It's Time For A Second American Revolution

By Mikhail Gorbachev

America was the main architect, and America's elite the main beneficiary, of the current world economic model. That model is now cracking and will, sooner or later, be replaced. That will be a complex and painful process for everyone, including the United States.

Where Fear Rules

By Paul Craig Roberts

Americans are at ease with their country's aggression against Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan, which has resulted in a million dead Muslim civilians and several million refugees, because the US government has filled Americans with fear of terrorists. "We have to kill them over there before they come over here."

Administration Fights Disclosure on Two Fronts

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Last month, the CIA told a federal court judge it could not abide by a court order and turn over detailed documents about the destruction of 92 interrogation videotapes because it would compromise the integrity of a special prosecutor's criminal investigation into the matter. US District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein responded by demanding a sworn declaration from special counsel John Durham confirming that to be the case. In a subsequent court filing, Lev Dassin, acting US attorney for the Southern District of New York, backtracked and said the CIA would no longer rely on that argument."

Bank Bailout Turns Out to Have Been Good Business for US

Kevin G. Hall, McClatchy Newspapers: "When Congress passed the $700 billion Wall Street bailout package last fall, critics said it'd be a money loser. But when 10 banks returned $68 billion of the money on Tuesday, President Barack Obama said the government had realized a small profit. Did it really? In addition to returning the $68 billion, the 10 banks paid the government $1.8 billion in dividends on the preferred shares of stock the government owned. That translates to an annualized rate of return of about 4.64 percent on the $68 billion."

Objections raised to extension of Green Belt mobile phone mast in Great Budworth

Jun 10 2009 by David Norbury, Mid Cheshire Chronicle

PARISH councillors, conservationists and neighbours are objecting to a scheme to heighten a T-Mobile phone mast on Green Belt land next to Belmont Hall, Great Budworth.

The operator is seeking approval to add a 5m extension to its 15m tower and to replace the six 2G antennae with three 2G and three 3G.

The Parish Council objects and says it has ‘grave concerns’ about the visual effects above the tree canopy.

The village Amenity Society agrees it would be intrusive, while neighbours at Garden Cottage, 75m from the installation, have raised health and safety issues with the proposal.

They say they are ‘seriously concerned’ about the increased health risks and point out that Cransley School is within 400m.

Verlust von zehntausenden Jobs ist immer systemrelevant

10. Juni 2009

California is broke(n) on most every register and by almost any measure

The State We Are In

David Theo Goldberg, Truthout: "The State of California, it is now plain for all who hadn't noticed previously, is dysfunctional. As much politically as economically. Many now are pointing out that the causes of our current demise, and therefore the fixes too, are technical by nature. The culprits are various: Proposition 13 radically restricts revenue collection by limiting property taxes for long-time California residents; the two-thirds vote required for any budget solution is next to impossible to achieve; narrowed term limits for state politicians produce turnover and inexperienced legislators; rule by Propositional mandate (which brought about the previous three policies) yields so much inflexibility and required spending as to limit the range of possible fixes, and so on. California is broke(n) on most every register and by almost any measure."

The new totalitarianism

Porcupine Blog
by Larry Gambone

06/05/09

As everyone knows, ‘classic’ totalitarian systems are fa[s]cism, nazi-fascism and Stalinism. The idea was to mold humanity in the image presented by the state ideology. This was achieved through terror, but also mass media, the education system, a party hierarchy that one had to join to get ahead, the creation of scape goats and demonic figures and an economic system geared to the needs of the state. But classical totalitarianism suffered from a number of serious flaws. For the ruling classes, the dictators they backed were unwilling to remain as puppets and had ideas of their own. Having the police and the army in their control they were able to attempt those plans. The second was the problem of succession, always a problem in a dictatorship. The third was inefficiency...

The bailout state

The Weekly Standard
by Matthew Continetti

It’s not every day that you get to witness the birth of a new social system. But General Motors’ June 1 bankruptcy, and the company’s likely reorganization under the ownership of the U.S. Treasury, does suggest the arrival of a novel relationship — at least for the United States — between the citizen and his government. We’ve all encountered the national security state, where individuals give up a degree of civil liberty in exchange for protection from internal and external threats. And we live in a welfare state, where the government imposes obligations on certain individuals, in the form of taxes and duties, in order to secure basic social benefits for the entire populace. But the national security and welfare states are oh-so twentieth-century. This is a new day. This is the dawn of the bailout state... (for publication 06/15/09)

Democrats declare war on the poor

The American Spectator
by Robert Stacy McCain

06/08/09

Given the abject failure of the War on Poverty — as Ronald Reagan said, ‘Poverty won’ — now Democrats apparently have decided to go right for the heart of the problem, by making war on the poor. That’s the only plausible explanation for S.500, the ‘Protecting Consumers from Unreasonable Credit Rates Act of 2009,’ introduced earlier this year by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois). The bill would limit interest rates in such a way that pawn shop owners say it would drive them out of business. Currently under consideration by the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs committee, this legislation could only make sense to someone who (a) knows nothing about pawn shops, and (b) knows nothing about economics...

GM, Amtrak and an increasingly fascist America

by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

06/08/09

Last week, General Motors finally declared bankruptcy. Many in government thought $20 billion in taxpayer dollars would save the company, but as predicted, it only postponed the inevitable. The government will dump another $30 billion into GM and take a 60 percent controlling interest for it. Public officials are now involving themselves in tactical business decisions such as where GM’s headquarters should move and what kind of cars it will build. The promise that this is temporary and will eventually be profitable is supposed to ease the American people into accepting this arrangement, but it is of little comfort to those who remember similar promises when the American taxpayers bought Amtrak. After three years, government was supposed to be out of the passenger rail business. 40 years and billions of dollars later, the government is still operating Amtrak at a loss, despite the fact that they have created a monopoly by making it illegal to compete with Amtrak. Imagine what they can now do to what is left of the great American auto industry!

Congress Unlikely to Reform Root Cause of Economic Crisis

Mary Kane, The Washington Independent: "Not long after foreclosures started to take off in 2007 and the mortgage market's collapse began to cripple the economy, one lesson seemed obvious: The predatory lending practices that led to the crisis had to be reined in. But despite massive government bailouts of banks and lenders due to losses from toxic mortgages, that reform still hasn't happened."

Glimmer of hope for mast campaigners

Tuesday, June 09, 2009, 00:00

Obama's Speech In Egypt

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

In calling for a "world order," Obama blatantly said "Given our interdependence, any world order that elevates one nation . . . over another will inevitably fail." Does everyone understand what Obama is saying? In order for this new "world order" to materialize, no individual nation can be preferred over another--not even our own. In a word, no country can be allowed to maintain national sovereignty, independence, or military superiority. All nations must be willing to surrender their sovereignty and independence to the new "world order." Furthermore, all nations must be willing to submit their militaries to a new global military. Oh yes, my friend, all of this is inferred in Obama's statement.
