In Obama’s address to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Phoenix, Ariz., on Aug. 17, he made his commitment to war in the Bananastans irrevocable. It would be wonderful if public servants seeking to associate themselves with the military would cater to the agenda of the Veterans for Peace. For a president of the United States to pander to the VFW is a disgrace. While the VFW is not a pack of latter-day Brownshirts like the American Legion, the two groups possess a common value: they never saw an armed conflict they didn’t like. If they had to serve in a pointless war, everyone else should too...

RESIDENTS campaigning to stop a phone mast from being built near their homes are refusing to give up their peaceful protest.

A determined group have been keeping a round-the-clock vigil at the site of a proposed Vodafone mast in Stoke since last Monday.

They are refusing to budge until the development on the corner of Masterman Road and Keppel Place is scrapped.

The residents spent the weekend maintaining a watchful eye on the spot, some waking up in the early hours in case contractors arrived in the dark.

CDU-Verteidigungsminister Jung sieht den Bundeswehreinsatz in Afghanistan als Erfolg, SPD-Kanzlerkandidat und Bundesaußenminister Steinmeier will nur im Falle eines Wahlsiegs seiner Partei über den Abzug vom Hindukusch verhandeln. Dazu erklärt Helmut Scholz, Mitglied des Parteivorstands und Europaabgeordneter der LINKEN:

Offensichtlich ist die Bundesregierung nach wie vor nicht bereit, die Realitäten in Afghanistan zur Kenntnis zu nehmen. Während Verteidigungsminister Jung in Talkshows von großen Erfolgen beim Wiederaufbau spricht und den Beitrag der Bundeswehr bei der "Befriedung" des Landes lobt, sehen nahezu zeitgleich die US-Kommandeure der Besatzungstruppen Afghanistan in eine Katastrophe abgleiten: Überfälle und Gefechte breiteten sich in immer mehr Gebiete aus, die Taliban nähmen dramatisch an Stärke zu. Dass zur "Problemlösung" noch mehr Soldaten und intensivierte Militäroperationen gefordert werden, spricht nach acht Jahren Krieg mit tausenden Opfern auch unter der Zivilbevölkerung, der Zerstörung der Infrastruktur, einer in vielen Landesteilen katastrophalen sozialen Situation und einem immer mehr von Gewalt und Unsicherheit geprägten gesellschaftlichen Klima jeder Vernunft Hohn. Die Übergriffe während der Präsidentschaftswahlen und die anhaltende Diskussion um Fälschungen bei dieser begrenzten Möglichkeit für die Bevölkerung, über das Schicksal Afghanistans mitzubestimmen, belegen, wie weit das Land von der Normalität entfernt ist. Dennoch hält die Bundesregierung am weiteren und für die Lösung der Probleme des Landes völlig untauglichen Feldzug in Afghanistan fest. Nicht anders sind die Äußerungen Jungs zu verstehen, der Bundeswehreinsatz am Hindukusch könne noch zehn Jahre dauern. Dringend notwendig ist dagegen, dass die Bundesregierung ein Konzept für den Ausstieg aus dem Krieg in Afghanistan und den sofortigen Rückzug der Bundeswehreinheiten, für eine nichtmilitärische Stabilisierung und Demokratisierung des Landes vorlegt. Eine Strategie, die eine demokratisch gewählte und der Rechtsstaatlichkeit verpflichtete afghanische Regierung stärkt, die zur Beseitigung von Unterentwicklung und Armut beiträgt und die Region als Ganzes betrachtet, ist überfällig, weil ohne erkennbaren Ausstieg aus dem Krieg alle anderen Pläne für das Land nicht verwirklicht werden können.
