing nervous systems of animals who are exposed to a chemical while in the womb. This test consumes upwards of 2,000 animals at a time. What's more, government scientists have admitted that they are not even sure how to interpret the results of this test! Canadians, and the world, believe that stopping these tests makes good sense and good science. These animal tests are outdated. We urge PMRA/Health Canada to regulate pesticides and other chemicals that are already known to be dangerous-not to torture innocent animals. Mr. Dosanjh, your Department should be doing much more to reduce its reliance on animal testing, including funding the development of NON-ANIMAL test methods. We do not want our taxpayers' dollars to be used to inflict suffering on animals. Stop testing chemicals and pesticides on animals now!

Protect Endangered Condors from Lead Poisoning

The California condor is one of the world's most endangered species, with just over 125 condors currently in the wild. Lead poisoning from ingesting lead ammunition in carcasses is a severe threat to California condors and also kills bald and golden eagles. Lead poisoning has caused nine confirmed condor deaths since 1997 and is implicated in the death or disappearance of at least 15 other condors in southern California alone. Scores more condors have required life-saving emergency blood treatment involving intrusive chemical therapy after ingesting lead.

Lead bullets are prevalent throughout condor territory, and there is overwhelming evidence that lead exposure comes from ammunition fragments in carcasses the condors feed upon. Condors and other scavenging birds such as eagles are extremely vulnerable to lead and will continue to die of lead poisoning until and unless state and federal agencies take action. Condor experts, toxicologists, and fish and game managers agree that without controlling the presence of lead bullets in condor habitat, the condor faces an extremely difficult road to recovery.

In December 2004, a coalition of conservation groups, Native Americans and hunters petitioned the California Fish and Game Commission to change hunting regulations to protect condors from lead poisoning, but the Commission refused to act. Non-toxic lead-free bullets are already available that perform as well as or better than lead bullets for hunting big game. At least a dozen non-lead shot types are approved by the Fish and Wildlife Service for waterfowl hunting and could be used for hunting upland birds and other game.

Please send a letter to California and federal regulators, urging them to immediately end the use of lead ammunition in condor habitat in California and to phase out toxic lead ammunition statewide, which will protect bald and golden eagles as well. Use the sample text below or write your own letter.

Send a letter to the following decision maker(s): Administrator Stephen L. Johnson, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Director Dale Hall, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Ryan Broddrick, CA Dept. of Fish and Game Exec. Director John Carlson, Jr., CA Fish and Game Comm. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger Regional Administrator Wayne Nastri, USEPA Region 9 Rick Farris, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Below is the sample letter:

Subject: Stop Exposing Endangered Condors to Toxic Lead

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

I urge you to take immediate action to protect California condors and eagles from lead poisoning by mandating the use of non-lead ammunition in condor habitat and eventually phasing out all use of toxic lead ammunition throughout California. At least nine condors have died in California and Arizona from lead poisoning since 1997, and scores of other condors have required intrusive chemical treatment for severe lead poisoning. There is compelling evidence that the primary lead exposure for condors and eagles is from ingesting lead bullet or shot fragments in hunter-shot carcasses. The California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service California Condor Recovery Team concluded that lead poisoning is a severe threat that remains an obstacle to the recovery of the California condor.

California recently put the condor on the state quarter as a symbol of its natural heritage, yet continues to allow hunters to use lead ammunition and leave lead-tainted carcasses in the condor's range. It is unacceptable to continue to expose our most imperiled wildlife to toxic lead. Alternatives to lead ammunition, which perform as well as or better than lead bullets for hunting activities, are already widely available. More than three-quarters of California hunters who responded to a recent Fish and Wildlife Service survey stated their willingness to use lead-free ammunition.

Please act now to protect the California condor by immediately ending the use of lead bullets for hunting in condor habitat in California and eventually phasing out lead ammunition statewide.

Sincerely,

Take Action on this Issue

So why, exactly, is Tokyo so keen on whale hunting?

By David McNeill
In Tokyo
Published: 17 April 2006

Ask a Japanese person under 40 how much whale they consume and you're likely to get a blank look. Most would no more go out of their way to eat whale than a Londoner would to eat jellied eel.

Consumption was falling even before the 1986 moratorium on commercial hunting. Today, the Japanese eat 40 times more beef-burger than whale, says Greenpeace; only 1 per cent of Japanese eat whale meat regularly.

For most Japanese, the debate provokes more yawns than table-thumping, although some middle-aged Japanese wax nostalgic about eating whale after the war, when other protein was scarce.

Why, then, has Tokyo spent two decades pushing for an end to the ban in the face of resistance from conservationists and at huge cost to its international standing? The answer has more to do with politics than culture or economics. Many Japanese are bewildered by what they consider Western sentimentality, and hypocrisy, about whale-eating.

Kiyoshi Okawa, the boss of a company that makes pet snacks from whale meat, recently said: "I can't understand how people can consider whales cute. Lambs are much cuter than whales." Argue that lambs are not going extinct and you will be told that neither are all species of whale. Japan claims it can hunt Antarctic minke, which number close to a million, at a "scientifically sustainable" level.

"It is possible to use these resources in a sustainable way," says Hideki Moronuki of Japan's Fisheries Agency. "We don't have much land, we have the sea. Japan has lost so much of its own culture already. The consumption of rice has decreased because we were forced to consume bread in school since the Second World War in order to import huge amounts of flour from the US."

But conservationists dispute those figures and say the same arguments about sustainability were heard when other species were being hunted to extinction.

Mr Moronuki's tone of wounded national pride hints at the real engine behind the whale campaign. After decades in the diplomatic and military shadow of the US, Japan's nationalists feel this is one area where they can make some noise. Besides, if they back down on whales, restrictions on other marine resources may follow, including that beloved staple, tuna.

Japan's whaling "research fleet" is supported by nationalist politicians, mainly within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. This lobby champions the tradition of whale hunting in a handful of fishing communities, and has spent billions of yen in an effort to reverse the 1986 ban.

But with whale cuisine confined to a handful of specialist outlets, the pro-whalers have struggled to dispose of Japan's growing stocks - almost 5,000 tons, says one recent report. Schoolchildren in rural Wakayama prefecture found deep-fried whale in their lunchboxes last year, and similar schemes are afoot.

Without the nationalists' support, there is little prospect that whale hunting would be economically viable: the sale of whale meat barely covers the cost of sending Japan's eight whaling ships out of harbour.
