Obama has stated that he has a low threshold for ’success’ in Afghanistan

Looking beyond terrorism

Campaign For Liberty
by Philip Giraldi

10/05/09

President Barack Obama has stated that he has a low threshold for ’success’ in Afghanistan. He wants an Afghanistan that can no longer serve as a base for any terrorist group that would be able to attack the United States. Assuming that the President of the United States is true to his word, he should perhaps consider the possibility that the minimum objective for an American withdrawal from Afghanistan has already been achieved. If that is so, it is time for the United States to end its de facto occupation of the country and leave the Afghan people to settle on a form of government that will satisfy their needs, not those of a segment of the international community led by Washington...

The generals’ war

The American Conservative
by Patrick J. Buchanan

10/05/09

Concentrating the minds of all on Sunday was news that 10 U.S. soldiers were killed, two by an Afghan solider, eight when their remote outpost near Pakistan was attacked by hundreds of Taliban. As Obama approaches the pivotal decision of his presidency, here is where the major players seem to be lining up. McChrystal believes so strongly in the need for 40,000 troops he could resign his command if denied them. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Adm. Michael Mullen seems to be in the McChrystal camp. Gen. David Petraeus, regional commander for Afghanistan and Iraq, has yet to commit himself. But as architect of the surge in Iraq, he would seem to support McChrystal. What Petraeus will do, if the McChrystal request is denied, is the big question in Washington. For Petraeus reportedly sees himself as a presidential candidate...

Clinton, Gates: US in Afghanistan for long haul

CNN

10/05/09

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, in a rare joint interview, said Monday that the United States is committed to a regional strategy to build long-standing relations with Afghanistan and Pakistan. Speaking at George Washington University for a program to be broadcast Tuesday on CNN, the two members of President Obama’s Cabinet insisted that the president’s deliberate approach to set the right objectives and policies for Afghanistan was necessary and proper...

Abzug statt Aufstockung

4. Oktober 2009

Afghanistan: NATO strike said to kill family

Washington Post

10/01/09

A NATO airstrike on a compound in southern Afghanistan killed a family of six, a local tribal leader said Thursday, despite orders by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the top U.S. and NATO commander in the country, to avoid air power if civilians are at risk. The U.S. military said the airstrike occurred after troops came under fire from the compound late Wednesday. … A British military spokesman, Lt. Col. Nick Richardson, said there were unconfirmed reports that 12 people were killed — six children, two women and four insurgents...

McChrystal: “Humility” needed in Afghanistan

CNN

10/01/09

The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan said Thursday the coalition in the war-torn country is going to have to do things ‘dramatically differently, even uncomfortably differently’ in order to succeed. ‘We must operate and think in a fundamentally new way,’ Gen. Stanley McChrystal said in a speech at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, a British think thank. He stressed the importance of connecting with the Afghan people, who he said are ‘frustrated’ that more has not been accomplished in the nearly 8-year-old war...

U.S. Bombs Kill 6 or more Afghan civilians
