Alistair Horne describes the methods and consequences wonderfully well in his history A Savage War of Peace. They don’t encourage imitation. In fact, the lesson of the Algerian War, and of the Bush government’s experiment with the same sort of policies, is one that should be obvious and gratifying to any conservative: the traditional absolute ban on judicial torture is wiser than we can know. The proposed construction by U.S. Cellular of an 85-foot cell-phone tower in the small town of Fairfield has aroused health-related concerns from many residents in recent weeks.

In response, the company delayed construction and met with Mayor Ed Malloy, Maharishi University and a town committee, which proposed alternative locations to the proposed site on Depot Street, which is within 1,500 feet of three elementary schools and within 50 feet of residences and offices. U.S. Cellular rejected these alternatives, stating they were "not environmentally suitable to build a tower," and resumed construction.

"Beim Datenschutz hat die große Koalition versagt. Wirtschaftsinteressen sind den Regierungsfraktionen offensichtlich wichtiger als das Selbstbestimmungsrecht der Verbraucher", so das Mitglied des Parteivorstandes Jan Korte (MdB). Nach seiner Auffassung sind durch das neue Bundesdatenschutzgesetz die nächsten Datenschutzskandale vorprogrammiert. Er erklärt:

Der überfällige Paradigmenwechsel beim Datenschutz, den Bundesinnenminister Schäuble beim Datenschutzgipfel 2008 noch vollmundig versprach, wird unter schwarz-rot definitiv nicht kommen. Das proklamierte Ziel, künftig die Betroffenen über die Verwendung ihrer personenbezogenen Daten selbst entscheiden zu lassen und ihnen somit die Souveränität über ihre Daten zurückzugeben, wurde weitestgehend aufgegeben. Der monatelange massive Druck der Lobbyverbände kippte sowohl die Abschaffung des Listenprivilegs beim Datenhandel, als auch ein generelles Koppelungsverbot aus dem Koalitionskompromiss. Auch das von Verbraucherschützern geforderte Verbandsklagerecht bei Datenschutzverstößen wird nicht kommen. Anders als frühere Entwürfe enthält die beabsichtigte Neuregelung auch die Erlaubnis, Daten zu Werbezwecken zu übermitteln wenn der Betroffene den Ursprung der Daten und die erstmalig erhebende Stelle erkennen könne. Eine separate Einwilligung dafür sieht das Gesetz nicht mehr vor. Die Nutzung und der Handel listenförmiger Daten werden durch eine Vielzahl von Ausnahmefällen weiterhin möglich sein. Das ist in der Summe und Konsequenz so katastrophal, dass die im Gesetz enthaltenen positiven Maßnahmen wie die Ausweitung der Bußgeldtatbestände, Informationspflichten bei Datenschutzverstößen und verschärfte Anforderungen an die Auftragsdatenverarbeitung dies bei weitem nicht aufwiegen. Die knappen und eigentlich zu begrüßenden Formulierungen zum Arbeitnehmerdatenschutz in diesem zusammengestoppelten Gesetz werden darüber hinaus ein eigenständiges Arbeitnehmerdatenschutzgesetz, das angesichts ständig neuer Datenschutzskandale in Unternehmen zwingend ist, wieder um Jahre verzögern. DIE LINKE lehnt das neue Bundesdatenschutzgesetz, das alle ursprünglich getroffenen einigermaßen festen Regelungen in einem Meer von Ausnahmen versenkt hat, ab. Es ist ungeeignet und alles andere als verbraucherfreundlich. Katastrophal wird es, weil es den Status Quo auf Jahre festschreibt und eine tatsächliche Reform auf längere Zeit unmöglich machen wird.
