Bait and Switch: How the "Public Option" Was Sold

Kip Sullivan, Physicians for a National Health Program: "The people who brought us the 'public option' began their campaign promising one thing but now promote something entirely different. To make matters worse, they have not told the public they have backpedalled. The campaign for the 'public option' resembles the classic bait-and-switch scam: tell your customers you've got one thing for sale when in fact you're selling something very different."

US Continues to Train Honduran Soldiers at School of Americas

Amy Goodman, Democracy Now!: "While the European Union cut off aid to the coup regime in Honduras, the United States continues the money flow, and while the US says it has cut military ties, the National Catholic Reporter reveals Honduran army officers are still receiving military training at the notorious School of the Americas in Fort Benning, Georgia."

The Honduran coup and the Clinton connection

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

[W]hile the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama has officially taken the position that the coup is illegitimate and President Manuel ‘Mel’ Zelaya must be restored to office, there are hints that the U.S. is playing both sides of the fence — and even tilting toward the coup leaders. When Zelaya announced that he would cross the border between Honduras and Nicaragua on foot and called on his supporters to gather, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denounced him as ‘reckless.’ Which led Zelaya to ask, in effect, which side is she on? Good question, and the answer is she’s on Lanny Davis’ side. Davis, you’ll recall, was her chief attack dog during the presidential primary campaign, and now he’s sold his services to the Honduran branch of CEAL, the Central American business alliance, which supports the coup...

Obama’s disappointing secrecy

Cato Institute
by Benjamin H. Friedman

07/22/09

The Obama administration promised an ‘unprecedented level of openness in government.’ The White House website says that citizens have a right to know what their government is doing and that accountability makes government more effective. That’s absolutely right. In some areas, such as the liberalization of policy on Freedom of Information Act requests, the administration has embraced this principle. Disappointingly though, the administration’s commitment to openness and accountability does not extend to intelligence activities...

Have government deficits “saved the world?”

Foundation for Economic Education
by William Anderson

07/22/09

Last week, I wrote about the crudeness of so-called Keynesian economic theory in which one assumes that all assets and capital ‘investment’ are ‘homogeneous’ in character, which means that their only contribution to the economy is from the money that is spent in their creation and continued operation. This view contrasts with the Austrian paradigm, which emphasizes the structure of production within an economy and the unsustainability of capital that is malinvested during a boom. Unfortunately, too many people in high places are prone to believe what on its face is unbelievable: running huge federal deficits somehow is a good thing for the economy...

How to argue against torture

CounterPunch
by Bernard Chazelle

07/22/09

Anti-torture voices have been left sounding defensive, insecure, incoherent. Yet, while boasting the world’s highest incarceration numbers and supermax prisons characterized by a warden as a ‘clean version of hell,’ the US has also begun to question its tolerance of torture. The debate is on, and torture is winning. I intend here to lay the foundation for a strong, cogent anti-torture position. It rests upon three principles: Torture is always wrong; Torture must be banned by law unconditionally; Not all torture decisions should be morally codified...

The Coup and the U.S. Airbase in Honduras

Zelaya, Negroponte and the Controversy at Soto Cano

The mainstream media has once again dropped the ball on a key aspect of the ongoing story in Honduras: the U.S. airbase at Soto Cano, also known as Palmerola. Prior to the recent military coup d'etat President Manuel Zelaya declared that he would turn the base into a civilian airport, a move opposed by the former U.S. ambassador. What's more Zelaya intended to carry out his project with Venezuelan financing.

America's Wars: How Serial War Became the American Way of Life

David Bromwich, TomDispatch.com: "We have begun to talk casually about our wars; and this should be surprising for several reasons. To begin with, in the history of the United States war has never been considered the normal state of things. For two centuries, Americans were taught to think war itself an aberration, and 'wars' in the plural could only have seemed doubly aberrant. Younger generations of Americans, however, are now being taught to expect no end of war -- and no end of wars."

Bundeswehr in der Sackgasse

22. Juli 2009

Making sense of Cheney’s madness

Consortium News
by Ivan Eland

07/21/09

The seeming irrationality behind the George W. Bush administration’s ‘against the grain’ (and the law) policies on torture, warrantless domestic surveillance, and now notification of Congress about CIA covert operations was not irrational at all. Most experts say that torture is counterproductive because the subject will tell the interrogator what he or she wants to hear to stop the pain and because many military people say that it merely revs up the opposition, gives them no incentive to surrender, and gives them every incentive to torture U.S. military personnel. Yet in the face of this mountain of authoritative opinion and the policy’s clear violation of international law and a U.S. criminal statute against torture, the Bush administration gleefully did it anyway...

Dismantling the temple

The Nation
by William Greider

07/15/09

The financial crisis has propelled the Federal Reserve into an excruciating political dilemma. The Fed is at the zenith of its influence, using its extraordinary powers to rescue the economy. Yet the extreme irregularity of its behavior is producing a legitimacy crisis for the central bank. The remote technocrats at the Fed who decide money and credit policy for the nation are deliberately opaque and little understood by most Americans. For the first time in generations, they are now threatened with popular rebellion. During the past year, the Fed has flooded the streets with money — distributing trillions of dollars to banks, financial markets and commercial interests — in an attempt to revive the credit system and get the economy growing again. As a result, the awesome authority of this cloistered institution is visible to many ordinary Americans for the first time. People and politicians are shocked and confused, and also angered, by what they see. They are beginning to ask some hard questions for which Federal Reserve governors do not have satisfactory answers...

US Withheld Data on Risks of Distracted Driving

More cell phone dangers hidden from the public

Here is another example of important research involving the use of cell phones, death and injuries, being hidden from the public.

Martin Weatherall

“No public health and safety agency should allow its research to be suppressed for political reasons,” he said. Doing so “will cause deaths and injuries on the highways.”

Obama, More Polished Than the Last Puppet

By Cindy Sheehan

Okay, so the United States of America has had a new puppet regime for six months now. I was never so much into giving Obama a "chance" and I think it's way past time to call Obama and his supporters out, like we called Bush and his supporters out. Our Presidents are merely puppets for the Robber Class and Obama is no exception.

Obama’s free lunch is over

AntiWar.Com
by Philip Giraldi

07/23/09

I am one of those conservatives who has been inclined to cut President Barack Obama some slack on foreign policy and national security issues. I believe that he inherited a ‘worst possible’ international situation with the United States universally hated, two wars being lost and a third one waiting in the wings, an ‘ally’ in Israel with an elected government that was both racist and heedless of the national interest of its great benefactor, and anti-American populism on the march everywhere in Latin America. To be sure, Obama has moved quickly to change the ‘tone’ of the conversation, restoring civility with many of America’s neighbors and friends. He has demonstrated that he is serious about a Palestinian state and has established the principle that it is better to negotiate with adversaries than to start preventive wars. All of that granted however, President Obama has failed to carry out the change that he promised when he was running for office...

Obama is delaying the economic recovery

The American Spectator
by Peter Ferrara

07/22/09

Don’t believe the Obama Administration rhetoric about how this economy has just turned out to be so difficult and they are doing the best they can. While the economy is still getting worse, the truth is the recovery is long overdue. The National Bureau of Economic Research dates this recession as starting some time during December, 2007. The longest recession since World War II was 16 months, with the average being 10 months. The current recession has now lasted 19 months. By this reckoning, we should have had a normal cyclical recovery at least 3 months ago...
