The Brazilian government continues with plans to build the massive Belo Monte Dam on the Xingu River in the Amazon rainforest, despite massive domestic and international opposition. The 11.2 billion dollar dam will flood an estimated 500 square kilometers of the Amazon rainforest and threaten the survival of tens of thousands of indigenous and traditional peoples who depend on the Xingu River for their livelihoods. The Kayapó leader Raoni Metuktire, who gained international exposure touring the world with Sting, said indigenous men from the Xingu were preparing their bows and arrows in order to fight off the dam. "I think that today the war is about to start once more and the Indians will be forced to kill the white men again so they leave our lands alone.”

Afghanistan: Hilfe für Menschen statt Krieg könnte Tausenden Frauen das Leben retten

Der neueste Bericht der Kinderhilfsorganisation Save the Children straft die Rhetorik der Bundesregierung von der Befreiung der Frauen in Afghanistan Lügen, meint Christine Buchholz, Mitglied im Geschäftsführenden Parteivorstand der Partei DIE LINKE:

In Afghanistan stirbt im Schnitt alle 30 Minuten eine Frau in Schwangerschaft oder bei der Geburt ihres Kindes. 1,1 Milliarde Euro veranschlagt die Bundesregierung dieses Jahr für den Afghanistaneinsatz, darunter 420 Millionen für den zivilen Aufbau. Aber dieses Geld geht nicht in die Ausbildung und Finanzierung von Hebammen, die, so die Studie der Hilfsorganisation, Tausenden Müttern und ihren neugeborenen Kinder das Leben retten könnten. Statt dessen geht das Geld in den Aufbau eines Repressionsapparates, der die unbeliebte und korrupte Regierung von Präsident Karsai absichern soll. Alleine der Bau eines Polizeihauptquartiers in Feyzabad kostete 2,8 Millionen Euro. Das zeigt die Prioritäten der Bundesregierung. Die Menschen, insbesondere Frauen, in Afghanistan spielen nur eine Rolle, wenn es um die innenpolitische Begründung des Krieges geht. Eine, wie von den Entwicklungspolitischen- und Hilfsorganisationen geforderte, vom Militär und der Kriegsführung unabhängige Hilfe für die Menschen gibt es nicht. Voraussetzung für echte Hilfe ist das Ende des Krieges und der Abzug der Bundeswehr. Je schneller, desto besser.
