Rove Deposed in US Attorney Probe

John Bresnahan and Josh Gerstein, The Politico: "Former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove was deposed Tuesday by attorneys for the House Judiciary Committee, according to Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the panel's chairman. Rove's deposition began at 10 a.m. and ended around 6:30 p.m, with several breaks, Conyers said. Conyers would not comment on what Rove told congressional investigators, what the next step in the long-running Judiciary Committee investigation would be or whether Rove would face additional questioning."

The Man Who Crashed the World

Michael Lewis, Vanity Fair: "Almost a year after A.I.G.'s collapse, despite a tidal wave of outrage, there still has been no clear explanation of what toppled the insurance giant. The author decides to ask the people involved - the silent, shell-shocked traders of the A.I.G. Financial Products unit - and finds that the story may have a villain, whose reign of terror over 400 employees brought the company, the US economy, and the global financial system to their knees."

School to fight fresh phone mast plan

By Andrew Clarke

Last updated 15:43, Wednesday, 08 July 2009

HENSINGHAM Primary School has vowed to fight “tooth and nail” a decision to erect a mobile phone mast near its grounds.

Headteacher Robin Lacey says the school community will “kick up as much stink as we can” in a bid to overturn a controversial decision that will see a 12½-metre O2 mast sited only 80 metres from the school.

“We will write to O2 to express our concerns and dismay at these plans and to ask them to reconsider,” said Mr Lacey. “Parents are also organising a petition and our chair of governors, Fiona McMinn, is drafting a letter to Copeland Borough Council and The Whitehaven News. We are determined not to let this happen.”

Is Texas harboring the torture decider?

Freedom's Phoenix
by Ray McGovern

07/07/09

Seldom does a crime scene have so clear a smoking gun. A two-page presidential memorandum of Feb. 7, 2002, leaves no room for uncertainty regarding the ‘decider’ on torture. His broad-stroke signature made torture official policy. This should come as no surprise. You see, the Feb. 7, 2002, memorandum has been posted on the Web since June 22, 2004, when then-White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales mistakenly released it, along with other White House memoranda. The title seemed innocent enough — ‘Humane Treatment of al Qaeda and Taliban Detainees’ — but in the body of the memo President George W. Bush authorized his senior aides to withhold Geneva Convention protections from suspected al-Qaeda and Taliban detainees. Like Shakespeare, the media seem harshest on the lawyers, including Texans Gonzales and William J. Haynes II (Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s lawyer), who later outdid themselves trying to make torture legal. What gets lost in the woodwork is this: Banal as their ex-post-facto ‘justification’ for torture was, the lawyers were not the deciders...

Detainees, Even if Acquitted, Might Not Go Free

Wall Street Journal

07/07/09

The Obama administration said Tuesday it may continue to imprison non-U.S. citizens indefinitely even if they have been acquitted of terrorism charges by a U.S. military commission. Jeh Johnson, the Defense Department’s chief lawyer, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that releasing a detainee who has been tried and found not guilty was a policy decision officials would make based on their estimate of whether the prisoner posed a future threat. The Bush administration took the same position, but its legality was never tested. Also at the hearing, Obama administration officials differed with the Navy’s senior uniformed lawyer over whether coerced statements could be used to obtain convictions before military commissions...

The Obama justice system

Salon
by Glenn Greenwald

07/08/09

In June, Robert Gibbs was repeatedly asked by ABC News‘ Jake Tapper whether accused Terrorists who were given a trial and were acquitted would be released as a result of the acquittal, but Gibbs — amazingly — refused to make that commitment. But this is the first time an Obama official has affirmatively stated that they have the ‘post-acquittal detention’ power (and, to my knowledge, the Bush administration never claimed the power to detain someone even if they were acquitted). All of this underscores what has clearly emerged as the core ‘principle’ of Obama justice when it comes to accused Terrorists — namely, ‘due process’ is pure window dressing with only one goal: to ensure that anyone the President wants to keep imprisoned will remain in prison. They’ll create various procedures to prettify the process, but the outcome is always the same — ongoing detention for as long as the President dictates...

MP claims UK “outsourced torture”

BBC News [UK]

07/08/09

An MP has used parliamentary privilege to accuse the British intelligence service of ‘outsourcing torture.’ Former Shadow Home Secretary David Davis cited the case of Rangzieb Ahmed, from Rochdale, who was jailed for life for being an al-Qaeda planner. Mr Davis told the House of Commons that intelligence services had allowed Ahmed to go to Pakistan. Once there, they alerted Pakistani authorities who arrested him and tortured him, parliament was told. Mr Davis is calling for a judicial inquiry into at least 15 cases where torture of terrorist suspects has been alleged...

Washington Post Not Alone on Corporate-Sponsored "Salons"

Zachary Roth, Talking Points Memo: "Last week, Politico reported that the Washington Post had planned to put on an exclusive off-the-record 'salon' at the home of its publisher, where corporate lobbyists would pay as much as $250,000 to gain access to Post reporters and editors, as well as Obama administration officials and members of Congress. The news provoked an outcry in DC journalism circles -- the Post's own ombudsman called it 'pretty close to a public relations disaster' - and the event was quickly canceled. But the notion that the Post's gambit represents some sort of new and uniquely outrageous collapsing of the wall between the editorial and business sides of a news publication is badly off the mark."

Fury as government inspector approves phone mast close to Birmingham school

Jul 8 2009 by Edward Chadwick, Birmingham Mail

GOVERNMENT planning chiefs have sparked anger after they over-ruled city councillors in allowing a phone mast to be built close to a Birmingham school.

The city’s planning committee turned down the proposal by phone giants O2 on the grounds of health risks for youngsters at Cockshut Hill School in Sheldon.

But inspectors reversed the decision last month following an appeal and will allow the 12.5-metre mast to be built yards from the perimeter of the school’s grounds.

Councillors who campaigned against the mast and education leaders said they are disappointed at the ruling.

Iraq: The coming train wreck

The Iraq War has been long forgotten and treated as a ‘mission abolished’ after the new president pledged to withdraw U.S. forces and the American media, public, and Congress turned their attention back to a war even liberals could love (or at least support) — Afghanistan. Liberals wanted to refocus on the real war on terror — even though it’s not chic to call it that under the new Democratic administration. But what about poor Iraq? As baseball great Yogi Berra once said, ‘It ain’t over, till it’s over.’ And the underlying indicators seem to indicate that the worst is yet to come...

Raining on our parades

The Weekly Standard
by Irwin M. Stelzer

07/06/09

This was not the cheeriest of holiday weekends. Yes, we still celebrated our Declaration of Independence from the British oppressor some 233 years ago. And yes, many towns had parades and fireworks to celebrate that event. And yes, ‘Big Pay Packages Return to Wall Street,’ headlined the Wall Street Journal. Goldman Sachs is on course to pay bonuses of $20 billion, or $700,000 per employee, twice last year’s payout, and Morgan Stanley is projected to top last year’s bonus pool of $262,000 per employee with checks close to $340,000. But we fired up our barbeques only after hearing that some 457,000 non-farm payroll jobs had disappeared in June, bringing the total number of jobs lost in this recession to 6.5 million and the number of workers in search of jobs to 14.7 million. More female veterans are winding up homeless

Boston Globe

07/06/09

The number of female service members who have become homeless after leaving the military has jumped dramatically in recent years, according to new government estimates, presenting the Veterans Administration with a challenge as it struggles to accommodate the hundreds of thousands of returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. As more women serve in combat zones, the share of female veterans who end up homeless, while still relatively small at an estimated 6,500, has nearly doubled over the last decade, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. For younger veterans, it is even more pronounced: One out of every 10 homeless vets under the age of 45 is now a woman, the statistics show. And unlike their male counterparts, many have the added burden of being single parents...

The Age Of Despotism

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

This past Independence Day weekend, my friend, LCDR (Retired) Guy Cunningham, delivered an outstanding address here in Pensacola, Florida, in which he said that America is now in "The Age of Perfidy." He went on to say that our country is soon to enter "The Age of Despotism." I candidly confess that I believe the retired Naval officer could be more right than we might want to admit.........
