McChrystal: More Forces or 'Mission Failure'

By Bob Woodward

The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warns in an urgent, confidential assessment of the war that he needs more forces within the next year and bluntly states that without them, the eight-year conflict "will likely result in failure," according to a copy of the 66-page document obtained by The Washington Post.

America Has Been Here Before

By Eric Margolis

American and NATO generals running the Afghan war amazingly warn they risk being beaten by Taliban tribesmen in spite of their 107,000 soldiers, B-1 heavy bombers, F-15s, F-16s, F-18s, Apache and AC-130 gunships, heavy artillery, tanks, radars, killer drones, cluster bombs, white phosphorus, rockets, and space surveillance.

Afghan Election Scam a Terrifying Tragedy

By Matt McCarten

I've been watching an immoral and farcical tragedy unfold in Afghanistan in the past fortnight, with a sense of despair. The world is pretending that, despite a few hiccups, the Afghan people have had the pleasure of electing a democratic government to govern them. - What delusional nonsense. We are part of a criminal con job and the sooner we admit it, the better.

So where’s the prospectus?

LewRockwell.Com
by Michael S. Rozeff

09/21/09

Why is it companies are forced to supply a prospectus, but the government isn’t? If I am to pay for this war, then I insist on acting like an investor in ‘Afghanistan.’ If the government wants my support, then let them issue a prospectus and let me decide on the merits or demerits of this project. Let me assess the risks, and let me see in writing what the returns are supposed to be. Let me see what this business of state-building is supposed to be about. I’d like to understand why we are in Afghanistan. What is it supposed to accomplish? How much will it cost? What is the strategy of the management? That’s just for starters. I’d like to be able to control how much of my money goes into this investment. I’d even like to be able to sue the promoters for fraud if they make material misstatements or misrepresentations of facts...

Afghanistan: Where Empires Go to Die

White House Issues Yardsticks for Success in Afghanistan

Nancy A. Youssef, McClatchy Newspapers: "The White House Wednesday presented Congress with eight general yardsticks to measure success in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but didn't say how they'd help the administration determine how well U.S. policy in the region is working."

Afghanistan: Where Empires Go to Die

Dahr Jamail, Truthout: "On September 7 the Swedish aid agency Swedish Committee for Afghanistan reported that the previous week US soldiers raided one of its hospitals. According to the director of the aid agency, Anders Fange, troops stormed through both the men's and women's wards, where they frantically searched for wounded Taliban fighters. Soldiers demanded that hospital administrators inform the military of any incoming patients who might be insurgents, after which the military would then decide if said patients would be admitted or not. Fange called the incident 'not only a clear violation of globally recognized humanitarian principles about the sanctity of health facilities and staff in areas of conflict, but also a clear breach of the civil-military agreement' between nongovernmental organizations and international forces. Fange said that US troops broke down doors and tied up visitors and hospital staff."
