Der stellvertretende Vorsitzende der LINKEN, Klaus Ernst, wirft Guido Westerwelle eine "einseitige Ausrichtung der Außenpolitik auf Wirtschaftsinteressen" vor. Es sei bezeichnend, dass Westerwelle während seiner Südamerika-Reise nicht zu Demokratie- und Menschenrechtsfragen Stellung bezogen habe. Es gebe auffällige Parallelen zwischen dem "beredten Schweigen Westerwelles zum Putsch in Honduras" und dem Engagement der FDP-nahen Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die politischen Kräfte, die den Umsturz in Honduras unterstützt hätten. Ernst erklärt:

Das Programm von Westerwelles Südamerikareise liest sich, als wäre es im Haus der Deutschen Wirtschaft geschrieben worden. Demokratie und Menschenrechte haben keine prominente Rolle gespielt. Das ist eine verpasste Chance, weil Westerwelle ausschließlich Länder besucht hat, in denen früher blutige Militärdiktaturen regiert haben. Ein deutscher Außenminister hätte auch den Opfern dieser Diktaturen öffentlich Respekt zollen müssen, anstatt sich nur mit der einheimischen Wirtschaft zu treffen. Westerwelle richtet die Außenpolitik einseitig auf Wirtschaftsinteressen aus. Damit verspielt er das Erbe Genschers. Es ist besonders auffällig, dass Westerwelle nicht die Chance genutzt hat, den Staatsstreich in Honduras zu verurteilen und die Einhaltung der Menschenrechte anzumahnen. Während Westerwelles Reise wurde in Honduras der Journalist David Meza ermordet, ohne dass er dazu ein Wort gefunden hätte. Es gibt unübersehbare Parallelen zwischen dem beredten Schweigen Westerwelles und dem Engagement der FDP-nahen Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung in Südamerika. In Honduras hat die Stiftung nicht nur den Putsch öffentlich verteidigt sondern auch jahrelang die späteren Putschisten innerhalb der Liberalen Partei unterstützt. Offenbar kann Westerwelle noch nicht einmal auf Auslandsreisen zwischen seinen Aufgaben als Außenminister und seiner Rolle als FDP-Chef ordentlich trennen.

Er fordert von Merkel eine "schnelle Lösung des Falls Westerwelle". Jeder Tag, den Westerwelle im Amt bleibe, kratze auch am Ansehen Merkels. Ernst erklärt:

Das war keine Rückendeckung sondern ein erster Absetzversuch der Kanzlerin von ihrem Vize. Ihre Äußerungen heißen nichts anderes, als dass sie mit der Praxis in Westerwelles Ministerium nichts zu tun haben will. Westerwelle ist nicht mehr haltbar. Ihm fehlt die persönliche Eignung als Minister. Er kann seine Rollen als Parteichef, Außenminister, und Privatmann nicht auseinander halten. Er hat als Außenminister seine Familie, Freunde und Spender begünstigt. Das kann man nicht leugnen. Einen korrupten Politiker muss man auch korrupt nennen dürfen. Aber als Außenminister auf Auslandsbesuch muss Westerwelle Chefdiplomat sein und darf nicht bei Pressekonferenzen innenpolitische Konflikte mit eigenen Äußerungen anheizen. Jetzt berichten brasilianische Schlagzeilen über den käuflichen deutschen Außenminister, weil Westerwelle mit seiner Rechtfertigung nicht warten konnte. Das ist ein Mangel an Souveränität, der auf das ganze Land abfärbt. Er hat das Ansehen der deutschen Politik und das Ansehen Deutschlands im Ausland beschädigt. Merkel muss sich langsam überlegen, wie lange sie noch mit der Entlassung warten will. Der Fall Westerwelle muss schnell gelöst werden. Jeder Tag mit Westerwelle im Amt kratzt auch an ihrem Ansehen.

A plain reading of yesterday’s vote on the Kucinich war powers resolution is that an overwhelming majority of the House has authorized the Afghanistan war, including a majority of Democrats. The war now has greater legitimacy. The vote was 356-65-9. (If Rep. John Conyers had been present, the dissenting bloc would have been 66, including just five Republicans. Few members took the option of abstaining.) Strong Kucinich supporters will feel vindicated that their hero took a lonely stand and forced the House to a moment of choice. Critics will note that a dubious war has been legitimized, and that it will be more complicated for those who voted ‘aye’ to reverse course in the months ahead. The outcome will make the anti-war forces appear weaker for now than they are, and appearances do matter...
